Just read parts of a paper on LiS and that the ending, if it had implied saving chloe as the "good one", would've been more impactful in "reverting [the] conservative and inherently patriarchist overall outlook" which, fair enough I guess?

But also, I actually really like that they didn't make the ending positive because Max did sacrifice an entire town full of people to save chloe. She did do that, but I don't think it implies the ending as any less "good." To me, especially the nightmare but also all the other instances where the player is "forced" to save Chloe's life, makes it very clear that saving her isn't a bad thing at all. Chloe is so important to Max, she gets an entire flashback to all the moments they had together on the way to the lighthouse, she defends Max from herself, she physically brings Max to safety.

If they really wanted to make saving Chloe out to be a bad choice, they could've done it way more effectively. Neither ending is great, in the sense that neither of them is happy. But not all endings are happy, and that's also what I appreciate about the franchise. Sometimes you make a selfish choice and that's okay
