thinking about how cecil has a Huge presence in night vale as the Voice of it all but to abby he is her gay little brother. cecil being perceived from many different viewpoints--from carlos' perspective to abby's to a third person pov in the books--is something i love so much. i love how his character has become so much more real over the years :(

Making Cecilos on picrew is soo fun. I specially adore chosing Cecil's clothes: he is such an icon!! And this picrew in particular is great for them. It even has a WTNV shirt!!

I feel as though all the recent arcs have involved something deeply personal and traumatic for Cecil, and the way there are still loose threads in each of them makes me wonder if this is all going to culminate into something bigger.

Janet Lubelle hurting Cecil’s friends, and exposing what his husband had been hiding from him. Kevin, promising to return, bringing with him more people and baggage. Cecil’s family, his issues with Abby, with his mother, with his father, with his memory. Owls.

Everything has to do with Cecil’s relationships with other people. And that can be the scariest mystery to face. The hardest antagonist.

Thing I’ve been working on for what… maybe 3 months? Is finally done! I did a little teaser… thing for the cecilos week event but just got around to finishing it up. It’s my first full length animatic, so like, not perfect but yeah. I had fun. All fluffy nonsense tho. Mayhaps watch it? Leave a comment? Whatever.

Sooooo that wasn’t the rock club.

Thank goodness!

No, it was actually my co-worker, Dave informing me that he had bought tickets for that concert. Which makes me even more excited for it! Not only am I going to a concert but it’s with my co-worker, Dave? Exciting! Though…it makes me question even more if I should ask Cecil to come.

I know he’s busy and all…what if he has other plans! And then they’re Esteban to take into— ok. Calm down, Carlos. This isn’t this big of a deal! It’s just one night.

One night.

Anyway! Science experiments have been going on as usual. Nothing interesting aside from that weird…glowly…rock out side….

AHEM! That’s probably nothing. Anyway, this has been entry 6 of the entry of Carlos [REDACTED]—

After this episode what I'm thinking about most is "It Sticks With You" where Cecil and Carlos took Esteban to the Redwood Remains state park and wandered through the giant trees. How Cecil described that day as being full of "memories to last a lifetime" and then forgot about it once he'd spoken it on the radio.

Watching Esteban and Carlos sitting on moss-covered rocks and pointing at fish and salamanders, I thought of what it must be like to have a dad, and how I was so glad that unlike me, Esteban has a loving father. In fact, he has two. That moment will stay with me forever.

And now Esteban has made a drawing that's similar to the one Cecil made as a child. He's probably heard this story even though Cecil can't remember it; he's turned a story about Cecil's father into a story about Esteban's grandfather. And unlike Cecil, Esteban gets to keep the memories of his fathers, he gets to have them both with him in the park, while Cecil's mother tried to lose him and Abby.

I also think it's really important that when Cecil saw a boy crawling into a tree in the drawing, his first thought was that the boy was Esteban and he had to shout "don't do it!" Especially going back to "It Sticks With You", where Cecil's dad encouraged him to crawl into the tree even though it wasn't safe. Cecil's doing everything he can to protect his son and keep him safe from things that he himself can't even remember.

I remember a man holding a boy’s hand and telling him about a tree. They look a lot alike, those two. “Go into the tree,” the man tells the boy, and the boy does not want to. “It’s warm and quiet in there,” the man says to the boy. But the boy cannot hear him over the sound of the owls. I can’t shake these memories. But I can’t express them either.

There's always a man and a boy and a tree, and what is a son other than a container for the father's memories?

it seems like the consensus is that Esteban calls his parents dad/daddy and papa but I've seen varying opinions on which is which, so until the writers remember that Esteban exists and bring him up substantially, we must settle it for ourselves.

Some more stuff about Esteban based on what we've heard in the show.

The most substantial episode we've ever had about him was "The Sitter Cancelled" where he was five. I'm not sure why Cecil and Carlos needed a sitter for him when he should be in either preschool or kindergarten? Unless you subscribe to the theory that Cecil's radio station isn't broadcast live, which would mean the show could have been on a Saturday. Or Finknor just genuinely forgot that Esteban is school age now. Or Cecil and Carlos are homeschooling him. (As a former homeschooled kid, I can say with confidence that they are NOT qualified for that.) Or school just works differently for Night Vale.

A few people have said that Esteban was acting like a toddler in "The Sitter Cancelled", but I thought about it and I think him being five makes sense. He was able to go play on his own in the booth and then just come find his dad when he needed something, which makes sense to me, and he went down for a late afternoon nap which little kids often do when they come back from school for the day. And while the books that Cecil reads to him are Night Vale versions of board books for toddlers, some little kids get really attached to that kind of book and want to keep hearing it even as they get older. My little brother is thirteen and he still wants to be read to, though he tends to do chapter books now.

Esteban is adopted, but in Ten Years Later, Carlos says that he was born in Night Vale. It's not clear how Cecil and Carlos were connected with him, but most likely his birth giver turned him over to an adoption agency who then paired him with a family. Because he was adopted as a baby they were probably paired with the birth giver before Esteban was born, so they may know his biological parent or parents, but Esteban probably doesn't.

According to "A Spy in the Desert," Cecil and Carlos adopted Esteban two years prior to the events of the show, meaning that they had been married for about a year and a half before he came home. Because "C****s" confirms that he was a baby at the time of his adoption, Esteban began talking in short sentences at only 18 months. This is rare as most children only have about a 70 word vocabulary at that age and can usually only form two-word sentences by the time they turn two.

Esteban is implied to have ADHD. Cecil mentions that Esteban is consistently restless in "The Sitter Cancelled" and that he throws frequent tantrums at ages four, five, and six. He also seems to have trouble listening to instructions.

Between giraffes, bunnies, toads, and birds, it's been mentioned multiple times that Esteban likes animals. In "It Sticks With You" Carlos talks to him about the scientific classifications of different animals and the circle of life.

It's possible (although this is REALLY speculative) that Esteban has a little sister, since in the children's fun fact science corner of "The Terminal" Cecil adopted the kind of baby-talk voice he usually uses when talking to Esteban, and mentioned that the child listening to the program would learn how to make "ooey gooey slime that you can squish between your fingers and pour on your little sister's head."
