The sequel to this: ASOIAF clothing styles!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Westerlands and The Reach def have similar styles bc they’re so close to each other and have similar climates. Like with their hair, they love showing off their wealth and opulence, so gowns are made from the finest fabrics and are heavily detailed with embroidery, puffed sleeves, and short bodices
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The North is so big that what a person wears definitely influenced by location (near the wall, near the vale, or near the riverlands) but in general, there are a lot of high necked, tight fitting gowns for practicality. Made of thick, heavy fabrics but with wide sleeves and lots of embroidery to make it look pretty!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dorne is full of colors to offset the beige of the desert. They use a lot of long, loose, airy fabrics so that they can have detailed and intricate outfits but still be covered from the sun and not be overheated. Location determines how covered up they are because of the heat. Detailing is VERY big, especially golden embroidery and lining.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think in the Stormlands, clothing is more durable than anything else, no wispy fabrics here. They’re fairly similar to the north, with thick and sturdy fabrics, high collars, and long sleeves to keep out the constant rain. However I think they love metal accessories and jewelry on their gowns, and put it everywhere
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the Riverlands have a much more “casual” silhouette than the Reach or the Vale, with a drop waist or a loose dress than only gives you figure when you wear a belt. Low necklines and long sleeves I think, because the weather is not freezing but not Dornish either. I think a lot of soft fabrics too, for those who can afford velvet and such

Do you think a dragon riders clothing should be realistic in writing? This is something that came up with friends, and i got curious on a writer perspective since i am not one. I have a masters on filmography and a tesis on the world history of fantasy movies/series BUT i do not understand much of writing. The duality came from this: some of the friends said it should be realistic, comparing it to bikers gears. It should protect the rider. And some said that it depends on the fantasy setting of the world the rider is in. If he can use magic as protection instead and so on. For me, in movies and series, it all depends on something called suspencion of disbelief. If you are able to make the watcher think "well, it makes sense" or not question the outfit AT ALL, then you can make the rider wear a bikini and it doesn't matter. But my other friends said it was different for writing (they are also not writers) and this has been BUGGING ME because i have no idea if it really is different. So i decided to ask directly to some of my favourite fantasy writers.
Love this! As a biker myself, I come down on the side of 'comfortable/flexible but offers the max amount of protection for that'.
I think it should mostly be wind/element proof, because I feel like that's probably the dragon rider's greatest danger, providing that they're strapped into their saddle (I'm convinced riders would require some kind of equipment to allow them to do the most daring manoeuvres). If there's magic the rider can access to prevent falling or to throw up a shield against aerial attack, then that's fine.
I haven't seen House of the Dragon, but from this image, Aemond seems to have a high necked top/jacket, gloves (essential because holy crap wind chill is a thing), and some nice tack (saddle with handles and equipment?!) to hold onto and keep him in place. He loses points for all that loose, long hair though (see below). You'd definitely want to have some kind of goggles/eye-protection because your eyes are gonna be watering like hell, and if you happen to encounter a fly or insect at a Mach Dragon, it's gonna hurt.
Tumblr media
Like horse-riding gear (jodhpurs, (English) chaps etc.) it could also be designed not just for comfort and flexibility, but also for grip and a secure hold with your leggies. Slight heel on the boots if there are stirrups on the saddle to prevent the boot from sliding too far through, fleece lined for warmth in the cold air.
Again, as a biker with long hair, I think it's safe to say that if the rider has long hair, they're gonna want to plait it, or wrap it with something like a balaclava because brushing that tangle out is a NIGHTMARE after even a short ride/flight XD.
In general, I tend to come down on your side of thinking though. If it works in the world and (like all armour or PPE shall we say) if it looks comfortable and easy to move in, then I'll buy it, no matter the medium (film/tv/writing)
Finally, I can say that leathers in themselves are not warm. You need layers.

*More* World Building Clothing Concepts
Tumblr media
Inspiration from Chinese, Korean, (slight) Indian, (heavily) Russian, and French clothing!!
The writing on the shawl is from a written language I made! It’s basically a protection citation of their religion.
From (your) right to left, the races are Amph, Reprin (Perpin), and Hididi (Nid). The models aren’t accurate to body proportion or anatomy… since the Nidden peoples are inspired by spiders and have three pairs of arms.

Examples of dragons clothing and accessories. First one is a formal dress, second is your typical commoner dress, and the third is also formal dress, or neat-casual.
Dragons tend to dress very loosely and often lightly. Ponchos, cloaks, scarfs, robes, shawls, large sleeves, something akin to leg warmers, and other random loose fabrics are quite common. Most dragons live in the mainlands where the temperature is more on the warm side, hence their light clothing, but in colder regions, the same style is achieved; just with heavier fabrics and more undergarments.

Progress pictures for one of my biggest clothing projects ever, my famous wizard robe. Upcycled from a shitty shein robe I got from the thrift store. This is the best thing I’ve made, ever, and put way too much time in.

Something I've noticed with some dried lavender I have access to is that it only really releases a strong smell when it is crushed, otherwise, the scent is quite subdued.
So anyway I think it'd be cool if by using an alchemic glove whose palm is lined with golden sigils and runes a character could crush various ingredients together in their hand to create aerosolised potion effects.

Hi! this is a mainly DnD based question that sorta runs into Fable-
So I'm currently running an entirely underwater campaign! The species I've included is basically every aquatic DnD species (some with a few twists) along with some homebrewed underwater dragonborn, etc-
However, I'm having trouble with choosing a clothing type to put on the sea elves? My version has them more telchin-ish- aka, maybe funky colored human base with longer legs, a tail, and I've given them webbed, frog-like feet and fins in a variety of places.
Logically, they honestly really wouldn't wear clothes- but I'm not doing that because that'd make certain scenes very hard to draw-
so what do you generally imagine the telchin wearing? normal clothes, edited versions of those, etc? Right now I have the two sea elves my party interact with on a regular basis in sort of tank-top-esque wear and edited shorts of a kind.
:]
Ooooh okay that’s a really fun question my worldbuilding gears are turning lmao-
I have a post somewhere here on my blog about Telchin clothing and specifically my development of Ulysses design and the cultural influences, which basically boils down to “Telchins at the start of war = Ancient Greek clothes (chitons, togas, cloaks, etc). Telchins during the projects = WW2 fashion (pants, jumpsuits, jackets, etc)”
If you wanted my thoughts on how I would maybe clothe them in a broader sense/outside the context of Fable, I have some ideas! ✨
I think tank tops and shorts definitely fit the vibe. More-modern style clothing just underwater is always a super fun route to take, even for the visual of just clothing underwater being funky and something that’s a little different and new!
Typically in my mind, when it comes to clothing in world building it usually boils down to resources and purpose.
Resources is more the boring side of things. What kinds of materials do they have access to, how do they manufacture the clothing, blah blah blah. Not really something you need to worry about in fantasy worlds cause usually the answer is “cause magic” and “because it’s cool so I said so” which is the more fun kind of fantasy imo, and getting too bogged down in the granular details as a DM/storyteller just ain’t very productive.
Purpose on the other hand is where you can really have fun with underwater clothing! Is it designed to be functional, or stylistic? If its purpose is to be functional, maybe their clothing develops like swimsuits, almost? Like you said: shorts, crop tops, swim-shirts, etc! Something that covers enough or the body while still not being too cumbersome in the water, prioritizing movement when swimming! Or maybe you want to take that to the extreme; maybe their clothing developed like wetsuits! Skintight, smooth, shiny, and insulating! Designed to move with them, just a layer of covering for their bodies to make them more hydrodynamic! Or, if the purpose of the clothing is to be attractive and fashionable and flashy, maybe they do go in a more Greco-Roman route! Maybe it’s all about togas and dresses and cloaks and veils! Layers of long, flowing fabrics which shimmer and billow out in the water and draw attention to the person wearing them! These huge billowing clothes which make a statement, rather than help with movement or anything!
And it doesn’t have to be one or the other, either. You can mix and match both! Maybe the skintight wetsuit-like clothes are designed with patterns that ripple and shift as the wearer moves and they become beautiful and hypnotic! Maybe the large billowing cloaks are useful when avoiding predators underwater, making the wearer seem bigger, scarier and more imposing to any underwater monsters! The telchin’s clothing in my eyes follows a direct path almost: the fashionable pre-war clothing in billowing fabrics which allow freedom of movement and expression, that slowly transition into cleaner, more tailored clothing as they need to conserve fabric, and avoid being grabbed by drowned, losing that expression in the process. There’s so much room to play around with elements of either or both when it comes to it!
I know this was very rambling but I hope it was somewhat helpful!! Your campaign sounds really cool, an underwater campaign is such an interesting concept!! I hope you have fun running it!

@the-ellia-west so y’know the clothing worldbuilding I did? Well, in the past, due to my inability to actually draw anything (the bane of many sewists), I’ve sewn things (either in human or doll size) to help figure out fantasy outfits and how they look and work and all of that fun stuff
So what I mean to say is I was thinking about fabrics and materials, and then got thinking about a few specific fabrics in my stash that would work really well, so sewed up a couple of doll outfits from your world!
Tumblr media
Evette (left) is in upper-class Feyranite clothing and Josefina is dressed Caliskian
I had to make a couple of changes for a a couple of reasons (some things don’t work on 1/3 scale and dolls have a lot less mobility than people do). Plus the skirts ended up sticking out a lot because this fabric has way less drape on this scale than it would on a person. But those things aside, all the pieces match up and they’re pretty realistic
I also took step-by-step pictures when getting them dressed so you can see how all of the things work and go together
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also added a little belt to this one (I was going for that kind of draped late medieval belt style; it admittedly looks a bit funny on Evette’s very disproportionate body) and a necklace for a bit of pizzazz
And the hairstyle I did for her:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lots of braids and ribbons
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The shirt on this one is a little long, since it’s the one thing I didn’t make specifically for this (it’s from Josefina’s normal clothes, which are meant to represent clothing in New Mexico around 1824)
It’s kind of ironic that this account is named after my dolls and I think this is the first time I’ve posted any of them. But if anyone wants to see more of my doll sewing projects, the handle for my doll Instagram account is the same as my username on here

Ceremonial Regalia
Had the need to draw an outfit for this OC I initially created for a Discord server, Wind's Wakeful Winnow. The beast is made of clay, and so are its 2500+ children which it sculpted group by group over the course of about 200 years. That's a lotta birthdays, so its solution was to designate a single week every year to hold a festival in celebration of its offspring. Depicted here is Winnow being dressed in garments created by its two eldest children/assistants, I Listen Over The Water and Joy's Gentle Keening, to be worn for the opening rites.

Behold, the beloved, newly ordained cleric for the Temple of Yuko at Mount Verth! Look closely, and you'll see the sparkles in his eyes, and spot an affinity to creatures of feline descent. Though he is yet to develop his ability to transform into what may resemble a common house cat, he prefers the rest of sleeping for long hours a day and the comfort of a fireplace over the perils and oddities of an adventure. Still, he's heard of the Forest Faux holding a many number of mysteries and treasures of all types, and it is only part of his nature to sate his curiosity.
(uncovered vers of the background under the cut !!!)
I was really going for a stained glass-vibe i hope thats made clear ^^" anyway, i like it :3 send me a prayer please the symmetry tool in csp is so hard to work with

Could be cool to have boots that incorporate some kind of metal or stone that sparks when experiencing abrasion so that when a character slides their shoes against the floor in a certain way they can cast a shower of sparks.
