My favorite arthurian tv shows and minisiers (part 1/2)
(My favorite movies here)
More details under cut. Some of these I love, some are so bad so good, some are beautifully epic, some are just funny.
The Adventures of Sir Galahad: Short one season tv show (15 episodes) about Galahad having to recover Excalibur after it was stolen. Also the one and only show where Galahad and Mordred interact.
The Adventures of Sir Lancelot: 30 episodes of self contained light and sometimes comedic adventures focusing on Lancelot living at Camelot. Still very much enjoyable today! Other characters who appear are Merlin, Arthur and Guinevere.
Arthur of the Britons: The first attempt to make a tv show focusing on Celts and a Celtic Arthur. Episodes are self contained. Kind of strange sometimes, and the only arthurian characters are Arthur, Kay and Ector.
The Legend of King Arthur: An 8 episodes BBC show which adapts Malory. This is the best arthurian tv show ever created! It also has an amazing Morgan and a stellar Mordred. Actually made me cry!
Entaku no Kishi Monogatari Moero Asa: Toei original anime (no manga) of 30 episodes that follow Arthur's journey to reclaim Camelot after it was conquered by a villain.
The Boy Merlin: Very short 6 episodes series about Merlin as a kid discovering his powers. It was very light and with an historical aesthetic.
Merlin: Two episodes miniseries, extremely popular! It follows Merlin from his childhood to the death of Arthur. While it is not my favorite, it has some great scenes in the second part where Guinevere, Mordred and Lancelot are introduced.
The Mists of Avalon: Miniseries adaptation of a novel I really dislike - but I love this miniseries. It might actually be one of my favorite arthurian series. It focuses on Morgana and her relationship with Arthur and Guinevere. It also has an amazing Mordred and Morgause, one of the rare times where we see Morgause.

people don’t talk about hilda (from the netflix show) enough and how absolutely insane she is. and by that i mean how she takes the Traditional Hero trope to the absolute extremes. she is filled with overwhelming whimsy; adventure is drawn to her like a goddamn magnet and absolutely NO ONE can stop her from pursuing it. and if they even try to get in her way then fuck them. this kid’s normal tuesday means possibly dying multiple times and fighting The Horrors. everyone around her is concerned for her and the unstoppable magical girl powers that she wields but she absolutely WILL be a little shit about it because she was pulled from her whimsical littol cottage in the woods where she played with trolls and forced to move to fucking Normal Non-Magic Town. turns out going to Normal Town is only a minor setback and soon she’s back on the befriending magical creatures (a GIANT TALKING RAVEN) grind. she’s so Magical Girl Protagonist that even her own mother is terrified for her.
put simply: hilda subverts the magical girl trope in such a way that makes her a threat to normal society. and i love her for that

I like to think that pre-Oracle Rachel painted scenes from both wars, but she and Percy have no idea until they go back and reflect.
Percy notices, cause Rachel shows him her art, but he just rights it off as weird, even tho something doesn’t feel right.
Like, that’s DEFINITELY a replica Achilles mourning Patroclus. Only it’s two girls, one with flowing hair and a melted face, the other kneeling over her friend, face stricken with grief. He thinks her eyes look familiar. An immortal stands over them. Although they remind more of Ares and less of Thetis.
She has another painting that reminds Percy of a story from the Gigantomachy. Hera cowers under Porphyrion, about to be attacked. Only instead of Zeus and Heracles coming to her aid, it’s a guy with blond hair. His armor and sword is distinctively NOT Greek, but he opts to not comment on it. Rachel did a good job.
There’s more in her little studio, they both dismiss them as dreams. They make Rachel uncomfortable and Percy feels bile rise the more he looks.
He doesn’t realize until months later. It hits him while on the Argo. Him, Jason, Clarisse. THEY were the heroes in those paintings. Jason was the one coming to Hera’s aid. Clarisse was mourning Selina. He was fighting giants.
It all clicked into place, and he tried to remember what else her paintings for-told.

My favorite arthurian tv shows and minisiers (part 2/2)
(My favorite movies here)
More details under cut. Some of these I love, some are so bad so good, some are beautifully epic, some are just funny.
Kaamelott: French long running series about Arthur and his court. It started with very short comedic episodes and slowly stated to get into more serious events still keeping a comedic tone. More on how to start watching (for English speakers) here.
Merlin (BBC): Okay, this might have filled me with frustration many times, and it might be annoying (for me) in the way some stories were adapted (Morgana going evil, Guinevere and Lancelot) but I still love the first season and I enjoyed the fifth season a lot. Plus, Guinevere in Merlin BBC is probably one of my favorite Guinevere ever created, I just adore her. Not to mention that this show has take arthuriana from tv movies and turned into something marketable again, giving rise to a bunch of movies.
Camelot (Starz): Oh boy, so much potential and so good. Everything but Arthur and Guinevere, for me, is perfect. Literally delightful. The settings are beautiful, the story of Merlin and Igraine actually made me shed a tear, Kay is adorable, Gawain had the potential of being the first queer Gawain ever (I could feel it!), and Morgana was absolutely perfect. I truly believe that if they had cut Guinevere's story, and changed the actor playing Arthur this could have been our long arthurian tv show.
The Librarians: An extremely fun show with a Galahad living in modern times and working with the Librarians. While the arthurian elements are not a lot (there is Morgana, Galahad and some Lancelot), the show is still enjoyable for the self-contained adventures it offers.
Trollhunters / Tales of Arcadia: This animated series is not really an arthurian one, but it does have Merlin, Morgana and Arthur as main characters in the third season, which takes a more arthurian setting (it is called Wizards). I really enjoyed the backstory of Morgana, and in general even the first two seasons are quite fun for what they are.
Fate/Apocrypha: I admit I am not a fan of the Fate universe, mainly because it confuses me, but seeing Mordred in the flesh? I loved them. This one season anime does not have a lot of arthurian backstory for Mordred, but the show still manages to keep some of the angst and for me it was enough.
Arthur et les enfants de la Table Ronde: Probably my favorite animated arthurian show ever. The story is for kids, but it still manages to throw in some interesting twist, in particular related to Uther's cruelty/harshness and Morgana's actions. It follows a kid Arthur who is an orphan living in Uther's kingdom and going to adventures with Sagramore, Guinevre, Gawain, Morgana etc. It also has one of the few Morgause out there!
Cursed: Okay, hear me out! Is this show good? Not in my opinion. Is it fun? Yes, I actually enjoyed it. The Merlin and Nimue duo was an interesting take, Arthur's story was developing to be really good, Morgana as a lesbian? Yes, please. It was messy, but it managed to pull together even a final battle and give us some surprising moments so this is one of those shows I will probably feel like rewatching in the future (and buying the dvd if they sell it).
