Godly Parents: SoC edition
(Lil disclaimer: This is not necessarily PJO's meaning of Godly Parent. It's just basically a "Which God is your godly parent" buzzfeed quiz but with actual information-)
Kaz: Nemesis, Goddess of indignation against, and retribution for, evil deeds and undeserved good fortune. Kaz spent the entire two books and the bigger part of his life holding grudges and planning his revenge on an arrogant man who got away with destroying a bunch of people's lives. He makes it his life mission to make him pay for his crimes.
Inej: Hermes, Messenger of the gods; god of travel, commerce, communication, borders, eloquence, diplomacy and thieves. First of all, Inej is Suli. Suli people are known to be "nomads", travelling from place to place. Second, Kaz hired her to be his spider, to collect and deliver important information, a messenger of some kind. And a detail I particularly liked is the whole thing with the shoes. Hermes most characteristic item are his flying sandals; and Inej is also particularly fond of her climbing leather slippers.
Jesper: Hephaestus, God of the forge, craftsmanship, invention, fire, metallurgy and volcanoes, craftsman of the gods. Yeah, yeah. The obvious reason is in fact because Jesper is a Fabrikator. He literally controls metal. If it's parental issues we're talking about, well, we all know how that went for both of them.
Wylan: Apollo, God of Sun, light, prophecy, philosophy, archery, truth, inspiration, poetry, music, arts, manly beauty, medicine, healing, and plague. "Because of Wylan Van Suns-?" *slap* Shut up, that was literally sarcasm. Wylan's story and latter fate begins because of a music conservatory, and music really played such a big part in his own story as well as his story with Jesper (ehem, piano incident). Also, bit of a fun fact, Apollo is supposedly the creator of the flute so there you go. Another literal thing is that he created a fake plague to help Kaz.
Nina: Hecate, Goddess of the dead's souls, witchcraft and divination. (Matthias would be so happy for the whole witchcraft thing). I don't think I have to elaborate on this one, but just a reminder that Nina can in fact control dead bodies.
Matthias: Hestia, Goddess of the hearth, fire and of the right ordering of domesticity and the family. *Introduces really gut-wrenching line from chapter 40 of Crooked Kingdom about how he finally could go back home*. I know it's kinda ironic that Matthias is from an icy country and Hestia is the Goddess of the fire, but no one said this was a perfect analysis (do I look like Rick Riordan to you?). Matthias was all about family values and homeland really, even if they meant different things at the beginning and at the end of Matthias' story. First it was his bio family, whose death ignited his hatred for the Grisha and his home was Fjerda. But in the end, the Crows became his family, the family he gave his life for, the same way Nina became his home.

Dance With Me
Summary: Nina forces you to come to a ball with her, and soon finds out why you didn’t want to be there in the first place.
Nina Zenik x fem!Kostyk!Reader
Warnings: Stressful social setting
Note: In this, pretend Nina never went to Fjerda in KoS. This is a little before those events, but definitely after Nikolai renounced his title as Sturmhond. And you’re a Durast, just so you know. And slightly neurodivergent. Very slightly.
———
You were quietly minding your own business at the Little Palace, helping some younger Fabrikators with their abilities. Your teacher had assigned them to you earlier that week, knowing you could help them as much as possible, with your never-ending patience and calming demeanour.
All of a sudden, Nina burst into the room, frightening you and one of the other children, who accidentally threw the metal ball he was practising with at you with his power.
“Saints alive-“ you wheezed, holding your side where the object had collided with you. “Um- why don’t you go there in the corner and practise hand movements, hm?”
“Sorry, Y/n…” the boy said sheepishly. You smiled and patted his head before he ran off to join his friends on the other side of the room.
“Nina,” you breathed out, looking at her practically vibrating with excitement. “What was so important that you had to burst in so…loudly?”
She was clutching a letter in her hands and squealed, “Nikolai’s planned a ball for absolutely no reason!”
“Lovely for you,” you smiled and kissed her forehead. “Forgive my asking, but…what does that have to do with me?”
“He’s invited you, me, Tamar, Nadia, Zoya, and the others, so you have got to come with me!” She giggled.
Your heart dropped to your knees at the very thought of going to a ball, where people danced expertly, knew how to woo a lady, and definitely didn’t step on their partner’s toes while waltzing.
“Um…my love, may we discuss this a little later?” You asked, looking around the room, any where but at her.
“Of course,” she smiled. “Is everything okay?”
“Yes, yes,” you smiled. “It’s all good, just…I need to think it over.”
“Lovely!” She clapped her hands joyfully and pressed a gentle kiss to your lips, which was punctuated by a dragged out ‘ew’ from the children.
Nina laughed and nodded, mouthing, ‘I should go,’ before squeezing your hand and going out.
Later that evening, you were, again, minding your own business after having returned to the royal palace, when she burst in yet again, making you almost upset your ink bottle over the paper you were writing on.
“My-my dear, if you could just knock before entering it would be far better-“ you laughed nervously, pushing your chair back as she planted herself on your lap. Your arms instinctively wrapped around her waist, and you leaned up, kissing her cheek before smiling.
“Did you think it over?” She asked, leaning into your touch as you rested your cheek against the back of her shoulder.
You sighed, “I did, and I don’t- I don’t think I want to go…”
“Why not?” She asked, and you could practically hear her pout. “It’s a lovely evening to go for! There’s dancing, there’s music, there’s food…”
“Um…I think we can get that at any posh place in the city,” you admitted. “I just…I don’t want to go.”
“But darling, please,” she whined, turning so that her lower back rested against the edge of your table. Her arms looped around your neck as her soft green eyes met your e/c ones. “I really want to go with you! It’s been ages since we last went to an event together!”
You sighed and gave in, “Alright, but I will not dance.”
She gasped, “But why?!”
“I draw the line at dancing, my dear,” you said. “Please let it be enough that I agree to go.”
She decided not to press the matter further, and smiled brightly, her eyes grinning and her entire face lighting up. “I love you,” she said, before leaning down to kiss your lips gently.
“And I, you,” you said softly, smiling against her lips.
—Time Skip—
The day of the ball came faster than expected, and you were a nervous wreck as you and the others got ready for the festivities.
“What’s got you all jittery, Y/n?” Zoya asked, raising an eyebrow. “You’re trembling like a leaf in a storm.”
“Zoya, have you met Y/n?” Nadia laughed. “She’s like her brother, she hates social gatherings like these.”
“So she’s a little baby,” Tamar joked, poking you in the side playfully.
“Don’t be mean, now,” Genya chided them all as she tailored her hair a little redder. “Y/n just finds them mildly uncomfortable. As does David.”
“No, no, I agree with them,” you nodded, pulling on the jacket which went with your suit. “I hate social gatherings.”
“Nina, how is it that you fell in love with her?” Zoya laughed, braiding her hair so she could twist it into a bun. “She’s the exact opposite of you.”
“What can I say? I’ve got a thing for the quiet ones,” Nina giggled, coming over and kissing your cheek. “Lace me up, would you darling?”
You were already fidgety, and thankfully, lacing up your girlfriend’s dress helped quite a bit. “I was bullied into attending,” you admitted, earning a laugh from all of them. Confusion shadowed over your face as you frowned a little, “Why is that funny?”
“It just is, N/n,” Tamar ruffled your hair, earning a disgruntled noise from you as you gently pushed her hand away.
“I will…um…check on the boys,” you nodded, “Yes, I’ll go check on them.”
You hurried out of the room before anyone could stop you, counting your steps as you went to Nikolai’s massive dressing room, knowing it was precisely 203 steps away from Zoya’s, where you had been a moment ago.
You entered after knocking, and sat down on a small chair right beside a mirror.
“We’re the girls teasing you again?” Nikolai chuckled as he put his white shirt on. “Or were you just coming to visit?”
“I don’t know what they were doing, actually,” you frowned. “But I do know I don’t want to go to the ball.”
“Then don’t go,” Tolya said as if it was he most obvious thing in the world as he combed his hair back. Ball or not, he was still dressing as sharply as a soldier.
“You see, as a fact, Nina does not really enjoy missing any social gathering,” you said. “And I, on the other hand, would rather die than go to one.”
Nikolai began to wear his tie and laughed, “Am I really such a nuisance for organising these gatherings that you would rather die than attend them?”
“No, I-“ you paused, analysing his statement. “Was that a joke?”
“Yes, Y/n, yes it was,” he grinned, also ruffling your hair.
“Why does everyone keep doing that?” You mumbled, fixing your hair again.
“I agree with my sister,” came your brother’s similarly quiet voice. “I cannot say I enjoy being at such big events.”
“I’d rather be building something,” you nodded, to which David made a noise of agreement.
“Well, I can’t say you can just disagree with what Nina and Genya have said,” Tolya shrugged. “I have seen the two of them. They almost exist only for gatherings.”
“Y/n, you’ve worn something far too drab, did the others say nothing about it?” Nikolai said, looking at you.
You looked at your plain black suit, neatly pressed and creaseless. “What’s wrong with this? It’s my best suit!”
“For a funeral, maybe,” Interjected Tolya.
“Now you both are bullying me,” you frowned.
Nikolai went to his closet and pulled out a suit which looked far richer than yours, which had a white shirt, white pants, and a coat which had gold buttons all the way down the front. A thick gold border went down the length of it, and to finish it with a slightly feminine look, a delicate, spidery pattern of lace was embroidered onto the cuffs.
“Go on and try it,” Nikolai suggested, giving you the hanger on which it was kept and pushing you towards the changing screen.
You went in and tried it on, it fitting perfectly. The thick, almost kefta-like material of the coat felt nice under your fidgety fingertips, and the soft silk fabric of the shirt was welcoming on your skin. You’d never felt more confident than you did then, standing in a King’s attire.
“Let’s see how it looks, my friend!” Called out Tolya. You emerged from behind the screen, feeling your confidence give a little way for some amount of shyness at the attention.
“Damn,” Nikolai said. “I’d say Nina is going to be very happy.”
“She does say she loves me in blue,” you admitted, your hands already fidgeting with the hem of the coat, feeling the slightly prickly gold border against your fingertips.
“If you like the suit, you can keep it,” Nikolai grinned. “You look absolutely stunning in it. I have to say, you pull it off better than I do.”
You caught your brother’s eye, and he hummed in acknowledgment, nodding his head slightly. You both, even as children, had almost always communicated like this. With subtle hand gestures, eye movements, and nods.
After a little while of chatting, Nikolai exhaled sharply as he dusted off his coat sleeves. “Right, I will be on my way down to welcome the guests.”
“Hooray…” you said, with little enthusiasm. “That was sarcasm, by the way.”
“Well done,” Tolya patted you on the back. “It’s practically impossible to tell.”
You frowned, “Actually, I was being rather obvious about it…”
The giant laughed and led you out, putting an arm around your shoulder. “Never change, Y/n.”
“Um, I’ll go find Nina,” you nodded and walked off.
When your girlfriend saw you in the suit, her jaw dropped. As did everyone else’s in the room.
“I love how you look in blue,” grinned Nina as she ran her hands down your shoulders to your waist.
You smiled slightly and whispered a thank you, blushing a bright red.
“Guys, it’s nearly eight o clock, the guests should be arriving now,” admitted Nadia as she looked at the clock on the wall. She looked at both you and Nina, adding, “Now stop making moon eyes at each other and get your backsides downstairs.”
You nodded as Nina took you by the hand, leading you downstairs, while the others followed suit.
“I’m nervous,” you said.
“Don’t be,” giggled Nina. “It’ll be fun, I promise.”
“I hope that wasn’t a joke…” you mumbled.
The ballroom filled up pretty fast, with the soft music of the band floating through the crowd. Men danced with their ladies in graceful two-steps, otherwise they whirled around in a fast-paced foxtrot. You stood at the end of the dance floor, watching closely while Nina and Nadia danced together, laughing hysterically.
There were too many people, though. Your skin crawled at the sudden thickness of the air, and you couldn’t really process the whole situation entirely. Sounds mashed together, the scent of perfume was choking, and the hum of people talking was getting annoying.
You were immediately broken out of your little freak-out when Nina caught your hand.
“Why is my gorgeous girlfriend standing here, alone, not dancing?” She asked, leaning up to kiss your lips.
“I…” you shook your head and whispered, “I’m just tired.”
“Hm…” she hummed in thought, trying to figure out what was wrong. “Do you mind telling me why you don’t want to dance with me?”
You felt your cheeks burn with embarrassment as you quietly replied, “I don’t know how to dance…”
Her eyes lit up as she held your face in her hands, and a smile tugged at her lips as she chuckled, “Was that all? You could’ve asked me to teach you!”
“I didn’t know how to ask…” you replied sheepishly.
She pulled you onto the dance floor where fewer people were swaying together, and she said, “Put your hand on my waist and hold the other,”
You did just so, and she smiled before guiding you towards doing a box step. You marvelled at how lovely a teacher she was, focusing solely on her voice.
“One, two, three, four, five, six,” you muttered under your breath. Nina laughed and squeezed your hand with hers, trying not to wince when you stepped on her toes with your hard leather shoes.
As the evening ended, you both collapsed into bed, tired for different reasons after having changed int more comfortable attire.
“You stepped more on my feet than you did the floor,” she chuckled.
“I will have you know that I was on beat,” you said. “You had it coming.”
“Well…you weren’t bad,” she nodded. “I must admit.”
You pulled her atop you and hugged her close, whispering, “Thank you for teaching me,”
“No problem, my love,” Nina replied, kissing your cheek. “It’s been a long night…” she sighed, sinking further into your touch.
“We should get some sleep,” you replied, tracing shapes on her back with your fingertips.
So there you both lay together, seeing comfort in each others embrace as the night went by, with its dark blue sky speckled with stars, and the wind blowing silently through the trees in the garden below.

I hope you enjoyed this one! Feel free to request!

Extract of my SoC fanfic
I love this scene, and I love Theodora and Wylan, they are cutie pies. For context: Theodora, my OC, knew Wylan beforehand because she was indentured to Gallaghan Geller (another OC who we hate), who belongs to the merchant council with Jan Van Eck (we also hate). Wylan and her met one night and I love the scene, it's so wholesome, I adore Wylan fr, he is such an important character for me.
Tumblr media
They had met one night. Wylan had been told by his father to “not be a bother.” Geller had given him one look and told him to “explore the house” Wylan was absolutely marveled by it: big marble stairs, a beautiful piano in the living room, wooden floors which shone brightly. He took care of going to every room he could find, not caring about being too intrusive, after all if he returned to his father before they were ready, he would probably scold him.
And then he stumbled into a room at the end of a hall, it was dark, and he was under the impression that it would be locked, but it wasn’t, he opened the door slowly, it creaked after him.
The room smelt of wood, but also paint, burnt metals: it was a workshop. It was fairly different from the other places at the house, starting by the fact that the windows had metal bars in front of them. Wylan got shivers down his spine, somewhat he felt like he wasn’t supposed to be there. He was going to leave, but then he saw her.
In a corner of the room, a big mane of red hair shone under what little light came from the window.
“Who’s there?” A voice spoke, soft, thick with an accent Wylan couldn’t recognize.
“Wylan…Wylan Van Eck.” His voice trembled.
The girl stood up from her bed, a small mattress on the floor with two pillows and a blanket.
She walked closer to him, Wylan could now notice her hands were tied, thick handcuffs around her wrists.
“You’re Van Eck’s son?”
Wylan nodded. The girl couldn’t have been older than him.
“Mister Geller mentions him sometimes.” She then stopped talking and looked at him shyly. “Have you come to fetch me? Does…Is Mister Geller asking for me?”
Her voice was heavy, suddenly distraught. Wylan stuttered.
“N…no, no.” He then looked behind him back to the hallway. “I am sorry, I was just exploring the house.”
Her face showed relief as she looked down and nodded. Wylan wanted to leave, feeling like he was in trouble, but he also didn’t want to leave the girl there.
“What’s your name?”
“Theodora.” She looked at Wylan, she knew that he was confused. “I am Mister Geller’s Fabrikator, I work for the Geller family.”
Her explanation sounded rehearsed, as if she had to explain that to anyone who stumbled with her.
“You’re Grisha.” Wylan’s eyes went wide with wonder. He would’ve loved to ask her to show him something, but the girl was hand tied…he shuddered at the thought, the Grisha his father had at home were treated a bit better…but well, they were basically slaves anyway.
Theodora could notice that he looked at her hands with fascination, stopping when noticing that they were tied. She seemed to be embarrassed by it. Wylan stopped looking at her tied hands and got into the room a bit, if only to pretend he was interested in something else.
He noticed in the center table, a box. Inside it, some crystals would cast glimpses of light when hit with the moonlight that came from the barred window.
Wylan couldn’t contain his curiosity, he timidly walked up to it and pointed to it before taking it.
“May I?”
Theodora nodded. She then practically hears Geller’s harsh words in her head: “Speak up when being spoken to.”
“Yes. Of course.”
Wylan grabbed the object, which he now noticed was a music box. It seemed to have a little gold pipe in the middle, like a coil. Around the coil-like object, which had a sort of match on the center, delicate and thin pieces of a silver material held various pieces of crystal around it. Theodora smiled a bit at the boy, he seemed to be entranced with the object, paying more attention to it than Gallaghan to any object she had crafted before.
“Is the coil in the middle made to hold a lit match in the center?” He asked enthusiastically.
Theo smiled and nodded. She opened a drawer under the table and grabbed a match.
“Here.” She passed the match to Wylan, nodding encouragingly for him to light it up, seeing as with her tied hands, she couldn’t do it herself. Wylan did so carefully. The whole thing was so well crafted that the shape the coil-like gold pipe had, held the light inside it, only using it to light up the crystals, which made reflections all around them.
“It’s beautiful…” He gasped.
“Thanks.” She whispered. “But it’s defective.”
“How come?” He asked.
“It’s supposed to remain in its spot, but when I wind it up and the music begins…” She did so to show him. And when the music box began to play the song, with a soft sound, the crystals inside began to move around, casting reflections all around the room, circling around, moving the light all around them… It was absolutely mesmerizing. How could someone consider such an artifact to be defective? It was perfect, beautiful.
“I think it makes it better.” Wylan said. He then looked at the music box again. “And the song…is it, it’s…”
“A Kaelish song, you know it?”
Wylan nodded. It seemed as if this was the best thing that happened to him all week, little did Theo know, it actually was.
“How did you manage to create a shape that was so perfect to keep the match burning inside the coil–”
“Wylan!” A voice interrupted him and they both looked at the door in fear.
Van Eck’s face almost fell when he saw his son speaking to the indentured Grisha inside her workshop. Theodora looked at her feet as she shuffled a bit from Wylan, what was she even thinking? This is Van Eck’s son, a well known Councilman.
“It's time to leave.” Van Eck said harshly.
Wylan walked slowly towards the door. Before he could wander too far from the table, Theodora’s voice was heard, a timid whisper.
“Take it.”
Van Eck’s contemptuous face only got worse.
“It’s a gift from Mr. Geller.” She lied.
At this Van Eck expected for Wylan to receive it, which he did so with a shy smile.
“Thank you–”
“You can thank Gallaghan when we get to the front door.”
Without more words they left, Van Eck slamming the door on his way out, leaving Theodora in darkness. The moment the door closed, she could hear hushed scolding towards Wylan about him wandering towards the workshop and mingling with the staff.
After that encounter, every time Theodora heard about Van Eck and Wylan was brought up, she made sure to listen, wondering how the boy was.
Which is why, even though she didn’t really owe him the secrecy of his identity, it still hurt that he looked at her with those betrayed eyes.
How times have changed, she thought, neither of us live in a wealthy mansion anymore, and I would not craft a music box even if they begged me.
And then a hint of panic built up inside her, because maybe Wylan thought she had disclosed his inability to read, and she knows, by the way it was spoken by Van Eck, that that would be like him disclosing to them all how Geller treated her, or how tamed she was when she worked for Gallaghan.

OG Post (Here)
I have a couple other ideas;
Heartrenders controlling a volcra (Here)
Volcra kill because they remember the want (Here read tags as well)
Specifically with the body horror aspect I would love to see it more casually brought up, I know I went extreme in the original post( and ended up going extreme here too)
Tailors who's skin is warm and soft always, their beauty a little too blinding, they never keep a steady appearance as they appeal to what the viewer wants most, in order to gain their trust. Sometimes that backfires, someone wants to see scars, or fangs, or a monster, and what Grisha to better satisfy that then one that can be what they need. They can make wounds or hide them, they can create scars, they can give someone who wants to hurt, to see others hurting what they want and no one has to suffer, do they?
Squallers who offer comfort through the constant feeling of a warm breeze surrounding someone, the soft sound of wind through chimes or leaves. They can control music just as much, crafting songs and sounds from instruments that never existed in the first place. They become sirens, pulling people in, deafening them with sounds before they even realize they can't hear beyond the wind whistling in their ears.
Tidemakers who's body's move fluidly, their ability to dance, their flexibility is unmatched, they move like water and most feel refreshed after they talk to them. They can bend and twist their bodies so easy, it's muscle memory to show others, to force the bones to bend and break under the pressure from them and their water. Some spend too much time with it, they become similar to a deep sea creature, unblinking and adapted in ways others could never live with.
Inferni who are always the perfect temperature, who can keep a group calm, lowing their body temperatures so they're forced to settle, they can take heat as easily as they can bestow it. The can keep the others comforted, complacent on missions with only each other for comfort; heat fills the space, heat can be the phantom memories of those gone. If there is a death on the field, often an Inferni will keep the bodies warm, to not spook others. They mimic the body heat of someone next to you, a phantom partner or lover in all the wrong ways.
Heartrenders who can manipulate the chemicals and neurotransmitters in a persons brain, even if they don't know what they're doing, people always feeling happier around them, feeling calm, feeling safe. Too much of a good thing is equal to bad. They become addicted like anything else, they become desperate, even the heartrender cannot control it, and often they succumb to those they subdued if not kept safely away from others, or if they use their powers sparingly.
Fabirkators that can breathe life into inanimate things. They create toys, things to comfort young Grisha, to comfort anyone who has lost something. If they focus, if they bargain and find help in other grisha, they can bring a loved one back for a moment, they can twist and warp the corpses before burial, to give comfort to those grieving, to take from those already dead. They often forget, creating things from nothing can lead to viewing everything as a tool. How can things be combined, how can they be taken apart. Fabrikators who pull at flesh a little too easily, after all it's only components, and those that volunteer, well they never have a reason to fear their friend who made their teddy bears dance when they were scared.
Amplifiers that find themselves connected to Grisha in ways they cannot explain. They can sense pain, fear, happiness, they can sometimes sense before the Grisha know themsevles, the whispers of power from under small fingers. They push too much into some, exhausting their power when they pull back, leaving material for the Fabrikators to take apart. Whispers of Grisha killing their own is what the Amplifiers bring. They find the ability to comfort, showing Grisha that their powers are not to be feared, that they can stop too much power leaking out. Small hands reaching for them, crying out for parents who cannot stay, the amplifiers find themselves drowning in both grisha power and human emotions no heartrender can hope to break the bond of.
Sun Summoners, Lightbringers, who always shine. They excel in anything they try, learning, power control, it comes easy to them because praise, love is light. Grisha find themselves blinded, the way sunlight is too warm, the way light trickles into the cracks. Even those that hate find themselves warmed and drawn into the light, moths to a flame. They can blind as easily as they comfort, creating blisters and welts, sunburns and heatstroke, photosensitivity can burn into someone's eyes and brain and leaving them with a body that jerks beyond their command.
Shadow Summoners, Shadowbringers, that keep those that are forgotten. They pull those that are lesser, Grisha who can't keep up with the training, grisha who's powers do not follow the strict pathways they army wants. They take those that slip through the cracks. They spends hours training in pitch black until themselves and the grisha no longer need their sight to kill. They use the shadows to move around, creating shapes and monsters, creatures and enemies not only to scare but to protect each other. They take the absence of light and create the world within it. They plunge anyone who goes against them in the lack of, sensory deprivation at it's strongest. They either slowly let the senses come back or flood them with the removal of shadow all at once, neither are survivable

BOOK: Jesper Fahey (Six of Crows) - ADHD & Wylan Van Eyck (Six of Crows) - Dyslexia
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Illustrations by Bon Orthwick for the Crooked Kingdom special edition.
Jesper Fahey is a Zemeni-born sharpshooter, a member of the Dregs, and one of the protagonists of the Six of Crows duology. He is also a Fabrikator.
Jesper is restless and often anxious, and uses gunfights and gambling to distract himself with an adrenaline rush. When he feels overwhelmed he rests his hands on his pistols to keep from fidgeting. Some of his recklessness likely comes from not using his Fabrikator powers. Jesper's impulsiveness sometimes leads him to make poor decisions, which makes him feel guilty and leads to low self-esteem. [wiki]
Wylan Van Eck is the son of Jan Van Eck and is also one of the protagonists of the Six of Crows duology. He joins the team rescuing Bo Yul-Bayur from the Ice Court because of his knowledge of demolitions and his use as a hostage in negotiating the reward.
Wylan has a curious, contemplative mind, often questioning how things function such as on Jesper's pistols and the Ice Court's aqueduct system. He prefers music and numbers to words, as he cannot read or write because of his dyslexia. The Long-Awaited Dev Log 7
It's been a little bit! Let's catch up. First of all, I now have an amateurish little personal website! You can check that out here:
It'll probably improve over time. Anyway, I've been hard at work on the foundations of Flower Pot, as per usual. I remodeled the physics system again with much nicer collision resolution so that physics bodies slide off of each other, real smooth-like.
Tumblr media
Here's where most of the interesting stuff is happening in code:
Tumblr media
Basically, I'm tracking collision normals and collision depth and applying an acceleration to each body according to the magnitude and dot products of their relative velocities. I much prefer working in vectors over angles, they're more intuitive to me. Maybe this stuff is just obvious to long-time AAA developers, but I'm basically teaching myself all of this as I go. I'm letting myself be just a little proud of it.
I also totally reworked the tentacle code using an implementation of FABRIK written by yours truly. My existing algorithm, which I wrote from scratch, was surprisingly close to this one, but missed a couple of important steps and had unnecessary special cases. I actually did all of this weeks ago... I'm trying not to be too embarrassed about it, but development has been very uneven. It's sort of going around in circles. Still, I love this project too much to get too-too discouraged about progress. Hopefully as soon as later this week I'll have the player character movement finally working!?? But don't get your hopes too far up. As a treat to tide you all over-- if you don't know already, I'm also an aspiring quasi-professional musician! Lately I've been writing music with this game in the back of my head-- I wouldn't call it a soundtrack yet so much as audio doodling, but maybe it'll still interesting you.

Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue Review (PlayStation 5)
Tumblr media
For this Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue Review, Play as Poppy, Branch, and more of your favorite DreamWorks Trolls as you explore, smash, dance, and battle your way towards rescuing the Troll Kingdom from a melodic mastermind who’s trying to alter the Trolls’ musical harmony!
Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue Review Pros:
- Decent graphics that look like the film. - 2.93GB download size. - Platinum trophy. - You get the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game. - 3 save slots. - Action platformer gameplay. - A full 3D world with 360-degree camera control. - Locations are very open and do let you roam as you wish. - Many hidden areas and bonus crates. - Earn new abilities as you play like swirling your head around to damage crates and enemies, get wall jumping, etc. - Big boss-like encounters. - Gems are everywhere and carry over between levels. - Characters can be chosen or you can edit and create your own. - Local multiplayer support with up to 4 characters. - Two playable characters are from the new film that is coming soon. - Constant checkpoints. - Accessible easy-to-learn controls. - You get a good amount of health and can pick up health parts at a level. - Mini-games play a part in rhythm action sequences. - A collection of the enemies you face fills in as you take out one for the first time. - As you go through a location you come across safe areas that act like a hub, before you can use it all enemies have to be cleared out and the DJ decks activated. - Trader trolls are in safe areas and here you can buy costumes for your character. - A wardrobe is in the safe area and is where you go to edit your character. - Hidden Golden Troll statues are traded for higher-end customisation items at the trader troll. - The hot air balloon in safe areas lets you fast-travel to unlocked areas. - Kids will love the open space and the way they can progress how they want or not, Do as they want and still have fun. Dreamworks Trolls Remix Rescue Review Cons: - Cannot rebind controls. - The music sounds the same in every location and if it does change then it loops so much that you learn to hate it. - The platforming is not great. - Jumping feels spongy and loose. - You never know when you have hit a checkpoint. - Not all the cutscenes can be skipped or fast-forwarded. - The gems you need to collect are loose and do everything in your power to avoid being picked up. - Gems disappear really quickly after dropping. - The combat is boring and simple. - At many points of a location, the game takes control of the camera and it is not great and jarring, it then feels like you are wrestling with the camera during it. - You get very little guidance and progression feels more like you stumble upon it rather than scripted. Happy Next Fest! I decided this year to do something I never do and let myself get hype for some upcoming games! Over the past few days, I tried out twelve Next Fest demos - some of them weren't for me, but most were really promising, and I thought I would share the five games I tried which I am the most excited for, along with the notes I wrote immediately after playing each one.
(They're in alphabetical order, not ranked)
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood - THIS GAME IS SO DOPE I AM SO HYPE FOR THE FULL RELEASE!!! I was sad when the demo ended! It especially deserves a Let’s Play - let’s see if I will be brave enough to read aloud the sexually explicit dialogue when the time comes.
In Stars and Time - “Guy who speaks exclusively in puns” is not my favorite archetype already but to make them the FREAKIN PROTAGONIST… That aside, this was quite the charming introduction. Cool character designs and music. The rock-paper-scissors combat is so goofily literal that it circles back around to awesome, and I am a sucker and a half for a time loop.
Saltsea Chronicles - Very cute but I expected as much from Die Gute Fabrik. Has the same casual but profoundly human slice-of-life storytelling as Mutazione, and I see a lot of replayability potential in choosing which characters go on missions and the conflict resolution mechanics.
Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical - I would rather play this game than see most of what is currently on Broadway (meant as a jab at those jukebox biopics of pop musicians, not anything actually original). The way the demo was structured might have spoiled some story beats, but I don’t know how else they could have done it; it was a sampler of musical numbers, and from it seems these musical numbers really drive the plot in a meaningful way! Awesome!
Verne: The Shape of Fantasy - Puzzles are just tricky enough, although I think the game could let you struggle a little longer before giving hints. The pixel art and voice acting is so nice.

Story-driven adventure game Saltsea Chronicles announced for PS5, Switch, and PC
Gematsu Source
Tumblr media
Die Gute Fabrik has announced choose your own adventure game Saltsea Chronicles for PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC (Steam). It will launch in 2023.
Here is an overview of the game, via its Steam page:
About
Saltsea Chronicles is a new story-driven adventure game from the award-winning indie studio Die Gute Fabrik (Mutazione, Sportsfriends).
Captain Maja’s misfit crew must heist their impounded ship and mount a rescue. Guide the crew across islands of a post-flood world known as ‘Saltsea’. Explore strange and wonderful communities, uncover a deep conspiracy, choose where to go and which crew members to investigate with, and chart a journey through twists and turns, difficulties and delights.
A Post-Flood World
Visit different island communities as you investigate the mystery at the heart of the game. Each built on pre-flood ruins—in beautiful and beguiling ways.
As you explore you will uncover different pathways through a rich and varied series of islands. This flooded world, betrayed by the so-called Hoarders, barely remembers a time before the Flood. They rebuilt on the ruins of what came before, and new talents and technologies took the place of the old. Many surprises await!
Choose Your Priorities
In Saltsea Chronicles you guide the entire crew through the story. As well as investigating the mystery of your captain’s disappearance, you will uncover secrets, create and resolve tensions between the crew, and add to your number as you meet others who ask to join you.
Each chapter, you pick which island to visit and who to send on the expedition. Your choices will unlock different content, develop relationships, and give you a chance to resolve (and create) tensions within the crew.
With a lightning-fast navigation system, you’re free to hop around the islands as you explore. Choose between short and snappy observations, or dig deep into conversations with your crewmate or the locals, exploring the islands across different times of day.
Uncover a Conspiracy
Was your captain kidnapped? Or did she leave of her own free will? Keep track of the mystery in Murl’s Log and collect records of your encounters as stickers in the Almanac.
Different playthroughs will take you to different islands, introduce different characters and have dramatic consequences for your crew. You can replay from any chapter and branch your save file to meet new crew members, explore different communities and trace alternative pathways through the rich and gripping story.
Themes
From an award-winning and diverse writersroom—with experience in Young Adult fiction, film, theatre, poetry, and gamesSaltsea Chronicles imagines a rich world where communities have rebuilt in the aftermath of disaster, creating a new society of connection, resilience and hope—but one still troubled by the universal questions of how to live together through conflict and change. This wide-reaching story game traces meaningful themes with humour, lightness of touch, and care.
Key Features
Distinctive Print-Inspired Art Style – A unique art style inspired by risograph print techniques brings a storybook aesthetic to the fantasy-tinged world of Saltsea Chronicles, brought to life with beautiful bespoke animation.
Try Your Hand at Spoils – Spoils is a trick-taking card game from the world of Saltsea Chronicles. Play cards with each local community, but watch out—some islands have their own house rules!
An Original Soundtrack by Eli Rainsberry – IGF-nominated composer and sound artist Eli Rainsberry (No Longer Home, A Monster’s Expedition) presents a musically hybrid score and soundscape guided by the spaces and characters of Saltsea Chronicles.
Navigate the Drama as Well as the Seas – Tensions between crew members are represented by Issues, small ‘relationships quests’ you can track, resolve, or, sometimes, just have to leave unsolved.
