Not what I usually post but I'm not getting quora just to ask this

Mermaiders/Merfolkers, professional or not,

do you know what I could substitute for a finfun monofin that doesn't float and also accommodates large feet? (I literally had to cut holes in my monofin to fit my feet inside and be able to remove them safely)

Something that would fit about a size 10, cheap, and again, DOES NOT FLOAT (I'm not gonna drown trying to swim underwater while my feet float to the surface) would be preferable, but the price isn't that big of an issue I guess, I can save up.

I keep wanting to train underwater but before I can do that I need to not be risking death any more than usual by going in the water.

For my followers seeing this, yes, I am training to be a merman, lol. Surprise?

Okay, so I like imagining what Twelve was doing in his browser history by imagining that he just got really into various niche/strange hobbies.

Mostly I do this by just projecting my own hobbies, because obviously - was his browser history full of No Man's Sky (embarrassing because why would a time and space traveller want to play a video game about space travel when you can do the real thing?) Or maybe it was full of very specific opinions about mechanical keyboards? Or honestly any social media account I think would be something the Doctor would be embarrassed enough about to discourage people seeing, but not so much as to be genuinely uncomfortable, which matches the tone of those jokes in the show.

But I also enjoy mermaiding as a hobby, and though I haven't been swimming recently (winter + chlorinated pools + dry skin = agony), the idea would not let go so here we are:

A new tail? That sounds so cool omg! I love your whole blogs aesthetic, but thats something you can expect from a fish woman's blog<3 The ocean has always fascinated me-- especially when I was younger! I have a bunch of ocs revolving around that sort of thing.

Also, yeah! I freaking love my ocs-- I'm actually in the process of creating a doc. Fang is just the one I'm focusing on the most, sometimes I feel like I can relate to her the most.

Awww thanks!! Favorite major/recurring characters from most to least (sorry if I forgot any characters, there's so many of them)...

Emily. She's the main character, has a good balance of strengths and flaws, has several tremendous character arcs, and is an overall relatable character. Emily's especially relatable to me. It helps that I discovered the series when I was her age. And just like Emily I have mixed heritage, moved a lot which made making friends difficult, have a lifelong childhood friend who's like my Shona, had a bigoted teacher publicly humiliate me in front of the entire class which infuriated my mom (unlike Emily's mom she actually confronted my teacher), had a bully from middle school later apologize and make amends with me, had to split time between different schools, I even later learned to swim with a (FinFun) mermaid tail. Plus I share the same birthday as Emily (September 4)!

Mary Penelope. Likewise she has a good balance of strengths and flaws that show for the entirety of the series, has several tremendous character arcs, almost always took accountability for her mistakes, and has an intriguing backstory on how Emily came into the world. And she is a much better mom than most fictional moms! She shows patience and kindness when her daughter makes big mistakes, sets flexible boundaries, takes time to answer all her daughter's questions as best as she can, is 100% honest to her daughter, immediately notices and checks in on her daughter's emotional needs, and willingly throws herself into risky situations to protect her daughter. Over time she grows smarter and more aware of Emily's schemes. Also Emily’s mom realizes and admits her parenting mistakes VERY early on in her story, then spends the remainder of her story changing her ways to be a better parent. ABSOLUTE W MOM THERE.

Jake. Again he has an intriguing story that kicked off Emily's existence and a good balance of strengths vs. flaws. I'm ranking him slightly below Mary Penelope, only because after Book 3 he's just this kinda boring perfect parent who's never allowed to be wrong. Honestly everything I loved about Jake is in the first 3 books! Like his arc of learning how to be a better father to Emily (he and Mandy were the best parts of Book 2). Just because he's a kind and easygoing person, doesn't automatically mean he's a good parent. Which makes sense since he was gone for most of Emily's life. He had to learn how to stop babying Emily, how to set clear boundaries for Emily, how to also respect Emily's boundaries, how to acknowledge and validate Emily's feelings, how to help Emily face her fears, and ultimately do what's best for Emily in the long run (even against Emily's will). I also love Jake's slow rise to power from Neptune's prisoner to Neptune's loyal servant. He honestly earned it. His brief yet memorable appearances always raised lots of interesting questions for me, about himself and about the future of a possible human-merfolk coexistence.

Mr. Beeston. He has the biggest redemption arc of all, has an interesting backstory, and some of the biggest plot twists. He really emphasizes the fact that sometimes forgiveness has to be fucking earned.

Mystic Millie. Like Mr. Beeston she's also full of surprises and plot twists. Despite her mistakes, she was surprisingly competent and smarter than she let on. And she provides great comic relief!!

Shona. She's one of the most memorable characters!! Her trademark "Swishy!" phrase, her long blonde hair that she always takes great care of, was always kind to her friends even when they don't return that kindness, is the loyal friend we all wish we had, and she had her biggest arc in Book 7 with learning how to be a better friend.

Mandy. Her on-off friendship with Emily was interesting and always suspenseful. It's more than just a straight enemies-to-friends arc and I liked that. Honestly she and Jake are the best parts of Book 2. Throughout the series I never knew if Mandy would be Emily's friend or enemy. Book 9 especially emphasizes that. Glad it ultimately ended with these 2 keeping their friendship intact.

Aaron. He's a nice guy with a pretty cool backstory, and while helping Emily figure out where she belongs, he later figures out where he belongs.

Neptune. I like him for the same reasons as Mandy, for his enemies-to-friends arc and on-off relationship with Emily. Except he and Emily were never friends, maybe "allies" is a better term. Every time he appears, you never knew if he's be gonna with or against her. He's the best part of Book 5, where we learn much more of his backstory, and it's the first time he and Emily actually work together.

hi!! would you mind talking about being a merperson a little??

is getting the tail on really hard? is swimming with it on kind of scary at first? have you ever done a job as a merperson or is it just more a hobby for you?

i always swam with my legs pressed together as a kid bc i wanted to be a mermaid^^ i’m really interested in getting a tail, and i even have a place i could use it!! but it looks sort of intimidating.

i’m sure they’re probably a lot of money for a good tail and i would be so scared that i would try it out once and get overwhelmed and not wanna do it again

Being a merperson is lots of fun!! I was the same way growing up; having lived in Florida my whole life (for better or worse) I did, and still do, a LOT of swimming and I absolutely loved to play mermaids and even got a pair of flippers as a kid to better pretend in our pool at the time!

Getting the tail on can be annoying sometimes when it comes to securing ur feet into foot pockets of the monofin inside the tail, and depending on where you're swimming you may have to put it on in the water and that can be risky and difficult to do. I like having a spot I can drop in after putting it on, on dry land. I've had spots where I've belly crawled myself into the water and risked ripping my tail and I've also been carried in when I was lighter, but now I'm learning how to put mine on in the water after seeing other merfolk do it with fabric tails.

My above tails are made of neoprene/scuba knit fabric and have a monofin inside of them as shown below (the bigger tail flukes have a clear plastic vinyl fluke shaper that the monofin is sandwiched and secured into before being put into the tail via zipper):

With that said, I didn't get my first mermaid tail until I was about 26, I wanna say, bc I was rlly nervous about being in public swimming since I didn't have my own personal pool, plus they aren't the cheapest and I didn't exactly know where to look for good ones other than Mertailor and the amount of designs he has made can be overwhelming, especially with the price being considered of his monofins and tail skins.

Currently, it's just a hobby of mine - but I'd love to do parties someday and maybe even become a swim coach for new merfolk joining the community! (There's A LOT OF US btw, check out MermagicCon and the Netflix show about us! Some of my local merfolk pod is on the show!) just gotta go thru mermaid diving certification courses, performance insurance, making a company, and going thru swim coach training (not cheap lol)

But ye! A previous friend of mine got me my first tail for Christmas and it was definitely NOT a beginners tail (the big green and blue one was my first tail and technically that one is an advanced tail) so thankfully I had bubby and lifeguards around to assist if needed and was a good swimmer but it's still very much a learning curve and can be intimidating esp if you don't have goggles on and can't see in addition to having ur legs bound and being underwater 😅 that's definitely something you gotta push thru in safe conditions.

For beginners, I'd definitely recommend starting with just the monofin (I reccommend Linden as it's a great one plus it's at a great price) to get used to the swimming motions needed and having ur feet restricted but also to practice emergency tail removal in the water (FinFun has a video on how to do this on YT) then once you feel ready - move to a tail with a small fluke, take swimming classes if possible or if need-be, and have a swim buddy at all times when using your tail (even advanced swimmers need one for safety as it is a dangerous hobby/occupation) The fabric tail companies that I recommend:

$ - FinFun (Elite tails are their advanced collection, everything else should have smaller flukes and are much cheaper than the big tails)

$$ - Mertailor (Tails can be affordable but he makes the monofins specific to the flukes usually and those cost a fair bit)

$$$ - FinFolk (Most tails are bigger flukes, limited designs available due to their constant Tail of the Month rotations being their main thing)

Tho FinFun and Mertailor do usually hold sales multiple times a year so def keep an eye out for those!

It's definitely not a cheap hobby to be a part of and you have to make sure not to get knock off tails as they're usually made of the wrong material or very poorly and can increase ur risk of dr0wning while swimming, plus knock offs are usually stolen designs from individuals or small businesses that make their own tails. It is a very very welcoming community, it is not without drama though so do keep that in mind as well, but personally I've only watched drama unfold I've never actually been a part of it myself despite being in a pod of hundreds of merfolk.

All in all, I've met so many wonderful folks in this community and it has helped me learn it's okay to stand out and be yourself no matter how weird people might think that is. I've had so many people stop to talk with me on the beach, of all ages, some have asked to take photos of me or with me and everyone I've met always just has this curiosity about it.

Anytime I go to the springs I usually have people ask about it, or ask if their kids can look at the tail, or tell me how cool it is or that they have a tail too and it's just amazing how supportive people can be about things that might seem unusual. There will be people that are unkind about it, but I've noticed they hide more behind comment sections online rather than being outright about it in person - it's normal and okay to be nervous at first, but it's really so much fun.

The TikTok mermaid community and Facebook groups are great ways to find local merfolk pods! I also am a part of a merfolk discord group as well ^^ I just wish it wasn't such an expensive hobby but honestly at this point even my art hobbies are expensive so I just gotta save up/pick and choose when I can 😅

The blue one is def gorgeous! It's a great tail, but def getting a different monofin for it. I've heard Linden makes for better propulsion and better foot pockets compared to the FinFun elite monofin

I got to try on my friend’s fancy mermaid tail today. The rainbow tail is mine and I love it very much, and it’s lightweight because it’s made of swimsuit material. The fancier tail is made of neoprene, so it’s much heavier and harder to swim in (my friend compares it to the difference between a wool blanket and a piece of tissue paper lol) but I managed okay! I just want to be a mermaid forever 🧜🏽‍♀️

My friend has two of the fancy tails (different versions of her favorite design) and here’s both fins together. I love the dramatic flukes 💗
