Stories are hard to write.
They're even harder for women/queerfolk/POC/etc.
Where do you learn how to think about stories? Your first conscious approach to literary analysis was probably... well, in literature class. You learned about themes and motifs as you analyzed classic literature, learning about common narrative structures (eg hero's journey) and other concepts in storytelling.
So, who decides what a classic is? Whose voices get to be heard? When underserved voices are heard… what type of challenges to the social hierarchy are they allowed to make? More importantly, what type of challenges aren't they allowed to make?
The field of literature was not developed with your voice in mind. It's long been a field disproportionately controlled by straight white men - so anything that might've been a "classic" that speaks outside of those experiences would have been lost to time, or censored to contemporary sensibilities. There are movements to change that, but that takes time, and it's hard to override founder effect in long-standing paradigms.
Our stories are missing. And that's why fanfic - folklore, in a world with copyright - is critically important. It allows us to reinvent stories in our images and experiences and cultures, as humans have done throughout our existence, so that we can find our own voices.
We don't have the course plotted for us the way others do, but we instinctively realize that the stories need to be there.
And that makes them hard to write.

in university one of our media history project prompts was "animating ___" e.g. animating hair, where you examined how hair has been animated throughout animation history (you had to pick 5 or 6 examples) and analyzed any meaning or implications based on the technique, style, aesthetics, etc and what that might inform us about the era in which it was made. unfortunately i very much misinterpreted the assignment and did not do much actual analyzing and did a very basic technical rundown instead. i did get a normal grade on it but i've never been able to stop thinking about what if i actually did the analysis. there's actually so much i can say about hair in animation outside of how the animators achieved it. i would have chosen different examples. anyway if i ever feel like it i may try to redo this assignment on my own time and also perhaps pick a different subject and write an essay on that as well

Effective Study Techniques for High School and College Students
Studying effectively is crucial for high school and college students to excel academically. With the right techniques, students can maximize their learning potential, retain information longer, and perform better on exams. Here are some proven study strategies that can help students achieve academic success.
1. Active Learning
Active learning involves engaging with the material actively rather than passively reading or listening. This can include:
Summarizing: After reading a chapter, summarize the main points in your own words.
Questioning: Ask questions about the material and try to answer them without looking at your notes.
Teaching: Explain the concepts you’ve learned to someone else. Teaching is a powerful way to reinforce your understanding.
2. Pomodoro Technique
The Pomodoro Technique helps maintain focus and productivity by breaking study sessions into intervals, typically 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break. After four intervals, take a longer break of 15-30 minutes. This method helps reduce mental fatigue and keeps you motivated.
3. Mind Mapping
Mind maps are visual representations of information that help organize and connect ideas. They can be particularly useful for subjects that require understanding complex relationships and hierarchies. Start with a central concept and branch out into subtopics, using keywords and images to trigger memory.
4. Spaced Repetition
Spaced repetition involves reviewing material at increasing intervals over time. This technique leverages the psychological spacing effect, which helps improve long-term retention. Tools like Anki or Quizlet can help implement spaced repetition by scheduling review sessions based on your progress.
5. SQ3R Method
The SQ3R method (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) is a structured approach to studying:
Survey: Skim the material to get an overview.
Question: Formulate questions based on headings and subheadings.
Read: Read the material thoroughly to answer the questions.
Recite: Summarize the information aloud or in writing.
Review: Regularly review the material to reinforce learning.
6. Active Recall
Active recall is the practice of actively retrieving information from memory, rather than passively reviewing notes. This can be done through self-testing with flashcards, practice quizzes, or by writing down everything you remember about a topic and then checking for accuracy.
7. Mnemonics and Memory Aids
Mnemonics are techniques that help remember information through association. For example, using acronyms, visual images, rhymes, or chunking information into smaller parts can make it easier to recall facts and details.
8. Effective Note-Taking
Good note-taking can enhance comprehension and retention. Methods like the Cornell Note-Taking System help organize notes into key points, summaries, and cues. Digital tools like OneNote or Evernote can also be useful for organizing and accessing notes quickly.
9. Healthy Study Habits
Adopting healthy habits can significantly impact your study effectiveness:
Consistent Schedule: Establish a regular study routine and stick to it.
Healthy Lifestyle: Ensure adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, and regular physical activity.
Stress Management: Practice mindfulness, meditation, or yoga to reduce stress and improve focus.
10. Study Groups
Joining or forming a study group can provide multiple perspectives on the material, enhance understanding through discussion, and keep you accountable. Ensure the group stays focused on the topic and doesn't become a social gathering.
Conclusion
Effective study techniques are essential for high school and college students aiming for academic success. By incorporating methods like active learning, the Pomodoro Technique, mind mapping, spaced repetition, and active recall, students can enhance their understanding and retention of material. Additionally, adopting healthy study habits and utilizing resources like study groups can further improve academic performance. Experiment with these techniques to find what works best for you and watch your grades and confidence soar.

Time Management Tips for Students
Time management is super important during university. It’s tough for many students, but it's a skill you've gotta nail.
Between going to class, prepping for exams, keeping up with friends, and finding time to chill, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.
We've got a dissertation example that dives into how handling stress and managing time is key for master’s students.
Here are some basic tips for managing your time:
Tumblr media
PLAN YOUR TIME
Take some time to plan things out. Planning helps you avoid repeating stuff and wasting time. Making a list of what you need to find out before diving into research is smart. It helps keep you on track.
PRIORITIZE
Make a to-do list and put the most important stuff at the top. This way, you focus on what really matters. Tools like the Eisenhower Matrix can help you figure out what's urgent and what can wait.
SET REALISTIC GOALS
Sometimes things don’t go as planned, and that's okay. Be patient with yourself. When you make your to-do list, keep it real. Factor in extra time, especially if you're not sure how long things will take.
ALLOT TIME
Set aside specific times for studying or doing hobbies. Stick to your schedule even if you'd rather do something else. This helps you stay focused and get things done.
BREAK IT DOWN
Big tasks can feel overwhelming. Break them into smaller, manageable ones with deadlines. For example, if you're writing a dissertation, split it into chunks like data collection or writing the intro.
TAKE BREAKS
Taking breaks actually boosts productivity. Stretch, switch tasks, or take a short walk. The Pomodoro Technique is a cool way to work for short bursts and then take breaks.
MAKE TIME FOR YOU
Don't forget to take care of yourself. Schedule time for things you enjoy, like yoga or hanging out with friends. It's important to balance work and fun.
In Conclusion
Time management is key for academic success. Balancing school, social life, and self-care is vital. Planning, prioritizing, and taking breaks help reduce stress and increase productivity. By managing time effectively, you can get stuff done and still have time for yourself.
