I know this has already been said and Iā€™m super late, but Mia as the protag of RE8 would have been so good. The contrast between Mia, the Lords, and Mother Miranda would have been absolutely interesting. I'm shoving everything under a read more because damn I have so many thoughts about Mia.
Lady Dimitrescu is a woman that cannibalizes and drinks the blood of her servants and intruders. On top of that, she tortures before preying on them. She does this willingly and very much derives pleasure from doing so. Lady Dā€™s gothic triplets hunt any poor fool that wanders in. Itā€™s a fun family activity for them just as much as itā€™s for sustenance.Ā
Do you know what this parallels? The Baker family under Evelineā€™s control. They patrol the estate and anyone who rejects the ā€œgiftā€ either ends up molded or on the dinner table. This family also partakes in a fucked up version of a family dinner, eating the victims that refused their little girlā€™s ā€œgift.ā€Ā
However, a major difference between the Baker and Dimitrescu family is their willingness to participate in these activities. A family of cannibals; one forced while the other relishes in it.Ā
Mia is still very traumatized by her three years in the Bakerā€™s estate. Breaking into the castle to find her daughter would force her back. Hello to all the emotions that come with those memories, the ones Mia has been trying to forget. The harder you try to forget something, the more you think about it. What better way to make Mia acknowledge Dulvey, Louisiana than by forcing her into something so similar?Ā
And while sheā€™s still reeling from remembering her time in captivity, why not push her a bit further down memory lane with House Beneviento? Mia has demonstrated at multiple points in RE7 that she does care about other lives. She lies to Ethan to keep him from getting caught up in her work. She tries to save Alan and crew members of "The Annabelle" (the crew members are a bit more indirect, she mainly focused on Alan) by containing Eveline. After Jack finds her, Mia keeps her distance to keep from infecting them while trying to write a warning. She tries her hardest during RE7 to save Ethan.Ā
Miaā€™s hallucinations could center on her guilt. The failure to stop Eveline and the lives ruined as a result. How she was always too late to help anyone. Ethan curing her, a criminal, over Zoe, the person helping him. Leaving Zoe behind in the shattered remains of her home and family. Surviving. Visions of Ethan hinting at his ā€œconditionā€ could lure her to the manor. A little nudge to the whole ā€œhe was mold the entire timeā€ plot twist without fully giving it away.Ā
Moreau, lacking in self worth and very attached to a woman who doesnā€™t give him the time a day, yet still he considers her as his mother. Most of his actions are for the attention and validation from his ā€œmother.ā€ No matter what Moreau does, heā€™ll never have her affection or time. Itā€™s sad, isnā€™t it? To witness a man try so hard only to be rejected. And isnā€™t that familiar? Mia once felt compassion for someone with similar traits.Ā
Remember the little girl who considered you her mother? The one that spent three years waiting for you to love her after you promised? The one you had a hand in killing? What makes you think you could ever be a good mother after what you did? Why are you trying so hard to save Rose when you didnā€™t even extend the same courtesy to Eveline?
Yā€™all know how Miaā€™s past is a mystery? Like why she was working for the Connections and how she was even recruited and all that. Heisenberg would be a great way to explore it. A man taken, forced into becoming something else, and stuck in a family he doesnā€™t want. Mia can relate. He wants to use her daughter as a weapon. She was willing to let another child be used as a weapon. Theyā€™re alike, so surely Mia would be willing to side with him.
But Heisenberg is cocky and Mia isnā€™t the person she was prior/during 7. Even if she was on board with using Eveline as a weapon to end all wars or whatever bullshit the Connections told her, sheā€™s not willing now. Not after what sheā€™s seen and been through. This section could be Heisenberg goading her through the tvs/intercoms about her past to change her mind with Mia remaining steadfast in her refusal.
And then thereā€™s Mother Miranda. Two mothers trying to get their daughters back through vastly different means. Because of the group photo showing Mia and Miranda with Eveline this encounter can go one of two ways.Ā
Miranda and Mia know each other and have worked together before. Whether it be on the E-Series Project (with Mia becoming the caretaker and spending copious amounts of time at the lab) or though some other means at work.Ā
Theyā€™ve only briefly met when the Connections were in a hurry to transport Eveline.
Either way, Miranda would compare them. As a mother, Mia must understand what sheā€™s trying to accomplish. Would Mia not do the same as she? Maybe at this point Miranda shows she killed Ethan to demoralize to prevent her from interfering with the ceremony. Tells her sheā€™s too late once again and to give Rose to her because sheā€™ll be the superior mother.
Idk, I guess you could switch to Ethan instead of Chris so he can still have Eveline tell him heā€™s moldy. But heā€™s a stubborn man and he forces himself back to weaken Miranda so Mia can kill her. Chris shows up and Ethan does the same thing he did at the end by blowing himself up with Chris forcing Mia (with Rose) on the helicopter. That way the Shadow of Rose DLC can still be about Rose and Ethan.Ā
TLDR; Mia should have been the protagonist because it would have allowed us to explore her character and background more. It was a missed opportunity especially since so much of RE8 centers around mothers. It would have played out better as closing off the Winters Family saga as well since we could have tied the loose ends that came with Miaā€™s mysterious past.

I'll be posting this to ao3 ltr when i have a good title in the works. Pls do lmk if you have any suggestions as i mull it over,
...
fuck i didn't think of a summary either UHHHHH
Summary:
It's a simple enough backstory. It followed the formula you'd expect from most prodigies pre-Supernova. Experience a traumatic event, survive, get your powers, and the rest is history. How all the heroes in this damned city advertise their origins. Like a comic book. A cheesy, edgy, comic book. At least some prodigies have the common sense to keep their melodrama to themselves. Magpie did.
Or: I gave Maggie another internal monologue that MM loves to write her renegades trilogy characters doing, 1) cuz its fun 2) I have a lot of hcs I want to get out and have no idea how Maggie would tell this to other characters in a one shot
I'll write the longer fic ltr ITS TIME FOR MAGGIE MONOLOGUE
word count: roughly 1500
If she was good at anything, it was surviving. Her bullet was proof of that.
Proof of a day she couldn't remember, but still existed. Had to exist.
A day defining her every waking moment, every breath. A day providing the reason for the smallest scar just by her hairline.
Magpie did.
Who would she even tell? Who would even care? No one did before. It took her years to realize no one gave a shit about her case. From the Renegadesā€™ messy crime scene analysis to the witnesses of her miraculous survival.
No double-checking for survivors. For her. They just gave up. And certainly no one could be bothered to alert the Renegades of their error when she was found.
She supposed the latter made sense, given it was still the Age of Anarchy at the time. Everyone had enough on their plates at the time. One more orphaned kid wasn't special. And never would be. Those tragedies tend to lose their effect on peopleā€™s hearts after enough of them.
Sometimes, depending on the day, her heart ached a little more in her chest to think about her sister. The occasional query, the itch she couldn't scratch, wondering what happened. If she was out there wondering about her too. Wanting her when no one else did.
Maggie never liked to entertain those thoughts for very long. They didnā€™t change anything. Her sister either ran away or got herself kidnapped, and neither fate spelled good things for her. Even if it was once a nice thought; the idea her sister beat those odds and was coming to get her. Especially during hard nights at the orphanage.
When a roomie couldnā€™t get their powers under control to let her sleep, or when another kid got in trouble and was yelled at for an hour after dinner. The orphanage would get flooded and someone would be there to hug her and tell her she doesn't need to be there any longer.
The idea that someone (anyone really, she wasnā€™t picky) was gonna come and break her out. A perfect rescue. Her fabled happily ever after. It didnā€™t lose its appeal. A pitiful, sweet lie.
A lie regardless.
As appealing as it was, she never went long without another foster family reminding her of the truth. Harder to believe more and more after each family that passed through the creaking doors of the shitty buildingā€™s structure. Each potential foster was usually already hesitant to accept a prodigy, but a prodigy thief?
One that could steal your jewelry and family heirlooms and run away to pawn it off who knows where? If you even had any left after the Age of Anarchy. Her odds were never great. Even the rare bleeding hearts that just loved to find ā€œfixer uppersā€ were dissuaded. Her file only spelled trouble.
Even if trouble was a kid willing to do anything for a family, in Maggieā€™s humble opinion. Trouble was a kid with a treasure trove of hidden gifts she had collected over the years for the longest time, to give to her future home. A thank you for the service of accepting her. Let me gift you this part of me! Even if said ā€œpart of herā€ was a pearl necklace from the shop across the street.
She liked pearls.
Not that she could ever be dissuaded from stealing. Adding to her collection, she preferred to call it. The scoldings she received did nothing to change her mind, even if they each were another mark on her file. ā€œStealing is badā€ isn't a very compelling reason to change for a preschooler, it turns out. And they were easy to ignore anyway, especially after the third. Only serving to inform how she got caught. How to do better. The occasional addition of a time out for her punishment didnā€™t help.
Hell, even if they did, there were almost always more important kids to pay attention to than the telekinetic. You wouldnā€™t want the pyromaniac to burn down the building! Or leave the infant amphibian alone for long enough to poison dinner. For the third time. The ones who couldnā€™t control their crazy powers yet.
They also didn't tend to be very popular choices with foster families, but Maggie could hardly feel sorry for them. Everyone in the orphanage knew ever since they could walk the Renegades were always looking for more recruits. Keeping a keen eye on the kids with potential, growing up in their own institution. If one could call such a wreck an ā€œinstitutionā€.
And becoming one of the renegades, while not ideal, was the best escape you could get. It was for her. Even if she traded chores at the Childrenā€™s Home for chores at Renegades HQ. They, of course, loooovved her powers for clean up duty.
It paid. That kept her there. So it wasn't all bad, even if it felt like it most days. They had also attempted to get her a family but Maggie knew from the start it wasn't happening. They let her join regardless. She ran away and pawned off her collection, no point in keeping it any longer, all before her first day.
And she never went back. She never needed to, even after the Renegades found out she wasn't staying with them. She was never prodded about where she lived if not the orphanage, and they didn't need to know. It was a good enough building close by, that's all that mattered.
She remembered squeezing the bullet so tightly after finding the building, checking for any weak points nearby. She can do this. She'll be okay. She's a survivor. Mantras on repeat in her head, the bullet tight in her hand for good luck.
She knew it wouldn't be the same as it was at the children's home. Leaving meant leaving behind a part of herself forever. And she did anyway.
If the day she got her powers wasn't her first death, then the day she ran away was.
She's a survivor, she knows that much. Yet more often than not, parts of herself died over the years. Her original identity died. Whatever her name used to be, she's gone. And Margaret White survived. She survived with such foolish hope that she could ever get any semblance of a normal home. A life she should have gotten.
She would never get it. That was fine. She ran away.
Margaret White became Magpie, one of the youngest Renegades to join at barely 10 years old. She never held back her displeasure with the Renegades, all of them hypocrites. She stole for only herself, until she didnā€™t. And made the same mistake. Having hope. Hope that things could get better, hope that even if the Renegades were shit at their jobs, the means would justify the ends. Hope that she could do something.
And he believed in her. That annoying, cheesy nerd heā€¦ he never should haveā€¦
She gave him that helmet.
She really did think it would change anything.
And now he's dead.
And Magpie is too.
Rotting in that stadium falling apart around her, sinking into the ground as the world continued on and rebuilt without her. The coward stuck behind those stands speckled with blood, a messy paint job. Unable to look, unable to move. Died frozen in place, stiff with the endless rounds of tears burning her eyes.
Her worst nightmares brought her to that place. Where she died. Where she murdered him.
Well, she didn't technically. But it felt like it. The pit in her gut didn't change to know she wasn't the one holding the scythe.
The fault laid between her and Nightmare. Nightmareā€¦ Nova, who dared to proclaim herself as a hero now. Dared to move on. Her corpse should have laid there with him. With Magpie.
Whatever hope Maggie had left in the Renegades died that day. Any faith in their message, rotten. Not everyone can be a hero, some just aren't built for it. Relying on others, trusting others, gets you killed. She should have known better.
That day, she peeled away from the spot Magpie's breaths stopped, and told herself she would know better now. She'll be better. She doesn't need anyone. She never did. Gripping the bullet tightly in her palm, that's what she told herself as she took shaky steps to the remains of the exit. She would survive, even when everyone else died from their foolishness.
Some people aren't cut out to be heroes, even if they tried.
Some people were meant to prosper at others expense.
Some people lived, even when others died.
They died, they lost, and Maggots like her needed to be okay with that. Their loss meant her benefit. She wonā€™t let the inverse happen.
Some people are villains, and always were always meant to be.

AU where (I've never played Valhalla, bear with me) Aletheia had been lying out her ass about the whole "heir of memories must save the world from the- *spins wheel* ...magnetic field" and the whole thing was a ruse to deliver the staff (and thus, Aletheia) to someone more susceptible to Isu brain manipulation who would do as told and die to revive Basim
Imagine Layla and Desmond in the Grey finding this out and losing their shit, then starting a revenge plot through time to kick Aletheia's ass and free Kassandra (Layla), seduce save some of their ancestors/fellow Assassins along the way (Desmond), and try to keep these two near gods from destroying reality (Clay, whose brain is still a bit fried and doesn't know how he's here but he knows these two idiots are somehow his problem)
It would be fun if it was Clay who told them about Aletheiaā€™s true nature. Hell, if you want to fully kick Aletheia to the villain category, maybe the whole ā€˜Yggdrassil problem becoming the next catastropheā€™ had been her doing in some way, to force Layla to give up her life and Desmond, as the Reader, didnā€™t see it in the Calculations because he was, after all, not exactly Desmond Miles anymore. To be more accurate, he wasnā€™t entirely human anymore so he had ignored the ā€˜emotional elementā€™ of the Calculations.
Clay could have woken up because he felt Layla and she was an anomaly in the sense that she wasnā€™t meant to die and become part of the Gray in the first place.
It would be Clay and Layla who makes the plan to screw up the timelines to kick Aletheiaā€™s ass and set up the Grand Temple to automatically turn on without the need of anyone operating it on December 21, 2012.
The Reader says that the possibility of success is too low to even try and Layla suggests they find a way for the Reader to regain his humanity and be Desmond Miles once more.
Clayā€™s grin is full of mischief as he goes ā€œOh, I have an idea how we can get this idiot back to his old self.ā€
Cue in Layla and Clayā€™s ā€œLetā€™s Fuck Up The Timeline To Save The World!ā€ plan begins.
Layla insists that the best way to fuck up Aletheiaā€™s plans is to destroy the damn polestick (ā€œIsnā€™t it a-ā€ ā€œShhhh, weā€™re calling it a polestick now.ā€ ā€œYeah, okay.ā€) before it could get in the hands of Kassandra.
Clay suggests they just punch an old man and take the polestick. Layla is a bit hesitant about that since there was this whole thing about Pythagoras and Kassandra getting into some kind of resolution before he gives the polestick to Kassandra and Kassandra deserves that.
Clay then suggests they hijack the Atlantis memory thing that Kassandra goes thru and take the polestick from Kassandra. Layla says no to that one too since Kassandra would kick their asses.
Clay snorts and points at the Reader with his thumb as he says, ā€œNot this guy.ā€
ā€œThere is a-ā€
ā€œFuck the probabilities. Weā€™ll tag team her while Layla runs away with the polestick, okay? All we have to do is keep her busy until the polestick is destroyed.ā€
ā€œCan you two even handle Kassandra?ā€
ā€œIā€™ll have you know we are certified Bleeding Effect graduatesā€¦ in the sense that the Bleeding Effect has effectively fucked us over.ā€ (sees Laylaā€™s expression) ā€œWhich just means Kassandra would have two Ezio Auditores to deal with. Itā€™ll be fun.ā€
Cue the trio trying to get Kassandra to lower her guard enough for Layla to take the polestick by pretending to be citizens of Elysium.
Their chance finally comes whenā€¦
It became clear Kassandra was flirting with Layla.
ā€œI think you should sleep with her for the betterment of mankind.ā€
ā€œWhat.ā€
ā€œPlease, youā€™ll like it. Weā€™ll steal the polestick while sheā€™s busy with you.ā€
ā€œOh my god. What are you talking about? I am not having sex with Kassandra!ā€
ā€œYou want to though. This would be the two birds one stone kind of deal.ā€
ā€œClay, shut up.ā€
ā€œHey, Reader, whatā€™s the success possibility of us getting the polestick if Layla has sex wth Kassandra?ā€
ā€œEighty-nine percent.ā€
ā€œSee? Thatā€™s the highest success rate weā€™ve ever got! You gotta take one for the team, Layla.ā€
ā€œOh my god.ā€
Of course, Layla does agree because, letā€™s face it, she wanted to get some with Kassandra anyway. Then Aletheia starts screaming bloody murder and Kassandra realized something is up.
Cue a chase scene where Clay and the Reader are both running for their lives while Kassandra runs after them and Layla runs after Kassandra.
Some clothes might be missing during the chase.
This is when Clay gets a bright wonderful idea to start Phase 2 of the plan and opens a new portal for another time period.
Kassandra enters the portal as well.
And Layla has no idea where they were. Considering the building architecture she just saw, she was betting somewhere where there were a lot of Muslims?
Oh, godā€¦
They were being chased by knights with-
Oh shit.
They were knights!
She barely heard Clay say, ā€œYour turn, Reader!ā€
And Clay gives the polestick to the Reader before bodyslamming him straight to a trio of monk-
No.
Assassins.
Oh shit.
Layla remembered those robes.
They were the Assassin robes worn by the Levantine Brotherhood.
The Reader falls on top of one of the Assassins and Clay hides behind the other two as he points at Kassandra, ā€œBrothers! That woman is trying to get an artifact that the Brotherhood has been protecting!ā€
Oh god.
Oh my god.
Clay was insane.
The knights have also caught up to them.
And they were now surrounded andā€¦
Wait.
Layla focused his attention to the Reader and the Assassin he had toppled and they were still in the ground, staring at each other.
What.
The.
Fuck.
Unorganized Notes:
Clay specifically opened a portal that brought them to Jerusalem just before AltaĆÆr, Malik and Kadar infiltrated Solomonā€™s Temple.
Clayā€™s mighty plan to bring Desmond back can be summarized as ā€œget the Reader to remember how much Desmond Miles loved his ancestorsā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ and maybe get him laidā€¦ that might helpā€¦ weā€™ll play it by ear.ā€
AltaĆÆr would be adamant that it wasnā€™t love at first sight but there wasā€¦ this strange connection that he couldnā€™t shook off the moment their eyes met.
The Reader will admit that he did feel somethingā€¦ ā€˜foreignā€™ when he saw AltaĆÆr and he agrees that Clay might be on the right track.
Layla is just confused because Clayā€™s usual plan seems to be to get her and the Reader laid.
Clay doesnā€™t deny it.
Kassandra becomes a reluctant ally of theirs because she is stranded in this timeline while they charge up their ā€˜portal juiceā€™. Layla was sure that portal juice was not an actual thing.
The way their time hopping mechanics work is that they need a POE to charge it up and it will completely drain the POE afterwards. For their first portal jump, it was a freebie because they were in the Gray and it had the same ā€˜power sourceā€™ the POEs have. Clay even explains that the Gray is where the main power source of the POEs come from and the Isus just found a way to harness and store it in the POEs.
So they need a new POE to use to get Kassandra back to her time. Layla suggests they use the Apple in Jerusalem but the Reader goes ā€œNo.ā€. This is the first time the Reader had been adamant in his opinion about how the Apple belongs to AltaĆÆr and no one else. Layla stares at Clay with an expression of ā€œholy shit, Clay may be up to something with this whole getting someone to fuck the Reader to bring back Desmond Milesā€ and Clay just grins at her as if to say ā€œIā€™m a genius right?ā€. It should be noted that, at this point, the Reader have not yet been fuckedā€¦ yet.
That is how far I got because, okay, so my problem is if we continue with the idea that theyā€™re trying to save (and seduce) Desmondā€™s ancestors (and fellow Assassins), this will be bittersweet since itā€™s like Desmond would have a relationship with some of them and then break up with them given a long-distance relationship was not viable.
Of course, considering how I write AltaĆÆr, I wouldnā€™t be surprised if this ends up with the trio going their merry way screwing up the timeline by timehopping and then they later find out that AltaĆÆr had been following them, looking for Desmond, and had been getting stubborn tagalongs along the way who were also looking for Desmond because heā€™s always a few steps behind the trio. (In other words, Desmondā€™s harem has been growing and chasing after him the entire time)
Thisā€¦ would be the kind of idea that Clay would definitely be on board with.
Althoughā€¦ considering the Reader is meant to have a connection to the possibilities, this meant that he should have seen this possibilityā€¦ and did nothing to stop it. Which meansā€¦ he wanted AltaĆÆr to find the others and chase after him. XD
