Between the two of them Mal had always been shier. Had always avoided contact and people. And so as that transferred into their adult lives Alina more often then not found herself taking care of him.

It wasn't horrible she supposed, being with her childhood friend. Being beside him as he grew more and more, slowly but surely coming out of his shell. Allowing her to fade into the background, away from the light of interaction.

Alina guessed you could say that after a while she became more shy then Mal was. But that was how life was, and besides it was better for her- she was a mapmaker, best for her to be able to fade into the background.

It was fine because she had Mal by her side. Having him made everything that much easier, because it meant that she wasn't alone and that was all she needed.
