VIOLENCE JACK: EVIL TOWN (1988)
Rod Serling steps into view, looking just a little more rundown than usual. "Picture of a man," he starts, "a man so violent they named him Violence Jack. Now, picture if you will, a town so vile they named it Hell Town. A subterranean town of debauchery and dastardly deeds. A town that would go on to inspire an OVA so evil it would take on the moniker of... EVIL TOWN."
He takes one final drag of his cigarette, sighing deeply. "That's the signpost you see up ahead. The signpost that signals your entry into… 1988's VIOLENCE JACK: EVIL TOWN." Thinking the crew is no longer rolling film or sound, Serling spikes his smokes on the floor. "This thing is just vile, repulsive even. This Go Nagai fella, well, he's just a nasty little freak!"
In the world of post-apocalyptic media, you have everything from shows and movies about zombies to funky little Italian dune buggies. Dwindling resources. Familial bonds put to the test along endless stretches of barren asphalt. And then you have one of the best sub-genres: Inexplicably Big Dudes. Like Fist of the North Star, Go Nagai's Violence Jack manga fits right into that mold. Unlike Kenshiro and co., though, Jack is willing to explore every dirty little nook and cranny of what our bleak future has to offer.
Folks, it ain't pretty.
Deep in the depths of the appropriately named Evil Town, a small group of survivors crack open a wall to find the colossal Violence Jack just kind of standing there. Apparently he's been standing inside this wall for six months? When they let him out he's just kind of like, "thanks." From there we transition into a battle between Evil Town's A, B and C Zones, each with their own unique brand of denizens, with Jack ultimately playing a pivotal role in who lives and who gets torn to shreds.
At first Jack partners up with the Zone A folks, promising to help them take on the slice of beef known as Mad Saurus, who hails from the extra loathsome B Zone. Before long, though, he finds himself teaming up with the women of C Zone, who are almost all fashion models—with a couple wrestlers thrown in for good measure—since they were heading to a fashion show in Kyoto when disaster struck. How convenient! Jack is tasked with protecting them from the brutes and rapists of both A and B Zones, so either way you slice it this is destined to culminate in a Big Dude versus Big Dude Beefdown.
Over the course of roughly one hour, kids die horrible deaths, women are savaged in the most unpleasant of ways, there's cannibalism, necrophilia; basically nothing is off limits in the world of Violence Jack, more so here than anywhere else. It's all fairly reprehensible… and the animators at Studio 88 went obscenely hard on it! Director Ichiro Itano—yes, he of the famed style of action sequence that came to be known as the "Itano Circus," featuring incredibly stylized aerial combat and missile volleys—made sure his animators put all their blood, sweat and tears into the blood, sweat and tears on screen. Everything from the extremely gross depictions of sexual assault to Jack's expert knife play, which usually ends up splitting heads in half or sending punks into a somersault of guts, is depicted with the kind of love and care one might put into a sentimental Mother's Day card.
So yes, VIOLENCE JACK: EVIL TOWN is pretty nasty, and I'm worried I'll be put on a watch list if I don't add that caveat. It still hits just as hard now as it did over 30 years ago, though, shocks and all. If this is our future I'm good with checking out now... but if for a quick, tasteless glimpse. A peek, if you will, into the mind of Go Nagai, who is etched into history as one of the pillars of the manga and anime industries and, as good old Rod Serling famously put it above, a "nasty little freak."

The Voyage So Far: Thriller Bark
east blue (1 | 2) || alabasta (1 | 2) || skypiea || water 7 || enies lobby || thriller bark || paramount war (1 | 2) || fishman island || punk hazard || dressrosa (1 | 2) || whole cake island || wano (1 | 2)
the tone of thriller bark is super fun- the combination of horror and comedy is done really well, and i like how it’s set at the very start, with the introduction of a seemingly terrifying situation and character (brook and his ghost ship) that are very quickly revealed to be anything but.
i also like that we hear singing and see music notes before we ever even see brook. we’re associating our musician with music before we even know him.
brook’s recruitment is delightful, and so very luffy. of course he would want a talking skeleton musician on his crew, and of course he wouldn’t be fazed by brook in the slightest except to think he’s cool. i love him a lot.
for the most part, thriller bark isn’t actually scary despite its horror theming- but it does get some good moments in, and of them, i think the reveal of cindry’s room is definitely the best. it’s not scary, necessarily, but it’s deeply creepy, and only becomes more so when you learn why it’s like that and what exactly hogback did.
i love how team-based thriller bark feels. especially immediately following water 7/enies lobby (in which two crewmates leave and the crew has to deal with a ton of internal strife) and preceding sabaody (where the crew gets separated), it’s just so nice. it’s most obvious in the team fight versus oars (and i’ll get to that later because i LOVE it), but also in smaller moments like robin and franky’s team fight against the spider zombie.
the team just feels so cohesive in thriller bark, and it’s really good. robin and franky are the two newest crewmates, but they already trust each other enough to pull off some fantastic teamwork.
usopp is really good in thriller bark. he also has the best outfit in this entire arc.
my two favorite fights in this arc are usopp versus perona and zoro versus ryuuma, for very different reasons.
zoro’s fight with ryuuma is fantastically cool, and i really like the level of respect and understanding that seems to exist between them. you have an ancient samurai and a modern samurai, separated by several hundred years, dueling it out to the best of their abilities- it’s really just awesome.
usopp’s fight with perona is very different, because they’re both people who hate fighting directly and will avoid it whenever possible. their fight is a mess of diversions and distractions that makes usopp’s moments of courage and triumph, like sticking his hand into a bear’s mouth, not to mention his ultimate victory, all the more satisfying.
i just really like seeing usopp grow and accomplish things!!
i’m aware there’s an argument to be made that the character we meet in this arc isn’t really ryuuma, because ryuuma is 1) dead and 2) possessed by brook’s shadow, but it isn’t going to stop me from saying ryuuma is awesome.
the clouds of fire he’s frequently shown with are also gorgeous, and definitely evocative of the style oda will later use to draw wano, which is a very cool touch.
everything about cindry makes me so, so sad.
i’d also argue that the fact that she overcomes hogback’s conditioning by finally expressing emotion, first by crying and then by smiling, is the first manifestation of the same thread we’ll later see with koala and the slaves of the celestial dragons. one piece says over and over again that there is no point where someone stops being human, no matter how much agency they’re robbed of.
i just think nami giving her attempted rapist several thousand volts to the face is very very sexy of her
like i mentioned, the crew against oars is such a HIGHLIGHT of this arc. i think it’s one of the only times we actually see the entire crew focused on a singular opponent (the only other case i can think of is the pacifista and then kuma at sabaody), and it’s just so much fun to see.
i also appreciate that the strawhats carry the first half of this fight without needing luffy to be there. he might be their captain and the linchpin of the crew, but they’re still a crew when he’s not around, and still very capable of working together without him.
this is just still one of my favorite gags.
continuing re: the team fight against oars, the final sequence where the entire crew coordinates for one final attack, some of them working to incapacitate oars and others to weaken him and other to position him just right for luffy’s final blow to paralyze him- that’s the GOOD SHIT.
i don’t know that there’s much i can say about zoro’s confrontation with kuma that hasn’t already been said, so all i’ll say is that zoro’s loyalty to luffy is absolutely staggering, and hits me in the chest every time i so much as think about it.
zoro has the second “luffy’s going to be pirate king” moment, i believe, after usopp in alabasta, and definitely one of the most memorable.
there’s something about luffy on top of brook’s piano that always delights me. i think this is their dynamic in a picture: brook playing music, and luffy listening, and talking, and cheering him up.
there’s something about the ending of thriller bark that really hits, in a way not really shared by other arcs. there’s a certain finality to it, a swan song. i think it was sarc opbackgrounds who pointed out that unlike most other character flashbacks, which come at the middle of the arc to add extra weight before the climax, brook’s comes at the end. the battle’s already finished, and now it’s time for him to close out the last fifty years and bid farewell to his old crew before setting sail for a new dream.
it’s really nice. this is how the rumbar pirates get to go out: singing and dancing, after the battle’s already won, as their last survivor finally gets pick his hopes and dreams back up again and set out to sea once more.
it’s not a panel, really, but i feel like i have to include binks no sake in here. for one, it’s a really good song and sticks in my head like glue whenever i so much as see the lyrics. second of all, it’s the pin that holds this ending together, the shared point between the past and the present. the rumbar pirates sing it for their final performance and they sang it for laboon years before; brook sings it alone to himself on his ship, lost in the fog; and the strawhats celebrate and dance and sing it at the tops of their lungs.
i’m a sucker for a good musical throughline, but i think this is probably the first time i’ve ever seen it done well in a fucking text-based medium.
i’m happy for him :’)
i LOVE the new crewmember toasts so much. look at them!! look how happy they all are!!

[deep, deep, deep, deep, sigh]
Mmmmmmkay. Not sure this is going to be a popular post. In fact, probably going to be pretty darn unpopular (making the bold assumption that anyone will see it and/or care). But I want to talk about the PROBLEMS in the Tales of Arcadia writing.
Now, Tales of Arcadia has some diddly darn good writing. I like it. A lot. And most of it is fantastic and beautiful and makes me cry. All of the character arcs are 👌. Buuuuuuuuuuut as a whole, as a multi-show story, I do find issues with the plot.
Honestly, first off, I'm not going to bring 3below into this because 3below is a bit disconnected from the rest of the series. Maybe that will change Rise of Titans, but in general, the protagonists and conflict in 3below doesn’t really intersect much with Trollhunters and Wizards. Sure, it’s in the same world, and the characters interact, but the 3below plot is only minimally connected to the Trollhunters plot, and aside from Wizards picking up where 3below left off and Krel showing up and helping with the Hisirdoux’s Eternal Time Trap, the two shows don’t intersect at all, so. Moving on.
First of all, Trollhunters. Morgana, specifically. I have... issues... with the ending. I really, really, really felt like Jim and Gunmar kind of got sidelined for Claire and Morgana respectively. Now, is this issue biased by my dislike of Claire in general? Oh, definitely, I’m not going to deny that it factors in quite a bit. But even that aside, we’re given this protagonist, Jim, and they spend 3 seasons building up this big scary troll villain named Gunmar, and how there’s going to be this invasion/eternal night thingamabob where Jim’s gonna have to face off against Gunmar and-- PSYCH! Gunmar goes out like a little punk and we flip over to the universal story constant of “if there are two girls on the battlefield, they absolutely must find each other and fight.” And okay, Morgana was built up, too. She was, it’s not like they threw her in last minute. But she was built up as the MASTERMIND, as a puppeteer in the shadows, and I don’t know, it just sort of felt like she kind of lost her place in the story and became just another endgame boss. And I 100% absolutely DESPISE the fact that Jim got sidelined for Claire. Angor Rot coming in and holding Morgana? Fantastic. Superb. Again, the character arcs in this show are great. And Jim even stabbed Morgana! It was a great fight! The protagonist overcame harrowing ordeals, stabbed the-- oh, wait. Nope. She’s not dead. Now, let’s just knock Jim out cold (albeit in a very in-character way, taking the hit for his friends) and hand the reins over to Claire, who finishes her off. And I just [sighs again] it felt a little forced? Especially since in Wizards, we re-hashed the exact same thing and just made Morgana turn good instead of killing her. I felt like Morgana was rushed in as a villain when more time should have been taken, especially if they were just going to resurrect her and do it all over in Wizards. The pacing could have been better, that’s what I’m saying.
Speaking of Wizards and Morgana. Let’s talk about Wizards and Morgana. Again, it felt like they just re-hashed the ending of Trollhunters into Wizards and changed up the ending. Now, I have no problem with Claire fighting Morgana IN GENERAL. It’s cool. However, that being said, in Trollhunters, Morgana was built up to be a puppeteer character, then became the main villain that was just a cool final boss, like I already said. And since we brought the whole fight back up in Wizards, I feel like a better alternative would have been to yes have Claire fight Morgana in Trollhunters! But for that to be the side fight and the main fight to be the fight we were originally promised of Gunmar vs. Jim. For Gunmar to get beaten in something a little more epic than “One down, one more to go!” and then for Morgana, locked in her fight with Claire and seeing that the battle is being lost, slip away into the shadows and live to fight another day. Leaves a bit of intrigue, and keeps her initially-established role as a voice in the shadows intact. Granted, this does raise problems later in Wizards as to what zombie Arthur wants and why the Arcane Order would need to destroy the amulet, but I’m sure they could find a way around it, like that Morgana’s power was severely weakened by creating the eternal night and they were unleashing more power. Instead of “Hey, I liked being dead, it was quiet” it could be more of a “without my powers, I realized the error of my ways.” There are ways to fix the issue, is all I’m saying. Plus, to leave Morgana as an unsolved, living mystery would make it even more of a big deal to see her in the past in Wizards-- instead of Claire being “Grrrrrr, Morgana, that person I killed once!” it would be “Grrrrrr, Morgana, that person who’s still at large and we never managed to defeat!” Just makes more sense for you to be mad at an enemy you have unfinished business with than one you already defeated pretty soundly.
[Deep inhale]
Okay, let’s talk about the large, stone, elephant in the room. Troll Jim and his transformation back. Pure, honest, unadulterated opinion, right off the bat? Felt like a cop-out. Now, I have to sit here and constantly remind myself “It’s a kid’s show, it’s a kid’s show, remember that it’s a kid’s show,” but I’m sorry, I like my permanent things to be a little more permanent. I liked the fact that the Airbenders remained extinct in Avatar and we didn’t [gasp!] discover more! during the show (that changed in Legend of Korra obviously, but we’re not going to get into my feelings on that). It felt a bit cheap when there was a secret colony of living Alteans in Voltron. I know, I know, it’s a kids’ show, sometimes you like a happy ending, especially when the kids’ show is Wizards and ends up getting incredibly dark (what with the amulet getting destroyed, Merlin dying, the whole Beast-Jim thing, THE PROTAGONIST STRAIGHT UP DYING, all of the emotional/psychological darkness of the Arthur and Morgana arc) through the course of it! Yay, little bit of feel-good, Jim’s not a troll anymore. That being said, again. We got told that troll Jim was PERMANENT. There was no way out of it. Apparently Claire didn’t find a way to change that through whatever gap there was between Trollhunters and Wizards. And then it got fixed, by, uhhhhhhhhh, oh. They didn’t explain what exactly fixed it. Besides I guess the [heavy sigh] *low grumbling* power of love. Felt like a cop-out, and it felt like it cheapened Jim’s sacrifice at the ending of Trollhunters for it to just *poof* fix! at the end through the power of Claire’s love. Now, granted, Jim went through the absolute wringer of first turning into a great big monster and then getting turned to stone, so sure, give the boy a break and some therapy but it still felt like a cop-out.
Okay, all this to say. I ranted for like, three paragraphs about... two issues. I COMPLIMENTED parts of the writing WHILE I WAS BASHING OTHER PARTS. That is pretty dang good, guys. Yes, I have a whole essay on why there is a PROBLEM in this WRITING, but seeing as I could only find TWO THINGS that I had a problem with? That’s some pretty solid writing. Granted, they were two pretty big things that I had essays on, and that’s not great. But hey, two big plot issues versus a multitude of plot holes? Hot dang. Not bad. So, yeah, the character arcs are all fantastically carried out, and the plots in general are sound with the Sporks seal of approval on everything but two points. Thanks for reading through, I know it was long. Feel free to tell me exactly why I’m wrong about this being bad writing. I’d love to see someone else’s opinion and/or someone making me feel better about these issues that I have.

WHAT’S GOOD, PARTY PEOPLE ? the name’s mads : twenty - four summers young, in love with cj from dawn of the dead (2004), mortal enemies with amc’s the walking dead and so very excited to be here. thus, without further ado, below the cut you’ll find the basics—the general gist—about my horrible, poorly written bastard children.
trigger warnings for : cancer, death, kidnapping, abuse and assault !!
APOLSKIS, JULIAN — twenty-four, comic store clerk.
BASICS : born in seattle, julian moved to fort elms when he was a whooping eleven years old. why, you don’t ask. well, because he got diagnosed with a gnarly case osteosarcoma and his father took ONE LOOK at that hospital bill and vanished into thin air, that’s why ! so, mommy dearest took her kids and skipped town as well. for less horrible reasons, of course. since then, his cancer has came and went and came back again. until finally it went for the last time, taking his leg with it as it did. he’s cancer free now ! three years and counting. we do love that for him … depressing facts aside, he’s in a punk rock band because we gotta Stick It To The Man. they suck but he’s decent on the drums and that’s all that matters. him. yeah, he’s a bit of a prick. a lovable prick. loves to play the devil’s advocate and hates talking about his feelings because ~ romantic trauma ~. but other than that, a decent guy, alright ! put some respect to his name.
WANTED CONNECTIONS …
ex - girlfriend : bringer of trauma … she was his second ever girlfriend and their relationship was good, okay ! lasted almost two years. and then, without warning, she dumped him, THROUGH A NOTE. left without a word and that was that. a big bitch move, i’d say.
mother : the best mom there is ! worked three jobs to support her family after the deadbeat left, and is overall the best person juli knows and will ever know. she’s a second generation polish immigrant and very insistent on julian retaining his jewish heritage. pops was christian, so … gross.
father : not much to say about this bastard except he hasn’t spoken to his own children in thirteen years. not as much as a birthday card ! who knows where he is now. we’d like for him to be dead in a ditch but odds are he has a new family. i’d love for julian to knock him out, please hit me up for that.
hospital buddies : like i said, he spent most of his childhood in a hospital. so he must’ve made at least one friend there. they can be a teenager, they can be a senior citizen — as long as their friendship was thrust onto julian by sheer proximity and boredom. he’s obviously well now but i’d like for him to have a sliver of his past life close.
DIMEO, BRANDON — thirty-five, mall cop.
BASICS : very italian. a walking italian stereotype, really. his family is huge and he’s close with them all. too close. i’m talking yearly hunting trips, weekly family dinners, and a mother who still does his laundry. which means, yes, he’s a momma’s boy. a bit of a scrub, if you will. flopped out of the police academy in his early twenties, as he’d almost done high school, and settled for acting cop at the local mall. he’s a bit of a dumbass, and by a bit i mean a lot. unintelligent to the point where he can’t do basic math. emotionally unintelligent to the point where he can’t have a long - term relationship. we do love that. also a big fan of the charlie’s angels television series, AS HE SHOULD BE. he’d be an angel of charlie’s if he could be …
WANTED CONNECTIONS …
ex - girlfriend : i’m talking first and only. probably didn’t get together until his mid - late twenties, and didn’t last that long either. probably had issues with his weird relationship with his mother, probably didn’t appreciate that he couldn’t clean his own house, probably wanted a man and not a little boy. she definitely dumped him. oh, well.
family : he has A LOT. two parents ( i was gonna say obvi but is it obvi, i don’t think so. check yourself @ me ) and three brothers … but he’s the baby of the family, physically and mentally. i feel for his mother. i’d love for him to have a kid cousin, though. like one girl ( except his mommy ) he treats well. it’d be cute, shut up.
friends with benefits : pretty self - explanatory. no strings attached, no commitment, no expectations … it’s all poor donnie here can muster in life. so do give it to him, please and thank.
broskis : he needs friends ! who aren’t other mall cops ( sorry egg take it up with HR ) … maybe dudes he’s known since high school, his OG home - boys. either to enable his antics or to call him out on his shit. i’ll take anything for brodawg over here.
KINNEY, SAWYER — twenty-two, vet student.
BASICS : god’s favorite. just kidding … i don’t think her love for him is much reciprocated. first dropped off as an infant @ the local church’s doorstep, then adopted. all is well ! no, her adoptive parents die in a car crash thirteen years later. she was there, too. sole survivor … even her baby brother passing away in the accident. shit’s tough, my dudes. she still has her older siblings, but who cares about them. was diagnosed with epilepsy shortly after ( she hates it, thanks ) and now lives with a disorder to remind her even more of the event. BIG YIKE LET’S MOVE ON … she’s a ray of sunshine ! loves animals and soccer to death. a social butterfly with no concept of personal space. insistent on not minding her business, plagued by a constant need to be liked by EVERYONE. book smart, emotionally intelligent … yet a whole dumbass. we love to see it.
WANTED CONNECTIONS …
cousins : fun tidbit, after her parent’s death she moved in with her uncle and his children. so, give me those very children ! her siblings are both older than herself and i’m dying for some same - aged partners in crime here. who played soccer with her after school ? who tried beer with her for the very first time ? i am WAITING.
soccer pals : captain of the local girl’s soccer team, since seventeen baby, sawyer’s in dire need of her soccer pals. y’all ever see the netflix original girls with balls ? yeah, me neither, but that could still be them versus the zombies. they’re all so close and athletic i NEED them to team up against the undead.
toxic church friends : i’m not calling christianity toxic … i’m calling white church going pinterest loving bitches toxic. i just think it’d be neat for her to have people from that part of her life really pushing this ~ religious agenda ~ onto her further. you know, shaming everything that she does. WHY NOT ! can’t think of a single reason why not, actually.
someone to get under : look … last year she got DUMPED by her boyfriend. it was rude as hell ! you don’t need to know his reason, okay … she did no wrong, mind your business … either way, give me SOMEONE ELSE for her to focus on so she can finally get over that skinny motherfucker. it doesn’t have to be reciprocated AT ALL, homies. she can thirst from afar … as long as her attention is redirected from ex - boyfriend to wow - possible - boyfriend. ja feel me ? cool.
OSWALT, KEVIN — twenty-one, waitress.
BASICS : born in fort elms as rowan blake, this teensy bitch had a good life going. two parents, three older siblings, one cool ass dog… you get the gist. but all things must come to an end, no ? so, when rowan here was five years old, she was approached by a teenage girl by the name ryan, and booboo the fool as she was, rowan followed this older, much cooler girl right into a stranger’s car… and then rowan was no more ! she spent the next year thirteen years of her life as kevin oswalt, living with her new sister and new mother — creepily nicknamed mama. to say her life with the oswalt’s was good would be… well, it’d be a lie. because kevin wasn’t the first kid they ‘napped, and neither was she the last. lets just say that house was a shit - fest and we should be glad she managed to run away at the tender age of seventeen. by sheer luck, she wound up back in fort elms and by even more luck, she managed to get an education and graduate. unrealistic ? take it up with 2016 me. other than that super fun backstory, kevin’s baby. she likes books ( always has, though it was her only form of entertainment for a good chunk of her life there ) and she likes french fries. she’s still discovering the world around her, even if she has been out and about for about four - ish years now. so if she’s a BIT NAIVE, then excuse her…
WANTED CONNECTIONS …
ex - boyfriend : not to go into too many details but kev’s introduction to the dating scene was less than ideal… barely legal and kept under wraps for A YEAR. it sucked, okay. not a good first experience, IN MY OPINION. kevin has another but she’s stupid. EITHER WAY, that left her kinda fucked - up when it comes to relationships. so, when she started dating her other ex circa summer 2017, she was pretty not - that - into - him. sorry we can’t all be over our 30 year old boyfriends… she never even said those three little words and them bitches dated for a year. TRAGIQUE.
brother : tragically, throughout the years, kevin’s brother is the single family member not picked up and that’s just… fucked, if you ask me. either way — his name is marcus blake but you can change his first to whatever ! he’s the sibling she was closest to as a wee bairn, alright. and i need him here… even if he wouldn’t know her as his sister anymore, but seeing as kev has managed to weasel her way into the blake family through mother and sisters REGARDLESS if anybody remembers or not, i’d say they’d cross paths anyway. oh, and he’s in a band… which isn’t to say juli’s, i mean it could be, but that’s not what i’m saying… anyways, that’s all.
bad influence : kevin’s too nice. and i don’t like it. so, please, pretty please, give me a plot of pure mayhem. somebody less outwardly chaotic than pippa but more scheming, and maybe capable of convincing kevin to grow a spine. think penelope and josie in legacies… but not gay. i mean, it COULD be gay. i’m not saying it HAS to be gay… mind your business.
victim by proxy : okay, hear me out… the oswalts are crazy people, and although kevin would like to be excluded from that narrative, she simply cannot. so, consider giving me somebody with some sort of connection to the kiddos missing ( alternatively : to the man she shanked… girls, ya gotta read her bio, i’m not exposing her further :see_no_evil: ) so kevin’s guilt can just SKYROCKET. that’s fun, right ? make friends with some poor bitch who’s little bro went missing, knowing full well what happened… sickening, kev, get help.
ROSILIO, ODETTE — thirty-five, florist.
BASICS : flaky defined. dropped out of high school, dropped out of california, dropped out of her own wedding … i mean, the list goes on. originally from mexicali, mexico odette moved to chino, california at the ripe age of five. her mother then proceeded to lose custody six years later. * that one vine vc * WAY TO GO, PAUL ! in and out of foster care since, eventually choosing to stay out for the remainder of her teens. until she got herself knocked up ( not by choice but ait ) and was forced to move back in with mommy … but hey, it all turned out fine in the end ! and when her daughter was four years old, she dipped forever. she’s since been living all over the states, only moving to fort elms five - ish years ago. and has indeed stayed put since. even if she did manage to pull a runaway bride. a bit of a bitch move, but at least she’s consistent. ish. because she’s not a bitch, okay, she’s simply … out of fucks to offer the world. can i get an amen.
WANTED CONNECTIONS …
ex - fiancé : like i said … left at the altar, that’s gotta knock you down a peg. or two. but she didn’t mean to stomp on his balls like that. in fact, they were very much in love at one point. dated for about two years until marriage was brought up and well, cold feet took over. and there’s no coming back from being a no show at your own wedding, is there. so that was that. marriage over before it even started. they didn’t get much of closure but that’s life for you.
mother : a horrible mother, plain and simple. she was in and out of jail when odette was in her custody, mostly due to drug related charges which was … not cute, girlie was like eight years old. though who knows, maybe she’s cleaned up her act, and maybe she’s ready to get back in her daughter’s life. or maybe she’s just looking for money … either way, get miss marisa to washington !
employees : i want … snotty teens, or early twenties bitches that she’ll have to manage. she’s had it with her own daughter, why not add more children for her to boss around. that, or somebody at work who she doesn’t wanna clock. an ally amongst the flowers.
chino friends : odette did indeed spend her early to mid teens on the streets and she must’ve made some friends along the way except for kai ( here’s your one mention of the simp @ salem ) … either some bad influences or some good ones. y’all ever seen the movie thirteen ? exactly like that. give me some blasts from the past to bring out the old odette.

So I rewatched the ten Friday the thirteenth/Jason Films ...
And so here they are ranked from worst to Best with my thoughts. Now up front I don’t actually view this movies as a series. In my head This is Ten Seperate alternate Universes in which the earlier installments only happening in broad strokes before each movie. It is the only way I can enjoy these films without finding the many many plot holes caused by the making it up as they went along film making approach. The first three I'll talk about are the ones I consider Watch if you have to see it all but these are the worst in the franchise set. 10. The Absolute worst of the worst is Jason goes to hell. This movie is just bad there are really only three scenes that are even worth watching. The opening where Reality ensures with the Government finally acting against Jason. The scene in the Diner where a Waitress does a dang good job of pummeling the man possessed by Jason before her death and the brief joking end teaser (that wasn’t meant to go anywhere) where Freddy’s clawed hand drags Jason’s mask down. I mean the rest of it is just terrible and it fails to really deliver on the primary appeal of the Jason films and that is watching the Final Girl (or Tommy Jarvis) beat the tar of Jason and finish him off until next time. Jason’s niece is just not that interesting and her movements are very slow. There is no freaking urgency in any of her scenes where she’s supposed to be running to get the dagger or anything else. 9. The second worst is Jason takes Manhattan again the final girl just isn't that interesting and a lot of the characters act in stupid ways even for this franchise. That said there are still a few moments that are fun like Jason scaring the street punks and while the final girl is not the best actor her and her designated love interest are at least attractive. 8. My pick for number eight is where a lot of Friday fans are going to hate me but it has to be Part VI Jason Lives. I mean yeah Jason is finally back and is finally the undead Zombie everyone thinks of when they think Jason Voorhees and that gives the film some punch. However the guy playing the adult Tommy Jarvis just cannot act even by horror film standards. His entire relationship with the final girl makes no sense and she is arguable even more useless than the ones that took the top spots. Still there are some interesting side characters who die and an example of the most wasted potential ever. Namely the head female councilor who took one look at Jason on the street and tried to get the hell out of dodge before her idiot boyfriend got them both int a situation where Jason killed them. I just can't help but imagine what would have happened if she'd made it to the station and the cops didn't believe her or Tommy and they teamed up to stop him. It would make so much more sense than rebellious daddy's girl thinks Tommy is hot and helps him escape Jail. Also if the unused ending had actually been used with Jason's dad it might have improved things a bit. The next seven are IMO all worth watching every so often unlike those three stinkers I listed above. 7. The very first friday the thirteenth falls here. The film is pretty good for what it is which is a blatant rip off of Halloween. The twist about the mother would have worked better if we'd ever seen her before in the film. They could have easily set her up in town as one of the locals saying that camp shouldn't have been reopened or even just had her in the back ground walking around. And Keven Bacon in a speedo is always nice to look at. 6. Friday the 13th part two goes here. I mean the living Jason trilogy is collectively the best of the franchise but taken on thier own they aren't as good. On one hand Part II is in almost every way a better film then the first one and improves itself by once again ripping off Halloween by creating the adult living Jason. Sure it makes no sense continuity wise but it works. The film would be much higher if not for the confusing ending that was real according to the director but as shot looks far more like a dream sequence. 5.Here is where I put The Final chapter or Part IV. See here's the thing I love the film but there are just some things that bug me about this one enough that it ends up here. The Tommy and his sister subplot is great but Rob has to be the most useless fake hero ever and in this franchise that is saying something. ON the other hand we see Crispin Glover's ridicules dance and even knowing the bts stuff that made it even more awkward it is still funny. 4. We leave the living Jason Trilogy here to jump to the end of the Franchise when it went into space. Jason X falls here not because it is a good movie but because it is a bad movie that knows its a bad movie and revels in it. Jason on the holodeck, Jason verses Space marines, UberJason and classic him getting his ass kicked by a robot. I just love it for all the sillyness it is just fun and some times fun is enough. 3. Part V falls here and again I know elitist friday fans are shaking thier heads in horror but I like this one. I like that Tommy is a complete train wreck after what happened and I really like the actor's portrayal and maybe it's shallow nostalgia but I first saw the film as a queer teen and I really appreciated the actors looks too. Plus I like that the town wasn't stupid and the guy they thought died three times and kept getting back up was cremated sure later films ignored it but again I look at them as a multiverse so in this universe he was cremated cause the town wasn't stupid. Plus Tommy as the new killer really could have been a really nice way to get away form the Halloween copy cat ness. Since being smaller and smarter he could have taken the new Jason in a different way but alas this film's bad reception ruined that chance. 2. Part VII the new blood. This would be number one if it wasn't for the slow beginning. This film takes so long to get going but when it does it quickly becomes one of the most enjoyable ones to watch and the Make up for Jason is just awesome best in the series hands down and Kane Hodder does so much with just a look and body language. Plus it is basically Jason versus Carries and that is just fun. 1. And now at Number 1 we have part III why is part III the number one its because I absolutely adore the final girl in this one. She fights in a very realistic way against Jason and there aren't any glaring moments where script stupidity bite her in the ass. The things that go wrong in her escape are not her fault. Other folks actions caused them and she reacts to them in a realistic and competent manor. If anyone is curious about the two other films the remake and Freddy vs jason. I liked Freddy vs jason but it is much more a nightmare on elm street film than a Friday film and the remake was just bad.

I know that comparing tv shows and stuff to current events is tasteless and bad regardless of how well-intentioned it might mean to be
and I'm not gonna do that.
but I just think it's funny that works of fiction; books, movies, video games, comics, music- a significant majority of art that has been made in the past getting close to hundred years has been very adamantly pro rebellion and against oppressive power structures.
like, let's just look at the most popular shit.
books: 1984, to kill a mockingbird, the great gatsby, the lord of the rings, huckleberry finn, alice in wonderland, charlotte's web, a tale of two cities, the grapes of wrath, anna karenina, war and peace, price and prejudice, great expectations, gone with the wind...
hmm let's see: fascism, racism, post-war, evil that threatens all free men, racism, growing up in a scary world, giving your life for a worthy cause, political revolution, the struggles of the impoverished, democracy versus facism, war, misogyny, the importance of morality over financial achievement, and the fucking civil war. I'm not even MENTIONING the oversaturation of the YA market with maximum ride and percy jackson and artemis fowl and harry potter and divergent and the hunger games and that's just off the top of my head. classic popular books have been written with themes of opposing the evils of oppression/tyranny almost exclusively.
movies: casablanca, godfather, a new hope, ET, raiders of the lost ark, jurassic park, forrest gump, shawshank redemption, the sound of music, schindler's list, the lion king, gladiator, alien, the matrix, chinatown, 12 angry men, blade runner, mad max fury road, 12 years a slave, parasite, moonlight, and of course all of the film adaptations of the aforementioned movies.
literally every single one of these has criticized corrupt governments or other related systems. looking over this there's a whole lot of movies with nazi antagonists (or space nazis, looking at star wars), almost universally loved by large audiences. film as medium is usually comedy or romance or horror, but the very best of the best are about how evil humans with power are bad.
video games: skyrim, red dead redemption, ocarina, half life 2, bioshock, grand theft auto, metal gear, uncharted, resident evil, mass effect, the witcher, warcraft, god of war, dark souls, xenoblade, halo, perfect dark, metroid, baldur's gate 2, the last of us, splinter cell, diablo, and a little thing called final fantasy 7
literally every single highly rated well loved story based video game has heavily involved corrupt governments and corporations being evil. well also sometimes zombies and dragons and massively omnicidal aliens and demons... but final fantasy 7, which is most gamers 100% greatest most favorite game ever created, is LITERALLY ABOUT A RACIST CORPORATE FUNDED GOVERNMENT DESTROYING THE ENVIRONMENT FOR MONEY AND KILLING THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE JUST TO MAKE A QUICK BUCK. and some other stuff here and there but the main story is that shinra is committing genocide to steal access to heaven (also sephiroth wants to destroy the world but I mean it's a JRPG come on) and you are trying to stop them by blowing up their shit. gee where have I seen that before?
oh and don't even fucking get me STARTED on punk, rap, thrash, soul, classic country, blues, and other music genres expressly built from the ground up as rejections to common society and the subsequent problems involved. I'm not including post-9/11 country, pop, swing, most white boy metal, modern sad boy r&b, or other genres of, well, major privilege whether white or financial. but music, real music, true music made with passion and not a product made for $elling out, is, always has been, and forever will be, deeply rooted in seeing past what society wants you to see and hear and think and act like. and black people, black ARTISTS are pretty much at the root of all of those things. we wouldn't have anything I mentioned if not for bb king, muddy waters, blind jefferson, buddy guy, john lee hooker, and bessie smith.
we as americans have been conditioned since world war 1 ended (and even before that) and especially since the cold war was coming to a close, to recognize, acknowledge, and destroy fascism, racism, misogyny, the environmental parasites, corrupt governments, overbearing corporations, and evil in general. but only the ones who appreciate art.
if you don't read books, don't watch movies, don't play video games, don't listen to music, don't attach value to art in general... you're an idiot. you're a waste of space. you're just sitting in your cushy homes eating kale and watching livePD and talking out your ass about how you want revolution to come peacefully and only in a way you seem convenient. you're spending all of your time contributing to the corrupt system.
which is a real goddamn shame because if you benefit from that kind of privilege, so you don't have to work two or even three jobs just to give your kids breakfast you should have time to kill in enjoying art. but no. you spend all your time and money making sure that nobody else can have what you have. you waste your life so that nobody else can have one of their own. it's just disgusting.
so yeah, if you're not explicitly with the protestors, not only are you the dumbest fucking moron on the planet, but you're also against them. so at least step to the side and shut the fuck up.

Has the Paint Dried on Malaysia’s Protest Art?
Almost never has a singular impression develop into so powerfully strong that it is associated with the downfall of an whole regime. All through heritage, political and protest artwork has generally accompanied any sort of well-known battle however astonishingly, even with the introduction of social media, by means of which we often see a multitude of memes and GIFs, seldom are there solitary photographs that completely encapsulate community sentiment.
Fahmi Reza’s depiction of former Malaysian Primary Minister Najib Razak as a clown is 1 such picture. The artwork reverberated strongly with the discontent simmering between the Malaysian populace. The painted big purple lips, coupled with that ghastly, practically zombie-like grin, evoked a deep-seated perception of betrayal and a breech of have faith in.
Fahmi’s “Bapak Kleptokrasi” (Father of Kleptocracy). Revealed with the artist’s permission.

Najib was deposed final calendar year in May perhaps after the opposition Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition scored a astonishing victory in the typical election. His unpopularity experienced arrived at a fever pitch soon after pretty much 10 years in power owing to a collection of multibillion dollar corruption scandals in which he’d been implicated. The former chief and his near allies ended up allegedly involved in the laundering of at least $4.5 billion from the state’s 1MDB fund. Najib is now on demo.
For his operate, Fahmi was arrested and billed in court docket for violating the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998, which censors any offensive content posted on line (the prices have been later dropped). But the imagery he produced experienced now taken on a life of its possess.
Blown-up, hand-held versions of his perform were viewed at demonstrations, or on partitions as posters — some of which ended up place up by the artist himself. Equivalent operates by other artists also contributed to the setting up storm of protest imagery. Fahmi observed this proliferation positively, not seeking to declare exclusivity in excess of the indignation his works tapped into and incited.
For proof of the usefulness of his get the job done, Fahmi factors to groups allied with the preceding administration that have copied his type for their possess agenda — portraying current PH ministers as clowns, way too.
“I guess the simple fact that the clown caricature is currently inspiring copycats, by groups led by people tied to the prior routine, it shows how impactful the primary style and design was. First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you gain. And then they copy you,” he tells The Diplomat.
It has already been a 12 months and Najib has only just sat down in courtroom to face his crimes. The state, on the other hand, is infused with enthusiasm for the dawn of a additional clear age. But on the floor and in concrete conditions, has a year really created a big difference? And do the current indications position to comprehensive change?
What’s a radical avenue artist to do these times in Malaysia?
One particular of Fahmi’s pre-election artworks. Revealed with the artist’s authorization.
Previous routine, smoke of history Liberty nonetheless wafting in the breeze The new aristocracy just smells like the outdated regime (whoa)
— From Undesirable Religion’s 2019 tune, “Old Regime”
An admirer of punk songs and its basic disdain for the power held by the establishment, Fahmi invokes a spirit of skepticism towards purported democratic reform. He mentions that when the recent scenario is a drastic enhancement on the kleptocracy of the Najib administration, it would be silly to believe that the nation experienced rid by itself of pernicious complications of repression about the course of a one 12 months.
Poster in solidarity with a scholar activist (Asheeq Ali) who was investigated by law enforcement below the controversial Sedition Act around his speech during a protest. Released with the artist’s authorization.
“The democratic reforms that had been promised are progressing at a snail’s speed. Most of the election guarantees have not been fulfilled. Virtually all of the draconian rules that they pledged to abolish are nevertheless in place. For instance, the controversial colonial period Sedition Act that has been misused and abused by the previous routine is nonetheless remaining used to examine activists till today,” Fahmi says.
In March, 7 activists who experienced arranged a march on on Worldwide Women’s Working day ended up explained to by the authorities that they could facial area prices of sedition.
Fahmi has known several people who have been victimized by the Sedition Act, a type of legislation on the guides in most authoritarian countries to quell significant speech or exercise.
A report by Human Legal rights Check out on Malaysia masking the entirety of 2018 notes that certain laws that have develop into the bane of absolutely free speech and justice are nevertheless broadly used by the authorities in Malaysia. Prior to he remaining electric power, Najib passed the Anti-Pretend News legislation, which, like the Sedition Act, vaguely defines what can be deemed “fake” or malicious data. The regulation has since been applied to focus on state critics.
The point out also carries on to utilize the Avoidance of Criminal offense Act and Avoidance of Terrorism Act, both equally of which have been given widespread criticism for currently being draconian. The legal guidelines permit arrests and detention devoid of a trial. The new administration has pledged to abolish these types of guidelines, but has however to do so.
Tranquil assemblies by various groups continue to be hounded by the law enforcement. Around 50 users of the Parti Sosialis Malaysia, for case in point, held a demonstration to submit an attraction to the new govt final June. Police subsequently lodged complaints versus them beneath the Peaceful Assembly Act, which requires rigid authorization and assistance from the authorities to keep community gatherings.
“We’re however battling to see real social and political transform in this nation,” Fahmi suggests.
Poster criticizing Mahathir’s determination to renege on his ruling coalition’s election pledge to abolish the Official Secrets and techniques Act (OSA). Released with the artist’s authorization.
Design of Dissent
Between Fahmi’s new artworks are parts criticizing existing Key Minister Mahathir Mohamad for backtracking on a marketing campaign promise to do away with the Official Strategies Act (OSA). The a great deal maligned OSA has been generally cited as the motive behind the lack of transparency amongst public officials and as this sort of generates a bigger propensity towards corruption.
“Element of my perform is still focused on hard and dismantling the myths that keep the procedure alive. And my protest artwork is nonetheless targeted on highlighting any kinds of corruption or wrongdoing by the folks in electricity,” Fahmi says.
Ranging from corruption, racial inequalities, and oppression to crackdowns on progressive movements, Fahmi maintains his cost towards serving to a nation visualize its individual crisis of democracy. Soon after all, how can we envisage any notion of political troubles with no obtaining an imprint of it in our heads?
“The previous regime was overthrown, but the pillars that supported the preceding routine are nevertheless standing,” he affirms.
For Fahmi, the art did not quit with the downfall of Najib, nor his present-day felony trial. The place has truly opened up for greater struggles and in his scenario, a bigger audience of these who have just woke up to political lifetime.
“Protest artwork can inspire and encourage, and can be employed as a instrument to raise consciousness and to wake folks up,” Fahmi suggests. “It can transfer individuals to choose motion, to convey down their governing administration. And as a medium of protest, it can also be a device to thrust for social improve.”
A write-up-election poster from racism and racial sentiments even now remaining used by politicians, “fight racism not each individual other.” Released with the artist’s authorization.
In spite of the tremendous force positioned on Mahathir to steer the nation absent from the bleak periods it has been via recently, he has failed to impress the likes of Fahmi in his first year in place of work. Possibly that is not surprising, as Mahathir himself spent the bulk of his political occupation as a essential aspect of the institution, serving as key minister from 1981 to 2003 If anything, Mahathir has epitomized stagnation — and a persistent local weather of crackdowns and severe human rights violations.
As extended as those people keep on being, artists like Fahmi will exist. He has unquestionably garnered worldwide appeal for his operate, and the entire world is viewing for what occurs up coming in Malaysia.
“In nations in which governing administration critics are persecuted, dissidents are silenced, and political opponents are jailed, we require additional artists and far more designers to increase up and have the bravery to stand up versus injustice, making use of their artwork as a weapon of protest and resistance,” Fahmi suggests.
