Not what I usually post but I'm not getting quora just to ask this

Mermaiders/Merfolkers, professional or not,

do you know what I could substitute for a finfun monofin that doesn't float and also accommodates large feet? (I literally had to cut holes in my monofin to fit my feet inside and be able to remove them safely)

Something that would fit about a size 10, cheap, and again, DOES NOT FLOAT (I'm not gonna drown trying to swim underwater while my feet float to the surface) would be preferable, but the price isn't that big of an issue I guess, I can save up.

I keep wanting to train underwater but before I can do that I need to not be risking death any more than usual by going in the water.

For my followers seeing this, yes, I am training to be a merman, lol. Surprise?

Real honest question I'd like an answer to. Are Professional mermaids a thing outside of the US? I'm talking about the people who can hold their breath for a really long time and usually perform is aquariums. Is that just a US thing or do other places have them?

Something you can do if you’re trying to write an expert in their field but aren’t an expert yourself is to force them into a situation where they have to be resourceful. You still need to research, but for example in Tell Me How Long, half my characters are marine biologists.

I’m not one myself but I’ve taken marine science classes and consider myself more knowledgeable than average on the subject.

But these biologists have to administer life-saving medication to a sick merperson, in a triage environment where the lead doctor is incredibly limited in the tools at his disposal. From my standpoint as a writer, I don’t have to research exact, professional equipment and procedure that would be present in a proper medical facility and for the layman reader, they won’t get overwhelmed by all the medical jargon (in tools, procedure, and environment) that now doesn’t need to exist.

My characters are on a fishing boat forced to use makeshift equipment that you could buy at a department store, familiar objects that most anyone is reasonably familiar with. The doctor does have his own equipment to a degree, but he can't pack an entire laboratory up in a suitcase.

And, if you set a precedent of the expert going “This is not perfect but it’s what we got and I’m doing my best” instead of “I’m the expert and this is the exact and only way to handle this situation” you get more wiggle room a la “well it’s not great but in these circumstances, I believe it and he gets a pass”.

One of my all-time favorite TV shows is LOST, and in it the protagonist is a spinal surgeon, but also the catch-all doctor as the only one qualified in the group of survivors to do any kind of medical treatment. All he has to work with are whatever supplies they crashed with and tools in the environment. I’m not a spinal surgeon, but it certainly looks legit when you’re watching and when it gets jank, well, he has no other options, it’s gonna be jank.

Still consult how it should be done in your research! A broken bone still needs to be set a specific way, whether you have a proper splint or have to build one out of sticks.

I have to know things like nitrates and nitrites and how those levels impact biological systems. I have to know the mechanics of a reef and how global warming is killing them en masse. I have to know marine biology at its basest level and how a medical professional would prioritize care in an emergency situation. But I don't need to be a marine veterinarain with a degree to write this specific scenario.

I also got some wiggle room because there is no proper documentation for how to treat mythological creatures versus if the plot was about bottlenose dolphins, but I set out to write realistic marine scientists, and that demands on some level knowing what I’m talking about.

Sonny's scowl deepened just a tad more when he saw that the other had taken a particularly annoying pre-emptive security measure. It frustrated him, but begrudgingly recognized that this was essentially a shining example of why camera covers should be used in the first place.

He let out a mildly annoyed "hmph." He was not someone who took the time to ask for things, especially since he knew he'd be denied whatever it was he was seeking anyways.

As the material was shunted from the lens, however, Sonny's disgruntled demeanor made a dramatic shift.

a/n: i wanna kickstart this account with a little scenario i thought up a while back, enjoy ♡

It was a cold summer evening when Azul Ashengrotto decided to go to the surface. He usually spent his time at the very bottom of the ocean riff, and when he wasn't, he made sure he was with either Jade or Floyd — though usually both. And yet, this time around, a tad frustrated by it all, he swam all on his own.

His long tentacles drifted through the water as he swam up to the surface. The dim rays of the setting sun hit his face. It was calm, not a boat in sight. And yet, that rather annoyed him. With a frustrated huff, he started swimming, towards no particular direction. He hoped he'd be able to remember the way home.

After what seemed like centuries, he finally saw another person, despite being far away from land. Their body stuck out like a sore thumb in the blue sea that was meeting with the lilac sky. The way the sun was setting made that person seem almost majestic, the way they admired the stars that were starting to appear.

Azul tended to stay away from others and yet, as if they were a siren, beckoning him closer. He drifted softly through the waters, making small ripples in the deep blue waters. Hearing his little advance, they turned their hair to look at him, making him freeze in his spot.

"Hello," they greeted, with a tiny expression of distrust. "May I help you?"

"Ah, well, uhm-" Azul mentally cursed himself for stuttering, but he couldn't help it. The way their eyes shone under the soft rays of the setting sun, making them stand out, brought such immense heat on his cheeks. Their hair was wet, and he could see the blurry vision of a tail as his eyes trailer downwards. "Good afternoon," he ended up saying, avoiding eye contact.

"Indeed," the person hummed thoughtfully, before he looked back at the stars. "It must be half past eight, no?"

Azul took a second to think, before he responded, "I suppose so?"

That person hummed softly before he turned to Azul. "I know a small cove. Care to come with?"

Azul took a moment to look at them. Surely, he should be getting home, his mother would be worried. However... He wasn't quite ready yet. He merely nodded before he started following them.

The sun had fallen completely when they reached the cove. It was calm, serene, away from the crowds. There didn't seem like there were humans for a good few kilometres. Taking his place on a rock, azul took some of his tentacles out of the sea, covering his torso, almost out of reflex.

"I'm Y/N," the other merperson said, laying their body on a rock across from Azul. "Are you from the Coral Reef?" When Azul nodded, they continued, "Your accent seemed so. I'm from warmer colder sea, further up north."

Azul nodded. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance." His words almost seemed professional, like he was talking to another person he wanted to sign a contract with. His mind wandered at what abilities this gorgeous person could possibly have. A part of him wanted to make a contract for their beauty, but he didn't let his mind wander to those thoughts. "I'm Azul, by the way," he said somewhat rushed.

That person nodded, looking back up at the starlit sky. "I wish I had legs," they said in a small murmur. "It's not easy for me to see the stars daily. Long trip, too tiring."

Azul nodded in understanding, his tentacles lowering themselves to touch the cold waters, his guard also lowering. "Legs aren't all you make them seem."

"You're a cephalopod, you're not used to bones," Y/N said softly, looking back at Azul.

Azul left a dry laugh, smiling at them. "I suppose. But I promise you, living with legs on the daily isn't the bed."

The person tilted their head. "What do you mean?"

"I attend NRC, and since it's a land school..."

Y/N nodded with understanding, smiling softly. "I'm jealous. I attend some school up North, near my hometown."

"Don't you ever feel cold?" Azul asked impulsively, before he mentally cursed himself. His shoulders untensed with relief as he heard Y/N laugh. And gods above, what a beautiful kind of laughter.

"No. In fact, right now it's just the right temperature— you're not too cold, are you?" They approached closer, a concerned streak to their gaze. Reaching towards him, they stretched their hand, before stopping themselves.

"I'm fine," he said with a smile, a genuine one. "Why did you invite me? Not that I'm complaining, however..." He expected a million answers, really. But no the one they were about to say:

"Oh, I, uh," they trailed off for a moment, looking back at the stars. "I thought you were cute."

For a few seconds, it was as if the air had been knocked out of Azul's lungs (?). And yet, he showed a genuine smile, before it evolved into a giggling fit, before a full-on laughter. His cheeks were burning completely, and yet, he was laughing. "Really?" He asked between shaky laughs.

"Hey, don't laugh!" They splashed him with water before they joined in on his laugh.

As their spirits seemed to die down, they smiled softly to one another. Y/N slowly intertwined their tail with one of Azul's tentacles, and their smile turned into a grin as they felt Azul squeeze back.

Meanwhile, Azul freaked out mentally, yet he wasn't going to leave this one opportunity slip away from his fingertips. Pushing away every sign of insecurity, he looked at them and smiled. "I'd love to see you again after tonight," he whispered, his voice charged with emotion.

They nodded softly. "I'd love to, Azul."

Liz would describe Jamil as someone underhanded and cunning, but at the end of the day also admirably ambitious. As much grief and complicated feelings chapter 4 brought her ultimately the genuine fondness she has for Jamil alongside the emotional catharsis his success would bring her is overall much stronger.

Jamil on the other hand would say that Liz is stubborn and an overachiever to a troublesome degree. He says this with mild contempt in his voice to hide his concern for her knack for overcompensating to a detrimental degree pot calling the kettle black.

54. What's something that they don't really care for but tolerate because S/O has an interest?

While Jamil is resourceful with what he has at hand he doesn't much gel with Liz's hobby of DIY crafts, many of which are small renovations and quality of life updates to Ramshackle. The projects themselves are fine but she insists on doing almost completely handmade rather than relying on any sort of magical shortcuts--of which Jamil finds a bit excessive.

This isn't an interest per say but the near over the top reaction Jamil has to bugs makes Liz deadpan lmao. At first she was mildly entertained but it's magic has waned off the more he's been genuinely freaked out. She isn't a bug person by any means (she finds them quite gross) but has silently become a master of discreet bug extermination before Jamil could even fixate on one in the area.

They would be in a stalemate of insisting the other takes the seat (Azul to not feel indebted, Liz because she's a bit biased towards him as a merperson with less use for his legs on land). If the seat hasn't been stolen by someone else by now and depending on the situation it goes one of two ways:

in a more casual setting Liz takes the seat to then teasingly offer that Azul sits on her lap, he reluctantly takes the offer with more insisting and she silently revels in the way he squirms until he gets comfortable

if it's a more serious environment like he's about to meet with someone then Azul gets to have the seat and she takes armrest in a semi professional manner (she looks more like his guard dog than his girlfriend really--)

In the same way that a person would bite someone's head off if someone spoke ill of the sibling they always shit talk about, Liz would not tolerate any baseless insults thrown about Azul (valid criticisms on the other hand--). She proceeds to join in the conversation at first it's inconsequential but the topic veers to talk about the offender and the way Liz addresses them with condescendence in her tone and thinly veiled beratement makes the group awkwardly thins out.

Azul is much more patient with his retaliation willing to let the insult fly in the moment, but he's already scheming on how to trap them in a contract that benefits his business. It's people like that that are easiest to manipulate and if there's bias in how much harsher the punishment is for breach of agreement, well he doesn't have to disclose the reasoning behind that.

Trying to Get Into Mermaiding

Hello, merpeople of tumblr! I want to get into mermaiding, and I have some questions.

A little bit of background first:

I was recently diagnosed with PCOS, and one of its most common symptom combos is easy weight gain + difficulty with weight loss. I want to mitigate this by forming a regular exercise routine, and I think mermaiding would be a fun way to build up strength and stamina.

I'm an experienced swimmer (I've been lifeguarding for 6 years), and I have done occasional mermaiding since I was ~12. I already have a monofin (Fin Fun) and a couple of tail skins (one Fin Fun, one Sun Tail), too. However, I am still very much a beginner mer, especially compared to folks like the ones in the Merpeople documentary.

So here are my questions:

How do I get over some of my preexisting anxiety (worrying about it being "childish," "girly," etc.) about wearing my tail in public?

When my tail skins wear down, where are the best places to find a new one? I'm on a "college student who's too busy to work during the semester" kind of budget, and given the state of student loans in the US, it may be that way for a while.

Is silicone worth it? I know I won't be able to even consider it until I have my first professional job, but will it be good enough to justify once I get to that point?

What are some good out-of-water exercises I can do to keep up my strength during the off-season (or when I simply can't get in the water)?

What are some good, mermaid-ish tops I can wear while I'm swimming in my tail? I know there are tons of gorgeous bikini tops, but that's waaaaay out of my comfort zone. I'm more of a "unisex T-shirt" kind of person.

How can I give myself a more merperson-like vibe when I'm not in the water? There are two major roadblocks in the way of the easiest methods: I like to keep my hair short and accessory-free, and for sensory reasons, I can't wear makeup.

I've seen some amazing mermaid posts here (and on the internet in general), and I hope I can get on your level someday. But for now, I'll just take whatever advice you're willing to offer!

Lighthouse Keeper AU

The Barton brothers always knew they’d end up as fishermen. Very few people ever leave Lantern Bay, with family legacies revolving around the sea and the bounty to be taken from it. Their father was a fisherman just like their grandfather before them. And though the Barton name is not exactly the best legacy, Barney and Clint managed to rise above precedent to run one of the most successful fishing boats in their sleepy coastal town.

Life is good for years.

Yet one day, a storm rolled in. With a friend’s ailing boat still at sea, Barney and Clint argued about whether to go out and try to mount a rescue. In the end, Clint won, and the two brothers set out on a desperate attempt.

Unfortunately, they failed, and nearly paid an awful price.

Washing up on shore the next morning, near dead, Barney and Clint found themselves without the boat they called their livelihood and their home. To make matters worse, Barney’s injuries left him with an uncertainty on whether he could ever walk without pain again. Facing months of and months of possible operations and therapy, Barney struggled with his own future and found that he’d come to fear the ocean he once loved.

Eager to rebuild, Clint attempted to coax Barney back into the only life they knew. But the brothers argued and during a fight the two parted ways.

With few options, Barney ended up taking up residence in the old lighthouse at the edge of town. Determined to fix it up and hopefully one day overcome his fear again. Sitting on a rocky shore with a wood pier and tide pools, the solitude brings loneliness though also a certain peace that comes with being away from pitying eyes.

Barney grown attached to the lighthouse, however. And while the lighthouse isn’t particularly needed, numerous local boats still appreciate that its kept lit and alive.

So while Barney’s pretty sure there’s a ghost living in the lighthouse and he’s fallen down the stairs far more times than he’s willing to admit too, he also finds himself slowly but surely coaxing himself back into the ocean and maybe, maybe someday soon he’ll be brave enough to swim in it once more.

IMPORTANT NOTES

While Harold Barton may not have had the best reputation in town, Clint and Barney do. Clint is still a well respected fisherman and Barney is greeted warmly at the local markets. Everyone knows the two brothers aren’t speaking, and it being a small town of course the rumors are flying.

Though the Bartons are known for their fishing skill, they’re also known for their archery, Barney for his whittling, and Clint for his one-eyed dog.

BONUS: Barney is often checked in on my a good handful of older women whose husbands Barney used to work with or allowed to accompany him and Clint for ‘old times sakes’. They often bring him sweaters as gifts - thick, cable knit ones in jewel tones - or baked goods, or just come by to share a cup of tea, especially after bad storms...

EXTRA BONUS: There are four stray cats that call the lighthouse home. Barney feeds them though they aren’t really pets; only one has dared to come within petting range. They do have names however: Tuna, Salmon (Sal), Minnow, and Mackerel (Mack).

EXTRA EXTRA BONUS: Sometimes Barney will talk to the fishing boats currently out over the old radio in the lighthouse’s upper room. His call sign is Trickshot after his uncanny ability to cast a line in even the most challenging of fishing spots.

idk but the idea of the tweels and azul being able to always grow their teeth back amuses me (i know theyre not sharks but shut up it makes sense to me seeing how dangerous the ocean is so merpeople probs get in a lot of fights either just for fun ((see floyd)) and to survive so maybe they tend to loose a lot of teeth and are able to regrow them back shut up shut up) because imagine if floyd and jade gift you their teeth whenever it falls out because you mentioned once how pretty their teeth look, and maybe gifting something so personal from a merpersons body like scales or teeth hold extra meaning too but they dont bring it up and thats something for another time

♡Now picture Azul learning about this and also wanting in on it, but his teeth are more dull and normal looking especially in his land form. So when he finally comes up to you to gift a perfectly pristine tooth, you can't help but laugh because with how normal his teeth look and how happy and proud he is. It feels and reminds you of a little kid giving their freshly fallen tooth to their parent to give to the Tooth Fairy.

♡Azul starts to feel anxiety sink in as he watches you laugh and try to calm yourself down. Is his tooth not good enough? He's always on top of his dental hygiene, so its pearly white. Maybe it look weird? Misshapen? Is there a chip he didn't notice? Is this a rejection??? As you start to come back down you notice Azul's face is getting redder by the minute, and are quick to assure him you do love the gift. Its just that it reminded you of something back at your home universe. Nothing bad dear! You tell Azul about the Tooth Fairy and explain that after many gifts of sharp teeth, seeing a more normal looking on just threw you off and you weren't making fun of him.

♡Azul is relieved, but also slighty offended. To think him being so nice and benevolent to gift you one of his teeth, from a mer octopus no less, and you compare it to that of a kid's gift??? He scoffs at the cheek, the nerve, the audacity, and the gumption of it all. Still, he is pleased that you at least accept and love it. His curiosity gets the better of him, and he asks some more questions about this Tooth Fairy because... why would a fairy even do or even want childrens teeth for? The idea boggles his mind really. He knows some teeth are more valuable like a sharks tooth, but he can't understand what would small fragile children's teeth be used for. Honestly, you don't even understand it either, does anybody? You just know that parents like to collect their kids teeth, and came up with this story for some reason. You remember your parents doing it for a bit when you were young, and you got some money in exchange for the teeth.

♡Hold on. You got money for giving them teeth? If Azul gives you more teeth, will you give him some money too??? And to think just a moment ago he was offended to being compared to a child, and look at him now. Excited at the thought of being gifted a whole ass dollar for a tooth. You quickly shut down this weird money making scheme he's forming in his head, and tell him most of the time kids only got a single madol from it, its nothing huge. You dont know what the currency conversion rate would be for one dollar to one madol, but you don't bring that up and just assume its close enough.

♡Azul looking disappointed at this is almost enough to make you laugh again, but you resist. He is quick to recover, and go back to his professional persona you're used to seeing. He thanks you for your time, and says it was worth the mild embarrassment to be able to gift you something special and also learn more about your world before hes heading off. You are positive hes still pink in the cheeks, but think he has had enough teasing for today and let him go.

♡Azul back at the lounge retelling the story to an amused Jade, Floyd half listening on the couch. Until Azul mentions the part of getting a gift in exchange for a tooth and shoots right up. Gift???? Koebi chan has never given him a gift for any of the teeth he gave them! Floyd quickly leaves the room ignoring the rest of the story, or the fact the gift was a silly dollar and story was a childrens tale, he is a man on a mission now.

♡The next day you're rushed by Floyd early in the morning. A fresh bloody tooth is pushed into your hand, with a Floyd looking pleased and like he's expecting something. The fact the tooth has blood and is a bit.... wet? Is it from saliva? Did he just loose this tooth? Seriously, did it pop out seconds before you got there??? You question him what tf happened. Floyd may or may not have pulled a tooth out himself just to get a gift from you. He just tells you he fell down or something, whatever. It's fine! Just give him his gift already!

♡The two of you stand there staring at each other for a few minutes. How did it come to this. You are guessing that Azul shared the Tooth Fairy story to the twins. You don't think Floyd would be really happy to receive a madol, especially with how hes looking at you so you shove your hands into your coat pockets looking for something decent to give. Luckily you find some of the lollipops Sam gave you as a little extra from when you bought some snacks from his store the other day, perfect. You give him the lollipop, and thank him for tooth as you place it in your pocket. You'll have to wash this and the coat later. You pray that the blood comes out after all that time.

♡Thankfully, Floyd seems pleased with the gift. He quickly shoves it into his mouth, thanking you before running off to god knows where. Disaster avoided, you won't be getting the 'I'm now sad so I'm gonna squeeze you until I feel better' squeeze today. You hope that this isn't the start of a bad habit, and head off to class yourself.

♡Until you round a corner and spot Jade walking towards you with a certain look in his eyes. Hands holding something out for you to take. You're gonna have to start buying more lollipops for these two.

if ashengrotto!(name) and electric met very early on as kids, electric would totally stun everyone who tries to bully ashengrotto!(name). even if it were bigger fish, electric eels are top predators after all.

did you know that apparently, the highest voltage an electric eel has released is about 860v, and 1 amp? that's enough to kill a human being 😭 everyone just stays away from ashengrotto!(name) and electric unless they want a visit to the merhospital, except for a few who are close to them (like the leech twins and azul)

it would be funny for people feeling intimidated by the leech twins, when the actual person they should be scared of is electric (who just seems so outgoing while looking tall and stronk)

al-asim!(name) and kingscholar!(name) 🤝 their efforts being overlooked by others.

I reread the black sheep post and the idea just popped up into my head. al-asim!(name)'s efforts were always overshadowed by their SIBLINGS. kingscholar!(name)'s efforts were also overshadowed by their SIBLINGS. so why not pair the two??

i feel like al-asim!(name) would be more like jamil rather than kalim considering the way they were raised. it would be surprising for the other students- like there's kalim who's so outgoing and overall sunshine, then there's al-asim!(name) who's just awkwardly standing next to their brother, a strained smile to save some face.

kingscholar!(name) and al-asim!(name) would maybe meet if they were paired together in a school project. the goals in their mind was just to get it over with already, until they unexpectedly click and get along from their similarities!

at first, it would be a bit awkward, kingscholar!(name) obviously seeing through the half assed facade of al-asim!(name), until some event happens- and maybe they aren't so different after all.

they have emotional deep talks in the most random moments ever, and somehow, the peace they bring each other just helps heal in some way.

LMAO I am not prepared for shroud!(name). having to deal with the daily stuff of being compared to ortho??? I haven't done book 6 yet, so I might be a bit lost in here

shroud!(name) would probably do whatever it takes to stay away from idia, so just imagine when they end up in the same dorm??? bro would either be a menace to idia, or just disappear from their life.

if they ever become a menace, they'd purposely put him in social situations, knowing what to do because they did grow up with idia, observing him all these years.
