Video games recommendation for women part 2

The same criteria as before: has to have a female lead and little to no misogyny

1. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

The seemingly invincible and endlessly talented Lara Croft goes on yet another adventure, this time exploring the Amazon jungle and South American ruins looking for a magical artifact hoping to prevent her enemies, an evil organisation called Trinity, from using it.

Tomb Raider is a franchise that has changed quite a bit over the years. Ever since the reboot, Lara has become a fully fledge character and she doesn't do rock climbing in a skimpy outfit anymore (which made the boys mad, boohoo).

But sadly she still suffers from her reputation of sexy girly indiana jones which I suspect is why women don't seem that interested in her. Shame!

It's not usually the type of games I like (very over the top "blockbustery") but I got hooked the minute I set foot (or rather crashed) in the Peruvian jungle. The game is visually stunning, I loved exploring all the ancient temples, the crypts, the jungle and seeing all the animals. The puzzles were challenging, the fights were fun, it was entertaining, well made, with lots of female characters and it takes place in Peru which is just the cherry on top for me.

The only thing I didn't like was Jonah but then I never liked him. He's Lara's best friend and is pretty much there to be kidnapped and rescued in every game, which is kind of a nice reversed damsel in distress trope I suppose, but still, you're useless Jonah I kept telling my screen.

2. Alien Isolation

In this game you play as Ellen Ripley's daughter who ends up trapped in a gigantic spaceship with a lethal enemy, of course, the infamous alien: the xenomorph.

This game is perfect if you are currently suffering from constipation. It doesn't rely on cheap jumpscares and gore to scare you no, it's all about the ~ambiance~. If you are found, you are dead, simple as. And you will die... A LOT. I got an achievement for dying 50 times. I was laughing hysterically whenever the alien caught me by that point and I think the alien was too.

They say "in space no one can hear you scream" but this alien can hear your footsteps so this makes for some tense gameplay, especially as the alien's AI is very good and you are extremely vulnerable. To survive you will have to be very mindful of the noises you make and the noises the alien makes. Oh yeah, you both crawl through the same ventilation system by the way. This could make for some awkward encounter... On top of having to deal with the alien you will meet androids and humans who aren't exactly friendly either. The goal is, of course, to escape from the ship alive.

I have to give the developpers props for really making us feel like we are in an Alien movie. The music, the ship's design, the alien itself, are all very faithfull to the movies and this game is rightly considered a classic.

3. Spiritfarer

In Spiritfarer you play as Stella (and her cat) who has become the captain of a boat on which she welcomes the spirits of different people who have died. She will accompany them for a while until it's time to cross the bridge and say farewell.

It's worth mentionning, given how rare it is, that the main character is a black girl. Your job is to manage the boat (make improvements to it) and become self-sustainable: you will grow your own food, build houses for each spirit and decorate it, grow trees, collect wood, fish, feed your guests. You can make a mill, a weaving workshop, a sawmill, a kitchen, a garden, etc and arrange it as you please.

Most importantly, you will travel the sea to meet new spirits, learn about their lives and fullfill their last wishes before they are ready to leave us. And then you will cry and cry and cry as the music rises and you give them one last hug.

It's a cosy game, slow paced, lots of dialogues, cute mini-games within it, and at times really funny interactions because it all looks so cute yet the characters act and talk like normal people (they told me to fuck off quite a lot) and they will often get into unprompted anti-capitalist rants. It reminded me of Spirited Away a lot, very strange and comfy at the same time.

It's a story about death, about how each person handles it, what they look back on, and yet it's a very pleasant game.

AC Reeve's consciousness was sent back in time to his CC era self for a short time. In the middle of trying to make a game plan for his past self to find after he is returned to his own time, he comes across a young cadet Cloud. Struck by how timid and dismayed he looks, Reeve decides to try giving him some encouragement, or possibly set up some connections for him to use in the future.

It is unfortunate for Reeve that Cloud has just lost a bet with Zack and is currently in quite the foul mood, thus not feeling very charitable to random people coming up to him to give him some life advice.

*Reeve walks up to Cloud and grips his shoulder*

Reeve: Perhaps you should murder Sephiroth.

Cloud: EH?

Reeve: Who knows? Maybe one day he'll disappoint everyone by becoming an evil, godlike creature and fusing with an alien mother. Why not take control of his future to prevent that?

Cloud: Uh....I don't mean to be rude, but can you leave me alone? I'm not in the mood for this.

Reeve, gasping: RUDE? ASSERTIVE? EXHAUSTED? YOU'RE FROM THE FUTURE TOO!

Cloud: Excuse me!?

Reeve: IF WE'RE QUICK, WE CAN ASSASSINATE THE PRESIDENT TODAY AND TAKE OVER SHINRA BY TOMORROW.

Cloud: YOU'RE INSANE.

*Cloud tries to leave but Reeve grabs onto his leg*

Reeve: THEN WE CAN TAKE THE BLACK MATERIA! DEFEAT THE ALIEN! MAYBE MY HUMAN FORM ISN'T AS APPEALING AS MY CAT ONE.

Cloud: WHAT THE FUCK

*Cloud pulls himself away and runs off*

Reeve: NO! DON'T GO! WE STILL HAVE TO STOP SEPHIROTH'S CHILDREN! THE REMNANTS!

Reeve:

Reeve: *sigh*

*Reeve turns around and Sephiroth is standing right there*

Sephiroth: I have children?

Reeve: Technically, yeah.

Sephiroth: Do they have a mother?

"And we're back." Linda DuPree smiled into the camera, doing her best to appear natural. "With LaBrea... Uh... Is that your first or last name?"

The camera panned over to Linda's "guest." At first glance she appeared human, though the illusion broke down quickly. The size was the immediate tip-off: nine feet tall, with chalk-white skin and half-feline features.

From her short muzzle a pair of dagger like fangs dipped to just under her jaw. She "wore" an evening gown and opera gloves made of viscous liquid tar, the same material that formed an impossible mane upon her head.

The liquid moved and shifted with a life of its own, and a tendril of her floor-length "tresses" was presently dancing behind Linda like an agitated cobra, dripping rivulets of shimmering black oil that flowed along the ground back into her dress.

"Just LaBrea." Her voice carried an odd mix of valley girl inflection and a Hollywood Count Dracula accent, somehow unimpeded by her tusk-like fangs. "Thank you for asking. And Linda, can I just say that I am so thankful that you had little old me on your show, to get to know all the good people at home?"

"Thank, yes, I would like to-" Linda paused, and gathered herself. "I'd like to thank you, very much, LaBrea, for allowing the paramedics to give Sarah and Pauline transfusions."

"They were deliciously boring, dahling." She smiled. "Not like you. So. What do you want to ask me?"

"Well, what are you?" Linda winced. "Was that rude? I-"

"No, Dahling, you're just timid, frightened, like a little mouse. I like you." LaBrea tapped her chin, the slick mass of tar on her head shifted into a raised secretarial bun, a pair of glasses frames forming on her face, evoking a 'thoughtful' look by way of a fashion photo shoot.

"I'm a sabertooth tigress by death, a vampire professionally, an actress by calling and a Fossil Ghoul in general."

"Lets talk about that last one."

"Oh, acting! I don't have representation yet, but you have seen me on the news! And now here! On the hostage episode of The Squadt with Linda, Sarah, Pauline, and the husk formerly known as Darla!" She made an old fashioned 'call me' gesture into the camera with her tar-dripping claws.

"She'll be fine. I mean... not psychologically, but in a few categories I'm sure."

"I meant lets talk about the Fossil Ghouls. What does that mean?"

"Okay, so, like, I'm sure you've heard all kinds of things from the DynoGuard and their little juicebox pals, no offense."

"None taken."

"Wasn't a request. Like I was saying. You've heard that we're some kind of alien species that feeds on fear that's come here to bring an age of suffering and ultimately extinction upon you all. And I just want to let everyone know that couldn't be further from the truth."

"I, for one am glad to hear tha-"

"Yeah, species implies we reproduce and create life like mortals, which is downright offensive. Also, we feed on all forms of evil that you both commit and suffer, not just fear."

"So what are you then?"

"I'm the bones of a sabertooth cat, a whole lot of tar, a mass of your species superstitions, fears, and desires brought to life with a dark heart."

"A Dark Heart... is that metaphorical-?"

LaBrea plunged a hand into the tar at her hip, digging around in it as it were a pocket, before withdrawing a pulsing crystal the size of a cantaloupe. It was shaped like a human heart, carved crudely out of a sickly amber-yellow crystal. Inside, Linda could see a shadow moving around like a bug in a jar.

"This is a dark heart. Made form the ichor of Apothis herself, and holding a poor little soul that was too wicked to get fully digested after the master's last stop." LaBrea turned to the heart and its tiny shadow. "Who wasn't digested? You weren't, you weren't digested were you? You little atrocity you!"

Linda flinched as the shadow slammed itself against the wall of the heart nearest to her. She couldn't remember what it looked like, only that it had many teeth and claws it ought not to have, and was scrabbling furiously at the crystal in a futile attempt at escape. The camera did not pick up the finer details.

"You need a lot of evil, a lot of entroplasm, to make a little monster like this big and strong enough to be a real Fossil Ghoul." LaBrea said. "So you see, by letting us run roughshod over your world, you're actually helping us thrive. Isn't that fun?"

"You mentioned Apothis... That's the meteor that killed the dinosaurs?"

"Oh sweet little mouse! Apothis comes for everyone eventually. As a civilization gets big, and gets smart, its capacity to both inflict and experience evil swells. And when you're ripe, the monster meteor herself comes to feast, leaving a mass extinction in her wake. Before moving to the next star to do it, and the next, coming back around when your world has a new set of annoying talking matter that knows how to scream and mean it."

LaBrea shook herself from her ravings and regained her perky, if uncanny, posture. "Annoying talking matter and you, Linda. We're besties. Obviously!"

"How, how many times has Apothis done this?"

"To Earth? More than a couple by a few, dahling." LaBrea. "The lizards were the only ones to do something about it, and we'll have them dealt with soon."

"Why are you telling us this?" Linda asked.

"Because, dahling, it won't help. Not knowing, not begging, not even worshiping me." She tilted her head and smiled. Both the tilt and smile went farther than they ought. "Not that you shouldn't do all three anyway. They're fun!"

Linda blinked, unsure of how to respond.

"I mean fun for me." LaBrea grinned into the camera, then took a long, low inhale through her nose. As she did, Linda saw tendrils of smoke roiling from the cameras, the audience, and even herself, rushing into the creature's oddly petite nostrils. The smoke was an impossibly dark and deep purple and it smelled of burning decay.

She could taste the wisps flowing out of her mouth. They tasted like her divorce, her broken leg, her father's funeral-

"Don't turn that dial." LaBrea said in a mocking parody of Darla's voice. "Some of us will be right back after a message from these sponsors."

(That’s a wrap!

I hope you all enjoyed Hex’s storyline! This was one of the most fun generations I’ve played in the legacy. It was interesting to play a not-so-nice sim, featuring crimes with the hint of Sims humour! I can also showcase a closeup of the recolour I did for this specific pose! I don’t know if it’s clear to see Hex is holding up the board with her own name on it in her legacy banner!

Hex’s main journey ends here, but this won’t be the last we see of her! The fallout of Hex’s actions have a long lasting ripple effect on her family!

Our next post will be the start of generation nine with our heiress, Mercy!

She has no relationship with Karma and dislikes Justice!

Madoka 1.5

Since I’m watching PMMM for the first time (with a lot of it spoiled due socmed lol), I figured it’d be fun to write my thoughts so far, 1.5 episodes in. It goes without saying, but don't send me any further spoilers, as this is only fun if I can manage to remain as ignorant as I am now.

Things I knew before hand:

-Kyubey is a bastard.

-It has Shinbo Akiyuki's artistic sensibilities all over it (reason I started watching, tho I'm unclear what exactly his involvement in this is lol). Also, Urobuchi Gen is the main writer for this lol

-Madoka dies.

-Madoka is the paragon of good.

-Lesbian Satan.

-Homura has catholic guilt??

-Someone's backstory involves a brother or something.

Illusory motion.

An upwards climb or a downward spiral? The irregular curving of the stories and the pattern alternance sure makes it look like it's spiraling inward. As our lace curtain lifts so the play can begin, this is our first look at the kind of world that awaits us.

I don’t have a lot to say about the witches’ labyrinths yet, but I’m always a sucker for dreamscapes (I loved them dearly in Flip Flappers, where they had the incredible work of Studio Pablo strengthening the storybook look), and I’m assuming the labyrinths symbolize something about the interiority or the difficulties the witch in question faced. I don’t have a lot to go by with the two labyrinths in episode one, but I did love the glimpse of the one we get in the opening sequence. I love the effect that it creates when alternating between panoramic shots or extreme close-ups to Madoka’s legs and back as she runs—respectively making her look too small against this overwhelming set piece or claustrophobically trapped in her impotence. As the camera moves along, there’s a sensation that the different patterns in the floors are moving. Because of the way we perceive depth via ascertaining the apparent parallelism or convergence of lines and value/color contrast, among other things, the pattern alternance in this monochrome set piece creates illusions of either motion or that each row is a step more elevated than the other. It’s a properly trippy place. I enjoy it. The straight white for the lighting and tiles creates an artificial and alienating atmosphere. The uniformity of its looks is disorienting. Is Madoka going the right way? It’s really a fantastic introduction to the world of Madoka Magica.

The path you must follow has been prepared for you.

Despite the disorienting feeling, Madoka follows mostly straight paths and there's a clearly labeled, correct exit. This brings to mind the predetermined paths present in Revolutionary Girl Utena's imagery.

Additionally, I find the way Madoka’s run is boarded reminiscent to Utena’s chase after Anthy in Adolescence of Utena:

We get panoramic overhead shots emphasizing the disorienting, geometrical maze and the impotence of our heroines' tiny figure against them.

Before reaching their destination, they both cross a stairs-bridges of sorts; Utena, towards the dueling arena where Anthy waits for her to continue the dueling cycle with Utena as champion; Madoka, towards the foyer where she can find her exit to where Homura is struggling against another hopeless, fighting cycle, one which Madoka choses to perpetuate when making a contract with Kyubey…

Absolute Reality.

The offer that tempts Madoka into a contract is the promise of agency. She can’t stand the reality where there is nothing she can do, thus it's the promise she does actually have power to influence the narrative and help others and stop their suffering what Kyubey dangles in front of her. Madoka feels deeply moved by the pain of others and has a strong empathetic response that makes it very easy for her to be preyed upon by our resident ugly cat here. It’s detrimental to her. Maybe Homura has a point in reversing her wish to be the divine embodiment of Goodness.

It’s then interesting that she expresses disappointment upon waking up not only in the premiere but in episode 02, as well. Her waking up animation might as well become bank during this introductory arc (I’m betting it does, can’t wait to be wrong). When confronted with the thought the world her senpai Mami introduced to her, one of great danger but also apparently fulfilling and actualizing, might be nothing but an illusion, Madoka expresses disappointment. Even though she has a happy, easygoing life full of friends and family that love her and that she loves in return, there is something else she is looking for.

Confronting your own humble plainness again.

Appearances, facades.

Following Madoka’s "dream", we learn about her homelife anchored around her interactions with her mother as they talk about the love lives of the people around Madoka, contrasted to Madoka's own assertion that no one has an eye on her. Their whole bathroom conversation could be characterized as "girl talk": they go on about love and the need to maintain an appealing image as means to reach it. I could easily accuse this scene of being sexist (and it did rub me the wrong way initially), but the dialogue is naturalistic enough to paint a trusting, warm bond between mother and daughter; plus the repetition of the make-up motif in the second episode while interspersed with Mami's explanation draws attention to themes of appearance and desire.

A remark that can easily be taken as reinforcing gender essentialism lol

The contrast in the way mother and daughter carry themselves is apparent. When Madoka relays her reports about her homeroom teacher's love life, her more experienced mother offers keen observations about the possible state of the relationship. Where Madoka takes things at face value, her mother can see deeper. The same applies to the image they project to the world— where her mother has a set (numbered) method to achieve her ideal image, Madoka fumbles and fusses about her ribbon choice and not being seen as too much. The frame pan showcasing the end result has Madoka standing timidly with her hands folded over her lap and her back reflection shown in three different angles in the background mirrors, as if she's being thoroughly scrutinized. While her mother confidently observes her reflection in the mirror, Madoka shrinks at being observed.

I can't say that Madoka’s self-confidence is worryingly low given what we’ve been presented with—while she lacks the self-assurance her mother possesses, she doesn’t seem particularly self-deprecating. While her affirmation that no one looks her way reflects that self-consciousness, Madoka doesn't further put herself down. Instead, it could simply be that she's a teenager only now discovering her identity, what she's comfortable with, what she wants and what place can she carve for herself in this world. Her mother advises her to train the image and behaviors of someone confident as a first step to grow more certain of herself. The scene places emphasis on the process of purposefully building the image you project, which becomes relevant as episode two's layouts play with a reflection motif around talks of desire.

While thinking back on Kyubey’s proposal of granting them one wish in exchange of risking their lives, Madoka ponders about what she wants. Her waffling contrasts to her mother’s immediate, cutting response concerning pragmatic concerns from her work life when Madoka echoes the question to her. Although, of course, her mother lacks the whole context that makes the decision heightened, Madoka’s roof talk with Kyubey and Sayaka reinforces that there isn’t anything she wishes for that strongly. Yet.

Additionally, when Madoka proposes a bigger ambition to her mother (“Wouldn’t you rather become CEO yourself?”), the image her mother projects into the mirror changes drastically into a more fierce and dangerous look, complete with the repetition of her labeled make-up symbol. This ties a connection between the image people project and what they desire. And just like Madoka has a rather inhibited persona, so do her desires appear mild.

This takes us to Mami, their helpful senpai.

Knowing the spoilers that Homura is trying to save Madoka from death via time loops and preventing her from forming a contract with Kyubey has an interesting effect— that is, it casts suspicion over other characters. Mami is the helpful senpai that shows up in the nick of time to save them from the witch, heals Kyubey, explains the situation to them and even promises to protect them from Homura at school. She also offers to show them the fieldwork so they can make up their mind about whether to become contracted! The earlier, careful portrayal around purposeful appearances and the reflection motif repeating during their talk can’t be coincidence. Clearly, she wants to be seen as someone who’s dependable, and whether this has more sinister implications or is stemming from personal wishes is unclear to me yet. Mami feels more like Kyubey’s sales associate than anything else. “You can come observe” it’s the pitch you give someone unsure whether to join a club so you can lure them further in. She’s encouraging them to take on a responsibility that can have rather grim outcomes, despite her early assertion that magical girls don’t necessarily work together to reap the rewards of fighting witches—a statement that further reinforces the narrative of Homura as an antagonistic force to our young heroines. Mami either is very upstanding and thinks it’s a duty they should take on since they were chosen or there is something deeply fishy going on here.

For all intents and purposes, Mami is a completely separate entity to our young heroines, not unlike Homura. She’s the one who’s a magical girl already, they’re the uninitiated. They sit on the same side of the table, opposite to her. This shot emphasizes their separation through the black leg of that foreground furniture.

There’s clearly a lot we don’t know about her.

Isn’t it just so fun how this reflection shot obscures her face? Like she’s covering it with her hands in sorrow. Seems charged that it coincides with her explanation about witches causing suicide and murder, does she know of someone who was a victim of them? OR better yet, someone who became One?

I know that magical girls become witches in this series, which also poses interesting possibilities…

Are my suspicions on Mami’s intentions totally off-mark? I have no idea, but it’s incredibly fun to doubt her lol

Speaking of despair lore, I usually raise my eyebrow—think it’s full of shit— when there’s worldbuilding that links suicide and violence to supernatural entities; it’s a run-of-the-mill battle shonen explanation, Noragami also uses it with Ayakashi as amalgamation of negative feelings and energy from the people of the places they haunt. Now, this could still work on an allegorical sense of how oppressive environments lead to such emotional outcomes, since most stories don’t engage with the structural causes of such problems… It can be that, or end up attributing a metaphysical cause as the source of all darkness without even so much extending understanding and sympathy to the people who suffer from it. Where does Madoka Magica fall, I wonder…

Blessed fools.

Given our young heroines lack of direction, ardent ambitions or anguishing desires, Sayaka muses that perhaps the fact they don’t have anything they’d die for is a sign they’re blessed fools. This rings true for Madoka. She’s a happy kid with a supportive family and friends. Despite her longing for something more—her own agency? confidence? Romantic love?—, there doesn’t seem to be anything that is making her actively miserable. Her mild adolescent ennui is not necessarily something pernicious and would’ve likely resolved itself as she experienced and tackled more challenges in her life with the guidance and support of her family. This whole business paints more ill-fated for her (and I mean, I know it is. What a tragedy, hers).

But is this true for Sayaka? This brief shot with its ominous red sky and its bedridden figure shrouded in darkness begs to differ… The fact she feels guilty over being chosen, thinking there’s people who’d make use of a miracle much better than them makes me think it’s rather someone she knows… Is this her motivation to get into Kyubey’s magical girl agency? I don’t have a lot to go by…

Sayaka and homoeroticism.

The Girl Talk in episode one continues as we follow Madoka’s commute to school with her two friends: the blue one, the to-be Magical Girl, Sayaka and this one random girl that I'm surprised it's even there. The banter and physicality to Sayaka and Madoka’s interactions is fun and warm, selling their chemistry as friends. And near the end, Sayaka playfully proclaims Madoka must be with her, which immediately brought to mind Revolutionary Girl Utena’s Shinohara Wakaba's own ambiguous, very physically affectionate date-play with Utena.

Rather than being a maiden in the sidelines, however, Sayaka is positioned as Madoka’s protector against Homura. Given Homura is fighting to be Madoka’s silent protector herself, this is unbelievably funny to me. When Madoka finds Homura's staring off-putting during P.E., she hides behind Sayaka. When Madoka— with Kyubey in her arms— is alone facing the inscrutable, darkness-shrouded, threatening Homura, the one who shows up to save her is Sayaka. When they're alone within the creepy labyrinth, Sayaka protectively embraces Madoka. When Madoka is worried that Homura might try to attack them at school, Sayaka offers to punch Homura. This antagonistic placing of Madoka's two protectors is hilarious, and I'm curious to see if the dynamic fizzles out as we delve into Sayaka's innermost wishes and struggles or if the tension will boil over into something interesting.

'Get behind me, Madoka! I got the fire extinguisher!'

Such a hilarious way to break the tension.

The show acknowledges the homoeroticism between the two in a tongue-in-cheek manner during their commute in episode 2, when their normie friend feels put off by the apparent intimacy of their silent (telepathic) communication:

"You've been staring so intently into each other's eyes… What on earth did you do after I left yesterday?!"

This girl is too homophobic to become a magical girl, smh.

Madoka points out that their normie friend's remarks sound a lot like what Sayaka tells to her on a regular basis, lending credence to my Wakaba comparison lol This gag could simply be an acknowledgement of the charged homoeroticism present in the series, but it still amuses me so far a lot of it has circled around Sayaka and Madoka.

Akemi Homura

Her soundless, despaired scream as she catches sight of Madoka with Kyubey was so cinematic ❤️

Speaking of homoeroticism, it's time to talk about Homura. I actually felt a little sad that I already know about her motivations because she's so incredibly off-putting, I'd have had a lot of fun speculating about the meaning of her actions, the way she's framed and the meticulous way her micro expressions are portrayed. However, it's not like there isn't still some room to have fun reading into them. She enters the picture via the classic transfer student trope. From her introduction alone, she creates an awkward atmosphere with the way the standoffish silence lingers due her laconicism.

Despite her aloof demeanor, and in pure transfer-student fashion, Homura still stands out both in academics and physical feats (she even breaks the regional high jump record lol!); as such garners the attention of her peers. Nonetheless, she couldn't be more uninterested in them, as the one she can't keep her eyes off is Madoka. Her taciturn, blank-faced and cutting demeanor can paint her staring as downright aggressive. This is further reinforced by being color coded with the darkest values in the cast so far: black and purple are her signature colors, classic villain palette.

Her conversation with Madoka as she rehashes the "could you show me where the infirmary is" routine is the big standout of hers in episode one —the tropey nature of this encounter makes it very easy to imagine how their first interactions went down the first time—. The low angle that emphasizes her head tilt and the accentuated shadows on her face and body make her look haughty and intimidating.

She's literally staring down Madoka lol Worth noting this same framing is repeated as she warns Madoka in a few minutes, complete with rotating animation for gravitas, contributing to Homura's bad vibes.

While one could think that the reason she approached Madoka was to issue her warning, I'm actually not that certain. It could be due the way her anguished reactions to being around Madoka make her look quite erratic as she tortures herself with these distorted echoes of her memories—but I also have to point out the abrupt way she brings the interaction to a halt, stomping and suddenly turning. The way she behaves through the whole interaction feels quite impulsive, which gave me the impression of Homura purposefully trying to recreate the past (whether out of indulgence or to torture herself, I'm not really sure).

It's really fun the way this obscured close-up to her profile hiding her eyes— making it difficult to parse her emotions— paired to how the next highlighted extreme close-ups have her clenching her teeth led credence to the "Homura is a hostile party" narrative. Personally, the timing is what gets me. She reacts deeply upset to the fact Madoka politely yet impersonally addresses her as "Akemi-san" lol This girl was in the trenches.

The way the timing makes it seem like she's really pissed at Madoka’s remark that her name is weird + subsequent fumbling is very funny lol I wouldn't say she's not upset from it, but mostly in the "it's painful to be around you" way.

There's a lot of natural verticals in the panels of their classrooms and the windows they transverse that create visual divisions between the two. I found it particularly noteworthy that while there's a natural sense of distance and awkwardness between the them, Homura is the one who accentuates it and fully brings herself to the other side of the threshold when she suddenly skips forward ahead from Madoka. The idea she's intentionally cultivating a distance between the two is very intriguing and appealing…

Their sitting order reinforces this idea, situating Homura all the way to the front, completely out of reach.

They look fully at odds with each other thanks to the high contrast between the bright windows and the shaded frames. The dark values to their visual barriers fully bring out the tension brought by Homura's sudden halt-and-turn as she issues her warning. Homura is framed as thoroughly oppositional to Madoka, and she herself doesn't bother to correct any misunderstandings. It's pretty interesting she's fine with being vilified if it might grant her any slight chance to get what she wants.

Odd ends.

There's a lot of small gestures that really bring out charm to the interactions and feelings, but if I pointed out absolutely everything, I'd never finish this lol

There's one thing from the Madoka-wakes-up Bank I do want to point out, though: the odd feeling Madoka’s head turn with the hard shading gives me. Now, I know it's a Shaft™ thing, I've watched another TV series directed by Shinbo that was produced there and I've heard of it. But I still find the timing peculiar— after the opening sequence with her running to the rooftop in episode one and the brief recap with Mami's transformation in the second, just before she wakes up. Of course, this reinforces that sense of being at the verge of waking up from an odd dream, which Madoka fully believes, but it can also get a sense of deja vu. Typically, one would assume that Madoka’s run towards the rooftop is a glimpse to an event that will happen later down the line. But given the nature of this being a time loop and Homura's insistence on preventing Madoka’s death via preventing her contract altogether, which it's implied to happen in that sequence, I don't think there isn't any reason to think that it's not something that didn't already happen. If this ends up being the case, I'm curious how that'd affect further loops.

Expectations for the rest of the introductory arc:

-Second half of episode 2 will end in a cliffhanger that'll destabilize routine while they fight a new witch.

-Said cliffhanger will involve Mami (I HOPE IT DOES). I'm suspicious of her and hope she does something terrible, but I think it's equally, if not more, likely that something terrible happens to Her lol

I'm also half-expecting to be wrong about nothing making Madoka miserable, mostly because I've been obsessing over Takamachi Nanoha, another seemingly well-loved, normal kid who turned out to have Important Baggage lol

making this stupid fucking image got me thinking, so uhhhh... here's the main ninjago characters as different sonic species!!

Kai & Nya - Hedgehogs

Kai is probably the most similar to Sonic out of the main cast— and he was arguably the main character for the first five seasons— so it just makes sense to me that he'd be a hedgehog. Plus, his hair is is spiky like a hedgehog too! And Nya is a hedgehog too because, well...siblings. Duh.

Jay - Babylonian/Blue Jay

C'mon. I had to make him a blue jay. His name is literally Jay and he's blue!! Anyways, it also fits because lighting comes from the sky (likes where birds fly) and, as of Dragon's Rising, he's been an antagonist just like the Babylon Rogues were at first. Maybe that last one's a stretch, but who cares.

Cole - Echidna

Immense strength? Check. Association with nature and/or earth itself? Check. Complex family history? Check.

I rest my case.

Zane - Chameleon/Robot

I had to make at least one of the ninja a chameleon. And thanks to Zane's cloaking abilities, I think it fits him the best. I also considered making him a Gizoid specifically, but they're so closely tied to the Master Emerald and ancient Echidna society that I just don't think it would work. Maybe he's based off data from a Gizoid but he doesn't have quite the same power set, just like Gemerl.

Lloyd - Fox

Tails is best friends with Sonic, so I thought it'd make sense for Lloyd to be a fox so he matched with Kai and Nya. Foxes are also usually either tricksters or wise masters in stories, which fits both Lloyd's younger and older self. Plus, both Lloyd and Tails love MINTS!!!

I could see both Wu and Misako as foxes while Garmadon is part Darkling (aka the Black Arms, aka that evil alien species Black Doom is from). And then maybe the First Spinjitzu Master is a mutant Chao, like Chaos? Which I guess means Chao are dragons in this AU and the Black Arms are Oni, and I just think that's very funny.

Arin - Rabbit

Honestly I just think it'd be cute.

Sora - Cat

Obvious.

Wyldfyre - Sungazer

Sungazers are a type of lizard that were named that way because they stare at the sun when they bask. Lizards are reptiles, like dragons, and they like heat. Also, the little spikes all throughout Trip's design reminds me of Wyldfyre's general untamedness.

The Huntress

Ruby panted as she looked back to the wailing sirens of the city of Vale's police force still searching for her. Her entire day had been one chase after the other since she was arrested by the Atlas military. She wasn't sure how or why she suddenly became a wanted criminal, but she wasn't intending to find out from the inside of a prison cell. So, at her first opportunity, she escaped, and led to her standing before a disabled Paladin mech crumpled before her. And a girl in a black hood standing atop it.

"What?!" Ruby exclaimed.

"It all starts with this," The figure lifted their slender, shadowy arm to reveal a Relic, "an artifact holding the ultimate power~!"

"That's the... Relic of Knowledge!" At this exclamation, the figure took notice of Ruby, silver eyes matching silver eyes. "Now I get it! Everyone seems to think that you're me! So, what are you gonna do with that Relic?" Ruby bolted forward, spiraling towards her dark duplicate. "SAY SOMETHING, FAKE HOOD!"

"JINN!"

Time froze around Ruby, who could only helplessly watch as her doppelganger chuckled while walking past her mid-spiral attack. Ruby landed, leaping backwards to keep from falling over. She shook her head in bewilderment.

"Holy cats, you're fast!" She scrunched her nose. "But that wasn't really your speed, was it? You were just using the magic of the Relic!"

"My name doesn't matter." The figure dangled the lamp in front of them. "I am The Huntress, the most powerful hunter across all Remnants, and I'm done playing with you." There was a clatter, and a flash grenade rolled to Ruby's feet. "FAREWELL!"

Ruby flinched, closing her eyes at just the last minute. As the world came back into view, she saw that her imposter had disappeared. "The Huntress? What kind of huntress is she-"

"GET ON THE GROUND!" A voice barked. "KEEP YOUR ARMS SPREAD!"

"Huh?" Suddenly, Ruby was surrounded by Atlas military. "Ugh... Not again..."

(Fun Fact!: This is an Evil Ruby I'm working on)

Silver Ruby

The city, if not the whole world was in peril! MANA, the arcane entity sealed away long ago and now released by Cinder's group, absorbed the magic of the Relics and had become a being as powerful, if not more powerful than the Brothers themselves! Upon doing so, it began to warp reality itself, causing buildings to collapse and pure magic to flow through the streets. All the misery and pain being spread had attracted a large amount of Grimm as well, only making things even more difficult!

"This isn't just a nightmare..." Ruby had been separated by her team, who split up to search for survivors. She gripped her scythe with frustration. "This is so much worse!"

High above, dipping low from the dark clouds was a massive airship. Painted along the hull was a familiar jack-o-lantern, clear proof of who was piloting the airborne war machine. And if it wasn't, the voice of the man himself dispelled any confusions.

"Good thing someone left the keys in this thing~!" Roman Torchwick chuckled. "Regardless, I don't appreciate giant monsters ruining my plans to have fun with this city! Neo, fire at will!"

Rockets, missiles, heavy guns, and just about everything that wasn't an outright city-sweeper was launched at the magical creature! Unfortunately, it did little to deter the monster, serving only to fuel its rage! Opening its maw, it unleashed a powerful beam of energy at the ship, slicing the most powerful weapon wielded by the Kingdom of Atlas like a hot knife through cold butter!

Fortunately, or unfortunately, Roman could be seen clinging to Neo as they drifted away to safety.

"That does it!" Ruby stepped forward, roaring at the massive beast. "What gives you the right to do all of this?!" Suddenly, a small, green light drifted towards the young reaper. "Oh! It's you! You're the one who sealed Mana away in the first place!" The small man appeared as if out of thin air. "Mini-Pin!"

"My magic was the one to seal away Mana." The small Ozpin explained. "Even now, he's filled with naught but rage and sorrow. He's done great harm to this city, and if this continues, it will only cause greater harm to the world at large! Same as before!"

With a mighty bellow, Mana scattered the Relics far from them, each a drained husk of what they once were. Ruby's attention was drawn to Mana, whose cries seemed to sound different now. Ozpin clicked his cane to the floor, angered by the sudden change. "We must seal him once more before it's too late!"

"But what will that change?" Ruby asked, notably calmer than she was before. "He'll still be the same as when he was sealed the last time, right? Being angry doesn't just away like that! He'll just be trapped with those feelings forever!"

"What choice do we have?!" Ozpin asked, jumping into the air and waving his cane around.

"Ruby!" She turned to see Jaune run up to her with his team, a now dull Relic in his hands. "Here, take this!"

Behind Ruby, her team arrived with Relics of their own in each of their hands. "Hey, guys! What's up?"

"Mana only drew on the negative magic from the Brother of Darkness." Blake explained as she held out another Relic. "Ruby, you should be able to harness their real power!"

"I don't like throwing my little sister out like this, but Blake's onto something with this." Yang huffed.

"Ruby, you're the only one." Weiss said, her eyes meeting Ruby's with... something she hadn't seen in them before? Expectancy? Pleading? Worry? Maybe it was just her imagination, especially since she couldn't focus with all the people around her cheering her name.

"Yay, Ruby~!"

"Go, Ruby~!"

"Ruby~! Ruby~! Ruby~!"

"Negative magic isn't the only way to empower the Relics." Blake explained further. "Our joys and hopes can also make them work!"

The four Relics swirled around Ruby, filling her with an energy she'd never felt before. It felt more powerful than aura, like it was protecting her from within as well as from outside of her body. She felt invincible as silver energy coated her hair and clothes into a protective barrier, with silver flames burning in her eyes.

Without another word, she launched forward.

(Fun Fact!: I had trouble deciding between live-action Sonic 2, for comedy, and Sonic X for nostalgia. I think I made the right choice on this one.)

The Girl Who Eased Fear

Ruby zoomed through the forest, finally breaking free from the trees and into the open road leading to the city. Someway, somehow, she'd found herself transported to the world inside her mother's old storybook. Clinging to her back was the Blade of Omens, a legendary sword held only by those doomed to fall in the most tragic of ways. Not that Ruby was concerned with what the magic weapon had to say about it.

"That was close." Spoke the blade. "For a moment, I thought the prophecy was sure to come true."

"Well, I'm not ready to die yet." She replied. "Not when there's a family waiting for me back home!"

"And how are you so certain that this family will still be waiting when you arrive?" At this, Ruby didn't say anything. In fact, it seemed like she wasn't listening. "What's wrong?"

"Do you hear that?"

"WAAAAAAAAAH~!"

Ruby bolted into the city, finding a crowd dancing and cheering around a crying child. The boy, weeping under a pile of pigeons, had nearly cried a literal river into the streets. Leaping over the men and women still celebrating, Ruby landed next to the boy and carefully lifted the pigeons off of him one-by-one.

"Are you okay?!" Ruby asked once enough birds were plucked free from the boy.

"I'm supposed to be the next king, but I don't know what I'm supposed to do!" The youth answered with tears streaming just as hard as before. "I've never been this scared before!"

"Where's your mom?"

"I... I don't know, but..." The boy sniffed. "I... I really wish she was here~! WAAAAAAAAAH~!"

Ruby grit her teeth as she looked at the lad. He was so small, so weak, and yet... She couldn't stop seeing herself crying in him. Back when she'd lost her own mother. Ruby knelt down and wiped some tears from his eyes.

"Do you know where your mom is?"

"She... She's at home..." He whimpered. "At the foot of the mountains."

"Alright." Ruby nodded, standing tall. "I'm on it."

"Halt! Halt, I say!" The Blade of Omens barked. "Don't tell me you intend to run off to find a single person to placate this crying child!"

"Nope!" Ruby gripped the blade and turned to the mountains. "We are~!"

"But what of your mission now?! You will never before sundown!"

"Probably not," Ruby chuckled, "but I'm not the kind of girl to leave someone crying in the street without helping them!" She sped off in a flurry of petals. "Never forget that!"

The boy-king looked to where the girl ran, in awe of the brave hero who'd come to his rescue. She jumped in the air, turning to call back to him.

Until We Meet Again, Ruby Rose...

"Ruby Rose!" Ruby turned to see all of her friends standing expectantly in front of her. Weiss lead the charge, standing in front of everyone else. "What's this I hear about you having a doppelganger?"

"A what?"

"Y'know?" Yang asked. "Big Ruby?"

"Oh, her! Yup!" Ruby giggled. "She just left. But holy cats, you guys won't believe the adventure we've been on!"

"What exactly was this 'Big Ruby' like?" Blake asked.

"Was she cool?" Sun asked.

"Cooler than Winter?" Neptune added.

"HEY!" Weiss and Winter exclaimed in unison.

"Ice cold~!" Ruby cheerfully confirmed.

"Was she fiery like me?" Yang asked, her semblance kicking in for effect, making Jaune leap away and into the water.

"She was hotter than the sun~!" Ruby pointed to the sky, leaving Sun to sulk a bit.

"Did she fly?" Blake asked, patting Sun on the back.

"All over the place~!" Ruby zipped around with her semblance, scattering petals everywhere. "Faster and higher than I ever could~!"

"Was her weapon sharp?" Pyrrha asked.

"I was worried she'd cut ME in half~!" Ruby laughed, patting Crescent Rose.

"She sounds like a superhero!" Nora exclaimed. "No, wait; LIKE A SUPERNOVA~!" She inhaled. "Did she shine like one?"

"I almost went blind looking at her~!" Ruby beamed. The crowd around her seemed pleased by her remarks, murmuring their excitement to meet Big Ruby again. "There might be a whole bunch of Grimm out there, but there's only ONE Ruby Rose... Uh, a-aside from me, of course~!"

'I decided to tell everyone about you, Big Ruby, even the people who never got to meet you. I wanna make sure I never forget you. Thank you for everything you have done for me, and for us, and I hope to meet you again...'

(Fun Fact!: I prefer the DS Sonic Colors over the console versions. And this interaction [which I think is only on the DS] is proof of why)
