The more the time passes, the more convinced I am that a reading of Jane Eyre that omits the theme of mercy as key to the story is incomplete at best and bad at worst.
#I never really liked Jane Eyre#but I fully agree with this take#and especially with the commentary on St. John!!#he is RUTHLESS#he is shown sacrificing the happiness and well-being of the girl he loves (whatshername)#and he wants to do so to Jane…(because for him the ends justify the means)…#but she sees through him or at least sees through his worldview#and she rejects it wholeheartedly#which is interesting to me in context of some questions Ives had about Christian sacrifice recently#but this is clarifying:#we show mercy to others and sacrifice ourselves!#but We. Have. Got. To. Stop. Sacrificing. Other. People.#(I’m looking at you Agamemnon) (Abraham is good though; no comments)#it’s not Godlike at all!#when we choose God we gain other people as well! Otherwise we can only devour them eventually#anyway#jane eyre#literary analysis#ranting and raving#christianity
