Addendum regarding the bees: Honey bees are not in danger of extinction. Native bees are! (The article is about the US, but I'm sure it applies to many other countries too. Even if the honeybee is native somewhere, there are guaranteed to be other bees and insect pollinators which are struggling.)
If you really want to help bees, plant flowers native to your region and/or encourage your town/city to plant them in public areas.
Vegans of tumblr, listen up. Harvesting agave in the quantities required so you dont have to eat honey is killing mexican long-nosed bats. They feed off the nectar and pollinate the plants. They need the agave. You want to help the environment? Go back to honey. Your liver and thyroid will thank you, as well. Agave is 90% fructose, which can cause a host of issues. Bye.

A Mother's Daughter
unlit close up + original painting (Italian Fruit Seller) + small explanation under the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I saw this painting and immediately knew I wanted to turn it into something Dionysus themed, and of course I soon landed on The Bacchae. This drawing being Agave with parts of Pentheus- Now, here I could go on about the idea of looking at the Bacchae through a transgender lens, I solidly see Pentheus as Agave's daughter though he doesn't know that until Dionysus gives him a taste of it, but I think I'll write a post about that on it's own some day. For now, I just intend this to show the violence in the play from mother to child, but also from self to self (as Agave intentionally looks a bit like Pentheus, being his mom, and I've dressed her in a fawn pelt just the same.), it's also intentionally showing it in a sort of 'mad' way with the gore being synonymous with the grapes of Dionysus- blending into each other, skin blending into leaves, in a way that doesn't quite make sense.

pentheus with his own head, or agave with the head of pentheus, or dionysus with the head of pentheus - at this point not even I know what this is. thankfully visual arts can be ambiguous and allow free associations! to muddy the waters even more, I leave you with this banger post by @finelythreadedsky

Agave parrasana × salmiana
This is a hybrid I made back in the 90's, combining the enormous green-leaved Agave salmiana with the more compact blue-gray Agave parrasana. They combined nicely, with a large artichoke-like blue-green rosette of leaves, and I was especially pleased to see that when it came time to flower the buds proved to be red-tinged (this is a trait seen in Agave parrasana, but not in Agave salmiana). The plant pictured has a couple of offsets, so we be able to keep it going when the mother plant dies after flowering.
