Concept Character Art- "Linus Baker & Arthur Parnassus" Been wanting to draw the characters from one of my favorite books, "The House in the Cerulean Sea" by TJ Klune for some time now! Starting with Linus and Arthur!

the proposal scene WRECKS me. Cerulean Dads i love you. also it’s so great how Arthur flaunts his ring every chance he gets. no one will forget that he is in love and married to Linus Baker! i wish Linus got his own ring though :(

One of my favorite things about Somewhere Beyond the Sea was how was Sal has grown and become more comfortable since the beginning of the first book. I mean, this kid who rarely spoke up about anything, and NEVER around Linus, is now the one the kids almost always trust to speak up for them.
And more importantly, he calls out the adults for dumb things they're saying or doing SEVERAL times throughout this book. It says so much about Arthur, Linus, and Zoe and the way they raise these kids that he's comfortable doing that. It makes my heart so happy to see him have a place where he's that comfortable in his own skin, and I love the adults in his life for giving him enough respect and room to flourish for that to happen. It shows in all of the kids, but I think Sal especially.

There should be a movie of the house in the cerulean sea. I feel very strongly that David Tennant and Michael Sheen should play Arthur and Linus respectively. And Pearl Mackie should play Zoe. Yes, I know that the book is American, so casting British people doesn't make sense but I do what I want.

“You silly, delightful man. There is nothing to be sorry for. You fought for us.” - Arthur, THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA by TJ Klune
Here is my contribution to Our Favorite Scene Zine latest edition, which compiled over 20 artists’ interpretations of the reunion scene from THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA. This book was my first inroad to TJ’s staggering body of work, and remains one of my comfort books at times when my faith in humanity is challenged, or when parenting two smarty-pants gets particularly hard. 😅 From the outset, I wanted to focus on the kids’ reactions to Arthur and Linus’s reunion, because love is something that children inherit from their grownups, and that joy multiplies as they grow up in safe and accepting spaces. I hope you like how it came out. 💕

"I'm sorry," Linus whispered into Arthur's throat, never wanting this moment to end
Arthur held him tighter. "You silly, delightful man. There is nothing to be sorry for. You fought for us. I could never be angry with you for that.
How I cherish you."
Linus felt his heart settle in his chest.
I love them so much, their dynamics and chemistry are everything ⭐️

one thing about tj klune he’s going to create a socially awkward little guy who doesn’t quite know how to respond to literally any situation that they’ve been put in and i am going to eat it up every time!!! because heck if that is not me!!!!

I love characters that are Lawful Good in a negative way. When a character is so keen on following the rules that it actually becomes a hindrance and they can’t see how the rules are faulty or the system is corrupt or how breaking a certain rule could benefit everybody. They can’t do it. It’s not in their nature to see the world outside of the black and white mentality. And then i love seeing these characters slowly learn how to see the world in shades of grey.

Without a second thought, Linus reached up and cupped Arthur’s face. His skin was hot, but Linus wasn’t afraid of being singed and blackened. Arthur would never allow it. The fire tickled against the backs of his hands. “There, there,” Linus said quietly. “That’s enough of that, I think. You’ve made your point quite well.”  - The House in the Cerulean Sea
I love a good desperate face grab - some excellent face holding in this book!

Arthur and Linus go swing dancing for pride!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arthur would absolutely have a small collection of rainbow socks, and I couldn’t get the image of trans wing tipped shoes out of my head. I think Linus could be persuaded into a pair of rainbow suspenders. He probably wouldn’t get any more colorful than that but it’s fun to think about how he’d experiment with personal style. they are so in love.
happy pride (even though it’s almost over) !!!!

Linus Baker disliked himself and had a depressing view of life but Arthur and the children still fell in love with him and I absolutely love that bc it crushes the idea that you have to first love yourself or be healed in some way before other people can love you.
