Status Quo: Changing Genres

Ok, so I've been reviewing my story structure and categorising my scenes by importance/plot impact. To no one’s shock, a lot of my book is centred around character development and love, leading to the pacing being more akin to a romance. I can restructure, cut some scenes (don't worry, I'll post them for you) and make it more of a sci-fi with a romance side plot, or I can keep it romantically leaning, obviously still following the cult/oppression/eugenics conflict.

SYNOPSIS:

Also Hei Lian is adorably chubby. Look at that smile. It sure would be a shame if anything happened to him on his quest to live a peaceful life.

Spooky Book of the Week: Fantasy Farm

Author: Xī Zǐxù (西子绪) / ซีจื่อซวี่ (thai)

Genre: horror, supernatural, slice of life, danmei

Rating: T for the Nile (not just a river in Egypt)

My Synopsis: Man who moves back to his home village and discovers that nothing around him is normal thinks that he is, in fact, normal. Lol. Lmao even.

My Review: If the other spooky month recs have been a tad bit too spooky, this might be the novel for you! A lot of the plots lean heavily into the supernatural without the scare factor (lowkey starts to feel like a Studio Ghibli movie in the latter 2/3rds of the novel). But before I get too deep into this: this novel is heavy on the slice-of-life, as in it does not feel like much is driving the plot further other than "MC lives his life." It's not bad (I am obviously reccing it, lol) but if you're looking for adventure and consistent plot movement, then this one may not be for you. In a way, it kind of reminds me of the anime Mushi-shi (if you've never seen it, check it out!) where some episodes are horror, some episodes are chill, but the whole show is just about humans dealing with the inconvenience of living beside the supernatural. On another note, if you are someone easily tempted by depictions of food, this novel will either make you very happy or very angry. Almost every chapter discusses a new Chinese dish, and the translators were oh so very kind enough to include pictures of each one at the very end. One even started adding the recipes at the end. All in all, I really enjoyed the slow pace of this despite how frustrating Lu Qingjiu's ironclad self-restraint and lack of curiosity made me. (I mean c'mon dude, you can't be in a horror novel and then not explore the horror! You can't have a sense of self preservation and respect of personal boundaries when mystery is afoot! Do you not know what genre you're in?!) Can't wait for the cookbook to drop!

When she was 10, she left with Ethan, her brother, to go to royal training in their respective kingdoms. She became the military leader and Queen of the Syren Queendom, Azura. Her brother went on to become King of the Dustborn kingdom, the Laurel Valley.

She resents Florentine and Zephyre for killing her sister. In fact, about three years after Seraphina's passing, she declared war on Amalraum. The only reason this war didn't come into fruition was because Kaimana asked her oh so nicely.

She is currently single.

Her most precious item is a black opal seraphina found for her when they were kids. Ethan set it into her Signet ring.

She was born on May 16th.

She's always losing her trident, she's a vegetarian, and she loves listening to classical music, whale songs, opera, and some death metal(but only Scandinavian and Indian).

Her deepest fears are harpoons, drowning, and losing the people closest to her.

Blatant Self-Promotion: Lord of the Black Mountain

Nemar Joris, necromancer and Lord Warden of the Assembly of Five Cities agrees to a marriage alliance with Teren Kelfin, the princess of the Kingdom of Sewen. Unfortunately, she doesn't want to be wedded to him. Her twin brother makes a risky attempt to save his sister from marrying a pagan by disguising himself as Teren and assassinating the necromancer on his wedding night.

This does not go well for him for the following reasons:

1. Joris is immortal and can't be killed.

2. Joris informs his would-be assassin that he intends to honor the marriage alliance's terms and conditions. Caris finds himself in the awkward predicament of confronting his biases.

This will lead Caris on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual questioning (and a whole heck of a lot of confusion).

Meanwhile, Teren is extremely haunted. Literally.

Putting myself out there!

Hello good people! My name is Maxwell Alabaster and I am an aspiring author. Above is a link to my Wattpad where I am posting my WIP Rituals and Red Tape. It's a little pet project that I would like to share with people! I would best describe the work as a Slice of life/Dark Fantasy with elements of cosmic horror and dark comedy.

I currently have 7 chapters published on this Wattpad (I have many more on here as the first draft copy so if unhinged first drafts are your thing take a peek!).

I'm a hobby writer so uploads are slow going but I want to aim to publish at least something (here or there, WIP or one-off) once a month. Also words of wisdom are appreciated, I know I have room to grow!
