I've been thinking about fukuzawa a lot recently and now that I'm rereading the manga I'm falling in love with him all over again. fukuzawa just... trusts his people with things. it's an integral part of who he is, and this is shown right from the very beginning of the story, when he lets dazai decide what to do with atsushi after his entrance exam.

leaving a decision such as whether to let a new person join the ada or not to one of his agents is perfectly in line with fukuzawa's character – dazai is the person who picked up atsushi from the street, so of course he gets to decide.

but is it as obvious to dazai? how does it make him feel, after years working in an organization where to trust is to be foolish, where the boss lets or makes people do things? how does it feel to be trusted with no hidden agenda, no secret test to be passed? dazai has been with the agency for a while by this point, but it's the first time he's bringing a potential new member to the team (because he's an orphan and he's at the ada to save the weak, protect the orphans, we know) and fukuzawa lets him handle the entire thing, not doubting his judgement once, not second-guessing dazai's intentions with this.

Do you think Ranpo and Fukuzawa ever had a "You're not my dad!" moment when Ranpo was a still a teen?

Do you think they both just stood there shell shocked as the unspoken part of their relationship, the parent and child bond they share, was brought to light and spoken out loud? And immediately denied.

Fukuzawa never intended to replace Ranpo's father, he never meant to be a parental figure, but he can't deny that part of himself that thinks of Ranpo as his. That saw the lost, naive and desperate boy and felt compelled to gather him close and protect him. The part of him that wants to provide for and nurture Ranpo, not just out of responsibility but out of fondness. The secret feeling he has when he wakes up to Ranpo's noise and excitement, which yes does still tire him to no end, but also has him thinking "Thank God, I found him."

And Ranpo doesn't think of Fukuzawa as his dad per se, he's his boss, mentor, his provider. The man who took the time to understand him, who broke through his wall of isolation and gave him a place to belong when he had nowhere left to go. But he's more than that too, because Fukuzawa didn't just give him a home, Fukuzawa is his home. He doesn't know what he'd do if he lost Fukuzawa and that same admiration and love he felt for his parents is there for him too.

Do you think, Ranpo in with all his powers of observation saw the pain Fukuzawa couldn't hide in the short seconds after and felt the floor go from beneath him?

Do you think it was yet another moment of Ranpo clinging to Fukuzawa, sobbing and begging that he's sorry because he thinks he's about to lose his family again?

He won't though. Unlike the first time, where Fukuzawa had yet to understand their bond and froze, Fukuzawa holds onto Ranpo just as tight and tells his child everything's going to be alright.

He is aware of his fault at empathy, so a partner to help him learn is a great influence. He’s a bit selfish with snacks, so if they hate sweets it’s okay! More for him. Another must is a good relationship with Fukuzawa. He needs his father figures approval of a lover. It would also be great for him to be with someone with a calmer energy. He is a lot, so he would like a partner who can tell him when to cool it down. In a more domestic style, he likes the type who enjoys staying in. Cuddles in bed, dinner at a table, the sappy stuff he likes.

Warm and cozy, a comfortable presence to be around. I don’t mean especially motherly or nurturing, but more a sense of self and maturity that has an understanding and sympathy. Someone who MUST be able to deal with the danger of his life without being too afraid. Also, someone that can have fun. Chuuya is a child at heart, and needs someone to have fun with. Watching silly romance movies, trying recipes online just to end up with flour all over his face. He wants a partner to laugh with.

Card Meanings in the new, The Day I Picked Up Dazai art.

Ok so im currently still in shock that were getting new day I picked up dazai content so bare with me, but onece again Asagiri has included playing cards in his art so of course I have to break down what they mean.

Lets start with side A (the right side):

First we see a joker:

While Gogol is the obvious fit for the joker, the card also describes Dazai extremely well. He is almost always acting like the fool in any given situation, even in the mafia he loved to be as weird and funny as he could as well as tease and annoy the people around him, something jesters famously did.

In fact, his dynamic with Mori is very close to how a king and a jester used to work, where the jester was the only person who was allowed to openly mock the king and would usually heckle him. They also played a key part in psychological warfare, which we see Dazai specialises in.

I think the whole; wit, intelligence and unpredictability kind of speaks for itself.

Next card is the four of spades:

This one is also really fitting, it shows how after the day I picked up Dazai side A, Dazai settles into his little routine of going to bar lupin with Oda as well as how he finally has someone who he can trust and be comfortable around. Finally, it is a clear message of optimism, something Dazai never shows before he meets Oda.

Next the two of hearts:

This one is pretty obvious, it's Dazai and Oda spending time at bar lupin. It actually fits so well, there's not much I can say about it other then how it shows the love and care Dazai and Oda had for each other (platonically)

Now for Side B (prepare to cry)

The first card is the three of spades:

Whyyyyyyyyyy... why Asagiri. This one is also fairly obvious but it has multiple meanings. It most clearly represents Dazai suffering in side B as he has to run the mafia without odasaku and live in utter loneliness while destroying all the connections he never got to have for the sake of a friend he never got to meet.

“It was hard,” muttered the young man. “It was really hard fighting Mimic without you in the organization. I had no choice but to take over for Mori and make enemies of everyone around me to expand the business. Everything I did was for this world’s—”

It also represents the moment on the platform where he nearly tells Odasaku the truth and goes with him to bar lupin, the horrible decision to abandon everything for Odas future

The next card is... the ace of spades:

The ace of spade has many meanings, most of which involve change or transition, but by far its most famous meaning it death. I really don't think I have to explain this one, Beast Dazai having the card of death has a pretty clear meaning.

But the ace of spade does have a secondary meaning, and this one is a little more hopeful, as it shows Dazai passing the safety of this world onto Atsushi and Auktagawa.

Finally, (it's a bit hard to see) we have the ten of diamonds:

I want to focus mostly on the highlighted part because it's what really applies to BEAST Dazai, he lived his whole life to create a world where what matters most to him, that Oda gets to be happy and write his books, becomes real. This card doesn't apply to Dazai directly, more to the fact that he made succeeding in his mission his only priority and discarded everything else.

Bonus round Odasku card; the king of clubs

the only card thats seen on Oda's section and one that clearly represents Odasaku as a character.

"King of clubs represents a dark man, who is loyal and kind. He is a good businessman, shrewd with money and investments, but isn’t selfish. In fact, the King of clubs is a very devoted father, husband and citizen. In a broader sense, the King of clubs encompasses idealized qualities of a fatherly figure. This card is universally considered as a very good omen."

I feel like this sums Odasaku up very well, the devoted father and loyal friend parts are just him to a t.

I have been flattered into trying to gather my own scattered thoughts, but firstly I just have to say this is SO well put?? They absolutely do have this sort of back and forth kind of parallel, don't they? An adult who tries his best to live up to his ideals and almost gets crushed to pulp when they seem to fail him versus a kid who tries her best to live up to someone else's ideals and kind of comes from them already having failed and almost crushed her.

I also love your points about the two helping each other, how perhaps they seen in the other a sort of....failure(?) or disappointment but learn that even though they find the other annoying, it doesn't make them less admirable (funny enough, I think Aya learned that faster than Kunikida, who hasn't really learned it yet xD).

I guess my points have more to do with....hmmm...Kunikida and Aya's father a sort of parallel with Dazai and Fyodor, to put it one way.

Please correct me if I'm misremembering but Kunikida seems all too aware of how people can fail his ideals (the poor man's partner is Dazai, I mean). So instead of imposing his ideals on others, he imposes them on himself and yet still values the lives of the people around him. Kinda like how Dazai values the humanness - even if they're technically less brainy than he is - of others even though he feels like he can never really mesh with them.

On the flip side, you have Aya's father, who imposes his ideals on other people (Aya and her sister and probably their mother) and kind of looks down on them when they fail to match his standards. Like Fyodor and his god-complex feeling he's above everyone else.

And then we have Aya who is stuck literally right in between them. Someone who is a victim of someone else's ideals. Which is to say she's just like Kunikida because he's a victim of his own ideals, but she's also kind of a victim of someone whom Kunikida could be (I think I saw something saying Entrance Exam showed how dangerously similar Blue Apostle and Kuni were, and my anime recollection says the same). So I don't know...I think like you said they could help each other so much. Aya realising that MAYBE ideals aren't so bad after all and Kunikida realising perhaps realising that he and Aya are both victim to ideals (even though the context is drastically different, I will say. And I don't think Kunikida will ever give up on his ideals...but between Dazai, Aya, and the way everything's kinda crushing him in the current arc, a perspective shift to lighten his load would be cool to see).

Also, final random point without transition. I absolutely love Aya's lines about a living person being unable to match the perfection of the dead because it reminded me of Dazai and Odasaku, just a bit...

Aya's father is all about an ideal woman and creating the ideal female.

Kunikida has an ideal woman in mind.

If it is not too much trouble, may I please request a Yandere? Platonic! BSD x Arlecchino! Reader, let's say that the reader has played an important role in almost everybody's life.

For example, she took Kouyou under her wing when she failed to escape the Mafia, advised and convinced Fukuzawa to save Yosano, treated and viewed (15) Dazai as only a child and not the demon prodigy, never once used or placed Chuuya as the second choice, etc. Things like that, but the reader is still in the Fatui and does run the House of the Hearth and looks after orphans while also training them to be enlisted in the Fatui. So, they probably view reader as a parent figure and someone dear to their hearts and don’t want anything bad to happen to them.

It's not a coincidence. To take one for an example. KOUYOU, that poor little girl who did nothing wrong. She was such a sweet kid, someone nice ... and yet she was there in the Port Mafia. Taken away and unable to live her life like a child should.

In an attempt to leave the mafia with a man she liked, it was rather unfornature enough – both were caught red handed.

And that man? He was killed.

KOUYOU was desperately holding on, wanting him to open his eyes, to survive and still find a way. And yet deep down, she knew that it would be impossible.

Good things never last.

She began to see the light as something meaningless. That the moment a flower born in darkness is exposed to light, it will wilt and burn away to nothingness. She can't escape. Not anymore. But that also wishful thinking.

That was until you came along and helped her up.

It was like a moment's heartbeat, the moment she looked up. You were right there – holding your hand out.

Even if you weren't expressive as to be expected out of sympathy for what happened, she can tell that you were no ill-intentioned person. So what did she do? She took it. Your hand. And gave you a smile ... one that faintly shined of hope.

Of course, she never left the mafia. But she had you to take care of her ... and treat her like a true daughter.

She was ecstatic to have family of her own.

You even gifted her a little plushie. Of course, of the the most fine and exquisite type of material. Your rich ass is flexing without even saying it out loud. slay

And you never treated her as a second choice.

Just like CHUUYA. As the time passed, he too joined the Port Mafia by boss orders. Honestly – you probably didn't give much of a shit, but that obviously changed.

Even now, your fatherish figure still remains after years. And that may as well never change.

He takes some great pride on his abilities, and he's rather smug about it himself. Although – sometimes he does question himself, and his humanity. Due to basically being merged and being Arahabaki's vessel.

But no, fuck that. You treated him as your own child, and although had more better things to do in the Fatui – this kid was insecure as hell and needed a parental figure.

CHUUYA adores you from the bottom of his heart. You showed him what it was to be human. To be alive. You gave him good reason and even let him visit the orphanage you looked after. Since he was merged with basically a God, you found it curious as well.

Well Arahabaki doesn't have a Gnosis so he's luckily safe

And then also, boom. Your attention extended towards his partner! DAZAI himself, of his young age. And from that time on, you already knew something was up with him.

Honestly – it can't be doubted. He was destined to live in the darkness forever. Nothing in the world can compel that deep etched loneliness in his heart; and even his late friend ODASAKU had acknowledged that.

Even after their unfortunate deaths, you were right there.

He was almost weirded the fuck out at first. You're not treating him like a monster. Or a demon. Not even his position and affiliation. You straight out threw those ourt the trash and instead? You treated him like your son.

It comforted him a little. To know he finally had someone to call his own. At first – just like anyone, he thought he'd lose you.

But you proved him wrong in various ways.

No matter how hard he tried, you kept him his side. Trained with him and succeeded in his defeat (much to his surprise), and gave him a few fatherly hugs and gifts that he would need and like. And DAZAI couldn't help it either.

He wanted you to be his real father quite badly. You were always there, and his eternal loneliness?

What's that again?

No. Even with that in mind, you never stopped to pursue and keep going with the mafioso. You'd go as much as to take him and meet with the rest of the harbingers, maybe taking CHUUYA and other executives from time to time.

Of course, avoiding The Doctor because it might as well just give back DAZAI his trauma.

And when he keft the mafia? You came along with him. Words cannot express how happy and relieved he was. He didn't want to loose his only comfort, his family. And if any9ne ever tries to threaten your familial bond?

He's gonna pull out the fucking demon prodigy card and show them how demonic he can be

In any case, same is due to everyone else. Like the fact you just always seemed to be there in the right place, at the right time. Like when YOSANO was being forced into healing soldier after soldier in the war.

The poor girl. Safe to assume the Fatui didn't really care about such and didn't participate in the war.

Much unless the Tsaritsa commands them to stop it, they may as well do that. But as of now they didn't really care. But that was only an 11 year old child ...

A child. You just had to take her in, didn't you?

And if not – in any case, you went ahead and got FUKUZAWA to save her. You reasoned with him, quite the good convincer yourself. You were a woman of a hundred, if not a thousand faces that could easily fool others.

So he took her in to the agency.

Although YOSANO was never told about what had happened in the sidelines, the moment she saw you walking away from the both of them – she just had that feeling.

She wants to thank you, if it's the last thing she did.

From the time that came on, you continued to do what you did and appeared, woving yourself into the hearts of everyone. At first, it was obviously never easy. But that wasn't a reason to give up. And you're you, would you seriously give up from that?

Many of them expresses gratitude in multiple ways, sometimes a bit unhinged – which you were yourself. There's not a sane bone in your body.

At least, that's what people like to think.

You've come this far into giving others a new life, being a father figure that everyone cherishes dearly and adores. Oh, and if anyone try to tear away that dream or hurt you – even a single scratch on that body of yours ...

There will be hell to pay.

You'd think they got very protective of their father. They can all quite collectively agree that they need no other familial figure in their lives other than you. Dearest you, who saved them from their shameful lives and gave them a future.

Even one who isn't supposedly a kid like SIGMA – he came from a book. He doesn't have a family. But correction, he does.

And it's you.

Or anyone else from multiple affiliations across. The Decay of the Angels, the Hunting Dogs, supposedly those that caught your eye in these several factions.

Suppose the easily jealous ones of seeing you paying attention to kids more in the orphanage, or giving a certain triplets more of time can get them boiling with anger quite enough. Even if it was wrong, it just seemed so right.

And so? They try to steal more of your attention away. This is one of the time they truly act like children once more.

CHUUYA would most likely not want anyone even gazing at your direction. Must they make things worse? You're around kids almost 24/7 and taking care of them yes, but you should only be taking care of him!

DAZAI acts like a child throwing a tantrum. No! No! No one can be with his father other than himself! How dare those kids call you their father?! He's livid, and tries to hide his anger and jealousy, yet he was visibly so eerie and tense.

KOUYOU can bet it was saddening to see you paying attention to work at the Fatui. Come on now, can you blame her? If you took her under your wing, you better be responsible. So she tries to invite you to her own missions and do fun together, just like when she was little. She wants your care.

YOSANO can tolerate it mostly, although at some point she comes with a breaking point as well. She's normally kind and likes hang around you and feel protected and loved, but oh, when you're not looking? Let's see ... pulls out chainsaw

So if a child or two goes missing in the orphanage?

Let's just say it wasn't anyone's fault, dear father :)

1- aya. oh my gosh aya. shes what, a ten year old?????? and in the span of a day, she has found out about a vampire lord who is responsible for destroying or saving the whole world, shouldered the responsibility of getting said vampire lord away from the enemy to save the world, developed a father-daughter relationship with said vampire lord, sacrificed herself and got saved by him, believed that the world could be saved now, saw her new father figure's body be torn apart and replaced by a greasy ratass who wants to destroy everything or whatever, with said new father's last words telling her to run to save herself, being saved by said father, then having him dissolve and die again in front of her eyes again. shes a ten year old. what the actual fuck. oh and don't forget, she doesn't know that she lost her other father figure too!

gosh she is going to be SO traumatised and even that is an understatement i really hope she has the strength to recover

2- so akutagawa is back huh? about time, about time (though im not very happy about the cost it took- but atleast he's back?)and he has agreed to protect aya on brams wish? thats surprising honestly, so im wondering if the stuff atsushi told him while fighting him at the airport or whatever affected his subconscious or something so that he consciously wants to start protecting people?

OR maybe! he sees a bit of himself in aya or smth? i mean look i dont exactly remember what happened before he met dazai and was taken in by him okay, dont come at me. but maybe he sees that terrified little kid and something stirs in him or smth anyways go akutagawa go you're her third father figure please dont die again ‼️

just- THINK ABOUT EVERYONE. think about atsushi and tanizaki. who saw him disappear slowly in front of their eyes, to buy them time. think about fukuzawa. who wished for kunikida to be the next president because he was the most ideal. who cares so much, even if he doesnt show it as much. think about aya. she has such a deep bond with kunikida, and now she'll have to face the devastating news that one of the only people who truly believed in her is gone too. think about ranpo and yosano.

think about dazai. who is much too far away to do anything right now, who miscalculated once which led to him being too far to stop fyodors rampage in any way. who was truly doing all this because he wanted to keep the detective agency safe. who, when he realises what will happen next, his first thought is to warn them. who was his new partner, kept him alive, even made him a part of his schedules. who i think he must have to care for, even a little bit.

dazai, who thinks that anything worth wanting is always lost the moment he obtains it. and its happened again. and by the looks of it, it will happen again.

i genuinely want to know how he'll react but i dont want to at the same time. gods i cant fucking do this man
