Why you should watch foreign films.
They're good. Bong Joon Ho (director of Parasite) says it best.
Movies are a great way to experience other perspectives and cultures. Foreign films are made differently from films you're used to. The style, the editing, the way plots unfold, it's all going to be different in interesting ways. Some examples:
Giallo films (Italian) might have nonsensical plots but they're more focused on emotion and spectacle. You're Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have The Key might be a mess of a story but it's a wild ride of the type you don't find in America.
Japan has a lot of movies about the horrors of nuclear war and proliferation. Godzilla, Akira and Grave of the Fireflies could not have been made in America. When America makes a movie about nukes we get Oppenheimer, a movie about the people who made the bomb and not the people that suffered under it.
Korea has some amazing thrillers like Oldboy and Memoirs of a Murderer. America remade Oldboy and it was not nearly as good.
These are all broad strokes of course, but the point is that other countries have a lot to offer and you're missing out on so much if you're scared off by subtitles. The way I figure is that 95% of the world's population doesn't live in America, so why assume 100% of good movies come from there?

the paintings of pills post reminded me (because of the crushed benadryl) of the time I was breaking out in hives from stress because my very recent ex (and roommate) had brought his new squeeze (also our coworker) (lived there too but in a different house) into the living room for games and stuff (to get drunk and flirt mostly).
anyway, this was before I actually smoked weed and I didn't have an Ativan prescription. I had edibles but they would be too slow to have before bed.
So I couldn't do much chemically about the anxiety so I decided to address the hives at least. the house first aid kid had been raided (to restock the field kits, we worked at a nature centre) and the benadryl left was kind of crushed and damp. but it was what I had, so I eyeballed it and estimating that i was at least below the median lethal dose for my biomass.
telling time was hard because of the everything going on, and also my lips and mouth were becoming numb. The antihistamines also seemed to be knocking in faster than usual so I was feeling weird.
was I allergic to Benadryl? Maybe I had sensitized myself a few months earlier after slathering myself in antihistamine and steroid lotion after contracting gnarly poison ivy, due to having camped on an island covered with poison ivy trees (work trip). the lotion worked but kinda numbed my face and eyelids.
so yeah, benadryl was definitely a topical anaesthetic but why was I so zooted from a couple of tablets?
Oh yeah. The benadryl pills were smooshed. Crushed pills absorb differently from whole ones. So not only had I kinda eyeballed the dose, I was basically getting an antihistamine bong hit.
I woke up in my own bunk, but I think I spent most of the evening lying on the deck and listening to the gray tree frogs. (The fireflies were probably real too, but I don't know).
#i lived 👍#i wouldnt recommend this but i would recommend intravenous gravol/dramamine (dimenhydrinate not diphenhydramine like benadryl )#like if youre in the hospital or whatever lol and they ask u. instant relief and it was v relaxing

Warm-up, Week 3 homework
Task: To come up with a warm-up based on the warm-ups from Week 2's session that is specific to invoking not only ensemble but the world of the play.
Beginning of the warm-up will be for the group to stand in a circle, listening to the ambience of crickets and fireflies that feel authentic to the Pawhuska setting.
I'll ask performers to be aware of their peripheral vision, and really explore the scope of that - to test how far to left and the right they can see without moving their eyes? how close to them they can see without moving their eyes? can they see everybody in the circle? who can't they see, is their mind able to fill in that gap? This is to build awareness of each other, center themselves and build ensemble.
Then I'll ask them when they are ready, to begin walking together. Doesn't have to be now, there's no rush, but as a group they should begin. This is to get them into the next task and to build ensemble.
Once they start walking, I'll ask them to think about how the sound may impact the way that they walk. The mood that they're in. The tempo. Their posture. This is to get them thinking about the environment of the play.
Then I'll ask them to think about the heat. How does the heat impact how they walk? How does the heat impact how they interact with each other in the room? Does it slow them down, speed them up? What parts of their body sweats? What parts need cooling down, if at all? How do you achieve this? Encourage them to interact with each other, if needs be. This is to get them thinking about the environment of the play and how it may impact their performance, as well as their interactions with each other.
Once I feel satisfied that they've really got within that feeling, I'll ask them to stop where they are and make eye contact with somebody in the room. This acts as a "reset" but also as a way to build ensemble.
They now can continue walking around again, and when they are ready they need to come to a stop together. This is to get them into the next task and to build ensemble.
Now I want them to imagine that they are holding a bottle of pills. What is the colour of the bottle? What does it feel like, what material is it made from? What noise does it make when you shake it? What shape is it? What's the label like, what might it say? What's your relationship with this bottle of pills? Does it mean nothing to you, does it excite you, does it trigger you? What memories does it bring in for you?
Now open the bottle. Is the lid hard or easy to remove? How familiar are you with opening this bottle?
Now look at the contents inside. How many pills are there? What do they look like? What are your relationship with these pills? Do you want to have them, do you feel indifferent to them, do you feel disgusted by them? How does this make you react, does it make you react?
This is inspired by the student diary reading from this week, and the importance of giving reality and significance to props and miming.
Other props I could continue this exercise with, with walking and "resetting" eye contact in between:
Steve's bong
Jean's cigarettes
The papers on Bev's desk
Knife and fork at the dinner table

Wicked Fates
My blog is strictly 18+ and you bet my fic will have a lot of mature themes!
If you're not 18 years or older GET OUT NOW!
Summary: You didn't expect that night to change your life. But the fates had other plans. Matt Murdock aka The Devil of Hell's Kitchen shared his secret with you and now you had to guard it with your life.
Pairing: Matt Murdock x gn!reader
Word count: Somewhere near 2k
Tags: General character introduction, post season 3, Matt being an idiot, purely SFW, extreme slow burn, might have missed some.
A/N: Okay, this is my first ever fic (inhuman excited noises) and I've been sitting on this idea for a few months now. I let it marinate in my head until I couldn't bear it. So here you go!
I strongly believe in The Fates (Percy Jackson/ Greek mythology fan here!) and I believe that everyone comes into our life for some reason and though Daredevil is fictional he definitely has made my life very interesting.
Wicked Fates might be a little self-indulgent (just little, okay) but it sure will have a lot of angst, spice, fluff, basic daredevil violence, some religious trauma, eventual smut (?), and mentions of mental illness.
If you see any grammatical errors or spelling mistakes pretend that you're blind like Matt.

Wicked Fates | Ghost of a Chance
You didn’t expect that night to be life changing. It was a lazy day, you woke up feeling tired even though you slept better than most nights, work was monotonous, your evening dose of coffee was ruined by an emergency meeting, and you were ready to leave as soon as the clock hit six. You decided to go to the Korean convenience store on the other side of the neighbourhood, maybe a long walk could help you take your mind off things. You picked up your favourite tea, a few cans of Bong Bong, and a pack of onion rings. You gathered your supplies and were making your way back home when you passed by an alley. You heard someone wail, followed by the sound of some punches. You didn’t want any trouble but you also couldn’t let some innocent person get beaten to death. You pulled out your phone from your jeans pocket ready to dial for help. One flickering lightbulb helped you catch glimpses of a man dressed in all black. The top half of his face was covered with a black cloth, you recognised this outfit from the news.
The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen.
The news, as usual, had contrasting opinions on this man. Some said he was doing what the police couldn’t do, some said he was a menace to the society. The public, however, liked him. You heard stories around the office about how he saved a young boy from being kidnapped, how he often came to the rescue of those caught in the filthy hands of the Kitchen’s darkness. But he was famous for bringing down Wilson Fisk. You were leaning on the positive side of the Masked Man. Even though he hadn’t affected you directly, he helped those in dire need and that was convincing enough for you to form your opinions on him. And so, you made up your mind and you put your phone back into your pocket, letting The Devil do his work.
Caught up with all the thoughts running in your mind you didn’t see where you were going and made a loud crashing noise by stepping on a discarded soda can. Your immediate response was to look in his direction, hoping he didn’t hear it. What you didn’t know is that he had extremely sensitive ears and the soda can chose to be loud tonight. His head snapped to where you stood still, your hands clutching to your grocery bag. His one hand was clasping the man’s shirt collar and the other up in the air stuck in the middle of throwing another punch. He dropped his punch throwing hand and took a step back. Your body didn’t know fight or flight, it only knew freeze. You looked at the blood oozing out of the small slash on his cheek, ‘must be painful’ you thought. Then you heard him grumble a warning harshly.
“Get out!”
Careful not to step on another soda can you run. You’ve never sprinted this fast in your life before. You could’ve stopped running after a few blocks but your brain remembered the flight response and you ran all the way to your apartment.
Closing the door behind you, you sat on the floor gasping for air. You remained seated and removed your jacket and shoes and tossed them aside. You took out a can of Bong Bong, still chill, you silently thanked the soda gods and drank it. Your mind is finally catching up with everything that happened in the past hour. The pain in your legs settling in slowly, sweat drying off on your skin, shoulders and arms tired from carrying your bags…you needed a hot shower.
You stripped off whatever clothes you were wearing and put on your favourite playlist. Waving your hands and tapping your feet to the beats of the song you stepped into the shower. You let the scorching hot water hit your back and shoulders, you hug yourself tight and rest your head on your crossed arms. You melt into the song and let the water wash away the stress stored in your body.
You step out of the bathroom and shiver as the cold air strikes your warm skin. You put on an oversized T-shirt and tuck yourself into your bed. You check your phone for any messages and mail and reply to the important ones. You wonder if you should tell your best-friend, Leslee, about what happened earlier that night and almost hit the dial button but decide to not get her all worked up and plug your phone to the charger and fall back into your bed.
You try not to think of him but he’s the closest thing to a celebrity that you’ve almost met and your mind replays the seven minutes encounter as if it was a two-hour movie. Leaving a deep breath out, you close your eyes and let the waves of fatigue wash over you.
You wake up to your alarm going off. The TikTok alarm song startles you every time but you decide not to change it because it does the job of waking you up. You get ready for work as usual and exit your apartment. The streets are bustling with the working crowd and you join in and make your way to your office. You’re standing on the sidewalk waiting for the pedestrian light to turn green and you look on the opposite side. Tired faces, coffee cups in hands, mouths busy talking to someone, ears occupied by headphones, a walking cane…you follow the cane up to see two strong hands clasping the cane’s handle. You lift your curious gaze up to the person’s face and hear yourself gasp. Neck bruised and a small slash on the side of his cheek. You blink to make sure you weren’t mocked by your vision.
Nope. Still there.
‘It can’t be’ You think to yourself ‘he’s blind! has a walking cane and a pair of sunglasses on! It’s not even sunny enough for sunglasses!’
‘Maybe they both have the same bruise?’ another thought chimed in ‘how can they?’ barked the other.
“What in the name of sorcery?!” You whispered to yourself. You swore you saw that man move his head in your direction. You took a few steps back and hid behind an elderly woman.
‘Great! You’re hiding from a blind man.’
The lights turned green and the crowd started to move, you kept your position behind the elderly woman hoping she didn’t think you were trying to steal her wallet. You watched the man tap his cane and cross the street, people making way for him to move. You crossed him and saw him from the corner of your eyes. He cocked his head to your side and you let out an audible “Holy shit!”. You swiftly walked past your saviour, the older woman, and continued the pace till you reached the doors of your office building.
You sat down at your desk and tried to make sense of what you saw. Your heart was beating so loud and you could feel your ears starting to tingle. That man was blind. The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen was a vigilante…who was very good at what he did, who also happened to lurk in dark alleys, who also covered the top half of his face. It didn’t make sense. But everything that has happened in the world since 2008 didn’t either. Man flying around in a titanium suit, literal gods wrecking your planet, it was too much to process at this time of the day. What if he was a superpowered hero? It could be a reasonable possibility. You were snapped out of your puzzling thoughts when your colleague called you over to discuss something.
On the other side of the neighbourhood Matt was anxious. His thoughts were running wild, too. Did you recognise him? What if you did? There’s no way you could have! Then why did your heart rate spike? Why did you hide behind that older woman? Why did you curse out loud? His thoughts were cut off by Foggy’s question.
“What’s on your mind, Matt?”
“Wha-uh, nothing. Just a headache from last night.” he replied with a startled sigh.
“How long were you patrolling for last night? You shouldn’t be out till the sun comes up Matt! I thought you’d stop ruining your health after putting Fisk away.” Foggy was concerned. How couldn’t he be? He cared too much about Matt.
“I promise I went home before sunrise.”
“Pinky promise?” Foggy stretched his hand across Matt’s desk with his pinky finger out.
Matt chuckled and connected his pinky with Foggy’s “Pinky promise”.
Karen walked in with three cups of coffee and a few case files.
Foggy and Karen were now used to seeing Matt show up with bruises and cuts. Karen helped Matt with concealing his bruises if they had to go to court or meet up with a client. It doesn’t bring more attention to him anymore.
“Um..what’s going on? Matt, don’t make promises you can’t keep.” She said jokingly.
“Oh! Too late, Page. A promise can’t be broken or said out loud! Didn’t you go to preschool?” Foggy was never late with his sometimes-corny jokes.
“Whatever. Anyway! Updates! How are we looking with Mr. Romano?” Karen said, setting the coffee cups down on Matt’s desk.
“Aren’t you eager to work?” Matt chided.
“Well, unlike you Matt, I’d like to get paid.” Karen replied.
“Alright, alright! Gosh, you both are tough to work with. Okay, here’s what I have” Foggy took his cup of coffee from the desk and continued with everything they had on Mr. Romano's case.
Matt tried his best to listen but his mind betrayed his efforts and went back to you. He should really be more careful with where he conducts his late-night investigations. He was worried. What if his secret gets out? He can’t risk putting Foggy’s and Karen’s life in danger, not again. He had to nip this in the bud. He knew what he was doing tonight.
You decided to order take out tonight. Your work had kept you busy the whole day and the mysterious blind man hadn’t crossed your mind even once. Okay, maybe once…or twice. But the night is still young and you are alone in your apartment with your thoughts and food, what’s more of a comfortable time? You resumed where you left off at lunch. You had put all information available together- Daredevil works only in the nights, favours the dark, covers the top half of his face. Absence of light and absence of sight…could he actually be? You shook your head dismissing the silly thought. ‘You’re just over-thinking and bored’ you think to yourself. You had to stop before this became an obsession. You put on an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and ate dinner.
Matt, sorry, Daredevil was out hunting for his prey tonight. He didn’t know who he was looking for. He didn’t know where he should be looking. He only caught a whiff of your scent but it was masked by the strong smell of coffee and other pedestrians walking past him. Your heartbeat had been erratic, probably because you just saw something you shouldn’t have, and he couldn't narrow his hearing to a specific heartbeat. He should’ve turned around and followed you to your office at least then he could’ve tracked you down after work. He was frustrated. He searched throughout the neighbourhood hoping to find something but all his efforts failed. Matt wasn’t ready to give up. He couldn't let his sacred secret out in the daylight. Tomorrow, he was going to find you. He was determined.
The Devil works hard but Matt Murdock works harder.
Thankyou for reading my work <3

Book/Movie/Show Recommendations
The Southern Reach Trilogy: if you enjoyed the 2019 movie "Annihilation," you'll definitely enjoy the book it was based on and its sequels "Authority" and "Acceptance." They're quite a bit different from the movie, and obviously the sequels expand on the premise in various ways, but if you enjoyed the surrealist sci-fi horror of the film, then you've gotta read the books.
Psycho Goreman: This movie is just plain fun. It combines 80s-style practical effects with sitcom-style family humor, body horror, and Power Rangers-style action. If you go into this movie expecting to have a fun time while not having to digest super thoughtful themes and concepts, you'll have a grand old time.
Freaked!: Do you like the Bill and Ted movies? Do you like early 90s pop culture references? Do you like comic body horror, practical effects, and gross-out humor? Then watch Alex Winter's directorial debut, Freaked! It's on YouTube for free!
Neuromancer: Are you a big fan of cyberpunk? Then read the novel that started it all! So many fundamental cyberpunk concepts were originated in this book, and it weaves an absolutely fascinating and engaging narrative.
John Dies at the End series: Yes, I'm gonna beg you to read this series until the day I die. Surrealist and Eldritch horror comedy at it's finest. The movie ain't half bad, either.
Doom Patrol: Yes, another thing I will plug until the day I die. An DC/HBO Max show about a group of misfit superheroes. Expect some of the weirdest episode concepts you've ever seen. It's got Matt Bomer and Brendan Fraser in it, and LGBT rep out the wazoo, what are you waiting for?
Trust: Do you like Luca Marinelli? Do you wanna watch him play an evil 70s Italian manslut Mafia member? Yeah you do. Go watch this miniseries fictionalizing the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III. If that doesn't seal the deal for you, it's got Brendan Fraser in it!
The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm: Yes, it's technically a YA novel, but don't let that turn you off. This Afrofuturistic novel is set in 2170s Zimbabwe, where the children of a powerful general are kidnapped and it's up to a trio of detective brothers with mutant abilities to rescue them. Still waiting for it to be adapted into a streaming miniseries starring Michael B Jordan and Willow Smith. Nextflix/Hulu/HBO/Amazon Prime, where you at?
Snowpiercer: One of the few Bong Joon-Ho movies to be originally written and performed in English, this movie based on French novel is about the occupants of a train that contains all of the surviving humans after climate change causes the Earth to become an uninhabitable deep freezer. Expect a lot of the same themes about class disparity as his much more famous film, "Parasite"
Mad Max: Fury Road: Tom Hardy. Charlize Theron. Amazing stunts and practical effects. Themes of cult mentality, patriarchy, female liberation, resource scarcity, and found family all set against a backdrop of souped-up cars, suicidal devotees, fanatical warlords, and loud guitar music in a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland.
Watership Down: You know that animated film with the rabbits that scarred you horribly as a small child? Read the novel it was based on!
Prospect: A retro-futuristic Space Western with Pedro Pascal as one of the main characters. Go watch it if you're a fan of Firefly and/or Cowboy Bebop.
Attack the Block: John Boyega's film debut, before he got fucked over by Disney/Lucasfilm. Sci-fi horror comedy about an alien invasion in a tower block in London. Themes about class disparity, especially about how poor children in the urban UK are immediately assumed to be dangerous criminals.

Tim Staffell Appreciation Weekend: February 24th-26th
Everyone mark your calendars because Tim Staffell Appreciation Weekend 2022 is officially happening!
This year the event will be held from Thursday February 24th (Tim's birthday!) through Saturday February 26th.
As with last year, the goal is simply to create some content that has Tim as the main focus rather than our Queen Boys, though they're certainly welcome to make an appearance in your work too! All creations are welcome, whether that's fic, art, edits, meta, or anything else you want to make!
The tag for this event is #StaffellWeekend2022. There's also an AO3 Collection here that you can add your works to, and there’s now a Smile fandom tag that you can use to tag your works as well!
Any and all ships are welcome, as long as the focus remains primarily on Tim and/or his creative projects. Please avoid villain!Tim tropes if possible. Angst is fine but there's already an overwhelming amount of content where Tim is the villain simply out of convenience. Let's balance things out with some more nuanced takes!
It doesn't matter how much you know about Tim, everyone is welcome to participate in this!
Below the cut are prompt lists and resources about Tim’s life and work. Finally, please reblog this to help spread the word! We had such a great turnout last year and I'd love to see the same happen this time!
Prompt Lists:
There's five prompts given for each day, including a mix of generic ideas and events specific to Tim's life. You can mix and match prompts however you want, or ignore them entirely and do your own thing!
Day 1: Thursday Feb. 24th
Reckless
"We could get arrested for this."

Translation:
Evening
Late evening,
A firefly wanders about
In the mist,
A pale hand becomes visible
In the moonlight,
A lonely child plays
He catches the fly and says,
"Oh fool! Where are you off to?
I see, you don't remember me, do you?
We were friends...
Have you forgotten about that night,
Of that midsummer storm?"

Part 7 –
53 of summer camp left
“So what you’re trying to tell me,” croaked Pricilla, lighting a cigarette and taking a long dramatic drag, “Is that you snuck your campers on the boats and went to the stilt house, which is strictly forbidden by the way, and did what again?”
“We found Madison’s dress, Miss P,” explained Caroline, her hair still damp.
Her and Sarah had hurried to get dressed and ran to Pricilla’s office as quickly as their feet could take them. The smell of the dress was lingering around them, the tacky perfume so in their face that the girls were sure that it had been sprayed on it that same day.
Pricilla rolled her eyes at them, not impressed at all, “You see, all I see is a couple of rule-breaking bimbos putting their noses in places that are prohibited and dragging my campers along,” she took yet another drag of her cigarette, “I hate to do this girls, but I’m going to have to deduct points from both of your teams for this,”
Caroline’s eyes grew so big, they could’ve popped out of her head, “Are you being serious? We literally found solid evidence that Madison could be somewhere around here and all you can think about is… deducting points?!”
Pricilla tutted, “Oh, Carrie, when will you ever learn the importance of the Will-all-hail banquet? It’s been a decade and you’re still questioning the graveness of my scoring system,”
“Screw the scoring system!” Caroline raised her voice in the heat of the moment, “What about Madison?”
Pricilla rolled her eyes, “How’d you even know it’s hers anyway? Could be anyone’s, hell, it could even be mine for all I know,”
Sarah spoke up this time, “It’s the perfume, Miss P,” she explained, “I’d recognize that smell anywhere. It’s the old money smell, Madison used to wear it all the time, even when we were kids, it’s part of the reason I despise her so much, I couldn’t stand that smell,”
Pricilla looked at Sarah as if she’d fallen from the ceiling, “So you’re telling me that I have to believe that you,” she pointed at Caroline, “willingly snuck your group onto that barely standing stilt house to do God knows what and found this drape, and you,” she pointed at Sarah this time, making her slightly jump, “can guarantee that this belonged to a girl who disappeared 10 days ago because you recognize the smell?”
“We know it sounds crazy, Miss P, but if you’ll -” Caroline began talking, but Pricilla cut her off.
“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear about you and Maybank’s escapade to the lake house and you’ll pretend you didn’t find this dress, okay?”
“But -”
“No buts, missy, do you know what this can cost me?”
As Pricilla and Caroline began arguing, Sarah took a seat in one of the futon chairs in the camp director’s office and had a look around. If she’d ever questioned why everyone believed Pricilla to be a hotheaded pothead or mild alcoholic, now she knew – the office looked like a hippie hoarder’s wonderland. There was plants, incents, accessories and dust everywhere, she was pretty sure half the vases of the plants were actually bongs, which she thought John B and JJ would greatly enjoy - if she’d learned anything about John B and JJ in their past 10 days of working together, it would have to be their love for all things marijuana. Behind Pricilla’s desk, under the light of the sole window in the entire wooden room, stood a large bookcase, except there was hardly any books on it. The shelves were littered with odd little porcelain figures of smiling animals, dusty half-empty bottles of alcohol and picture frames of people Sarah didn’t recognize at all. One person was a recurring character in most of the photos, it was a girl who looked to be not much older than Sarah herself. She had long mousy brown hair and wore funky accessories in most of the pictures. Sarah guessed her to be Pricilla’s infamous estranged daughter. She sort of resembled her mother, thought Sarah, what with the quirky accessories and beady eyes. Sarah squinted to examine the jewelry the girl in the photos was wearing, a recurring theme being what looked like a firefly brooch. Sarah scoffed at the horrid choice of accessory and turned back around to look at Caroline who was still arguing with Pricilla.
“You can’t just let this happen,” she pleaded, “What if she’s out there and she needs our help? What if this is her leaving us a clue!”
“Zip it, Windsor!” snapped Pricilla, “I’ve just about had it with your shenanigans!”
Sarah decided that this whole argument was pointless and stood up, interjecting, “You know what, Miss P? You’re totally right! We shouldn’t have been lurking and we will totally learn from our mistakes,” she grabbed Caroline and pulled her towards the door, giving her a stern look, as if to tell her to not protest, “Thank you for not deducting points from our groups, we’ll be sure to not mention this to anyone! You have a good day now, Miss P!” with that, she led Caroline outside and slammed the door.
“What’d you do that for?” Caroline snapped.
“Even a blind person could see that that was a dead end, Carrie,” Sarah explained, leading Caroline back to their cabin, “I can’t believe that I’m going to say this, but I think your boyfriend was right,” before Caroline could correct her about how JJ was not her boyfriend, she spoke again, “Madison’s somewhere out there and if we don’t take matters into our own hands, one of us could also get in trouble,”

More Eugene stuff from my head.
There isn’t much to go one about him, but a few lines and whatever conjecture you can extrapolate from tiny details. Dude loved soda and did not mind it was over 20 years expired based on all the cans littering his workspace. He surrounded himself with books and knowledge and grew weed for Jackson even if it would get him in trouble.
When it comes to who he is, he left his family to do what he thought was the right thing with the Fireflies. Moreover he left his daughter and to his wife that was unforgivable. In her letter that we find. the abandonment of his daughter stands out:
“Until then, I have to put your daughter first. The Fireflies will be fine without you. Your daughter won't. She keeps asking me when you're coming home. I can't lie to her anymore.”
I don’t think Eugene would be a grumpy old man, based on how goofy he is in his photos, and the fact that Ellie said she thinks he’s funny. I think he’s a chill old, “The Dude” type, and would be open, trying to do his best.
He gives Dina her own bong, makes sure she has weed. And yeah he was lonely, but I think he found someone who reminded himself of him when he was younger (dude totally partied) and that was less lonely.
He not only tells Dina what kind of things he did and what kind of person he was, you don’t just tell the kind of things he did to some one you don’t trust. He also teaches her an invaluable skill set. He passes on knowledge and value. They spent enough time together that Dina is exceptionally talented with fixing electronics. She laments the fact he didn’t tell her about the library, (but why would he hide it from me?) that she could have helped him and genuinely seems saddened he didn’t let her help with whatever he was working on, possibly cause he always involved her with other projects.
I’d bet that he saw Dina as a second chance in the same way Joel saw Ellie, the difference being with Joel and Ellie is how Joel’s behavior towards saving Ellie though borne from love, was selfish. We’re all glad she didn’t die, but his actions weren’t altruistic.
And story wise, character wise, Dina was always there to show us how people respond to trauma differently. How Ellie’s trauma is all consuming and Dina can cope with her trauma, can still find reasons to wake up despite the pain and loss she’s endured.
The person Dina is, is bright and lively and based on what little there is to go on, Eugene seems like the kind of chill guy that would see that and, instead of feeling immense guilt over his own daughter, see the potential Dina had and teach her. because here is this kid that he’s been partnered with and she’s whip smart and surprisingly good with a gun. They complement each other enough that they have been partnered together for at least a year or more according to patrol logs, and he has a chance to be a father figure that he ran from being years ago.
I’ve always thought of him as more altruistic, wanting to provide an alternative medicine for people in Jackson, hunkering down in an abandoned library to fix and preserve a litany of items and teaching someone who was overwhelmed when she arrived at the gates how to be a member of a community. I get the vibe that he fostered a lot of Dina’s personal growth and let her lead him through it. Helping her when she needed help and teaching her what she wanted to know.
Yeah, anyway i feel there is a whole lot of potential to Eugene and Dina’s history. One thing that is clear is they were close, in a mentor student way. but also in more of a found family way.
I mean, they even named a sheep after him so there has to be more to it, right?
#it's a eugene day i guess#sorry for the spam#but i have thoughts and a thing i wanna work on in the future so i'm putting this out in the world#eugene linden#dina#the last of us 2#not meta but meta adjacent
