the outsiders musical did NOT do it for johnny: a rant

just saw the outsiders musical for my birthday! despite what the title might make you think I did have a great time watching it. all of the actors were incredible, the songs were all pretty good, the choreography was FUCKING insane....it would have been a near perfect experience if not for one niggling thought that kept persisting from the beginning of the show till the end.

where the hell is johnny cade's development?

this is coming from someone who has read the outsider book and watched the movie. johnny got so shafted in the musical I feel. both his friendships with ponyboy and dally felt underdeveloped, and the church scene was SO weird in this version (cutting from him running in to a triumphant song from the other greasers and then just jump cutting to him in the HOSPITAL?) I know it was probably because they had to apply the burn makeup and everything but it feels so weird.

it feels like they wanted to develop ponyboy's other relationships more (him and cherry and especially him and his brothers) but in doing so johnny got pushed to the wayside.

i feel like the musical heavily relied on the audience having previously seen or read the outsiders so you could just fill in the gaps in johnny's characterization, but I just don't get WHY you would choose not to flesh him out when his character should be the heart of the show! his death felt so much less impactful here than in the book or movie because his connections to ponyboy and dally felt hollower.

do not take this as a critique of sky lakota lynch's performance as johnny either he did INCREDIBLE I wish they gave him MORE TO DO!

It makes my heart feel really soft to see how clearly Brennan LOVES and understands Evan.

In this episode especially, when he had his heart to heart with Jammer, you can see his face screw up and hear his voice get hollow trying not to cry while he was talking, and it was just such an earnest and vulnerable discussion of his love for Jammer and his need for belonging and it was beautiful; I think it was one of my favorite character moments this season. As an actor, that honesty and depth is what we’re always trying to capture, and seeing that made me admire Bleem on a new level. Obviously the man is funny and sharp as a tack—that’s clear in everything he does—but I haven’t seen this skill set in play a lot.

I found an old journal from 10+ years ago and remebered I wrote down some of my OG Créa bg ideas and world building and it was SO amusing to look through bc I was only JUST dipping my toes into tolkien and had NO clue how to navigate lore. I had decent ideas to build on but it’s sooooooo funny being like “damn wtf is this girl this doesn’t work at all” and is somewhat embarrassing but still makes me smile and see how far I’ve come.

the difference btwn irl and online perspective on creativity is so funny to me and idk if I'll ever get used to the stark contrast of it all.

IRL when I mention that I draw and write, people act like I'm some super talented creative genius(???). they don't seem to understand the concept of OCs, and if I try to vaguely touch on my DL project they get visibly overwhelmed no matter how simple I make it for them, and eventually they settle on just insisting that I need to publish traditionally and monetize on it. they don't seem to have the ability to understand the concept of zines and immersive storytelling through non-traditional means.

but then i get online and I'm just another drop in the ocean and always a very mediocre drop at that LMAO, I constantly fight with myself to feel like there is any sort of value to my stories and art, and there's hundreds of people doing the sort of thing that I do but even better than I could ever dream of doing!

it's just so strange going from interacting with this online to IRL, I feel like I'm getting whiplash from being largely ignored or scoffed at online (which I'm fine with btw lol I grew up with that in my family and now I get nervous when I get too much attention) to people at the centre treating me like I'm some kind of artistic genius who cannot be understood because I'm too far above their level 😭

Idea that the Batfam all have a weird talent that isn't really vigilante stuff.

Bruce- is oddly good at remembering dates (hey, Bruce, what's today? "Todays September 27, the day where New York first passed a bill for housing reforms in 1920" ...how do you know that?)

Dick- Really, really good at crocheting, specifically birds, he randomly gifts them out to everyone.

Jason- Can identify any car just by looking at it, doesn't even need to see the logo, he just knows.

Tim- knows at least 13 languages, his parents decided he needed to know them for family and chose other languages so he could take over Drake Industries.

Steph- Speaks perfect pig latin, the one thing Tim can not correctly speak. She's also weirdly good at naming types of random items correctly.

Cass- She's awesome at naming different types of dancing. ( That's a dance from Poland called Oberek. " Have you seen it before Cass?" No.)

Damian- really good at identifying different animals. (No, Todd, that's a borzoi, not a greyhound, you fool.)

Duke- He's really, really good at riddles, puzzles, and overall mind games, and it freaks people out. He's able to solve a rubiks cube in under 15 seconds.
