i saw agave discourse last night and that’s one of those “vegan food” discourses i’ve never understood. like first of all, agave is nowhere near the only non-honey liquid sweetener out there i’m sure plenty of vegans use maple or corn syrup instead because those are cheaper. and second of all, i agree a lot of agave farming is unsustainable and exploitative. but folks have we forgotten about the tequila industry or is that exempt from critique?

Oh God, please tell me that isn’t back again… Five years ago I was responding to nothing but that, just as I seem to be with leather now.

To summarise in brief, while agave can be farmed sustainably, much of it isn’t. The vast majority of agave is used to produce tequila and mezcal. Despite this fact, people spent years blaming vegans for replacing honey with agave nectar, yet we never saw a single post criticising anyone for having a margarita.

I don’t know any vegan who even uses agave nectar to replace honey - it’s a very niche item, and it isn’t a ‘vegan product’ any more than quinoa is, or plastic, or soy. This is yet another lazy, intellectually dishonest excuse to criticise vegans without having to go through the inconvenience of doing any research or finding out what we actually believe.

A Mother's Daughter

I saw this painting and immediately knew I wanted to turn it into something Dionysus themed, and of course I soon landed on The Bacchae. This drawing being Agave with parts of Pentheus- Now, here I could go on about the idea of looking at the Bacchae through a transgender lens, I solidly see Pentheus as Agave's daughter though he doesn't know that until Dionysus gives him a taste of it, but I think I'll write a post about that on it's own some day. For now, I just intend this to show the violence in the play from mother to child, but also from self to self (as Agave intentionally looks a bit like Pentheus, being his mom, and I've dressed her in a fawn pelt just the same.), it's also intentionally showing it in a sort of 'mad' way with the gore being synonymous with the grapes of Dionysus- blending into each other, skin blending into leaves, in a way that doesn't quite make sense.
