My favorite arthurian tv shows and minisiers (part 1/2)
(My favorite movies here)
More details under cut. Some of these I love, some are so bad so good, some are beautifully epic, some are just funny.
The Adventures of Sir Galahad: Short one season tv show (15 episodes) about Galahad having to recover Excalibur after it was stolen. Also the one and only show where Galahad and Mordred interact.
The Adventures of Sir Lancelot: 30 episodes of self contained light and sometimes comedic adventures focusing on Lancelot living at Camelot. Still very much enjoyable today! Other characters who appear are Merlin, Arthur and Guinevere.
Arthur of the Britons: The first attempt to make a tv show focusing on Celts and a Celtic Arthur. Episodes are self contained. Kind of strange sometimes, and the only arthurian characters are Arthur, Kay and Ector.
The Legend of King Arthur: An 8 episodes BBC show which adapts Malory. This is the best arthurian tv show ever created! It also has an amazing Morgan and a stellar Mordred. Actually made me cry!
Entaku no Kishi Monogatari Moero Asa: Toei original anime (no manga) of 30 episodes that follow Arthur's journey to reclaim Camelot after it was conquered by a villain.
The Boy Merlin: Very short 6 episodes series about Merlin as a kid discovering his powers. It was very light and with an historical aesthetic.
Merlin: Two episodes miniseries, extremely popular! It follows Merlin from his childhood to the death of Arthur. While it is not my favorite, it has some great scenes in the second part where Guinevere, Mordred and Lancelot are introduced.
The Mists of Avalon: Miniseries adaptation of a novel I really dislike - but I love this miniseries. It might actually be one of my favorite arthurian series. It focuses on Morgana and her relationship with Arthur and Guinevere. It also has an amazing Mordred and Morgause, one of the rare times where we see Morgause.

I was trying to find a William Russell post to share for @vintagesffantasyactors poll but couldn't find quite what I wanted.
While I don't think he has an actual chance against Anthony Head, he at least deserves a decent thirst post (for my mother's sake if no one else's), so enjoy these vintage goodies:

Plus he's Alfie Enoch's dad!

William Russell Enoch (November 19, 1924 – June 3, 2024) Film, stage and television actor who performed as both Russell Enoch and William Russell. His career on stage and screen spanned over seven decades and he first achieved prominence in the title role of the television series The Adventures of Sir Lancelot (1956–1957). In 1963, he was in the original lead cast of BBC1's Doctor Who, playing the role of schoolteacher Ian Chesterton from the show's first episode until 1965.
On television, he appeared as Ted Sullivan in Coronation Street in 1992. In his later years, he continued his association with Doctor Who and returned as Ian for a 2022 cameo in "The Power of the Doctor", 57 years after the character left, which won him a Guinness World Record for the longest gap between TV appearances.
Russell's big break was the title role in The Adventures of Sir Lancelot on ITV in 1956, which for sale to the American NBC network became the first UK television series to be shot in colour. He acted in many plays and TV series including Disraeli, Testament of Youth and Coronation Street (as Ted Sullivan, the short-lived second husband of Rita Sullivan). He had a small part in an episode of The Black Adder, as a late replacement for Wilfrid Brambell, who became impatient with delays to his scene and left the set before shooting it. He was the Duke of Gloucester in the Robin of Sherwood episode, "The Pretender", and Lanscombe in a 2005 Agatha Christie's Poirot episode, "After the Funeral". (Wikipedia)

The old 50s tv show The Adventures of Sir Lancelot was a lot of fun, and it was very interesting how they dealt with censorship. Lancelot and Guinevere weren’t having an affair (as far as we saw) but they still had a courtly knight-and-lady setup. Mordred was Arthur’s cousin, not his son (this one has historical precedent; Monmouth and Tennyson had him as just a nephew.) I don’t know if there were censorship rules about magic or if they just didn’t want to be labeled a fantasy show, but Merlin was a Da Vinci type who put on a bit of a Great and Powerful Oz act but was truly a brilliant scientist.
My favorite, though was Tristan and Isolde. King Mark was a villain in one episode, and at the end, Isolde asked if Arthur and his knights could take her away to Camelot so she wouldn’t have to live with the guy. “Certainly!” said Arthur. “Tristan, would you escort Queen Isolde?” And then a knight steps up to take her hand, and they give each other a look like Hello there, things are about to happen as soon as the cameras stop rolling!

some people watch baking shows and critique people’s baking based solely on how the winners do it, i watch shows about arthurian legends and critique people’s sword form based solely on how the protagonists do it
