annihilation is soooo good because the biologist is aware that she is an unreliable narrator and also hates it. she WANTS to be completely impartial and objective and just observe everything without influencing any of it. but she cant so instead she omits her name from the entire book to the point where it's almost absurd and completely intentional and splits her journal into "objective" chapters detailing her expedition and "subjective" chapters detailing her memories about her husband. ill never be over you biologist
#annihilation is my favorite book in the series for this exact reason#i like acceptance a lot too#but authority doesnt hit quite as hard as the other 2 bc it has a more traditional narration style#southern reach trilogy#annihilation

I can not believe that Jason Grace has wormed his way into becoming ✨The Boy✨ when 90% of what I remember him doing canonically was get concussed and be confused
#pjo hoo toa#Jason Grace#Literally my favorite character is Leo#But I just feel a strong emotional connection to jason. He’s my blorbo#heroes of olympus#percy jackon and the olympians#Rick did him dirty canonically#Jason is such a normie#And he thinks he’s a rebel when he’s literally authority#he’s so stupid i love him#I feel like only real reason people compare him to percy is because he’s a protagonist and a son of Jupiter/Zeus#*percy jackson voice* and EVERYONE’S a son of Zeus 🤡#But he and Percy are not the same at all#Literally if he was a son of the roman equivalent of hermes i bet people would love his character potential#He and Leo could’ve been the bestest besties of all time canonically#Too bad he doesn’t interact with people in the seven (that aren’t piper) as much as he does with her#i’ll shut up now

#i saw someone talking about how they had copies of the same book in multiple languages and i was like.... why tho#like i get collecting multiple language editions of a favorite of yours#but this was presented as specifically for reading in other languages#idk am i the odd one out here?#i will not read anything translated Into Japanese#the way i look at it is that i learn languages to get a deeper understanding of the author's original intent#but as of right now theres still a little bit of a language barrier#translation is already a type of barrier between you and the original work#so why would i want to be twice removed from what the author is saying#languages#langblr#studyblr#language learning#benkyou posting#polls#memes#studyinspo#polyglot#the only reason i can see myself reading a book translated into japanese is if i really want to read it but japanese is the only#available language i know#but even then#i always have so many books to read that it really wouldnt make a difference if i either a. read it or not#or b. waited for it to be translated into english#i do know that im weird about translations though

This now happens to be one my favorite passages about Apollo:
However, the Megarians later dedicated a golden plectrum to the god, paying attention, as it seems, to Scythinus, who so speaks about the lyre: (the lyre) "which the beautiful-faced Apollo, son of Zeus, harmoniously tunes up, connecting the beginning and the end, and the light of the sun he uses as a shining plectrum."
- Plutarch, On The Pythian Oracles (C1st to C2nd A.D) quoting Scythinus (C5th to C4th B.C) (trans. Andrei Lebedev)
#Apollo#if anyone is interested#this is about the cosmic nature of Apollo's music/lyre#there are many reasons given by greco-roman authors on why Apollo was considered the sun god#and my favorite one has to be this#that Apollo harmonises the heavens just the way the sun harmonises the world#also Scythinus describes time as first and last of all things and that's what apollo is bringing together when he tunes his lyre#the intersection of Apollo's solar and musical nature my beloved#anyway I'll stop infodumping here#and maybe make a separate post talking about this in a bit more detail

The urge to fill the ToA tag of Ao3 with fics sharing similar tropes and characterization as the HoO fics I read in 2016 on fanfiction.net grows stronger every day.
#we have so much good ToA fic I think it’s time for some absolutely trashy ToA fic to balance it out#I’m talking miscommunication for no reason#time travel for no reason#cheating??? for no reason??#authors who completely hate one character so they bash them the whole fic#characters watching other characters memories and everyone crying about it#(I’m pretty sure there is a ToA fic of that but it’s actually good so it doesn’t count(#CONFRONTATION SCENES WHERE THE SAD CHARACTER GETS TO BE LIKE “now you know what my life is really like#and everyone else goes “we’re so sorry … we had no idea you suffered this much… we’re horrible friends…”#can you tell Leo was my favorite character before Apollo#trials of apollo#sunny speaks#heroes of Olympus

People are debating what the "romantasy" genre is because apparently "a romance centric plot in a fantasy setting" isn't romantasy that's something else
#girlbob.txt#if romance plot fantasy isnt that genre then ig the genre is poorly written ya fantasy books with smut scenes for an adult audience.#i actually think romance authors setting themselves loose in fantasy settings is kind of epic#i mean thats like half of fanfic lbr#but like romance subplots in fantasy books are really hit or miss#mainly cause its not what the reader is there for and the author may not be a romance writer#(see one of my least favorite parts of eragon being the het nonsense)#but if everyones on the same page (ha) of this is a romance that's got good potential#but i keep seeing videos and other discussions about what doesnt count for the genre according to some people#and its like. if you keep excluding books that should qualify but dont for xyz arbitrary reasons#ill look at what is advertised as the genre and come to a conclusion

how it feels to fight the urge to anonymously remake cause ive once again amassed way too many followers.
#annoying considering i remade just back in march.#also cause im like. balls deep back into my favorite book series and i cant post about it on here for a trillion different reasons#not only do i wanna gatekeep it because its EXTREMELY fucking niche. but also the fandom is so small and close knit#that if i started talking about certain....things....id for sure have my reputation destroyed#and i cant have that cause i run the damn official server for it. endorsed by the author himself and shit#captain's log

Had an opportunity to talk about my goal to read The Anatomy of Melancholy in 2025 with my best friend's brother & his girlfriend. She's a literature teacher, so she recognized it and seemed really impressed by the goal. She's was like "Wow! Isn't it like 1500 pages? That's a really good goal for the year, please keep me updated on your progress!" and when I got really serious and said "I'm GOING to read it entirely. It's my White Whale." she laughed & started clapping & nodding at me.
#txt#she said she's never read it bc it's “far too long”#& she said “I don't read nonfiction very often bc you always have to do research alongside it#& that feels too much like homework for me to enjoy it.”#to which I said “That's exactly why I LIKE reading nonfiction.”#Not only is that exactly why I like reading nonfiction but it's also my reason for reading most fiction too#I love heavily referential fiction that I have to do a lot of research into understanding#it's why some of my favorite books are The Divine Comedy & The Name of the Rose#& House of Leaves though you don't really have to do MUCH research to understand that one. it's just a fun side project#it's also why I'm (still) reading Homestuck. I guess I just love self-imposed homework.#I love doing a lot of research & taking notes & “basically doing homework” when it's something I choose to do for myself#Nonfiction is actually much easier than heavily referential fiction#because nonfiction at least cites its sources. All of the research materials are right there already you just have to browse them & their#authenticity. Heavily referential fiction usually makes you hunt for its sources esp. if the author hasn't explicitly clarified them#she seemed like completely fascinated & sympathetic when I was explaining all this to her which I liked.#People often treat me like I'm crazy or miserable when I talk about this.

#diana wynne jones#howl's moving castle#Sir Not Appearing In This Poll#my DWJ posts#I'm not picking fights with that other DWJ poll I just have opinions apparently#and those opinions include “the genuinely best and most genius of DWJ's books are her standalone novels and that's that on THAT”#genuinely I don't think this poll will get nearly as much traction as the other one because Howl's Moving Castle is not involved and#look I love HMC as much as anyone else but there is a reason that DWJ is one of my favorite authors and HMC is absolutely not that reason#my personal favorite is Time of the Ghost though Fire & Hemlock and Black Maria are in close contention#but also I'll point at almost any of her standalone books and be like “this is also brilliant and here is why!” so yeah I dunno#I can often do the same for her series novels but her standalones tend to be genius in far stranger and unexpected ways and#and those strange unexpected brilliances tend to also be the exact reasons why DWJ is one of my favorite authors I guess

I’ll never forget how insecure Stansa’s got when the Key Five was revealed, complained about it and then to cope they created the ‘Core Six’ and actually ties into their continuous stream of passing of fanon as canon and at the same time being the usual delusional bunch they’ve always been
What's really funny is that they still confidently claim that the Key Five doesn't mean anything, solely because she isn't a part of it. The Core Six is a completely fanon invention but people talk about it like it's fact. They want her to be more important than she is so badly that they're straight up ignoring the author. And yes, until otherwise stated by George, the Key Five are still a thing. Tbh I'm not sure if there was ever a time that they engaged with the source material though? A lot of them came from the show (*cough*fanfiction) so that's where a majority of their takes are coming from. That's why we get people saying things like "Sansa charmed George off the page" or "Sansa took Arya's place as George's favorite Stark sister". They just desperately want the show to match up with the books. What's annoying is that her not being a part of the Key Five doesn't mean she isn't important, but people take it as hate towards her. It's sad that the only version of her they like is her fanon one.
#ask#anon#key five#anti sansa stans#the way people think they can just decide who the main characters are is insane#if the author himself is telling you /here are my main characters/ then maybe idk he considers those his main characters#also the fact that they're his favorite and he's constantly talking about how important they are but who cares about that?#we all know fanon is more important 🤪#/it's unfair/ to say she isn't a key five even though they belittle Arya and Dany like they get paid for it#rip to people who think Sansa replaced Arya as grrms favorite stark sister cause he loves that little girl 😭#he constantly says it has her in every book has a novella's worth of chapters for her in braavos has her connected to multiple plotlines...#she's the princess of the key five for a reason

Alright, wordcount of the current "Love will cost you an arm and a leg" chapter (only including the "finished, I don't need to edit this" part) is 5,700+ words.
That's not including the second half of this chapter.
#i talk#fic talk#I'm gonna DIE bro#/j#Actually part 2 is the reason I wrote this entire fic to begin with so it's fine#I finished the giant hurdle that was holding me back (part one) so things should be easier now#*KNOCKS ON WOOD*#I've got a lot of part 2 already written out#it's always just a matter of sewing all the pieces together and seeing where I can add things#or see if anything is missing#I just have this one part from part one I need to wrap up then part one is DONE#but the hardest part is already over#part 2 is way more lighthearted and good god am I ready to move on to part 2#I don't like writing the Happy Pills arc. As good of an arc as it was#I delved into some aspects I didn't intend to and like. It makes for a better story but it took a lot out of me#Anyway I know some people do 10k+ chapters but that's not my vibe#I average 5000 - 7000 words per chapter because that's what feels right#I'm only now realizing what will (likely) be my favorite part is immediately following my least-favorite part#*drags hands down face*#I write for myself but I do hope people enjoy / appreciate the chapter#I'm the type of person who thrives on feedback and rereads comments constantly#though I suppose most authors do

if you dont mind sharing, what are some of your favorite ska songs/bands?
I will admit I am not a huge band person I tend to be more of a "pick whatever random songs sound good" person, so I can't recommend any good bands. I also listen to Ska Punk, which is a subgenre of Ska... and Punk. So I am not a good authority on Ska songs to listen to I am just someone who is banned from being passed the aux cord...
But some of my favorite songs include:
No Children - Ska (cover)
Quinto Patio Ska
Everything Went Numb
S F D D
And songs by Reel Big Fish tbh. I know I just said I don't listen to specific bands but Reel Big Fish has some pretty good songs like...
Sell Out
And their Take on Me cover
Here's my disclaimer, though: I am not into music subcultures I just listen to whatever sounds good (and jazzy punk with horns sounds good), so I could be giving absolutely awful music recommendations that anyone who is especially into Ska (and more specifically Ska Punk) might find egregious. I personally just grab whatever song sounds good and add them to my forever long playlist.
Also the Jabberjaw (Running Underwater) song from Pain used for the Cartoon Network Boomerang Groovies is probably the reason I enjoy Ska punk so much, and it has been in my playlist for years now:
If nothing else in this list interests you, I require everyone by law to listen to Jabberjaw Running Under Water by pain and watch the Cartoon Network Boomerang Groovie video of it. I used to watch Boomerang a million times, and this was probably the only Groovie I really enjoyed watching and didn't go to the bathroom during.
#im very embarassed about being open with my music tastes because I feel like a poser 100% of the time#but im not really claiming to be a part of any music subcultures im moreso just someone who likes what I like#and is banned from using bluetooth or the aux in the car#so im owning it#here's some songs I listen to that are ska (specifically ska punk)#and if someone who is more knowledgeable on the topic and is a part of the subculture wants to add on please do#and if you trash on me for my music tastes that is fair#half of my songs on my playlist are indie songs of debatable quality ya know?? so im not the best music authority#i like my punk songs with horns ya know??#i need some brass in there#trust me my number 1 song on spotify was Lucky Ducks from the Bobs Burgers movie#and my number 2 song was the instrumental version of Lucky Ducks from the Bobs Burgers movie#and no other bobs burgers songs#so I am NOT the person to ask for music recommendations#I once annoyed my family by adding europop to the roadtrip playlist#I have the entire Cats broadway cast recording on CD and my 3 favorite songs on my main playlist#am I talking myself down because I am not confident in myself and scared of judgement from others for my music choices? yes#but also I am speaking from experience that no one lets me touch the aux cord for a REASON
