I’m sure that this is not a hot take and that a lot of people feel the same way but like

The question “does it have spice?!đŸŒ¶ïžđŸ”„â€ makes me want to jump off a cliff. I’m out here looking for gothic book recommendations on Reddit, tumblr, and goodreads and WHY is this the first question so many people ask 😭
Look, I love erotica as much as the next person but come on. There have got to be other things that matter when recommending books or choosing to pick one up, my GOD.

OKAY, after watching (almost) all the Jane Eyre adaptations, I STILL THINK the 2011 version with Mia and Michael is the absolute best (and dare I say, my favourite film of all time???). They just embody the characters perfectly and when I reread the novel their faces are in my head :-) The score is beautiful, the scenery is beautiful, their expressions and the way they act together is beautiful, aaaaaaaaa!!!! I'm watching the 2006 mini-series now and ew. I'm not a fan of the way they've taken creative liberties with the script, it's so unlike the novel. I prefer adaptations to be faithful to the original source but I guess it doesn't have to be. But Rochester here is just so ew. He should have SOME redeeming qualities but he has none, he's gross. There, that's my critique. ok bye :-P -> But really, just because Rochester is supposed to be grumpy and byronic doesn't mean he has to lack CLASS?!!? Michael's Rochester is still elegant and somewhat respectful (?) even in the beginning scenes with Mia, but here in the 2006 version when Rochester meets Jane for the first time and she ""bewitches"" his horse, HE SAYS "LEAVE ME ALONE, WITCH" ??? HELLO??? THE REAL ROCHESTER WOULD NEVER SAY THAT??? "You bewitched my horse" is a cheeky, silly, half-serious-mostly-joking phrase, but straight-up calling the girl a "WITCH" is just rude and unlike real Rochester??? Yes, he's a grumpy piece of crap but he wouldn't straight up say those things to a girl he's never met, ughhhh.
I have nothing to say about this Jane because she's cute and I think it's a little easier to do a good Jane than a good Rochester. Of all the adaptations I've watched, I've never really had complaints about Jane...And the 1997 adaptation with Ciaran Hinds and Samantha Morton was interesting...Ciaran's Rochester was kinda freaky. Which is also kinda accurate. He definitely doesn't try to be too handsome, which many of the other Rochesters do. The 1983 one with Timothy Dalton is really nice!!! I think it's my second favourite :-) Anyways. So yeah, basically I've been hyper-fixating on this damn novel, which is good because I needed something to keep me occupied this winter :-] And Jane Eyre is so wintery-themed!
Okay, oops actually, I see that the 2006 one is a modern-ish different take and that's okay, it's not bad, I'm just a mega-hater. BUT ALSO, HE KEEPS CALLING HER "WITCH" IN PLACE OF ALL THE OTHER PET-NAMES BOOK ROCHESTER GIVES HER like WITCH IS NOT THE SAME AS "fairy" or "imp" ?!?!?
Ok I've watched it for reals, it's not great, and it SUCKS, I was right, ew. They've somehow managed to ruin all the most beautiful quotes what the heck bye
ALSO, the 2011 version is somehow the only version that actually maintains the feminist aspects of the novel instead of cutting it out entirely

In Defense of Wuthering Heights
This is not an “I can make him worse” book. It’s a “we can make each other better in the face of tremendous pressure to do otherwise” book. I promise.
I’ve already written extensively about my love for Charlotte Brontë’s Villette and while I love lots of other BrontĂ« books with all my heart, what I really want to do tonight is try to make you fall in love with Emily’s Wuthering Heights (generally the most divisive BrontĂ« novel among modern readers) the way that I did.
The thing that a lot of people don’t know which I really think ought to be printed on all the dust jackets is that the BrontĂ« sisters were the daughters of a revered. They were PKs and it totally shows.
So Wuthering Heights is not a romance; it’s a family tragedy. Specifically, it’s an astonishingly hopeful book about generational trauma.
Heathcliff is Mr. Earnshaw’s bastard son. This is never explicitly stated, but it is implied so heavily that it might as well be. To boot, Mr. Earnshaw favors Heathcliff over his legitimate son, Hindley. When Mr. Earnshaw dies, Heathcliff is immediately and violently cast out of the family and forced into servitude. Mr. Earnshaw’s hidden infidelity is Wuthering Heights’s original sin.
Of course, Cathy and Heathcliff love each other, but it’s a violent and destructive like-recognizes-like kind of love between two people who, on the one hand, absolutely should not be together and, on the other, totally deserve each other. They’re capital T Tragic and capital R romantic: co-dependent, sharp-toothed sibling-lovers who don’t understand their own relationship as kids because their father lied to them. That lack of understanding follows them into adulthood; they don’t really know how to make sense of what they feel for one another, but boy do they feel it.
Cathy tells Nellie “I am Heathcliff” and “He’s more myself than I am” and “whatever souls are made of, his and mine are the same,” and it’s half a reaction to the fact that one of her brothers (Hindley) has cast her other brother (Heathcliff) out of the family with a vengeance and half a statement of the fact that although she doesn’t know what Heathcliff is to her, she doesn’t know how to live without him. And while Cathy’s love for Heathcliff definitely fills romantic roles once they’re adults, it’s doesn’t really read as sexual. To use Lewis’s parlance: it’s not eros/gift-love, but rather need-love in the most emphatic sense. It’s storge. Actually, it’s really posessive storge that thinks it’s eros. Hence the problem.
From the other side, Heathcliff is an outsider from the moment he enters the story. He’s an intruder and a presumed bastard. He’s coded as non-white, maybe Romani or similar. (Probably not actually African-black, but kudos to that one movie for at least making the attempt.) He’s
probably kind of a psychopath in that he displays cruelty to animals and then later on becomes a charismatic, manipulative monster. You can make a nature vs. nurture argument—Heathcliff is definitely on the receiving end of a lot of cruelty—but there’s also something Off about him and that too is othering. And after Mr. Earnshaw dies, Cathy is the one person who still loves him.
But of course, they can’t actually marry. On and off the page, that simply cannot be. Heathcliff runs away, Cathy marries Edgar Linton. They hurt each other badly in the process. Neither Heathcliff nor Cathy can escape the harm that Mr. Earnshaw began and Hindley perpetuated. Cathy dies, Heathcliff marries Isabella, and then things get really interesting.
Because the beating heart of Wuthering Heights, the place where you can profoundly see the fingerprints of the reverend’s daughter, is in the third generation. Cathy and Heathcliff devour each other in life and in death, but the children survive. They forgive. The patriarch died without knowing what he had wrought on his children, the second generation died in anguish, but the third makes it out. Or at least Hareton and Cathy II do.
Cathy’s daughter is named for her mother. Heathcliff’s son by Isabella Linton is named Linton Heathcliff. Heathcliff forces Hareton, Hindley’s son and the only one among the third generation not named for his parents, to live in the same debasement that Hindley once forced on him: he denies Hareton any education and forces him into servitude while simultaneously courting his admiration. In essence, Cathy and Heathcliff implore the next generation to go on living their parents’ tragedy and it. Doesn’t. Work.
Heathcliff tries to force them both into awful situations in which they must act out his trauma, his revenge, to go on perpetuating the pain and bitterness. And at first, it looks like they’re going to play their parts. For a time, they’re as awful to each other as everyone else is.
But then they change. Hareton tries to stand up for Cathy II while she’s essentially being held captive as part of Heathcliff’s 12-Step Revenge Plot. Cathy teaches Hareton to read. She laughs at him, but when she realizes that she’s hurting his pride she apologizes and learns to be patient.
“I didn’t know you took my part,” she answered, drying her eyes; “and I was miserable and bitter at everybody; but now I thank you, and beg you to forgive me: what can I do besides?”
And after this, they both stand up to Heathcliff. They say, “This ends here. This far and no farther.” Heathcliff is their dragon and they face him together. And when everyone else is dead in grand, tragic fashion, Cathy II and Hareton are left living.
But it’s not just that Hareton and Cathy II survive. They specifically un-do the failings of the previous generations. There’s a kind of atonement to it. They’re honest with each other, unlike Mr. Earnshaw. Cathy recognizes Hareton’s humanity, something Hindley never did for Heathcliff. Hareton lets go of his bitterness and resentment, while Heathcliff let his fester into cruelty and Elaborate Revenge. Cathy II is willful, like her mother, but she is also kind. Hareton is proud, like his father, but he is also compassionate. They forgive each other, while Cathy and Heathcliff only ever held grudges.
At the beginning of the book, Cathy is dead and has explicitly not gone to heaven; with the BrontĂ«s, you’ve gotta take these things seriously. Cathy is not in heaven and Heathcliff is a monster and they both seem to be damned, but they do not succeed in damning their children. And in that (I would say because of that), even Cathy and Heathcliff find peace after death.
I also do think that the fact that the story is narrated by Lockwood (weirded out by all of this) and Nellie (unreliable, cares deeply about everyone involved) can make it difficult to see the redemptive arc in the story as clearly as we might if it had an omniscient narrator, or if, say Cathy II was narrating. We're presented the Cathy and Heathcliff love story as this great, horrible, compelling saga (and it absolutely is), but then the following generation can almost seem like a footnote. They're adapted out of most of the film adaptations. But they're the whole point!
I do get why Wuthering Heights just isn’t to some people’s taste. Really. Some people just don’t go for Big Romantic Family Tragedy and that’s fine. But too many people come to the BrontĂ«s looking for Jane Austen or Elizabeth Gaskell and that’s just. Wrong. You’ve gotta at least read Wuthering Heights on its own terms before deciding that you hate it (not directed at anyone specific on here, but I do know people irl...). And you really ought to read it with an eye towards Emily’s faith. It makes a world of difference.
TL;DR- There’s a beautiful, very Christian center to Wuthering Heights and it’s one of forgiveness instead of revenge and kindness instead of cruelty. It’s a book about people who are destroyed by the sins of their fathers and those that manage not to be. In a way, it’s almost a fairytale.

romance and shitttt
the idea of a lifelong partner, a spouse, a husband, a wife, a house, kids, domestic bliss and whatnot stresses me out and depresses me. i feel like wow, a spouse that will drive me away from my friends, my dreams and my independence. i love my friends my dreams and my independence. but the type of treatment i thought i liked within romantic relationships is very intimate, all the time, clingy stuff which really contradicts that.
in my previous relationship i was with someone i thought was perfect for me because he took care of all my needs. at first it was a sweet and fun relationship but due to this partner being so caring and attentive of me i grew codependent, and he grew codepdnent too i think. after breaking up i was devastated due to losing this familliarity and support system. but there was not much spark or whatever... he really really liked me and i thought i liked him but i dont think i truly did which is something i learnt when about 5/6 months after breaking up i started talking to someone else. this new person is not dependable, is unreliable and although he is kind and sweet he is not the most attentive person to go to with your problems. he is not a shoulder to cry on really and i always thought thats what romance is all about: a shoulder to cry on. and yet ive never had such fun with someone im romantically entagled with before. we are not in a relationship which is new to me but i like it because there is no musts and no expectations from either side. he cant expect impossible things from me as people often do, he cant make me feel inadequate and he never ever does. additionally i cant place expectations on him which makes everything chill and non personal. he doesnt do something? i dont take it personal because that just isnt what we have. i feel very at peace with this person in a sense that he just wouldnt be mad at me, he wouldnt nitpick my behaviour, he just wants to spend time with me whenever possible and share whatever we can share with no heavy expectations weighing us down.
and i have learnt a lot from this, first and foremost: patience! i was never patient with people before but now i feel patient and secure that everything is alright even with changes and even with time passing. I have learnt independence through this but also other things that happened in thee 10 months I have known him for- probably craziest 10 months of my life so far. I have learnt to be alone and keep busy and deal with my emotions without needing a romantic partner to complain to. i am closer with my friends and family and with myself because i finally changed my perception of what romantic partners are for!!!!! the media and also a lot of people make it seem like its your partners job to listen to you and heal you and constantly be there for you and yes of course that is true or whatever but thats not on your partner alone!!!!! romantic partners are for romance, for fun, for sex, for unspoken intimacy and understanding, for spoken understanding, for tension, for feelig good and beautiful and sexy and in love!!! not to take care of you. thinking back to whenever my ex boyfriend was incredibly caring of me i was very grateful and happy to have him, and i mourned that heavily when we broke up but i also ended up feeling helpless and small- enabled in my depression even!!!!
So having learnt that what I want from romance is fun and joy, because i deserve fun and joy! I deserve someone who has done the work as i have! One of the main attractive qualities this person has is he has done the work. The first time we met we talked a lot and in one of our conversations in the same breath he admitted all the pain his parents have caused him, how it was not their fault because they have hd difficult lives, how he forgives them but also has boundaries in place to protect himself. i was droolingggg like the maturity GAGGED ME i was so impressed idk... i just love meeting people who have reflected and admitted and done the work.. whereas some others wont even admit they need help and keep boasting about engaging in self destructive behaviour. i want fun and joy, someone who knows, someone who has done the work!
So thinking about a long term partner because i do want that, i think i would just love to have something like that forever maybe. Of course later on in life something more commited since now I feel like I am young and having fun and whilst i think to be totally in love with this person i also love the lack of commitment, my independance and whatnot even if i am not particularly getting with other people. I think i just want a carefree fun and joyous connection where we have fun, go out, chill, giggle while fucking and understand each other with no shame in being seen.
thoughts?!?!!

ALSO!! Gossip is not inherently immoral or bad!! Sick of reading these takes that reduce any discussion of relationship dynamics and expressions of care or interest in other humans lives down to “childish” or “obsessive” or “immature”! Gossip is incredibly natural for human beings, and it is not lost on me that something women (generally) do together is being delegitimized here! There is value in discussing other people’s lives! There is something beautiful about learning other people’s opinions on a shared piece of information (gossip)! How else are we meant to learn about our own true opinions on a common subject? Talking about Taylor’s 6 year relationship that ended is worth while!! I love and appreciate all the nuanced opinions I’m seeing all over my dash from people who have different lived experiences than me, but who all are thinking about the same set of info (gossip)!

Rough reiteration: "people will skip the Moor House plot to find out what really matters: will Jane and Rochester get together"
Are you sure about that? Skip the Moor House, where Jane finally finds what she was looking for her entire life: a family? Where she finds two sisters (and a brother) who treat her well and want to spend time with her? Who save her from certain death even before they know that they are related?
Sometimes you read something for a paper and think 'wow, the amatonormativity was strong in this one'. I'd gladly read more about Jane and the Rivers than hear a single word about Rochester

I think because Jane is christain and the book says bigamy is a sin she thinks shell go to hell so starving to her is better then hell its not just her morals
You're absolutely right. 💯 correct. I simply disagree with her reasoning and her priorities.
If she had left because he was abusing his wife and lying to her, I would be all for it. Starving on the streets will give you more peace of mind than staying with a man like that. Love it for you, babe.
But that was not her motivation.
She finds out that her boss/fiancée has been keeping his wife locked in the attic. She's fine with that part. He even lied to her face, gaslighting her about what she saw when she confronted him about the strange woman who came to her room in the night. She's fine with that part, too. Which is like.. weird. Keeping a woman locked in an attic and lying about it and gaslighting her were the things she should have been upset about. But they're not.
He explains that his marriage was arranged by his father when he was pretty young, that he knew nothing about this woman except what she looked like at parties, and that the mental illness that ran in her family was kept secret from him until after they were married. So this marriage literally means nothing to him. It's not like he was in love with her once and then grew tired of her and is trading her in for the newer model now. He was thrown into a business transaction and lied to at every step of the way. And now that he's met Jane and fallen in love with her he thinks this could actually be his chance for true love on his own terms. And even though Jane wants him too-- because she still wants him after finding out he keeps a whole person locked in the attic-- the simple fact that he has a wife, in any capacity, is preventing her from being with him.
And it's like "oh he was keeping her locked in the attic because he genuinely cared about her and didn't want her to get sent to an asylum where they would be inhumane to her" and sure. If that's what he thinks he's doing. But he doesn't really see her as human anyway. He describes her as an animal and worse. Which, i mean, given her Creole background, is deeply unsettling in and of itself. He also describes Jane as not human but he means it endearingly and that is also super concerning, cuz Jane is whiter than white so she's a perfect little magic fairy, not a dangerous animal.
So, he keeps Bertha locked in an attic so she won't get sent to an asylum where they will treat her inhumanely. But... like... was locking her in an attic and hiring one (singular) person to watch her 24/7 (not even treat her, just watch her) and denying her existence for 15 years any more humane? Or is that a backwards Christian idea about sympathy and righteousness?
I am saying all this as a queer WOC living in the U.S., where i have been effectively held hostage by christianity and christian ideology. My same-sex marriage could be struck down at any point by this government in the name of Christian values. My right to an abortion and bodily autonomy in general has already been taken away by it. Christian Europeans came to the Caribbean to colonize and exploit and convert my Puerto Rican and Dominican ancestors. So I'm coming at this from a place of justified resentment for Christian ideas of hell. Historically, what constitutes a sin and what you go to hell for versus what is good and just can be extremely fucked up and hypocritical in Christianity. It's okay for him to secretly keep a woman locked in the attic "for her own good" but it's not okay for him to marry a woman he loves. It is the correct thing for Jane to suffer, leaving her home to beg for food on the streets rather than stay with the man she still wants, because he happens to be married on paper. It's not a problem that he kept a woman locked in an attic, just that he tried to marry someone when he was already married.
Like jesus, Jane, just get the dick. You might as well.

Make Mr Rochester a vampire.
Make. Mr Rochester. A vampire.
I know I love vampires, I know, but are you telling me the man keeping his ex wife LOCKED IN THE ATTIC in a GOTHIC NOVEL and some poor lass just rocks up to work as a governess in that absolute shitshow isn’t ripe for ‘but what if we did a modern day retelling where he’s a fucking vampire’
The fact that I hate Jane Eyre as it is as a story isn’t not directly related to this.
im sick of classic lit retellings trying to make the characters better (read: more palatable by modern standards) i want retellings that find new and fascinating ways to make those bitches worse

a high school au
alex is a yapper. he yaps in math class. in bio. in ap us history with miss bankston (who only pretends not to love it he swears). he does not, however, yap during english third period. there's this boy with blue eyes who looked at him strangely when he said jane eyre was overrated.
alex hasn't spoken up since.
.
henry is shy. he knows that makes him come off a certain way to some people. it doesn't bother him. usually. he has his books, and bea, and pez.
"that alex is hysterical," pez says one day at lunch. what?
"oh, i know, what a riot. in maths the other day he—"
henry is confused. henry has literally never heard alex speak, except for that one time he made a devastating comment about jane eyre that had also given henry a lot to think about actually.
he hears alex laughing at the start of third period. henry feels speechless as he watches it happen.
he's spellbinding. he's beautiful.
he's clamming up the moment henry sits down.
oh, god. so it's him, then; it's henry. he's horrified to have had this sort of effect on someone, let alone someone as vibrant as alex. henry's shy, not cruel. and now he's feeling a bit wounded too.
he turns very purposely to look alex in the eye. brown eyes. very brown. framed by these obscenely long lashes as alex stares back, mouth open, not speaking. henry feels speechless all over again too, all from simply looking at alex.
oh.
*oh.*
now he thinks he's starting to get it.
"hi," henry blurts, before he can rush out of class and be sick in a bin in the hallway.
alex blinks. a shy smile forms. there are dimples. "hey," he says.
henry is blushing. he powers through. "so. err. what did you think about this week's reading?"
alex lights up. "ooh. so many things."
he pauses then, looking uncertain. "did you want to hear them?"
"please," says henry. "i'd like that very much."
.
alex is a yapper. he yaps through math, and bio, and every one of miss bankston's classes *obvi*ously. he yaps through english third period.
especially english third period.
the only time he doesn't yap is when he's too busy doing things like gazing at henry. sitting with henry on the bleachers, where the sun lights up his hair just right. nodding along to henry's passionate rants about poems.
watching henry eat something alex has brought them for lunch. eyeing the spot of sauce henry's missed.
"is there something on my face?" henry asks. "you keep staring."
"actually," says alex. he leans in.
they're both a little too busy to talk very much after that.

Writing Introverted Characters
If you're creating an introverted character and you're not familiar with the complexities of this trait, take the time to learn about it. - Claire Alexander
Why You Should Write Introverted Characters
Since stories are about action, it is easier to write a page-turner about action-oriented people. It can be difficult to write introverted characters - so why should you do it?
First of all, all the introverts of this world would be able to relate!
Introverted characters offer depth of character and are case studies for inner struggles.
Think of Jane Eyre, Mr. Darcy, Edward Cullen - well written introverts can turn shallow angst into desperate yearning that will have your readers swooning by Chapter Two.
Introverted characters' minds can be a thrilling minefield, feeling their emotions and thought so deeply that the reader gets chills just by seeing the world through their POV.
Make It a Strength, Not a Weakness
Introverted characters may not dazzle others or have lots of friends, but it also means they can be more compassionate, intelligent and sensitive.
Take Mr. Darcy for example - the twist that comes from him being thought of as an arrogant, aloof character to being the kindest, considerate man gives the romance in Pride and Prejudice so much more angst and satisfaction when everything works out.
Don't Succumb to Stereotypes
Introverts are quiet and needs alone time to recharge their social energy, not just shy/rude/has a general dislike for humanity.
They're watching body language, tone of voice, and reactions of others, cataloging them and tucking them away for future use.
If they have valuable things to say, they will keep their thoughts (for now), then join the conversation with more confidence if they feel convicted about a topic.
Your introvert can love spending time with their friends. They can prefer socializing one-to-one or in small groups.
Give Them a Retreat, Not a Cave
Introverts need a special place where they can find sanctuary from the overwhelming.
They need an escape to recharge and get through their day, not isolate themselves from the world on weeks on end. If your character does this, he is not just introverted, he may as well be severely depressed.
Give Them Motivation
Being introverted does NOT equal to being lazy or demotivated.
Introverted characters actively explore their inner worlds and may even be more motivated than others to find order and logic in their life.
As Jane Eyre tells us: "I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself." She is a passionate and strong-willed character because of this, giving the novel action and tension.
Let Them Be Awkward, Not Rude
Introverted characters won't know how to act natural around new people and fail to react when someone cracks a joke.
Let your introverted character feel claustrophobic in social gatherings and react negatively to small talk.
HOWEVER, not knowing what to say does not equal to cutting everyone's lines and frowning throughout a cheerful conversation. In fact, introverts would try extra hard to "fit in", laughing when others do (even though they don't get it) and dying inside about how awkward they sound, even to themselves.
Show The Chaos of Their Mind
Introverted thinkers in particular would overthink and spend vast amounts of time organizing and brainstorming thoughts.
They jump from thought to thought and latch on little things they notice in everyday life to imagine a host of loosely related things.
Does your introvert have a close friend they trust? Let them rant about their internal conversation to the other person (with whom they feel comfortable).
Research!! + other tips
Let them express themselves creatively through various hobbies: journaling, dry painting their bedroom, coloring books, or painting. Plaster their mirrors with sticky notes, make them knit, glass blow or garden their backyard.
Pay attention to their learning style. Many introverts learn best through reading, while being good listeners. They'll research about their interest through online sources, horded magazines, or at the local bookstore/coffee shop. Make them an expert in their field.
Show how they are underestimated. Because they keep to themselves, they are often underestimated. As an introvert myself, introverts are often underestimated in personal relationships (like friends or family) rather than professionally (although this is credible too) because they aren't particularly funny or outwardly supportive. But introverts can be emotionally supportive - they will be missed.
Not all introverts project each of these traits. Introverted Thinkers (Katniss) approach problems from a much differnt perspective than Introverted Feelers (Edward).
Make them sarcastic, cynical and argumentive. I love writing abotu introverts with a sharp tongue, especially when they're talking about a subject they know a lot about. They may also have a sharp tongue as a defense mechanism.

More bartylus hc
-They are both fucking pretentious in their own ways (12 Owls Barty??? He would be on his knees for Lady Macbeth) (only cuz he thinks of Regulus when he reads her lines)
-Regulus is lokie more a Hermia variant from Midsummer Night's Dream and Barty reminds me of a more unstable Helena variant tbh
-People think that Regulus is the one who reads more but it's actually Barty. He reads the Song of Achilles and doesn't stop crying for DAYS, Regulus refuses to touch that book.
-He also was the first outta the both of them to read Jane Eyre and most of his annotations were about Reg
-Barty's first copy of Frankenstein belonged to Regulus so it was already annotated. He spent more time reading the annotations than the actual text. So Regulus had to get him a clean copy.
-Regulus likes to wear tinted chapstick because the look of being really pale with red lips makes him think he looks good. So this leads to his drinks being stained with red lips. Barty loves it, a simple act that makes his heart flutter.
-Barty drinks his coffee straight black while Regulus' coffee is just more sugar than anything
-Regulus has a variety of teas that he switches from daily, Barty just drinks black with cream and sugar.
-Regulus subconsciously taps his fingernails against a table or wherever, and normally it unnerves people (cuz he's a Black so they think he wants something from them) but Barty likes to zone out to the sound since he likes the steady rhythm Regulus taps on.
-Trans Regulus Black with expensive hair accessories that he doesn't use anymore and Barty Crouch Jr who has too much hair and not enough patience (and def not the style to pull off expensive hair clips)
-ULTRAVIOLENCE IS REGULUS' FAVORITE ALBUM I SAID WHAT I SAID HE IS BLASTING MONEY POWER GLORY ON REPEAT AND SCREAMING OUT THE LYRICS OF I FUCKED MY WAY UP TO THE TOP, BARTY LOVES IT WHEN HE GETS TO SING THE ENDING OF BROOKLYN BABY WITH HIM AND HE SO IN LOVE WHEN REGULUS SINGS THE BEGINING OF COLA
-Anyways Barty would like MĂ„neskin, like cmonnn, him playing VALENTINE and thinking of Regulus?? Screaming his heart out to ZITTI E BUONI??? BABY SAID for the angst?? OWN MY MIND???? And him being Italian ig
-The Pantheon is hiding a snake in their dorms which likes to wrap itself around Regulus' neck, and Barty just stares
-Regulus comes back in 6th year with his hair cut and Barty chokes on his bitter ass coffee and coughs so violently a first year slytherin asked if he needed to see Madam Pomfrey
-Barty is pretty good with romance and sad movies, Reg is not, he actively balling his eyes out to fucking Disney movies. But Barty will not shut up during mysteries, he will immediately go on insane rants about the ending. And Regulus can’t hide his expressions when watching horror while Barty is watching with his brows permanently pressed together

Extraordinary. Publish this.
The more the time passes, the more convinced I am that a reading of Jane Eyre that omits the theme of mercy as key to the story is incomplete at best and bad at worst.

selfish
bf!joel x reader
Tumblr media
fic masterlist summary: joel has work. and you miss him.
warnings: angst, so much angst!!!, plenty of pining, both characters are stubborn, there is 0 communication, if only they would just talk to each other!!, but obviously not, why would they do that?, also reader is pregnant (no use of y/n, no outbreak, mild age gap (reader is 23, joel is 28))
word count: just under 1.2k
a/n: this is my first fic on here and idek why i've written this but i'm pining so,, T.T
it's fifteen minutes past 8 and joel is still tapping away on his keyboard, brows furrowed, lower lip between his teeth.
you've only peeked into the room to see if he's finally done, but he isn't. so you walk back out to the living room and pick up the new copy of notes from underground that you bought at the old book shop yesterday.
you'd wanted him to come with you, even told him it would be lovely to have him. but whilst the whole country took the day off for a holiday you don't particularly celebrate, joel was still in your room, still tapping away at his keyboard. with a soft sigh, you had pressed a kiss to his forehead and he'd given you a sheepish smile. I'm sure you'll love it, baby. send me loads of pictures.
so alone you'd gone, sifting through the piles and piles of unsorted books, hoping to find something nice. you'd picked up a small, tattered book about duties of couples in marriage. a wedding present signed off by a distant uncle. giggled at the silly pictures and then put it aside. more unsorted books, several copies of jane eyre, pride and prejudice, a tale of two cities (đŸ€ą you couldn't imagine ever picking that up again, what a terrible piece of prose).
until finally, a copy of notes from underground. fyodor dostoyevsky. you'd always wanted to read dostoyevsky but you'd never considered yourself having enough time or patience for him. deep breath. no better time than the present.
so here you are, curled up in the little nook next to the fire place where only you would think to sit. it's a tight spot but you like it. it's warm and comforting and since you don't have joel's arms, the brick wall will have to do. besides you’ve got olives and vanilla ice cream to keep your cravings at bay so at least there’s that.
you'd spent your day finally getting back to the painting you'd forgotten in the back of the attic last month, followed by work on your dissertation, glancing at your phone every now and then. no messages from joel. so you'd given him a missed call like you always did to catch his attention.
joel.
hi, baby, need a sec. brb.
and you'd given him a second. ten minutes. twenty. you knew you were being needy but before this god forsaken job you'd spent every day together, curled up in each other. you'd help each other with your assignments, him pressing absent-minded kisses to your shoulders as he flipped through his architecture textbook.
nearly an hour later he'd texted you back.
hi. sorry. got carried away.
no, it's okay. how are you?
and he'd gone on a rant about work. and you'd listened. and then he was gone again.
even when he came back home, all you'd gotten was a squeeze on the arm, a kiss on the forehead and a meeting, baby.
you'd wanted to scream. but how selfish would that be? he was working. besides your dissertation was waiting for you, the cursor blinking, jeering at you for leaving it mid word.
and now it is nearly two hours later. you've both eaten dinner in separate rooms and you're reading dostoyevsky.
dostoyevsky.
the clock is mocking you. tick, tock.
tick, tock.
tick, tock, you pathetic little bitch. he is working.
tick, tock, look at you! my god. he is working!
tick, tock.
"joel?"
nothing.
"joel!"
"hmm?"
"I'm bored."
he lets out a soft tired chuckle that makes your heart warm. "want me to come dance for you?"
idiot. you tell him as much.
you get up and tip toe to your room again. "hi."
"hi, sweetheart." his hair is soft and fluffy. you push your fingers through it, watching his eyes flutter shut.
you press a soft kiss to his lips. he smiles.
"do you have any time today?" you ask him, leaning back on your hands.
you really are pathetic. but you miss it. you miss having him all to yourself every night. you miss pressing soft kisses into his jaw without having to worry about his brows furrowing and him apologising because work was demanding his attention. you miss how he'd rub the anxiety away from your chest. didn't matter what the anxiety was about, he'd always take it away from you. and now he can't, because he's always anxious himself. about work. about you. about the baby you had on the way - the baby he was working so hard for.
and you want to be selfish. you want to tell him where it hurts. sometimes you do and you see his guilty little eyes as he looks over at you and tries to take it away. but it doesn't go away anymore. and he feels so fucking guilty about it. and you only add to his stress, and then you're feeling guilty too and it's not good for either of you.
"I'll be free in a bit, sugar. I'll be off at 10. I hope."
but that's not what you want. because once he's off at 10, he'll be tired. and he should rest.
but you're selfish.
so. "no, like. do you have any time today for me?" you rephrase and watch as his shoulders slack and his eyes darken.
look how sad you've made him.
"yeah. after 10." he's blunt. cold.
and that's because you know he wants to rest. and he knows he wants to rest. and you've just been selfish again and fuck, he's getting so tired. tired of constantly being pushed to show up. to be there. for work. for you.
you’d celebrated this job with him, hadn’t you?! made him a little cake and blown up balloons. it was a good job. hard work but it paid so fucking well. the two of you had planned this baby for so long. he’d taken up a diploma so that he wouldn’t have to support you on the wages of a contractor whilst you worked on your masters. but hindsight is 20/20 and you’d much rather have a small house and a tight budget and still have joel than sit in the living room alone, day after day as he worked his ass off trying to do what’s right what any man with self-respect would do.
tears sting your eyes. you miss him. and you're so fucking pathetic, making all of this about you. he notices but doesn't comment because he's done. he's done consoling you about something he is going through too.
but you're selfish. so you stand up and walk out and he's left staring at the ghost of your perfume wondering when something will finally let up. when something will give. when you'll just understand and let him be.
until then he knows that this cycle will repeat every day. because you're selfish.
not that he'd ever think that. because he's joel and fuck he loves you.
but you know it. and your clock knows it.
you're selfish.

Literally no one cares and I need to shut the heck up BUT after much deliberation I have come to the conclusion that while the 2011 film version is gorgeous, stunning, and near to my heart, the 1983 show version is *really* good, particularly because it stays very true to the novel AND the characters resemble their book counterparts very well!!! I like the way Timothy's Rochester is stern/snarky/silly in the ways that he should be (plus he's pretty), and I like the way Zelah's Jane is serious yet witty which show in her subtle expressions (plus she's pretty). Yay :-). I'm just happy that I have *good* media of my favourite novel to come back to when I can't just sit and re-read the whole thing.
"I saw it in your eyes: their expression, your smile -- was so lovely" (Blegh)
VS
"I saw it in your eyes when I first beheld you: their expression and smile did not strike delight to my very inmost heart so for nothing." (Gorgeous)
What the heckkk, why do films dumb down the most beautiful lines??? This isn't the same at all!!!
