miscellaneous shadow knight headcanons because i love love love them and one day i will have a proper post dedicated to them.

WARNINGS FOR: cannibalism, murder, minced meat mention?, angst.

in a sick, sad way, shad sees most of the shadow knights as his children.

shadow knights don't necessarily have to kill someone for immortality, but they do have to consume the flesh of someone living.

it doesn't ACTUALLY matter who they target; shad (and gene) just frame it as having to kill your lord or an individual you hold in high regards because 1) getting rid of lords helps in the long run, and 2) shadow knights with attachments to anything other than shad are harder to control. so convincing baby knights to get rid of those obstacles early on saves shad a lot of trouble.

as for how our shadow knight cast handled the munchies...

gene ate his lord as well as the upper-ranks sent with him (which is part of why he ranked up so quickly).

zenix ate his lord in the midst of the fire staged to kill him and his family.

vincent ate his lord/brother but he's still in denial over it (he acknowledges that he's immortal and that this immortality comes from his brother, but in his head, his brother was sick and begging for mercy; in reality, vincent flew into rage after finding out how far his brother had fallen and brutally murdered him).

amethyst attacked her father. he survived and amethyst experienced her first false death; this sparks an influx of rumors and stories about shadow knights (previously, shadow knights were extremely low-key, and only existed as folktales).

vylad attacked zianna. she survived.

sasha attacked castor's brother; castor managed to scare her off, but his brother passed away from the injuries. this is what leads to castor going "mad" and essentially being outcasted :( he was grieving and in denial and couldn't bear to tell laurance, who was grieving both sasha and joh at the time.

glenda was NOT immortal, she was planning to sacrifice cadenza + eat from her while she was still alive but aphmau kicked her ass and then laurance killed her.

and laurance, of course, hasn't attacked anyone, but he does struggle with severe intrusive thoughts and it is very, VERY hard for him not to bite while in his knight form.

shadow knight armor is attached to the skin like a shell. yes, they get parasites. yes, it hurts to have it removed or tugged on the wrong way. yes, it grows out of their skin and yes, that also hurts (only for the baby knights tho).

baby knights (and sometimes even immortal shadow knights) are known known to curl up into the fetal position and shift into their shadow knight form when they're scared. it's a defense tactic that protects their heart, especially since shadow knight armor is so hot/sharp (even to other knights). people unofficially refer to this as "armadillo-ing".

SHADOW KNIGHTS ARE NOT IMMUNE TO LAVA. that shit WILL disintegrate them. HOWEVER, since shadow knights getting perma-deathed by lava in the nether would be really bad design, this just rebirths the knight. the only exception to this is sasha and potentially one other character. some knights have come to see it as a religious thing, like a baptism.

shadow knight hair often turns into flames when they're upset, and if they're really angry, their entire body gets lit. very destructive.

shadow knights can be temporarily paralyzed by brain trauma (usually stabbing something through their head; they'll be mobile again once the object is removed or the injury closes up) and weakened by being doused in water or left in the cold.

baby knights can be killed via holy magic, decapitation, mincing the body, water, the cold, or old age (they actually age much faster in the overworld, but slower in the nether). they can go months without food, water, or sleep before it starts to take a toll on them.

immortal shadow knights cannot truly be killed unless their heart is devoured (more on this on the next point). mostly, their bodies are permanently destroyed and they become a shadow soul. immortal shadow knights do not need food, water, or sleep but will sometimes indulge if they're feeling... nostalgic. or particularly empty.

shadow knights can only absorb power from each other by eating the heart. this is 1) difficult because you have to LITERALLY tear the shadow knight apart to get to their heart, and 2) terrifying even to shadow knights. it's called "the final death". this is why zenix becomes so infamous.

"false deaths" are only experienced by baby knights. baby knights don't ACTUALLY die to most mortal deaths, but because they're not immortal, their body still thinks it needs to take care of itself like usual and tricks the brain into thinking they're dying when they're not (it's similar if they're stabbed or something; the body goes "YOU ARE BLEEDING OUT" and assumes the result is death). when this happens, they go dormant from anywhere between a few minutes to a few days. when they wake, they'll be perfectly fine. no scars, no nothing.

inspired by @/chvsire and some other users i can't find (thanks tumblr)—shadow knights occasionally have traits resembling real-world predators or nether mobs. whether this has a rank/role purpose or just happens, i've not decided lmao.

shadow knights may also be based off biomes. bc pretty.

some ideas for predators that i have are: bird of prey (shad), feline (gene), dog or wasp (laurance), shark or alligator (zenix), snake (sasha)... and then i got nothing LMAO.

immortal shadow knights don't really... reincarnate? they have to be magically assisted in order to cross over the purgatory, where their memories will be locked away and they'll be sent to live again. it's kinda like what death does for sam winchester in supernatural—if they were to push too hard, the memories and power would be fully accessible. this is different for other souls, who face judgement and then are either permitted or forbidden from reincarnating. if they ARE reincarnated, their memories are completely removed. or something. i'll figure it out.

okay fine. headcanon that Phantom has no real sense of personal space.

granted, none of them did when they were first summoned. the pit is not known for personal space, so it really is an abstract concept to learn when summoned.

but Phantom? it's hard for him to adapt to this new concept. he doesn't mean to, and he's getting better at it, but he's a stage level 5 clinger.

when first summoned, if he saw something interesting about one of the ghouls (let's use Rain's gills for this instance), he wouldn't ask. wouldn't say anything. he just immediately went and touched them, fascinated how they seem to have a mind of their own. Rain was... very flustered, and annoyed, to say the least. Phantom was confused and upset when he got told off about it.

He's done it with all the band ghouls, and the worst reaction he got was when he first saw Dew’s hair in all its glory (glory being dried, brushed out, down). he got told off with Rain, he got yelled at by Dew.

but he's getting better. if only by a little; now he asks before he touches someone.

thinking about a Happy Ending scenario where Shen Jiu didn’t actually just cease to exist after Shen Yuan was transmigrated into his body. Instead, sorta like Airplane, he’d been yeeted into the body of a kid and spent the 12 or so years that SVSSS encompasses having, essentially, a normal childhood.

That “dying” returned to Shen Jiu the opportunity that had once been stolen from him -- to start his cultivation journey at the most opportune age. Maybe even to have a real, half-decent mother, if I’m being generous. Though, considering all he already knew, he wouldn’t even really need a teacher!

...and it really did take all twelve of those years to finally muster the courage, at roughly age 18, to find his way back to Cang Qiong mountain. After all, he couldn’t possibly face Yue Qingyuan as a child, could he? He’s still a bit messed up, but twelve years is twelve years. He’s not as angry anymore. Didn’t give up on himself this time.

So, imagine for me if you will, Shen Jiu ascending the mountain, but since he’s in a totally new body... whoever’s on watch duty that day stops him. Of course, they’re incredulous when this young man insists that he has business with the Sect Leader. How could he possibly?

So, in an absolutely foul spirit, Shen Jiu insists that they go to Sect Leader Yue & tell him that there is a man who wishes to speak with his dearest Qi-ge. Except Shen Jiu wasn’t anticipating just how well that ploy would work, because Yue Qingyuan practically stumbles down to mountain to greet him personally.

This, of course, means that Shen Qingqiu Yuan has a lotta explaining to do. 8) Thankfully, though, Shen Jiu absolutely does not want his old body back.

   Shalnark won’t like the answer that Chrollo has to give. His forehead rests against the cool glass, chilled from the rainfall outside and the dawning of night that would chase away the pleasant warmth of the day. Although it would hardly have an effect on him given the weight of his coat. Grey eyes stare outwards, watching raindrops shatter the stillness of puddles and reflected neon lights further down the street. He has half a mind to go out, but that probably would not be something that would help when Shalnark was already intervening.

   In the gloom of outside, Chrollo’s eyes look more like grey tombstones, present yet distant. Something untouchable in them - an ancient god, a disappearing ghost. Slowly however he grounds himself as Shalnark speaks and watches.

Even Kalluto didn’t seem to buy it.    He wasn’t even sure if he believed himself when it came to that. It was, factually, a possibility (willingly or his body giving out), but if he’d CHOOSE that was another matter. This really wasn’t helping his attempts to ease his spiders’ concerns when it came to handling himself outside of missions. He sighs, and there’s something more defeated in that exhale than simple exhaustion.

chicken coop crusaders

Teuton somehow talked the other two orders into horsing around a chicken coop owned by France (bc his idea of fun is pranking the Frenchman lol) but that ended up in them getting chased out by one of Francis' men. Hospitaller is somehow enjoying the chase (tho won't admit it out loud), Templar is guilty af and knows he'll be in serious trouble with Francis and his Grand Master (he's really a shtick for rules), and Teuton gets stale bread thrown at him (bread were HARD back then).

I sometimes get whiplash realizing that they're literally just children burdened with the responsibility of their people and they don't even get normal childhoods bc it's either they conquer or be conquered and sure they don't die and have really fast healing but their weird place in the world gifts them a kind of loneliness that no one but others like them could understand and I get sad about it :(

RIDDLE honestly doesn't know what to do with himself. He never really got the comfort he needed whenever he cried as a child so he had no idea how to comfort you now. He scolds himself internally for not immediately acting and just kind of freezing up beside you so he panics and tries to recall of all the times he saw someone else comforting others in order to end the extremely awkward tension as quickly as possible. He pats your back somewhat rigidly and says "There, there." In an all too awkward manner. You're caught off guard so hard by the sheer akwardness of Riddle's comfort technique that you burst out laughing, troubling Riddle even further. "W...Why are you laughing now?" The dumbfounded expression on his face is the perfect medicine for forgetting your troubles just now. Riddle unintentionally just cheered you up. After the incident, he seemingly becomes less strict with you and starts asking about how you're doing umprompted, which always pleasantly surprises you. Sometimes, Trey even shows up at Ramshackle dorm, holding a tart of your favourite flavour and saying he got orders from Riddle to deliver it to you.

VIL drops his usual strict nature for a bit. Of all people, he would be the one who could tell you were constantly acting strong and unbothered by everything going on around you. He thought of it equal parts admirable as he did foolish. Such intense emotion is not something to keep bottled up inside you and you made him realise that. His expression is surprisingly soft as he places one arm on your back, gently stroking it. He talks you through your feelings with a big sense of maturity and care and you're suprised by just how much he cares for you and your feelings. You don't exactly get that same impression when he's scolding you for not sitting straight or not wearing your uniform properly... regardless, you're very thankful for his words, even the harsher ones about needing to tell someone about things like this. "Tell me, if you must. I will always listen." After the incident, nothing much changes, really. Atleast from the perspective of others. He still gets on your case for not wearing your uniform properly, but he also asks about how you're doing when he gets the chance and does not accept simply "fine" or "okay" for an answer. You simply must elaborate why that is.

KALIM enters big brother mode. He's comforted crying siblings for various reasons before so what makes you any different? He gives you a tight hug, gently rubbing your back and trying to cheer you up with comforting phrases. He'd also try making jokes you to cheer you up and the puns are so bad you might as well start laughing. He didn't even start asking what's wrong but instead waited for you to tell him yourself. He surprised you with how mature (or perhaps just experienced) he is when it comes to crying people. You feel much better even only after a few minutes and you ask Kalim how you can thank him for hearing you out. "Seeing you smile again is reward enough!" He replies and you feel like crying again (but this time not from sadness or stress). After that incident, he always personally invites you to Scarabia parties, hoping they might inject a little joy in your life and keep your mind off things. If you're not a fan of parties, he takes you on carpet rides around the dorm instead.

MALLEUS is shocked into silence. You were smiling at him as sweetly as you always do just a moment ago... He knows how to comfort someone in theory, but now that he has to put it into practice, it feels like he's forgotten everything. He needs to show you that you can rely on him when it comes to your comfort, and that includes crying around him. This might just be one of the most heartbreaking sights he's ever had the displeasure of witnessing. He vows to himself that he never wishes to see you cry again (unless it's at your wedding) and would do anything to prevent it. He wordlessly pulls you into a secure hug, worried that if he does anything else, you might start crying even more. You hug him back and just sob in his arms, thankful for his warm embrace. "It will all be okay, child of man. I'm here, after all." And somehow, you can't help but trust those words with every fiber of your being. After the incident, Malleus ends up confessing what happened to Lilia and Lilia goes into one of those "Oh, how my baby has grown..." rants. But he also does say that Malleus should start inviting you to new places to keep your mind off things and help you let loose. So he does just that, with an added sprinkle of gargoyle-hunting and gargoyle facts. You're now very well educated about gargoyles lol.

Team 7 gets zapped into the warring states era but it's like, team 7 either mid or directly after wave-arc.

They're babies!! They're untrained little babies!!! None of them have gotten that good good character development yet!! Kakashi is still actively desperately wanting to not teach them!! (tho he may have just gotten his "ahh fuck. I actually have to teach them, huh." Moment)

Sasuke looks like a carbon copy of a younger Izuna and it's going to cause problems

Naruto thankfully doesn't look much like an Uzumaki, but his tendency to very loudly introduce himself is going to get him into trouble

Going w my usual flavor of "the Hatake are a very small but very famous clan known for being fucking insane", people are seeing Kakashi and going "oh god oh fuck what are one of THOSE guys doing here oh sage preserve us please don't eat me" as Kakashi just kinda stands there like 🧍‍♂️

Sakura is the only one safe from not being fucked up and over her clan, good for her!

The kids still know virtually nothing about their sensei so they're learning all this stuff about his clan and believing every word of it, from the believable rumors to the insane.

Sakura, in a hushed, worried voice: "Sensei,, is it true ur clan eats people??"

Kakashi, who's father died before he could tell him almost anything about their clan and genuinely doesn't know but at this point is starting to get a little worried about it:

Kakashi, who also never passes up the opportunity to fuck with someone: "only stupid little students who ask stupid little questions <3"

For convoluted reasons they run into the Hatake of the era and after introductions they look at the kids and are like,

One big difference between this and the team ro time travel one is how much less trustworthy Kakashi comes off to literally everyone who looks at him.

He's a trained adult shinobi, probable bloodline thief (with no way to prove his innocence), and he has 3 children from 3 different clans (2 of which are indirectly enemies bc the Uzumaki is a Senju ally) (1 of which might have a direct relation to the Uchiha main house) and comes from an infamously volatile "wild clan" from another country entirely (Iron country)

He is NOT getting out of this with talk no jutsu bullshit. He has a target on his back from day 1 and it will take a minor miracle to get even a single person hear him out

Saying Tajima and Butsuma are still alive but due to die in some months (till team 7 accidentally interfere and somehow accidentally save Tajima, maybe also Butsuma but I'm more biased towards Tajima so I'm thinking just him actually)

Kakashi sees baby Kagami and feels like he's been hit by a truck bc he looks just like a miniature Shisui and he has hang-ups about his "suicide"

Half-Hatake Tobirama is catching HEAT from Kakashi's antics. Why does one of ur cousins have a sharingan. Where did he get those children. Do you know anything about this. Is it your duty to help hunt him down bc hes your blood. If not yours then it's definatley the Hatake's, call them immediately and tell them to clean up their mess.

Bloodline theft is like THE ultimate no-no for all shinobi, especially in this era. To the point that even ancient enemies will sometimes temporarily set aside grudges to kill bloodline theives. Kakashi is so fucked, someone get him out of there

- as he relaxes into his sleep though, he does loosen his grip and you're finally able to escape and lay next to him

- cuddling into his side is the best, you just feel so safe and protected, like he's your personal bodyguard

- when you first got together, the snoring took a LONGGGG time to get used to, but now it's kinda like white noise and you can't sleep in silence anymore

- very still when he sleeps, just like shifts his legs or moves his arm, he'll never be a bother in that sense

- however, you always manage to wake up with his hand on your ass...

- he wants you to hold him close to your chest and just tell him sweet things while he curls your hair around his finger

- big fan of spooning, and oddly loves being the little spoon ?? idk he likes that you two just kinda fit together perfectly like a puzzle

- he also likes when you place your head in the crook of his neck, and you being the big spoon just makes that easier

- eventually you stop with the mindless sweet talk and close your eyes, just drifting

- he refused to fall asleep first, he wants to make sure that you're comfortable and content and don't need anything else

- you're his number one priority and he's not afraid to admit that

- eventually you start to shift, and that's when he'll grab the blanket and find a more comfortable position for himself to be in

- he usually lays in his back and holds you close to his side

- ... however this man is COLD

- you feel his icy fingers on your side and it's just like OH!

- but it's ok you get used to it after a couple minutes

- dude is like a corpse when he sleeps, no twitching or moving or anything.. but he does talk in his sleep and things can be a liiiittle weird

- this little freak is ALWAYS dreaming of you, and sometimes the dreams are ,..,.,, not dry

- and he makes that PERFECTLY clear when he sleep talks like how did he manage to share a room with like four or five people in the crew while he's literally moaning in his sleep

- because he fell asleep with no control over himself, you can manually close his mouth and move his head around like he's a doll

- usually when he has one of spells, he's asleep for like 5-10 minutes maximum, so you try your best to stay up until he falls asleep on his own terms

- when he wakes up, he always gives you a smile and gets you two into a spooning position, him being the big spoon

- the heat from his body feels SO nice when you press against him

- he's so cute he'll always ask a million questions before you close your eyes

- "you comfy?" "you need a blanket?" "do you want me to get you some water?" "am i crushing you?"

- he also always asks if he was snoring again, and the answer is always yes, and the response is always that he'll try to catch himself and not disturb you

Hmm, barbarian bakugo has a mini zoo that travels everywhere his tribe goes, because as much as he doesnt want to- he has a habit of unintentionally pissing u off, so its always good to have some animals to gift you as pets and try to cool your anger? I mean, imagine Barbarian Bakugo just climbing up your window with a baby sheep strapped to his back, using it as a shield when you yell at him for pushing your knight Izuku down the stairs (because katsuki said "back off from the princess. I can protect her")

Barbarian Bakugo loves to feed you with his own hands, especially when he's hunted the meat/cooked it on the camp fire. Like I can just see him pulling reader into his lap and giving you the first big bite with his hands, and then he eats whatever is left of the morsel himself before giving you the next bite. You dont understand his affection at first, chalking it upto his barbarian traditions youre unaware of. Your teeth sometimes graze his fingers when he feeds you, and Katsuki makes sure to lick that area particularly when he feeds himself the morsel. Oh also, youre not leaving until he thinks youre full. You could be feeling nauseous, ready to just about burst, but Katsuki thinks you can eat a little more. Besides, in his head, hes just training you to consume an average healthy barbarian diet.

Child bakugo and child reader were absolutely adorable- i mean, the number of times the servants have walked in on the two playing "wedding" where bakugo keeps on proposing to you with different exotic animals but you keep saying no because Emperor Kai has already gifted you all those exotic pets, and Katsuki is just on this mission to find you the most unique creature because then you'll just have to say yes to him. So... he steals a dragon egg.

Also- Bakugo and Empress Momo have been at each other's throats since they were kids- always fighting for your attention at royal playdates. Meanwhile, youre trapped under your lazy fat tiger- Rice Puff, who refuses to let you venture out of the castle to "invite a bear for tea party".

Knowing how much you despise concubine Keigo, Katsuki does take any oppurtunity he can to subtly disrespect him/frame him/get him in trouble in front of King Dabi (a difficult feat) and Prince Shotou (a much easier feat since SHotou already hates Keigo).

Bakugo- even tho hes a barbarian, has learned the waltz and other fancy shit royal families do, just for you. He wants you to be proud of him (not that he realised that you already had 2 left feet, but he doesnt mind u stepping on his feet), and knowing how protective Dabi is of you, he doesnt want any short comings from his part.
