Another perfect evening over wine, cheese, charcuterie and all the trimmings: olives, seasoned nuts, fruit, crostini, honeycomb…at Newhall Press Room. In the “build your own” plate we selected Spanish chorizo, Calabrese salami, Saucisson salami, aged Gouda, Brie and Red Dragon Cheddar - a cheese from Wales with whole-grain mustard seeds! Any Italian food lovers here? Oops we did it again: back at D’Agostinos Trattoria in Las Vegas to try some of their other dishes including: Fresh Baked Garlic Cheesy Bread with Spicy Marinara - the bread was super flavorful and was only improved by loads of garlic and cheese! We finished it all! Then came “D’s” House Antipasto Salad: Crisp Romaine/Spring Greens/Grape Tomatoes/Roasted Red Peppers/Fresh Mozzarella/Soppressata/Kalamata Olives/Pepperoncini/Crispy Prosciutto/House Pickled Red Onions/House Vinaigrette - that crispy Prosciutto was a game changer! Next up was the Chicken Marsala described as: Lightly Floured Chicken Scallopini/Mushrooms/Lombardo Sweet Marsala Wine Sauce - the sauce was one of the best veal reduction sauces I’ve had, and the quality Marsala wine veteran Chef/Owner Dan Thompson used made it even more perfect. We also enjoyed some great wine, this time a Cabernet Franc from Provence recommended by their Court of Master Sommelier Kelly Booth. Lastly, don’t want to fail to mention that we were welcomed by name - and it was only our second visit - by Dan’s wife and co-owner Brandi Thompson. Which would you go for? During a recent trip to Las Vegas and we hit up 3 really yummy places off the strip! A lot less money, and really good. The video is at The Magic Noodle where they, clearly, make their own noodles. We had a Chinese Burrito with the yummiest sauce and the House Special with everything. Next we tried Brooklyn’s Best Pizza and since my Italian Mama is from Brooklyn, and we often went when we were kids to visit, I can tell you this was the real deal. Enjoyed Pepperoni, Meat Lovers and Grandma's Pie with cheese, tomato sauce, traditional pepperoni on top and spices. Yesterday I teased you with our dinners from Olive Terrace Bar and Grill in Valencia…today I give you the killer desserts we had afterwards! Four of us split three incredibly unique dishes, as well as a nice split of chilled Passito di Pantelleria (Italian Moscato wine from dried grapes) from their menu. Here are the details: DON’T MISS THE HOMEMADE PERSIAN ICE CREAM made with saffron, rose water, pistachio and mascarpone cream. It’s a game changer! But that didn’t slow us down from also inhaling the Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding made with crème anglaise and whiskey sauce; and finally the very-yummy Gluten Free Saffron Rice Pudding that is described on the menu as: Crème Anglaise | spices | rose water | raisins I apricot | pistachio | almond. The wine was the perfect pairing for all three creamy dishes. From their multi-page wine and cocktail menu, "DONNA FUGATA | PASSITO DI PANTELLERIA | BEN RYE 2014 | SICILY | ITALY. OMG Olive Terrace Bar and Grill really has it all! Last week we tried four entrées we hadn’t had before! They all sounded and looked so amazing, we all had to try each other’s dish! I have to say my “fish stew” stole the show with fresh Mahi Mahi in a wonderful stew of Persian spices - not spicy - delivering the most amazing flavors. This is how it is described on the menu: ABADANI FISH TAGINE “GHALYEH MAHI” Mahi mahi filet | garlic ǀ onion ǀ tamarind | turmeric | saffron I cilantro | fenugreek | virgin olive oil | saffron basmati rice. Eddie got their Beef Stroganoff and loved it, brought half home. Our friends got the Grilled Chicken Piccata - really liked that it wasn’t breaded - and the Herb Crusted Sea Bass that was so much better than all the nut-crusted fish dishes we see! Have you been to the patios at Salt Creek Grille lately? They’ve expanded their space again, and there’s plenty of social distancing. This time we had our usual Martinis, all that yummy warm bread and butter, I ordered the “Herb Crusted Lamb Chops” that friends have been raving about but was only able to finish half of the plate as it also included Au Gratin Potatoes and Bacon and Onion Brussels Sprouts. Ed, of course, got his Filet Mignon with Béarnaise Sauce and added asparagus! (Not shown: we split the “Caesar Over Mesquite” with shaved Parmesan. "What you don't expect at Slater's 50/50 and what you do" This time, in an attempt to eat healthy I ordered something new: the "Power Bowl" which was a quinoa veggie patty over mixed greens with edamame, blueberries, carrots, pumpkin seeds, tomatoes, quinoa, avocado and wildflower-honey vinaigrette. Very refreshing with a nice cold berry and pear hard cider. Ate and drank it all. Eddie had something new for him too: the Grilled Chicken Ranch Sandwich. Buttermilk grilled chicken, melted swiss cheese, tomato, iceberg lettuce, red onion and ranch on a honey wheat bun...with chili cheese fries. Got into Egg Plantation, wide open before 8am on a Sunday morning, and had a wonderful breakfast. It was a mere 60 degrees and they had flipped on the heaters so your eggs, and you, can stay nice and warm. Had the "Light and Healthy Crepes" for the first time, "Gruyere cheese, sauteed mushrooms, spinach, and garlic topped with avocado, tomato and balsamic glaze." It's been two hours since breakfast and I'm still full! Eddie had his usual ham and cheese omelet, ordered the "petite" size with three instead of four eggs, with his hash browns extra crispy! Coffee was spot on, nothing fancy because we don't need fancy - but they do have a coffee menu for those that do! 👏👏☕️☕️🍳🍳🥚🥚🍞🍞🧀🧀 . . . And had never noticed this on the menu before, though we knew about it already, "Our family owned business is committed to supporting our community. Just when I felt I would die of boredom at home we had this treat! Dinner made for us by good friends included quality filet mignon, asparagus, cheesy baked potatoes and mushrooms grilled in white wine, garlic and butter… Then after dinner this happened: they opened a rare vintage 1987 PX (Pedro Ximenez) Grand Reserva Bodegas To Albala, a sherry dessert wine from Spain with a whopping 17% alcohol, which was incredibly awesome with warm Peach Cobbler topped with vanilla bean ice cream. And today is Peach Pie Day! Too hot to go out to dinner? Then it’s the perfect time to go out to breakfast instead! Especially if you don’t want to stay indoors all day and all night! This time we went to Nealie’s Skillet where we had several yummy dishes! Eddie had the amazing "Chorizo Con Papas” dish that included Chorizo, home fries, green peppers, onions, pico de gallo, cotija cheese, crema, colby blend, cheese, tortilla strips, topped with two fried eggs! And yes, of course he had to take about half of it home, used it as a side that night with our steak dinner. The daughter ordered the "Traditional Eggs Benedict” though this version also has a bed of refreshing Arugula. My choice, the Avocado Benny, aka the special Shannon Mee told me about, used two halves of a small avocado to hold two poached eggs, bacon, Arugula, pico de gallo and jalapeño Hollandaise sauce. Lovely time on the lovely terrace at the one and only Olive Terrace Bar and Grill. The ambiance there is incredible, so much greenery! Then came the food! Enjoyed all the lovely tomatoes, cheese, peaches, pine nuts, balsamic reduction, arugula, basil and more in the “Grilled Stone Fruit and Burrata Salad” from the Summer Seasonal Menu. And then dived into the “Cheese, Olive, Fig, Walnut” pedestal dish "starter" with four kinds of cheese. I chose the Brie, Gorgonzola, Goat and White Cheddar! So good and plenty to take home too. Who has the best wine list, by the bottle and glass, in town? Has received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for the second year in a row? Which same restaurant is open mid-week - and you don’t need a reservation? You know my favorites by now so you may already know that I’m talking about Newhall Press Room, on Main Street in Newhall, where you can dine on the patio and the new extended patio! We snagged what may have been their last bottle of a 2016 Pride Mountain Chardonnay! This wine had spent some time in new French oak and was rated 93 points by Jeb Dunnuck, who called it “another terrific white from this estate.” We paired it with a “make your own” cheese and charcuterie board that always comes with seasoned nuts, olives, dried and fresh fruit and buttery crostini. What’s been on your plate and in your glass this past week? Finally got Eddie to drive over to Summerlin, Nevada, for dinner at the one and only Marche Bacchus. Though I didn’t get a full shot of the wine store (see shot behind our Chateauneuf du Pape) know that their bottle prices are incredible, just $10 over retail and no additional corkage fee! If that’s not enough their wines by the glass, spirits and cocktail list is a book about 1-inch thick! So excited to be at The Social and on their new deck patio! Lots of pals between their two patios enjoying the best Martinis in town and great food too. This time we started with Martinis - no surprise there - and then enjoyed Pepper Crusted Ahi Salad with baby spinach, egg, tomatoes and a killer garlic wasabi dressing, then it was the Jambalaya with blackened chicken, prawns, Andouille sausage in a Cajun remoulade sauce over linguini.
