Not what I usually post but I'm not getting quora just to ask this

Mermaiders/Merfolkers, professional or not,

do you know what I could substitute for a finfun monofin that doesn't float and also accommodates large feet? (I literally had to cut holes in my monofin to fit my feet inside and be able to remove them safely)

Something that would fit about a size 10, cheap, and again, DOES NOT FLOAT (I'm not gonna drown trying to swim underwater while my feet float to the surface) would be preferable, but the price isn't that big of an issue I guess, I can save up.

I keep wanting to train underwater but before I can do that I need to not be risking death any more than usual by going in the water.

For my followers seeing this, yes, I am training to be a merman, lol. Surprise?

olympics coming up…… athlete aus on the mind….. satoru as a swimmer….. unreasonably large wingspan…. huge hands..... thinks “official” competitions and tournaments are boring because he can’t use the goofy purple googly eyes goggles he likes to practice in…… practices at ungodly hours solely because he likes when the pool is empty because that means you’ll dip your feet in at the edge and be there to greet him with a kiss when he’s finished his laps….. they bring up the stats board and it’s just his name ten times before the next fastest person and he could still lap them, and even tho he’ll always put so much pressure on himself to be the best, it’s worth it to have you hold his face and tell him you’re proud of him... he’s gotten so much merch from events and sponsorships and he used to think they just created clutter but that all changes when you start to wear his clothes (esp the ones with his name on it… he’s not proud to admit that does Something to him)…. always looks up to the stands when he finishes a race and if he knows you’re not there, he looks right at the camera, draws an infinity sign with his fingers, and blows a kiss (which, some commentators routinely call “unsportsmanlike conduct” but he doesn’t care, and always, publicly says he’ll pay the fees if it means blowing a kiss to his girl at home)

Dear non-Black creators !

Gentle reminder that Ice isn't your own personal volunteer sensitivity reader and that a lot of the questions you're asking have been answered in the lessons kindly provided for free. Other questions can be answered by using Pinterest (for hairstyles references for instance), google or prioritising Black creators when you do some research.

You also might not realize how "othering" some of the questions you ask are. Maybe you're so hesitant and lost because you see your Black characters as Black before you see them as characters at all. Re-reading Ice's lessons and taking the time to truly internalize them might help a lot.

I know most of you mean well and want to improve but excepting even more free labour will eventually ruin your intent to impact ratio. Some of you only interact with Black content creators who you expect to be available to personally interact with you and it shows.

I want to be excited for the live action Little Mermaid so badly

The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie. Anyone who knows me knows I'm obsessed with mermaids as a whole and will watch any media that has them. Hell, I own my own tails and monofins. But every time I see a gif or a video for the new Little Mermaid, I cringe

(btw, this is NOT because of the casting. If you're against this movie because Ariel is black, you're a racist piece of shit and this post isn't for you)

My issue lies with the CGI. It just looks so FAKE. We've seen through the course of movies and TV shows that use it that CGI does not age well, and that's because technology is constantly improving. What was impressive in 2005 is not impressive in 2023 (Just look at Aquamarine, another movie about mermaids). And the CGI on Ariel and her sisters already looks fake and the movie isn't even out yet!

The first image is flat. Sure, it's colorful, but it's flat. It's fake. Halle herself is the most beautiful and alive part of the image, because everything else is fake

The difference?

H20 had costume designers, ones specifically trained in mermaid tail making, HAND CRAFT every tail on the show. All of the scales were hand laid, all the tails molded to fit the actors/actresses perfectly, painted by hand

Let's even look at someone with no affiliation to TV or movies:

This is Mermaid Linden, a very well known (in the mermaid community) professional mermaid. You can tell her tail is not as high quality as the ones made for H20 (though it's still a VERY expensive tail) - but it still looks like it's a part of her. You can still see the details. Because professional mermaid tails are also all handmade and molded to fit each person. Even if they don't lay every individual scale, good professional mermaid tail makers are very meticulous about what they do.

This is what happens when Disney refuses to pay practical effects artists. We could have had beautiful, handmade tails that would look real on screen for decades to come and could be reused for promotional purposes - instead, they're underpaying and overworking their non-unionized employees to make CGI tails that don't even look real now.

(to be clear, I'm not shitting on the artists. As I said, they're being underpaid and overworked. This is not their fault)

And before anyone comes and says "But swimming in those is difficult!" Absolutely it is. You should never swim in a professional level tail (or even just fabric tails) without practice and training. Which Disney could have given the cast if they were willing to PAY people (the cast of H20 [a TV SHOW] literally learned how to be mermaids on set. It's been done before)

Disney's "Live Action" needs to be rebranded as "CGI with some real people tossed in" because that's all any of these remakes have been, and it's exhausting when I look at what we could have had.

it's halloween again!

mertaro and the merpups seeing y/n's house all decorated and wonder what its about. maybe some of the costumed trick or treaters see mer jolyne and think she's just in a "really nice mermaid costume" 😂

She would fully be wanting to go around trick or treating too. Just get a wheelbarrow and get her along (if you manage to convince Jotaro to let you).

I would imagine Jotaro gets a kick out of scaring the piss out of kids just by opening the door. He may be stationed by it for like 30-50 minutes before getting too annoyed with the constant ringing 😂

Life of a Mer on land is tough, guys, ya can hardly move.

All in all, please take care explaining the holiday though because otherwise there is gonna be a very warped view of humanity and/or some injuries because of a startled mer lashing out.

He quickly becomes and industry favorite due to his skill, enthusiasm, and of course the lack of pro male mermaids. Annabeth starts to get nervous about all the offers he gets to go full time and travel, but he always turns them down with a simple, “Sorry, but I promised my mom and my girl I would finish college.”

Hello!! Here’s some info about my mermaid au

(in general for this post; next time, I’ll focus on Wolfwood ^_^)

Also bare with me cause this is a LONGGG ONE

The setting is an alternate version of Gunsmoke, in which there are little to no seas and Vash lives in one, close to the town of Jeneora Rock. As for the reputation of Vash with the citizens, it’s slightly different. For one, most of them theorize that he’s a ruthless and unforgiving monster in the sea, ready to destroy any city he visits, which Meryl is trying to figure out; she reports a lot of notices about him, and Milly gives her a hand in each of her reports, as well as Wolfwood, an ex-priest and a pirate, exploring each sea he can with his brother, Livio.

The humanoid monstrosity, as people call him, destroys cities with his “tentacles” and constantly goes after the power plants, whose power comes from these sea creatures, known as plants; they have the same abilities as the original ones, but their appearance resembles that of a leafy seadragon, here’s what they look like!

Once Meryl, Milly, Wolfwood, and Livio find Vash, they realize he isn’t as big of a threat as people say he is, nor is he a monster; he’s just a merman, at least that’s how he presents as for now.

He travels through a lot of seas but mostly spends his time in a cave with his brother, Knives, who isn’t as fond of humans as Vash. When he finds out some humans interacted with him, he decides to sink Wolfwood’s ship and kill both Wolfwood and Livio—at least that’s what everyone in the town thinks.

Nai used them to his advantage; his tentacles gripped them and took them to the depths of his cave. Livio was able to escape, but Wolfwood wasn’t as lucky, almost being transformed fully into an orca with the help of one of the humans he experimented with. Vash rescues him halfway through the process, making him a merman just like Vash.

As for Livio, people don’t know much about him; he was eventually captured by Knives again, then turned into a merman as well, yet he keeps the two away, letting them live under one condition: bring Vash to him and show him the horrors of humanity he perceives.

That’s practically all of it!! Hopefully, I get to show more about this AU in the future ^_^

Remember when Splash (1984) was in development for a remake?

I still think it's doable. Especially in modern times with professional mermaids. It would emphasize the original's themes of pretending to be a different species. Just imagine, a mermaid pretending to be human in a time when humans now pretend to be mermaids for a living. How would Madison feel about that? Would Madison be more honest about being a mermaid? Would Madison and Allen be flattered or insulted at people getting paid to impersonate her kind? Would they view mermaid shows as the mermaid equivalent of blackface?

Would Allen still not know how to swim, in our time when swimming lessons have become more accessible since the 1980s?

Also a “Splash” remake reset in the 2020s could work with today’s social media. People now use social media to change and hide their identities more easily than ever. Just like Madison does. And Allen trying online dating would further emphasize how lonely he is. I could so easily see Allen and Madison starting an online relationship. Eventually Allen would want to meet her in person, which would lead to the same shenanigans of the original film.

~ theater shows discussion ~

properly discussing each show my high school has done since i've been there :3 (and ones to come next year; aka my senior year). based purely off of reasons. not based on how they were/will be casted unless that plays a MAJOR part in why not to do the show.

this will be updated as shows occur <3 (aka the senior year ones will be updated cus they aren't set in stone). also no hate to our director if he sees this. i just need to genuinely yap about why i think we should do certain shows.

last year; (my sophomore year)

frozen jr; it was a perfect show to start off the school's theater company and begin to get jr high and older involved in the plays. it was well planned and the costumes were wonderful. everything worked out pretty nicely and was overall fun. there were no downsides. while the cast was pretty big, it didn't feel overwhelming.

midsummer night's dream; again, a fun show to do for my first year there. i wasn't expecting the role i got and was expecting to be cut but i wasn't. the cast was small and tight knit but that was perfect because it created no drama. enough people to fit the roles + extra fairies to create a vibe.

beauty and the beast; an appropriate show for the ages of everyone involved. gender didn't matter in most roles and it even actively encouraged some more guys to audition and get themselves in the shows. it was pretty nice minus some of the drama (all of which ended up resolved well). however, the director didn't give the silly girls their bow together which made us feel like we weren't as important as he wanted to show us to be. he gave everyone bows (even minor characters) minus us. also he doubled the three in the movie into six. and then double casted it. (i genuinely do love double casting but yknow. that's a lot of silly girls.) still really fun overall.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ this year; (my junior year)

crucible; eeeee a more risky show but overall really fun and powerful! i love learning about the salem witch trials and by doing this show i connected more with a topic i already found an interest in and created something (in my opinion) entertaining. the cast was wonderful and no drama really occurred because like midsummer, it was a tighter knit cast. and the director was able to give more people an opportunity by including an ensemble to be in the court scene, giving others more chances to be included. also i barely had any lines so i was chilling a lot of the time and enjoyed myself. i didn't know who to try out for and at first was a bit disappointed in what i got but i learned to love it, plus i memorized like all of act one while i was there. while it did stir some controversy amongst some parents, those who saw it did enjoy it. especially since we warned them not to take their children.

annie jr; we have a cast of mostly girls, as most theater departments do. therefore, this was a perfect show to do. there were so many orphans and since it was an all girls orphanage, it was practically one of the best shows for us to do. the only problem was that most of the orphans were older which made the older kids feel like they wouldn't be able to get any of the other roles. (like they couldn't get named orphans or annie because they were too old.) obviously they could get the adult rules but still. it was still a really fun show (even though i almost died multiple times during hard knock life. and didn't even get to perform at the end anyways.) but i watched it on the opening show and really enjoyed it! no drama (minus a couple comments in rehearsal but it got fixed so all was good)

taming of the shrew; i'm going to be honest. i have no idea because i was not in this one. this show was kind of the moment im like 'okay im going to take a break because i've done a lot of shows in a row and i'm drained.' but overall i think it is pretty good for our high school to do!

little shop of horrors; this show has yet to be done by us and the cast list comes out tomorrow. i do think it is an appropriate show for us to do though and i am excited to see who gets what. however.... director PLEASE allow gender bent casting. seymour can be played by a girl, it's not crazy. like if they have the talent CAST THEM. PLEASE. okay. sorry im biased a little because my pookie is the best but yknow.. .also though, im actually so confused on what my director is thinking and i genuinely want to know. he says not to copy the og performers when portraying a character but yet he's going to give the audrey the cheesy blonde wig and is going to make her talk and sing the exact same way? like i understand but also it feels so hypocritical.

legally blonde ; AHHHHHH I wanna do this show so so so bad! i wanna be either enid, elle or paulette!! i think it's perfect for our school because we have a lot of females auditioning and legally blonde has a huge female cast. we have some diversity so it wouldn't be like casting all white girls and it would just be a super fun show to do! idk i feel like it'd be the best choice for us and it wouldn't create much controversy because it doesn't have a lot of problematic moments. also again director if u cast my pookie as emmet pleaseee cast me as elle. we have chemistry (despite 100% not being interested in each other like that). anyways ya this choice is better than music man for our school. PLEASE. also this would be a dream senior year show frfr.

music man (if we don't do legally blonde); okay. i understand our director wants to get more guys into the theater but here's the thing. this school is new. if we want a mostly male cast, it's going to take us a couple more years to build the program to do that. casting this show would probably be fun but also the girls would be fighting for their lives even more than usual to try and get a role. and idk it just feels weird to not use the talent you do have.

little mermaid jr; this feels like a good show for our school. i dont have much to say but i'd be fine performing in this show for my senior year. no critics on this one.

play that i don't know the name of yet; i don't know what it is. so im unable to form an opinion. but i hope it's clue or the play that goes wrong.
