(note, this is an old post, but i've decided to do more blogging like this here, so i remembered it.)

i decided to try out star trek online and live out my trekkie fantasies the other day. my first run in with the game was eons ago at a thrift store, but my current laptop is lacking a cd player, so i couldn't really try it out for sure. i don't know if it would work anyways considering it's a copy of the game from, what, 2010? what would be the point of that.

the first star trek game i ever played was the TNG game for the snes. i emulated it on my shitty old laptop. it was unfortunately a bust, cause i had no idea what i was doing.

speaking of tng, before i do my review, did you know a certain somebody used to make tng edits? can you recognize that flute sample?

anyway, my best friend dave (who doesn’t even have a tumblr) brought it up, assuming i’d never heard of star trek online. TCH! who do you think i am, you simpleton? naturally, i had to flex on him. whipping out the cd like some kind of seasoned star trek online veteran just to make a mockery of him. but really, the joke is on me, because let’s be honest, no one takes a self-proclaimed star trek online expert seriously.

so, i downloaded it off steam and ignored all the mixed reviews! i didn't stay in character creation for too long, but i tried to make him resemble me as much as possible. that's because my character's name is john kirk. he is john tiberius kirk.

john t. kirk of the u.s.s johnterprise. because enterprise is a restricted word (STUPID AND LAME?)

here is what i was greeted to.

quite frankly, i'm a little upset at the amount of diversity aboard. already i am seeing TWO vulcans. this is absurd. there is only one vulcan that should be aboard my ship, and he hasn't finished downloading the game yet.

OK! TIME TO PLAY THE FREAKIN' GAME FOR REAL! :D

after picking some of my skills (i chose to be aggressive, pistol handy, and uhh... i forgot the other one but believe me when i say it was good.)

i am meet this son of a bitch

captain...? CAPTAIN? OF THE JOHNTERPRISE? THE HELL YOU ARE! GET YOUR FALLOUT CLAYMATION ASS OFF OF MY FREAKING CHAIR! i thought you started out as captain? what is the point of naming my ship if i don't even get to be captain??? i need to show this guy who is BOSS.

the second thing i figured out about this game, is that if you walk into an object and believe in yourself you can actually gyrate with skill akin to that of a zumba instructor. so, i immediately had to gyrate next to captain isaac carrot to put him in his place.

it was a massacre for garrett. if i was you, "captain", i'd hang my head in shame and go back to being an ensign from being so hopelessly outmatched. it was also at this point i remembered that i could record my gameplay, which countered my ability to remember that my computer's cpu couldn't properly cool itself and i hadn't turned on my laptop fan. so amidst scanning some debris, my computer shat itself and died.

The word of the day must be included in your drabble. However, the words themselves do not need to be exact. For example, if the word is zip, it could be used as zip, zipping, zipper, zipped, and unzip. The words may also have double meanings and can be used either way. For example, complex can mean both difficult or can mean a group of similar buildings. Both would be accepted.

There are 18 words that can be used as replacement words throughout. If the word of the day isn't inspiring you, you can use one of the 18 replacement words instead.

obviously we all know how much i love byler, and what im about to say is going to sound like “gen z walking away from the white house on fire with hayloft by mother mother playing” but i have to speak my truth here- i think byler being canon will go FAR beyond the fandom and casual watchers of stranger things. we might literally be the early adopters of a pop cultural phenomenon that could go down in history as one of the most important moments in media history.

stranger things is a really bizarre phenomenon in the grand scheme of things, because it is SO famous. it’s popularity has been compared to shows like game of thrones, but it goes even beyond that, because EVERYONE watches it. i’ve been watching it since i was eleven. my mom watches it. my uncles watch it. my best friend watches it. my grandma watches it. it’s viewership is so wide because there are so many aspects of it that appeal to so many different people. the impact this show has sent a song released forty years ago to number one on the charts practically overnight and it STILL plays on the top 40 radio to this day.

think about american politics as they are right now- we’re bearing witness to one of (if not THE) most important election in american history. the difference between trump and kamala is the difference between potential dystopia and nuclear fallout and peace and progressiveness. if trump wins, he will pull all of our aid from ukraine, letting russia push forward into western europe, and we all know what happens when a country tries to push into western europe. trump’s agenda in project 2025 imposes potential laws that will take us back hundreds of years in lgbtq+ rights, rights for people of color, and women’s rights. this election has caused a huge amount of dread and fear in the american people especially as the days push on. and what do people historically cling to in moments of fear like this? art.

think about music during the vietnam war, movies like “red dawn” during the cold war, or mccarthyism during world war two. when people are afraid of the real world, they tend to turn to popular media for escapism. we’re already seeing it, as ridiculous as it sounds, in things like brat summer or the debate edits to chappell roan songs. it might not seem like it’s happening because everything about it is different today in the digital age versus sixty years ago when tvs were boxes, but it is. this is only the beginning. and with the release of the next stranger things season, it’s possible that it could only grow more.

picture this: it’s next july. trump has been sworn in as 47th president of the united states and is six months into his second term. there’s already talks of him overturning obergefell v. hodges (the supreme court ruling that gave us gay marriage), there’s now a nationwide abortion ban, and political opponents of his are slowly seeming to disappear and go inactive. but hey! the 2020’s most beloved tv show is airing its last season this week.. it’s an easy way for us all to feel nostalgia about a time (wether that be the 80s or summer 2019) when our country was progressing forward instead of so drastically backwards as it is now, or to just watch a cool sci-fi show with one of the highest viewerships of any show ever, second only to game of thrones. everyone is turning on their tvs at midnight to watch these new episodes and suddenly- the main couple consisting of the two main characters of the show breaks up, the boy leaving the girl for his childhood best friend, whom he has been in love with for years but been forced to ignore because of the way society views gay people?

and everyone is seeing this, even 40+ y/o homophobes who watch the show for the nostalgia factor and never suspected a thing. the public is outraged. fox news is going on about the gay agenda. but the shock of the news is turning heads. people are changing their minds because… people being gay actually hasn’t only been a thing for the last ten years??! gay people might not actually be lesser humans? ANYBODY CAN BE GAY? what is happening! we know everyone watches this, so people of all backgrounds all across the world and more specifically the country are reacting to this in different ways. but no matter how you look at it, everyone is talking about it. it’s all over everyone’s for you page, SNL is parodying it, anderson cooper is talking about it on CNN, trump is denouncing it on twitter, there’s a push for it to be banned in florida.

suddenly, the democrats are picking up on this, because isn’t this everything we’ve been fighting for this whole time put at the forefront of a mainstream show? this is forcing everyone to confront the implications of having a gay ship be the focal point of a show with the viewership of stranger things, and the democratic party and it’s supporters pick up on this, turning it into a symbol and essentially a martyr of the party as a whole. whatever song (and you know there will be a song) that’s used in the scene where byler becomes official is immediately topping the charts. people are walking around wearing t shirts with byler quotes on them like we’re seeing now with the kamala brat t shirts. hundreds of people are influenced by it and we may even see an increase in support for politicians who advocate specifically for gay rights or are gay themselves.

this all happens because when people who are being spotlighted by pop culture speak out, everybody hears it. it’s the same reasoning behind why an endorsement from taylor swift could outright win kamala this election. a huge part of our population has quiet beliefs that they’re just waiting to dive into until somebody in mainstream media tells them that it’s a good idea. in making byler cannon, stranger things could be changing the trajectory of popular culture and american politics as a whole for years to come. it’s all about the domino effect. if people see this, all it does is open a gateway for other stories and conversations to happen, because something so outrageous as making byler canon during the early stages of project 2025 will turn the heads of every politically inclined person in america, from every maga cap wearing trucker to every blue haired barista, and when heads are turned things are changed.

A day before a status hearing was set to go before a federal judge for a religious discrimination lawsuit by The Satanic Temple, the attorney representing the infernal religious organization notified the judge that that would no longer be necessary, voluntarily ending the case for good.

The following day, July 24, Judge Joan Lefkow dismissed the cases with prejudice “with each party to bear its own costs and fees.”

The Satanic Temple Inc. and Adam Vavrick, an ordained minister of the Satanic Temple and a leader of TST's Illinois congregation, sought to deliver an invocation before a Chicago City Council meeting. However, they were not invited after, TST claims, more than three years of asking to deliver an invocation and not being given an explanation for why they were not invited.

TST sued the city in federal court on May 3, 2023, alleging violations of the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause.

We wrote about the background of this whole thing in December 2023 and again in May 2024; in the latter, we also made a bit of a prediction there at the very end in reference to the scheduled trial date:

“Given TST’s usual burn-through rate and the ongoing major schism centered on TST Ministry, it will also be interesting to see if ‘Minister of Satan Adam Vavrick’ is even still associated with TST and ordained by the time 2025 rolls around.”

And wouldn’t you know it, a little more than a month after we said that, the plaintiff Vavrick announced he’d left The Satanic Temple Ministry:

2024 was.... something. Here goes... VERY long post b/c this year was A LOT. But in about 9 hours it'll be in the past! so!

I had the worst work year I've had; it was my first as a lead, a brand new curriculum, and assistants who were hard to open up to. And my boss was telling me it was on me to open up to them. Not quite right. They needed to open up to me too. They ended up leaving, and now I've got one of my good friends working with me, she's a huge help. I had a lot of struggles with constructive criticism - my brain takes it as SEE YOU AREN'T GOOD ENOUGH... definitely still working on that too. People at work want to help me, not put me down. I'm still building my confidence there, but I will get there!

Personally - I still dealt with a lot of the anxiety. I had a massive falling out with my former best friend, Cherry. And yes, it was my fault. I know I'll never get to apologize, but my biggest task here is forgiving myself. What I did was a product of being unhealed; now I know better. I still miss her sometimes, but I know I'll be okay. Something that happened caused me to fall out with Mel, but luckily we've been able to rekindle and now things are stronger than ever. Forgive and forget. I'm so happy to have her back in my life - she's one of my biggest cheerleaders!!! I love you! I also strengthened friendships with Bridge (I dunno your real name), Renee, and made new friends! I'm working on coming out of my shell... I'm not nearly as bad as my anxiety makes me out to be.

And with Matt, things are amazing <3 we're both taking steps towards getting ready for the next chapter... so one day in 2025 you might see me post a ring!!! ;) he's my biggest offline supporter, and I wonder every day how I got lucky enough to find him. I love him dearly and I can't wait to see where life takes us in 2025.

Healing... whoa boy has this been a downhill rollercoaster lately! In the good way! I'm becoming more accepting of myself and all my weirdness, enjoying my hobbies more and more, and changing how I see myself. I'm trying to treat myself more compassionately when I mess up or get into my head - this is hard work, I didn't get these mindsets in a day, I won't reverse them in a day!! I truly think this new obsession with Bob Dylan helped - it refreshed me, gave me some new energy that I hadn't gotten in a long time.

every industry has some amount of sexism going on in it. i mean look at the executive board for every company. the entertainment industry is particularly obvious in it's sexism because the industry itself is SO visible. no one hears about a friend of a friend who works in a small school district and got told weird shit by the superintendent, but when a blockbuster movie comes out we can all see the way the camera and the script and the promos treat the woman differently. the point of the fucking entertainment industry is to be seen, and so we see.

in online entertainment (particularly streaming and youtube) shit gets crazier because while the entertainment industry has SOME protections, the online space isn't so...i guess the closest word i can find is "centralized"? a good intimacy coordinator can help someone feel safe while filming certain scenes and can advocate for boundaries, there are unions, there's other more specific resources people pull on but i can't think of their names because i don't follow hollywood activities much. point is there's almost always a company that has authority/power over things and they can (CAN, they dont always DO) use that authority to make the workplace less misogynistic. but theres just no equivalent for that in independent online entertainment. youtube/twitch/whoever should (again SHOULD, they don't always DO) be moderating the content actually posted on their platforms, but what if a creator gets harassed in a discord server? or maybe a couple creators meet up and, oh idk just off the top of my head, one of them gets shitfaced and calls the woman in their group a whore? whose fucking jurisdiction is that?

i feel like MCYT in particular has this problem just because of how minecraft is built. yeah you can play it solo but the game hits best in multiplayer, particularly with servers where people can consistently interact and build bits and dynamics and plotlines (not just RP plotlines. group builds and prank wars are plotlines). so as these servers happen you get these little petri dish workplaces with WILDLY different experiences largely dependent on whoever started the attached discord server. the experience of working in Hermitcraft is not the same as Lifesteal SMP is not the same as QSMP is not the same as Bear SMP is not the same as DSMP and so on and so on.

stack this fuckin online fallout-bunker-esque weirdness on top of being within the wider gaming community. women have been involved in gaming since it fucking started as an industry and yet to this day are consistently erased in both the development of games and the audience playing them. so even in more chill workplaces like Hermitcraft (allegedly chill. big allegedly chill. i have been burned before. this post is from January 12 2025) with a server of 24 active members, only 4 aren't cis men.

i guess my point here is i don't think that something about MCYT is uniquely misogynistic as compared to idk whatever community is consistently playing Marvel Heroes. i do think that online independent entertainment is particularly prone to exploitation because of the lack of actual network for people to get help from, and i think MCYT comes up more frequently than other communities when we discuss this abuse because the collaboration-driven nature of the game causes there to just be more of those consistent group environments where the workplace culture gets fallout-bunker crazy.

p.s. if someone familiar with other streaming circles and the level of misogyny/exploitation going on over there in comparison to MCYT please let me know i'm very curious. i've got a tinfoil hat that says that another reason we hear about it more in MCYT is that minecraft's versatility as a medium draws in a more diverse audience so people are able to at least Eventually open up about abuse and get sympathy more than they would in other streaming circles like idk Marvel Heroes. idk why i'm going in on Marvel Heroes in this post but thats our strawman for today ladies and gents its Marvel Herooooes
