GILLIAN ANDERSON as MEREDITH PLAYING BY HEART (1998) dir. Willard Carroll
#playing by heart#gillian anderson#gandersonedit#filmgifs#moviegifs#userfilm#filmedit#filmandtv#motionpicturesource#filmtvtoday#tvfilmspot#ladiesofcinema#mine#she is so babygirl in this movie i couldn't resist giffing her#even though i'm sure no one has seen this lol#and yes her onscreen counterpart is jon stewart and yes it's weird and no they don't have any chemistry#still it was very cute and i recommend watching at least for gillian#she's a theater director who accidentally married a gay man and now she doesn't trust men#though this movie would've been 5 million times better if they just made her a lesbian

“People are exaggerating Bruce’s adoption craze” ok but not with Jason tho. He straight up picked him up off the street like a stray puppy because he had empty nest syndrome. Jason didn’t need to be Robin he just needed a safe place to stay but Bruce missed having a little buddy with him 🙈
#And the fact that Jason is the one who dies first and has the most impactful death. It is somewhat fitting. He should’ve never been there#Jason didn’t trust social services but he could’ve offered to foster him until other arrangements could be made but he didn’t#Or he could’ve just adopted him without making him Robin#Jason Todd#dc#‘Jason needed an outlet’ should’ve put him in wrestling. Theater. Karate even

I've been watching Hazbin Hotel in prime. Just watched episode 5 and I gotta ask
Why, oh, WHY DON'T I SEE MORE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT "MORE THAN ANYTHING" WHEN TALKING ABOUT THE HAZBIN HOTEL MUSIC???
Like I get it, the song before it "Hell's Greatest Dad" Is a bop reminiscent of other music from the era its parodying. I loved it.
BUT why are you only putting clips of that song when this MASTERPIECE comes a few minutes after
I honestly don't even know where to begin with this song. The visuals are beautiful, especially when we get moments like this where you can just see the absolute LOVE this man has for her daughter is so sweet and Heartwarming I just-
The voices are fenomenal but what else can you expect from the broadway talents of Erika Henningsen and Jeremy Jordan.
There is also the whole Symbolism with passing the baton to the next generation and stuff. I- I can't even get into the specifics right now Im too emotional.
But above all else THE LYRICS
ESPECIALLY THAT LAST ONE
"I'M GRATEFUL YOU ARE MY DAUGHTER/FATHER MORE THAN ANYTHING"
DO YOU WANT ME TO CRY?? CAUSE I AM. I AM BAWLING MY EYES OUT RIGHT NOW.
It's just so fucking beautiful man. Probably the best song I will hear all year. Obviously my favorite from Hazbin.
#Call me Sir Pentious cause Im crying like a baby over here.#WHY HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING THIS GEM FROM ME. THIS ABSOLUTE DIAMOND#I didnt even mention lyrics like “I've been dying to find out who you are. looks like the apple doesnt fall far.”#“You are a part of who I am” “you are the only thing worth fighting for” that just BREAK ME#but oh well#BTW of course I was gonna watch and become obsessed with Hazbin Hotel. I am a theater kid that loves animation. It was like meant for me#could do with a little less obsenities but thats alright its a staple of the show#On another note I almost went insane when I found out lucifer was Jeremy Jordan.#Like its insane how that man always ends up in my obsessions. Newsies. Tangled the series. The Death Note Musical#(Im team L btw in death note but GOD Jeremy's singing made me reconsider for a milisecond in Where's the justice he is just THAT GOOD)#Erika I knew from the mean girls musical which I also deeply enjoy#its Insane the Talent this show brought in. my theater kid heart is ELATED#Last thing is I gotta say I LOVED Lucifer#Like I thought I was gonna hate him because everyone was talking about charlie's daddy issues#I thought he was gonna be neglectful and manipulative#BUT NO. He is a silly (little) father who just loves his daughter but doesnt know how to show it#And had DREAMS and AMBITION and fate in humanity. And he is just such a fun character to follow I had such a riot with this episode#Hazbin Hotel#charlie morningstar#lucifer morningstar#charlotte morningstar

I think the fact that Kyoshi canonically knows how to dance and sing is severaly overlooked in this fandon
Its such a cool thing to put in her character, especially in how it complements her design
Its also so weirdly funny
#Put this in her character was such a smart move#Because at the same time it add some artistic sense in her design#Which its so cool#Was also made in a way that its so interesting#Its not cliche#When you look at her you dont see it fitting her character#But when you read her history makes sense#I love art#So this was a detail i liked a lot#Even if it wasn't so explored#“The avatar must learn the indispensible skills of theater”#Wong's training (cannon)#(literally)#avatar kyoshi#rise of kyoshi#kyoshi#kyoshi novels#flying opera company#Wong avatar#avatar novels

So I went to an early screening for the first two episodes of the Percy Jackson show yesterday (Saturday), and let me just say, it is 100% the adaptation we deserve. It was amazing. Once it ended, I wanted more.
The characterizations were amazing, any changes there were made sense and made the situation more realistic and added tension, the story was straight from the book, it was just amazing.
I went with my mom and she, who doesn't know the books, really enjoyed it. I asked her how she liked it (literary just the first two episodes) compared to Harry Potter (which i had her watch a few years back), and she said there was no contest. She likes the pjo show much more. She said it was engaging and even had her wanting the next episode once it was done.
Everyone needs to watch this show. It was amazing. It lives up to the hype. We need to make sure it gets greenlit for season 2.
#oc it's not perfect#there is one (1) critique i have but tbh it's not a super big deal and could very well be rectified in future episodes#but other than that it was absolutely amazing#the whole theater was clapping at iconic moments and it was a great experience too#once we got home i made my mom rewatch the lightning theif movie with the new context so that she could see what weve had to live with#she hated it lol and she doesnt even know the amount of inaccuracies bc she hasnt read the book#she said it's just a bad movie in general and she's right lol#anyway the show was AMAZING everyone make sure to watch it as it comes out so that they greenlight S2#riordanverse#rick riordan#percy jackson show#percy jackson tv series#percy jackon and the olympians#percy jackson#annabeth chase#grover underwood#pjo series#pjo show#percy jackson disney+#pjo disney+#pjo#no pjo spoilers

[ Open House Chicago 2024 — All Saints' Episcopal Church, Dank Haus German Cultural Center, St. Mary of the Lake, Riviera Theater, Wilson Avenue Theater]
#I think the people who rehab or maintain historic locations are doing holy work.#I was privileged to catch one of the riviera owners talking about what it looked like back in the day vs. what it is now#the photographs they've put up and what (they can only guess) was there back in the day#I found where the guys rehabbing the wilson avenue theater cut through to the back offices - it was a bank before it was a theater#and there's a whole warren of vaults and breakrooms behind the front-facing bits#and even the curators at all saints' were talking about how the striking dark arts and crafts-style woodwork was brand new#a decision made in the 70s; before that it was just a worn-down church#(even dank haus - it looks like every 90s public school I ever attended and they're in the middle of a refurbishing right now.)#I kept thinking about how thankless a lot of this work is if you don't know how much time and money and attention goes into it.#all you know is that things look different; there's an elevator where there wasn't before and things are neater and cleaner.#except that takes so so many hands and a lot of money and time and someone somewhere caring intensely.#even just this weekend! someone has to arrange for t-shirts sign up volunteers; to train them and give them site-specific instructions.#somebody has to stand around and encourage you to sign up for the email list. and give some tours.#answer questions. talk about the architect and the refurbishment work. tell people where the bathrooms are.#anyway. it's a triumph. it is.#city of the big shoulders#wherever there is light

in the vein of those "try jokingly hyping yourself up instead of being self-deprecating" posts, my number one Feeling Good Life Hack is to get free compliments by complimenting yourself
example: I made my friend a bunch of pairs of earrings for her birthday once. Sometimes when I see her wearing them, I'll say "whoa, I love your earrings, someone really cool must have made those!" She'll usually grin and agree that someone really cool did make them, or that she likes them too.
this is of course best deployed with people who know it was you who actually made/did the thing you're complimenting, so they're in on the "joke" part. and if they're your friend they'll pretty much always jump on board and take the chance to compliment That Mysterious Cool Person who made/did whatever you're pointing out. so you get to compliment yourself, get compliments from other people, and make people laugh all in one.
also, if you do this enough to make this an inside joke between you, then they'll sometimes just start offering you free compliments without you even having to do the Bit. sometimes i'll just be like "oh! your earrings!" when i notice my friend wearing a pair that i made, and she'll go "yeah, someone very cool made them for me :)"
#stars has thoughts#i designed the t shirt for a theater production in high school#and i would tell everyone i saw wearing it 'i like your shirt' because it was funny (they all knew it was my design)#and there were several people who not even in a playing-along-with-the-bit way would tell me that they genuinely really liked the design#it was so sweet! and i wouldn't have heard them say that if i hadn't brought it up#anyway hype yourself up comedically like you're an unknown third party and people with think you're funny And give you compliments#i mostly do this with artwork i made (often as gifts to others)#but i think you could pull it off with pretty much anything you did that you can take credit for and know they will appreciate#my parents will occasionally do a 'someone who loves you very much loaded the dishwasher so you didn't have to' variation

i've been rotating the "this doesn't make any sense!" response to boy and the heron in my head and i wonder how much of it comes down to like...the kind of audience that engages with ghibli movies vs the kind of audience that mostly only engages with weird art movies vs the kind of audience that only really engages with blockbusters and marvel movies, and the overlap of those groups in the theater.
because, like, the boy and the heron is far and away more straightforward, from a plot perspective, than a lot of other Weird Extremely Personal Art Movies i've seen and love, but it IS a Weird Extremely Personal Art Movie even so. usually the only people seeing Weird Extremely Personal Art Movies, especially in theaters, are people who like that and expect that and have seen those types of films before and are therefore capable of engaging with them even when things aren't as clear as they'd be in an average blockbuster flick. like, nobody who only cares about Cinema to the extent of marvel movies and MAYBE john wick is going to see beau is afraid, and if they did they wouldn't have the tools to engage with such a dream-logicy movie. it would just be a weird thing that doesnt make sense to them, at least until they worked their media engagement muscles with other weird films. there's a lot of self-selection to the kind of person who usually sees these kind of movies.
while boy and the heron is weirder and more complex than a lot of other ghibli movies, as far as weird art films go it is incredibly, INCREDIBLY straightfoward. every weird plot point is explained very clearly to the audience, very little is up for interpretation from a strictly "what was the plot" point of view. boy loses mother. father remarries and moves the family. boy struggles to contend with grief. boy is pulled into a magical world by an old man who wants to use him. time is weird and fucked up in the magical world, but the movie is going to go out of it's way to highlight who's who and make it clear how the time travel works and the characters' relations to one another. the boy refuses to take over the magical world because he wants to live in the real world with the real people he loves. boy leaves the magical world having learned an important lesson about moving on. but the boy and the heron trusts its audience, doesn't handhold, and expects the audience to engage seriously and with focus to its plot and characters and stories.
a lot of people never watch movies like that! a lot of people are used to uncomplicated superhero movies and romcoms and that's it. the difference is that those people were never going to see beau is afraid, so the discussion about that movie instead comes from people who have the tools to engage with it. but because of the aesthetic-ification of ghibli, a lot of people who don't Do art films but are really into the aesthetics of cute little guys and girls in pretty dresses went to this art film and were confused that it was weird and dream-like and dark and strange and requires more of its audience than just passively watching.
anyway there's nothing wrong with not having the muscles to engage with weird art films, though i do think everyone should challenge themselves with the kind of stuff they watch. there's nothing wrong with preferring simple straightforward uncomplicated plotlines. but it is really interesting seeing people talk about the movie like it's insanely weird and doesnt make any sense meanwhile me and the friends i've chatted with about who DO have experience with this kind of film all feel insane because the movie is SO clear and SO straightforward by the standards we're used to. its just a neat crossover re: the kinds of movie fans that exist
#rain speaking!#does this make sense#its like if this was a live action more or even an animated movie from another studio half this audience would never engage with it because#it is on its face a weird strange art movie about the director working thru smth#but ghibli is as much an Aesthetic (a highly simplified 'cozy' and uncomplicated aesthetic that has very little to do#with the kinds of films ghibli actually makes) as it is a studio so a lot of ppl whod otherwise never touch this type of work#are going to be in theaters for it#WHICH IS GOOD!! i hope watching it inspires those folks to engage w more weird shit#sorry for the beau is afraid comparison they rly have very little in common it was just the first thing that came to me#when i was thinking abt other weird highly personal art films made by directors who are clearly#expecting the audience to have a really solid base under them re: their ability to engage with complicated films#boy and the heron spoilers /

Sometimes you get put down for being autistic and weird...
And sometimes your neighbours ask you questions about Japan because they're going there on vacation, and you write them a 14 pages long list of things to visit and cultural tips and vocabulary and a pronunciation guide (while knowing full well this is not a normal thing to do); and they read the entire thing and invite you to their place for dinner to ask you follow up questions, let you infodump about kabuki history and Shinto culture and sound genuinely interested in it, and they learn the Japanese phrases you gave them and ask you to correct their pronunciation.
Sometimes you find people who are genuinely interested in you and happy for you to share your knowledge. Sometimes being neurodivergent is a fucking gift.
#in any circumstances i wouldn't change it for the world#i LOVE being on the spectrum#but i'm lucky to have relatively minimal autiss-related problems#in any case those neighbours are awesome and i had the best fucking evening#THEY READ THE WHOLE DOCUMENT AND CAME UP WITH QUESTIONS#THEY ASKED ME FOR ADVICE#THEY MADE ME A WATERMELON COCKTAIL#AND INVITED ME TO A THEATER PLAY#these folks saw me tipsy and infodumping and stimming and they invited me to go out with them next week. WHAT#anyway. just wanted to share bc it made me so happy

that post abt going to see movies in movie theaters is very correct but like. you people arent putting your phone down and paying attention when you watch a movie at home?? its not an experience for you to watch a movie at home???
#im sorry im movies georg adn an outlier and should not be counted. ive been watching a movie almost every single day for most of my life#how has this made me turn out? well-#but the point even watching movies as regularly as i do i dont understand putting on a movie to not be Involved in the experience#like why are you watching it then!!! thats not watching it!!#you dont get excited abt watching movies at home???#anyway.#adding onto my tags to say yes i get one of the important parts of seeing a movie in a theater is also being with a group of people#but the paying attention and getting immersed in a movie part like you people don't do that at home????
