((okay I guess I'm in a rambling mood today but also like

Nemesis was supporting Venat technically but like. not because she even thought it was the best thing to do

it was mainly just the only option anyone fucking had, given that Azem ran off and everyone else was gung-ho about the whole "human sacrifice loop" thing

and also, after Hyth/Apollo went and sacrificed himself she uh

went a bit around the twist out of sheer grief and rage about it because yeah they didn't like one another but that was still her little brother and their adoptive dad had already sent himself to his doom there too

like the only reason the Final Days didn't eat her alive like it did everyone else who felt strong emotions was because she had her blood magic and could just force her body to stay in-line instead of warping into a hellcritter

so anyone coming up to her with a plan about how to so thoroughly stick one in the Convocation's collective eye was gonna get her support no matter how good or how horrible it was

(coincidentally Dae herself falls somewhere in the middle, opinion-wise, on the morality of the whole thing with what Venat did turning herself into Hydaelyn: yes it actually pretty sucks because it caused a huge amount of suffering and a fair bit of the time, suffering doesn't make anyone stronger, it just hurts and that's it, but also like what the fuck ELSE was anyone supposed to do in that situation, the other option was so much goddamn worse and no one had any time to come up with a better third option! there were no winning moves there and you couldn't just not play either!)

and there's also the rather thorny matter of Lahabrea probably being one of the main architects of that whole thing and she genuinely thought he was a better man than that and that did not help that ragey bastard-ness of hers in the slightest

in fact I currently HC that he wasn't even one of the handful of Convocation members that wanted to off her! he wanted to actually go fucking talk to her and try to bring her around to it because he still thought she could be convinced, and he was rather pissed to learn that they had just gone behind everyone's backs and threw a bunch of magic rock-critters at Nemesis until she went and ripped open a hole to the Abyss right under her house after brawling with them for a while

but really her mind was already made up and even if he had tried to talk to her he'd have gotten literally nowhere

she was just gone at that point and there's a reason that the Abyss

y'know an interdimensional critter that loooooves feeding on emotion

was so enamored with her that it actually went and got her reincarnated

and it wasn't just because it wanted a window into the physical world to go sightseeing))

smth abt the way vi is so firmly stuck in the past is driving me absolutely nuts. she can't get past jinx growing up and changing, she repeats the self-destructive patterns she was following in prison the moment she's left alone, she is literally fighting the exact same people over and over (sevika + big guy whose jaw she broke) just to hurt herself. she cannot let herself move on bc that would mean admitting that things changed

like we were so fucking robbed of seeing perez in the wake of saw vs events I want to see her getting out of the hospital and flipping tables and pointing a gun in ericksons face after being told that strahm is the lead suspect. I want to see her having a breakdown after strahms fingerprints come back dead. I want to see her hand twitching over her gun everytime she sees hoffman. I want to see her fucking losing it and desperate to avenge her friend and partner and to clear his name. I want to see the thought process that lead to her inviting known serial killer mark hoffman to the basement lab just so she could torture him psychologically before she had a legitimate excuse to shoot him. I want to see more of her and I want to see how strahms death impacted her the way the reverse impacted him.

honestly i could write essay after essay about everything that made that finale bad. and i will. however comma i genuinely do not care about any of these characters enough to want to do that. i don't want to spend my time critiquing and analysing a show where all the characters are boring and the plot is all deus ex machina.

LIKE. WHO IS RUBY. WHO IS SHE. WHO FUCKING IS SHE.

she's done with the whole SEASON. she was in EVERY episode. and we literally don't know anything about her apart from the whole mom mystery thing which is all for the big reveal at the end anyway?

and i can talk about the ways in which that was unsatisfying and so on. but like what does that tell us about RUBY? what do we know about HER

and the answer is honestly very little. ruby is such a stock doctor who companion that it's just kind of boring. she gets a big mystery, because of fucking course she does, and who is she outside of that? nice?? sweet?? does as she's told?? (this one is fucking boring btw) kind of like the chibnall companions, she's whoever she needs to be for the situation at hand. the writers say ruby needs to be shocked by landing on a planet after 6 months of travelling with the doctor, so she is. she isn't a person. she has one desire, which is to find her mother, and the only reason she gets to have that is that rtd needs to set up whatever the fuck was going on with her mom for the finale. that's it.

and the doctor. like why should we care about this doctor specifically, outside of the fact that this is the character we have been following for the whole show? who is he??? like seriously who is he? he doesn't get any character development? what makes him different from other doctors? who the fuck is this guy????

i said earlier that ncuti's doctor is what you get when you throw all the doctors in a blender and i stand by that. he's definitely the doctor, but he's like an average of all the other doctors with nothing particularly unique or special about him. ruby is what you get when you throw all the companions in a blender. definitely a companion, with nothing unique or special about her either. much like chibnall's companions, all she gets to do is stand around and watch.

and the crucial missing factor is we don't get to see what they see in each other. which from the companion's perspective is still excusable because here's a dude with a spaceship time machine and that sounds kind of sick so lets go and travel with him is an understandable motivation. but what does he see in her? because there's always a moment where you can see the doctor sort of think, oh yeah, i should travel with this person.

but there isn't really this moment with ruby. it's kind of like with how thirteen meets her companions. she just sort of runs into them, and now they're stuck together. and ncuti does get to emote more than jodie, so at least you can see that ruby and the doctor do like each other, but their relationship isn't really fleshed out ever. and like i can buy ruby risking her life for him, because that is just sort of what happens on doctor who, but it's not based on anything. we don't see them develop this trust of each other. their relationship doesn't get developed. it just appears fully formed.

do you guys ever think about how babs hated ianthe (or at least had a strained sort of friendship with her) but was the perfect archetype of a cavalier, while gideon l*ved harrow but was a terrible archetype of a cavalier, and those are the only two pairs at canaan house who became lyctors.

& while we're at it, do you ever think about how, despite babs being literally born and raised for the role, it was gideon who actually served as the 'better cavalier' in the end

If Kipperlilly DOES end up betraying Porter/Jace as part of a secret other scheme she has (whether good or evil) and it has to do with saving Lucy, I just know she’s going to be a bitch about it and pull a ‘sorry, I only save High Five Heroes’ before leaving her other friends to die or some shit. And then she will take her final form: Magic Betty from Adventure Time, betraying her allies and saving her frost gf at the expense of the world. It would also parallel what Ankarna is going through (‘your girlfriend’s out of town, it sucks’, becoming a little imperialist rage machine under the influence of Porter/Sunstone but not being able to fully turn on Lucy despite going against her values and turning into a violent weirdo). Thinking about how likely it is that BTAS Ivy grew old n spent all of that time fully believing that Harley died. That despite all her efforts and desperation to save her and get her away from Joker she didn't, she couldn't, and she lost her. That Harley died the same day that wretched man did and it became just yet another thing linking her to him for eternity.

thinking about how BTAS Ivy loved her So much and never got the chance to grow old with her, to see her heal and recover, to heal and recover with her

thinking about how much they deserved their happy ending but never got one. how we're seeing & getting their Less Platonic moments in the newer BTAS comics with the impending knowledge that the narrative has already decided it's a fate they'll never truly get to indulge in and savor, that it will always be destined to end in tragedy.

how for some universes a happy ending is given, growing old together is just the future we know is already there awaiting them... but not for them, not for btas harlivy... not the originals, for their story will always be a tragedy.
