I was also incredibly disappointed with how underwhelming and emotionally devoid their reunion was. They deserved so much better after so many years.

Did Viggo Really Die? (RTTE Headcanon and Theory)

Well met, my fellow Furians! Today, we'll dive into a topic I've been sitting on for years since the show, particularly Season 6, back in 2018.

Did Viggo really die in "Triple Cross"?

Thankfully, several other people have had this suspicion besides me, from what I saw after googling it.

There's @kingofthewilderwest 's post here, though it's about Season 4, I feel it applies well here. There's also a discussion thread about Viggo's death on the HTTYD Wiki here if you feel like checking it out.

But I found it really odd that Viggo "died" so anti-climatically when he survived a BLOODY VOLCANO!!! (That still ticks me off, by the way.)

What makes it stranger is that we see Viggo acting injured in this scene when Hiccup turns to Viggo.

And what happens after Hiccup leaves? Viggo straightens, drops the facade, and does THIS:

I mean look at this mad-lad WALKING AND CHARGING like nothing had happened to him!!! It's absurd!

And those arrows didn't look like they went all that deep. Which, when you think about it, makes sense. After all, there's no way Viggo wouldn't have arrow-resistant armor. Being the Chieftain of Dragon Hunters, his armor is probably mostly made of dragon materials. His cuirass is likely made of some tough dragon material, specifically made to repel any assassination attempts. Someone in his position must've had a lot of assassination attempts and even mutinies. Either that or Viggo is just extremely careful and wants to make sure every precaution is taken to ensure his safety and life.

Of course, the Skrill's fire blast might've killed him, but considering that we never see his death, we haven't seen a body, and the fact Krogan and Johann never mentioned it must mean that Viggo is actually alive.

Allow me to explain how this could be possible.

Viggolocks and the Three Accomplices

As you know, there is a special meaning to "Triple Cross". Not only is it encompassing the double-cross by Krogan and Johann against Viggo, but also the triple-cross Viggo did against them.

However, there's also another reason:

The Accomplices!

In this episode, when Hiccup met Viggo, the latter had this to say:

"The Accomplice. One of the most important pieces in all of Maces and Talons, allowing a player to use an opponent's piece for their own ends. You can certainly win without it; but with it, you can attain total victory."

This entire episode's theme is about accomplices. In fact, it's accomplices who are the episode's catalyst.

How many? Three.

Yes, that's right. THREE!

Hiccup is the first accomplice, obviously.

Who's the second?

A Skrill. Viggo drags Hiccup along to a very cold and snowy place (my theory and headcanon is someplace around the Shivering Shores), and uses a shiny dagger to attract a Skrill to him.

But why a Skrill? Viggo explains this to Hiccup in this scene:

"In ancient times, the Singetail was one of the most feared dragons. However, there was one dragon, whose powerful blast could neutralize the Singetail's fire. Meet our Accomplice, Hiccup. The Singetail's only predator: the Skrill."

Krogan's Flyers were guarding the Hunter base where the Dragon Eye was located. As such, having a Skrill — the Singetails' natural predator and only enemy — on their side was essential to their plan, even if it was just to be a distraction.

However, there was one more accomplice — a third accomplice — who might have possibly been involved that Hiccup (and perhaps even Viggo) didn't know was involved in their little scheme.

This guy, in Season 5's "Wings of War".

Honestly, I truly view this to be an abysmal display of teasing us with a plot point, only to not do anything with it! Seriously! What a waste of a good plot device! 😤💢😠

Or is it? 👀🤔

When he and Viggo dived into the volcano in Dragon's Edge, he almost fell off the ledge and into the volcano (even though, in reality, it's impossible to be anywhere near a volcano without dying from one thing or another 😑).

However, Viggo saved him from dying, causing the Hunter Goon to say this:

Dragon Hunter: I owe you my life!

Viggo: Perhaps someday you will repay me in some small way.

Bear in mind, Viggo didn't do this out of the goodness of his heart. He needed an ally — or an accomplice, in this case — who he could use in the tentative ally-cum-rival's camp. And saving his life was a great way to hook him into doing whatever he wanted him to do.

Thus, it is entirely possible that Viggo recruited him to take part in this scheme, fully intending to escape, take back his Hunters, and go to other lands to continue his empire.

In fact, what's interesting is the expression of this Hunter in this scene below.

Of course, as you know, from the earlier GIFs, it could just be that he was surprised at Viggo charging at him. But you never know.

Of course, one could point out that the Hunter might've already paid Viggo back by interrupting Viggo (and thus Krogan's attempt at assassinating him) in "Wings of War". However, I find that to be a flimsy rebuttal, and I don't believe that Viggo would let that slide and would argue that he already knew of Krogan's scheme, and thus, would insist that the Hunter still owed him.

Conclusion

Therefore, it is my conclusion — along with my theory and headcanon — that Viggo survived this confrontation. Albeit injured, he is saved by the Hunter whose life he redeemed for his own use as the unknown accomplice (to Hiccup) for his plans, and helped him escape Krogan and Johann, where they go to some isolated place to heal. And later, Viggo would gather the remnants of the Hunters, reunite with his Tribe, and sail to distant lands, as he had promised Hiccup.

HELLO AGAIN I'm glad to see you got my ask (it was important to me that you knew how much I ADORE this au) but now I've just gone back through the tag, I have some questions, if you don't mind! There's a good chance you've answered some of them before but I wanted to ask anyway:

First of all: with both Snotlout's being one character, and in Elder's age group, how does that work with some of the book specific scenes where Snotlout is being cruel to Hiccup during training (as the older ones have already gone through pirate training)?

Also slightly related: are either Adelaide or Gustav in Younger's pirate training programme or is it just the book people we hear about?

Also also slightly related (and you can tell I have a bit of a theme to my questions): what is Adelaide and Snotlout's relationship like? And what is Adelaide like full stop since she's barely mentioned in the books after all, so if you do have anything characterisation wise, that would be quite cool?

So Snotlout basically did all the book bullying to Elder back when they were both in the Pirate Training Program, (including the sabatoge and attempted parricide,) and he continued to do it through the Dragon Training Program and up until Elder saved everyone from the Red Death. Ever since starting the Dragon Academy, Elder has been receiving much more respect from his peers, and Snotlout has been having to draw back on the bullying to save face. Elder and he still have that chief-heir rivalry, of course, and it becomes a gag that Snotlout casually tries to kill him and Elder rolls his eyes like "oh, you" and then everyone laughs it off. Through RTTE he'll mellow out, and by the time of HTTYD 2, the murder theme will pretty much be gone with Snotlout having begrudgingly become real friends with Elder.

As for Adelaide!! I made a post about her a few years ago, but I decided I wanted to give her a bit of an update since I found a better slot for her in the larger story! (And also because I wanted to redesign her agahagah)

Adelaide is indeed in the Pirate Training Program! She pretty much becomes Younger's book!Snotlout, sans the murderous tendencies. Unlike Snotlout, Adelaide has nothing to gain from killing her Hiccup, but she has seen Snotlout heckle Elder enough times for her to mirror that onto Younger. Taking book!Snotlout's place also gives her all of his book lackies, like Dogsbreath! (Gustav is also a Pirate and one of her lackies, though he's less of a bully to Minicup and Fish and moreso just a mild annoyance 😂)

Adelaide and her friends' usual up-tos around Berk include sailboat racing, hunting rats and fish with their hunting dragons, basheyball, and other mischievous preteen activities (though never quite as destructive as what the Thorston twins get up to.)

Adelaide's relationship with Snotlout is amicable enough, though they probably bicker thrice as much as the Hiccups normally would. Snotlout likes to embarass Adelaide around the other Pirates and it annoys her to no end, but despite this (and she'd never say it to his face) she's often heard praising Snotlout up and down for being the coolest person ever. She likes to taunt Younger about how her cool and awesome big brother is gonna clobber his wimpy crybaby big brother. Even after Elder defeats the Red Death, she still has a habit of talking him down in favor of Snotlout, and continues to do so even through Race to the Edge and HTTYD 2.

She'd get some skull tattoos in RTTE, and her riding dragon would be the Devilish Dervish that Snot had in the books! I also wanted to give her a unique weapon, so she uses a flail mace!

Her role gets bigger from book 9 onward, as she and Snotlout's relationship with each other as well as their differing thoughts about who deserves to be King become extremely relevant.

Let's just say she's got a good throwing arm.

It has come to my attention that you have a md and HTTYD AU. I love both of those, so I am extremely curious to learn about this!! Can you explain a bit about your AU if it's not too much trouble? It sounds really cool!

Okay, so, at the moment it's pretty much just a retelling of the first How to Train Your Dragon movie with the Murder Drones cast, albeit with a few slightly altered plot points. I say "at the moment" because in the future it's going to eventually start adapting MD episodes and plotlines (my current plan is HtTYD 1 -> RoB-RttE with MD Episodes 2-4 sprinkled in here and there -> HtTYD 2 -> MD Episode 5 -> Cross between HtTYD 3 and MD Episodes 6-8, though this is subject to change), I'm just focusing on the "origin story" right now.

Uzi is human, and takes Hiccup's role as the ostracized inventor of her tribe, the Artisans (Uzi and Hiccup are actually REALLY similar when you think about it). Her number one goal in life is to take down the Slashers, a trio of completely unknown, never-before-seen, absurdly dangerous dragons that started attacking the island of Coppernein five years ago, so she can prove her worth to the tribe and earn her dad's respect and stuff. N (as well as V and J but they're not important right now) is a human-dragon hybrid, and takes Toothless' role as the mysterious nocturnal apex predator that no one's ever survived an encounter with before (again, they're REALLY similar when you think about it). He and his packmates sometimes provide cover fire for the local dragon flock when they attack the village, but never directly attack themselves because, for obvious reasons, they don't wanna risk being seen by humans.

One night, Uzi manages to shoot down a Slasher when it slices through a nearby watchtower, but when she goes out to find it, she's pretty shocked to discover that one of the unseen monsters half her tribe is scared to death of is some kind of, in her own words, freaky dragon-human-creature-hybrid-thing. The typical "wait this thing can talk, this is a sapient being" routine goes down when N wakes up, and he explains that if she takes him back to the village, V and J are gonna destroy the entire island just to keep their secret from getting out. (Not that he expects her to believe him, his own packmates never listen to him so why would this random human who wants to kill him hear him out?) Uzi is conflicted but eventually lets him go because fifteen minutes of fame doesn't mean jack when you and your entire tribe are dead (definitely not because she feels bad for him and empathizes with his feelings of worthlessness of course not why would you ever say that), N gives her one of his teeth as a thank-you gift and leaves, and over the next few days they find themselves unable to stop thinking about each other until Uzi decides "Screw it, this is one of exactly three people in my entire life who doesn't treat me like a waste of space, I'm gonna talk to him" and goes to the cove he's hiding out in, where they bond over food and drawing in the dirt. From there it's pretty standard HtTYD fare - Uzi helps him fly again, N shares information about dragons that she can use in the dragon-fighting arena, they keep growing closer as friends and learning more things about each other, and eventually Uzi decides she's gotta do something to stop her tribe's "dragons are heartless monsters who deserve to be killed" mindset. What she does I'm not entirely sure yet - haven't decided whether I wanna go the movie route of N saving her from the Monstrous Nightmare and getting captured, or the less dramatic route of Uzi successfully convincing the Artisans they don't have to kill dragons, then properly introducing them to N (and V) and having them all team up to stop the bigger threat at play - but either way it leads into a happy ending where humans and dragons make peace and live together in harmony.

Or at least it would be a happy ending, if it weren't for people starting to disappear, Doll acting strange, N and V having bizarre dreams about their shared past that neither can completely recall, J being nowhere to be found, Uzi progressively feeling weirder and less comfortable in her own skin, and a mysterious stranger with unclear intentions watching from the shadows. But those are problems for the future.

The future might be closer than they think.

(Also I didn't have anywhere else to say this but this is very much a NUzi AU, I made N half human entirely so I could have NUzi without it being gross and worked out the lore reasons for it from there.)

i've been thinking ab this for days and i need to put it into words now bc oml. i've always wondered why, despite the ending sweeping my feet out from under me, i was wary towards httyd3 throughout. and fuck, it was right from the start.

that initial shot we get of 'busy, busy berk'? that right there, instantly tells me that these characters and this world have been treated poorly. maybe i'm a little influenced by the shows, i'm fully willing to accept that, but is it realisic to imagine hiccup - a man dedicated to learning about dragons and doing what's best for them, now surrounded by people who share that view - would allow them all to stay on berk?

sure, maybe a larger flock develops because toothless is alpha now. but there's a lot more space around berk than that tiny outcropping of rock the village is built on. even before peace with dragons they had expanded off it! and the dragons they rescue from trappers are no excuse. berk is a 'well-kept secret' of dragon trainers, but those are wild dragons that can live anywhere.

not to mention, we never actually see any other tribes in the movies, and hiccup describes those they encounter as people who 'run for the hills' when they see dragons. so, presumably, they don't share the viking sentiment of 'no i got here first i'll fight you to defend it'. and honestly, the world is wide.

don't get me wrong, i like hiccup's flaw of prioriting dragons over humans. but if anything, that backs up my point that hiccup wouldn't let them live like that. even with food demand mitigated and domestication rampant, can you imagine the territory squabbles alone? these dragons aren't meant to live on top of each other like that. the only times we see them doing so is under whatever form of mind control.

sure, it's a fun concept and makes for impressive visuals. sure, the movie includes realising to some extent that way of living is detrimental. but my gods they don't have to uproot their lives to do it, and by all rights it shouldn't have been allowed to happen in the first place. can you imagine a berk that has not just metaphorically but physically expanded and thrived beyond its closed borders, built new homes to last on new land?

it's that extreme reaction for the sake of emotional impact that ruins the steady reinforcement of this franchise's themes. this is why i don't trust dean deblois with httyd any more. this is why story and character is more important than anything else in a piece of media, why overlooking that driving force for the sake of anything else will not work.

Girl I mostly need help with lore (and maybe design ideas, I don't mind prompts eigther) but here's some other stuff I got so far

For now, we'll call baby dragonoid's "Hatchlings". They stay with the name "hatchling" until they are about the equivalent of 10 years old.

I can't think of a dragon equivalent title to tween or teen so if you come up with anything. Edit (idea given to me by evostar): Tweens/teens are called Dweeps!

Diet mostly consists of fish (like regular dragons). I think fruit, other types of meat, and vegetables too?? I'm not sure.

Elders that are the equivalent of 40-50 years of age guard the edges in case any humans stumble upon the Encanto.

Also, dragonoid's that are Alma's age are deathly afraid of the outside world. So, the rule of never going beyond the barrier is HEAVILY MANDATORY.

DO NOT TOUCH THE EGGS!!! If you aren't a relative or close family friend, you will get a limb torn off.

Hatchlings are very curious and hardheaded; they only learn after the accident to not do it again (hopefully). Same for tweens and teens, but not to an extreme extent. Hatchlings also have a lot of energy.

Nests/Homes are always adorned with jewelry and anything shiny.

No shoes. Their feet are as stuff as leather so there's no need to wear them.

Teeth are as sharp as knives, it's a miracle tongues aren't bitten by accident on the daily.

shops, vendors, and "restaurants" do exist in Encanto it just looks different a little different.

The fashion is well...raggy per say?

Examples:

They can make their clothes look close to human standards, but they simply don't want to conform to that for petty reasons. And I just love this kind of fashion, so I wanted to put it in here.

Odd patterns, random jewelry, embroidery, patches, etc. Plus, certain patches or scraps of fabric are passed down from generation to generation.

Madrigals!

I've decided, they do have gifts!

Alma wears a headpiece jewelry on her head that belonged to Pedro. She's rarely, if ever, seen with it off. Example:

Also, male dragonoid's where whatever they want. Earrings, necklaces, rings, etc.

Ceremonies still exist, but like in beach town au, the very fact that you are alive is very important. Especially to a dragonoid seeing as they were wiped out very easily.

All of them are close in this au, no pressure. Isabela is the very definition of wild and so are the other grandkids.

As hatchlings (baby - 4), they bit everything in sight for teething reasons. Even their parents but it doesn't hurt at all. But to a human, the pain would be like if a piranha latched onto you.

Mirabel doesn't have a gift (I'm sorry Miraboo butcha don't), and her wings are smaller than the others. So, she mostly has to walk, crawl, climb, and run wherever she needs to go.

Which isn't an issue really, her body is already equipped with the biology to do all four, but it does get tedious.

Pepa doesn't breathe fire, she blasts lightning out of her instead. Think toothless.

Also, I'm not sure what dragon type they should be related too. Each dragonoid is related to some type of dragon but I can't decide theirs'. (But I think the triplets should be a mix between Alma and Pedro, the yellow kids should be a mix of Pepa and Felix, same for the blue couple and their kids.)

One more thing, Dragonoids' are taller than the average humans but much smaller than original dragons (BUT it depends on the type of dragon). I hope that makes since.

I'll have to look up the different types of dragons from HTTYD for some more info.

Pretty sure these are longer than last time but that’s okay

- Kelsey and Arden both cheated off of Christian in a VERY important exam in their last year of high school, causing all 3 to get in big trouble

- Angel twerks

- Baaabe and Angel worked the same office job, and were best friends ever since

- Whenever David is shifted, Angel plays the “Let me do it for yew” sound on TikTok

- Asher sticks his head out the car window whenever Baaabe is driving

- Milo used to own a piggy bank as a kid and brought it to class, but after he showed it off, someone stole it.

- He was staying by his cubby too (where the piggy bank was), so he doesn’t know how someone stole it from right under his nose. To this day he believes it was a ghost

- Ansel unironically listens to Cbat

- Angel and Arden are best friends

- Christian and Baaabe always roll their eyes whenever Asher does something stupid. The only difference is that Baaabe has a smile on their face.

- Asher was given detention 19 times in middle school, and only ever went once

-David holds his breath whenever walking by someone smoking

- Tank and Milo were forced to wear a “get-along shirt” as kids.

- Sweetheart prefers White Kitkats

- Sam outran the pack during a pack run once

Did you know Dreamworks is making a teenage kraken movie about a girl kraken trying to blend in and the antagonist a mean girl mermaid with red hair. I haven’t seen the trailer cause I was told it reveals a lot but as soon as I heard kraken I had to ask you about it

I went ahead and watched this while I was decompressing in my car. When you said 'Dreamworks Kraken movie' My brain immediately 'dinged' because someone on Twitter, a year and some change ago, had leaked some concept art of mermaid/seamonster girls for a Dreamworks film so I'm guessing this is the film they were made for.

Now that the trailer is out, though... I have opinions! And not all of them are good.

First and foremost? This trailer sucks ass. Notice I didn't say anything about the animation or character-design, I said 'this trailer' sucks ass.

Why? Because this trailer is more like one of those YouTube 'reviews' that's really just a supercut of every important event in a movie. 'But Lit~ they have to show the eyecatching parts so people will watch the full movie~' A trailer is supposed to be a preview. PREVIEW! This is the 'Illumination School of Trailer-Composition' (i.e.: show every joke in the movie in one go) taken to the next worst extreme.

Now that that's out of the way:

Is it bad that, when I saw the main character, my brain went 'God, I hope we're not dealing with another Bug's Life/Antz situation'?Obviously, this movie is coming out ages after Luca, but this design really had me going 'R63!Luca???' And it makes me wonder if one studio heard about the other making a 'teenage fish movie' and it was a rush to see who could get theirs to screens first.

Plot - I get what they're doing with a 'teenager who just wants to live a normal life turns out they have a family, world-changing secret' (I mean, 'teenager' is right there in the title), but the initial setup has me going 'Again?' I just feel like this setup has been done a significant amount of times and I'm just left... *shrugs*

The dichotomy they're presenting with Krakens and Mermaids is... interesting. Also love that our antagonist is 'Not!Ariel'

It seems like it'll be a fine Dreamworks movie: not anything ti surpass Kung Fu Panda or HTTYD but something that's watchable in comparison to Boss Baby and Trolls.

thank you for speaking on the disaster final movie of the HTTYD series. as someone who mostly read the books as a kid, and had it as my favorite series and favorite movie, I am forever crushed that… idk. everything. i never watched the show, but I wasn’t thrilled with the second movie and was absolutely so disappointed by the dragons leaving in the end. additionally, after playing some of the old wii games, seeing how shit anything new related to it is is… idk. soul crushing. I would love to see an animated series made of the original, where it’s drawn elegantly but childishly, and hiccup has a tiny wretched mean little common dragon with no teeth who is super rude and demands bathroom breaks, and a traumatized riding dragon with three legs who he loves dearly. hell, I just wish dragons could speak again and were allowed to have their own desires and ambitions and were more than animals. I’ll even take the potato plothole over this shit. (how can he have been a potato farmer when a potato single normal potato is a relic and extremely important object in the 7th book smh)

as a dragon kid i love toothless but seeing our boy be brutally commercialized complete disheartens me from the series. Idk if you have any thoughts on all of this, I just appreciated your analysis of the third movie. Validates my choice not to watch it. on a similar but perhaps unrelated topic, I also didn’t watch the third movie because the third movie in the kung fu panda trilogy was TERRIBLE after the second was a masterpiece. misery and suffering abound.

ok so I've got more next-generation dragon riders for the fic im working on

but they're the kids of the antagonists - the warlords of the northern alliance (im probably gonna come up with a different name for them, idk)

their perspective on dragons is somewhat complicated because they grew up with their parents telling them how horrible the world was before they subjugated dragons and how they have to be harsh with them to keep them in line...but at the same time, they grew up as dragon riders who have pretty close relationships with their own dragons. So they kind of see dragons in general as a force that has to be put under the "right" kind of control (ie, subordination, not cooperation).

sooo here's my lil guys!

Oktai (16/17ish) is the younger son of Griselda the Grievous and Chaghatai Khan (yes, I put them together, it just made sense to me, idk). Oktai gets along much better with his dad, who is more easygoing and laid back, whereas mom is suuuper intense. Oktai's sort of the runt of the litter of the warlord kids. He's not a fighter at all - somewhat similar to Hiccup in HTTYD 1, but a lot more cynical and moody. He's extremely jealous of his older brother but also looks up to him. He excels at learning about dragons — specifically how to manipulate them. It upsets him but he tries not to think about it too much cause he's just trying to get by and not piss anyone off, especially his mother. Any time he feels a twinge of empathy he shoves it waaay down. Damn pesky conscience.

Appearance: Medium height and thin. Messy, black shoulder length hair, usually in a ponytail. Light brown, cat-like eyes. Pointed facial features.

Fun fact: Oktai is a Mongolian name that means "he who understands." Yes, this is important.

Oktai is the only one who does not ride a dragon.

Alaric (early 20s) is Oktai's older brother. He's handsome, tall, charismatic, honest, a great fighter, etc, etc. He's brave and a good leader—definitely next in line to lead the Warlords. He adheres strictly to the worldview his parents taught him—that dragons are a force that must be conquered. His father goes about this from more of a "greater good" perspective, whereas his mother wants to do away with any forces that stand in the way of her ability to exercise power. Either way, Alaric is not about questioning his worldview. Whereas Oktai avoids doing so out of fear, Alaric just doesn't understand why anyone would. He believes that they're the good guys. Not like those reckless anarchists on Berk...right?...Right?

Alaric doesn't really understand his baby brother but he looks out for him as best as he can.

Appearance: Tall, broad-shouldered. Long, dark brown hair in a braid. Light brown eyes. Rectangular features. Annoyingly handsome. And his teeth are just like...stupidly perfect. What a show-off.

Fights with a sword and rides a Typhoomerang...I think. Might change that later.

Bjorn (late teens/early 20s) is the older son of Ragnar the Rock. He's tall and beefy...like not muscular—BEEFY. He's kind of an asshole to Oktai but not when Alaric's around. He's very serious and easily-angered. His little sister annoys the hell out of him, but he's still protective of her.

Appearance: Tall, and as previously stated, beefed up. Covered in tattoos. Short, curly ginger hair shaved on the sides.

Fights with a mace and rides a Crimson Goregutter. He really likes the name.

Edda (about 15) You CANNOT stop her, she can only be contained. Younger daughter of Ragnar the Rock. She's mischievous, impulsive, and sneaky. Also tends to be mean to Oktai, but not always on purpose. She kind of just opens her mouth and stuff comes out. Who can keep track?

Appearance: Short with an athletic build. She has a cute baby face (but don't let that fool you. She will set your house on fire). Short, curly ginger hair. Absolutely covered in freckles.

Fights with knives and rides a Raincutter, whom she has secretly named Puddle (they're not supposed to name their dragons). She loved Puddle too much not to name him though.

Why do you hate httyd 3 so much? Also is it a thing that’s generally hated by people in the fandom?

Oh anon ANON. I could talk about this for days on end bc honestly I have so many opinions. But I’ll boil it down as best I can w bullet points.

(Also in terms of the fandom it’s kinda hard to tell?? Httyd 3 is very divisive. I’ve seen its avid fans and its avid haters. Overall I’d say the fandom seems to lean more on negative but please don’t take my word on that.)

Anyway, salt:

- Ultimately, HTTYD 3 basically dumped a steaming turd over the morals and messages that the first two movies. 1 was all about being able to change the world through kindness and having an open mind. 2 said “No actually, you can’t change the minds of some people, but you can still fight for what you believe in and you CAN win”. But 3 said “Actually humans are terrible and the world can’t be changed so the dragons should just hide away for the rest of their lives”. And just???? How was a franchise that was all about overcoming challenges and foes reduced to having such a pitiful and bleak ending???

- The idea perpetuated in the film that platonic love is lesser to romantic love. This film reeked of heteronormative themes and pushed the idea that settling down and having children with a spouse is the ultimate “happy ending”. (Which is especially untrue for Hiccup if he wasn’t OOC) Not only is the theme overdone to death, but the whole idea that romantic love is superior to friendship is so gross in of itself. Romantic love is wonderful, yes, but teach kids that it’s not the be all and end all. Teach kids that friendship and family are absolutely just as important. And the HTTYD franchise was doing a PERFECT job at that until the third movie.

-The Light Fury. God what can I say about her that hasn’t been said already? Her design itself doesn’t irk me as much as some other people, but it’s the thought process behind her design that gets me mad. They literally stated in the artbook that they didn’t even want her to look reptilian because she had to be ✨sexy✨ and ✨feminine✨ enough to get Toothless panting like a horny dog. It’s a load of misogynistic design choices at play. Also not to mention she has as much personality as a pile of dirt. She pretty much exists solely to please Toothless and is barely given any development or screen time of her own.

- One of the biggest mysteries of the entire franchise: what happened to the night furies? Was answered in one of the most underwhelming and shitty ways possible. We waited years for an answer only for Grimmel to be like “I killed them all lol”. No flashbacks. Barely any explanations. Just some guy claiming to have wiped an entire species off the earth, conveniently bar one. It was a major let down. Especially considering that if Grimmel wasn’t bullshitting, Toothless really will be the last of his kind, which is very heartbreaking.

- The ending is extremely frustrating and dumb. There was literally no reason for the dragons to leave to THW. The film tired to hammer home this message that they deserved to be “free” which I COULD get behind but the thing is....the dragons literally were extremely happy and content with their lives. They loved having riders. Dragon riding was never portrayed as abusive or cruel. It’s like the filmmakers saw real world issues regarding animal captivity and decided “Hey let’s try tackle this in our film even though it makes no sense with how we’ve portrayed the relationship between dragons and humans”. There was also the point that the dragons would be “safe” in THW, but really?? Would they?? They act as if they weren’t able to defeat Grimmel‘s army and they had no other choice but to send the dragons away for their own protection but they??? Literally defeated him??? Onscreen???? And it’s not like this was new territory for them. Half of Race To The Edge dealt with dragon hunters (and Viggo was honestly more intimidating than Grimmel.) Also!!! At the very end where Toothless doesn’t recognize Hiccup? God that was absolutely heartbreaking. A whole six years of friendship erased and forgotten. It states on the wiki that between Toothless leaving and that scene the two had absolutely NO CONTACT. Why??? This is never explained at all??? Yeah sure Hiccup and Toothless are best friends but let’s not attempt to make any contact for like 10 years. And for all Hiccup knew, that tailfin could’ve faltered and Toothless could’ve been dead because of it. It’s just so, so bad an ending and it makes me very, very mad.

Then of course there’s more stuff I could touch on, like the bastardization of Toothless’ character and how a lot of the great female characters like Valka are just completely swept aside. But I’d be here all night if I went over everything that ticked me off.

I hope this cleared things up anon. And honestly thank you for asking me bc sometimes raging on THW is therapeutic lol.
