Almond and Seed Overnight Oats

Mondays are not always easy; but they are made that much better when all you have to do is open the fridge and find these simple yet tasty Almond and Seed Overnight Oats for brekkie! Have a good one!
Ingredients (serves 1):
1/3 cup whole rolled oats
1/2 teaspoon flax seeds
1/2 teaspoon chia seeds
1 1/2 teaspoon demerara sugar
8 almonds +  more for sprinkling
1/2 cup goat’s milk, plain or soya yoghurt
In serving bowl, combine whole rolled oats, flax seeds, chia seeds and demerara sugar.
Roughly chop almonds, and add to the bowl; give a good stir.
Then stir in goat’s milk yoghurt until well-combined. Cover with cling film, and place in the refrigerator overnight.
The next morning, roughly chop a few almonds, if desired, and sprinkle them on top of Almond and Seed Overnight Oats. Enjoy with a cup of tea or coffee!

how do you find out the purpose of a multi-purpose ingredient in a recipe so you can substitute it? I need to replace 1/4 cup flax meal in a cake but I need to know what it does in this specific recipe and I don't have chia or hemp seeds.
is it being used as a binder?
is it replacing butter or oil?
is it a thickener?
is it for fibre?
is it just for flavour?
what property do I need to substitute???? I have read the entire post and every single comment twice and there's no mention of its purpose or appropriate substitutes.
