HEY HI HELLO
Sorry for the random message here In the asks, it's ok if you don't see this or answer it since you probably got a lot already and I understand if you don't see this!/gen
But first of all, I just wanna say
I CANT BELIEVE I HAVENT WATCHED YOUR ANALYSIS VIDEO SOONER IM SO FUCKING LATE MAN
It's so well done and so fucking funny, I was literally smiling and cackling through the whole thing, it's shocking how similar our humor is
NOT TO MENTION THE END SCENE AREE YOU KIDDING HOW DID YOU MATCH THE LYRICS SO PERFECTLY TO THE FUCKING LORE ITS INCREDIBLE 😭💜/GEN, POS
It's insane how much dedication is put into it, let alone singlehandedly feeding turbo fans as myself
Genuinely thought it's so nice seeing more content for a hyperfixation I've had since 2012, and the fandom coming back along with this video Genuinely brings me so much joy as someone who's loved this movie since I was a kid
Sorry for the ramble but genuinely thank you for making that video, I can't wait to see what other stuff you do, wreck it ralph or not I WILL be tuning in/gen, pos
Okay second of all
The main reason why I'm sending this is because of sometning I noticed while rewatching a scene in the movie
Now, this might be me over analyzing as I usually do but it feels TOO. OBVIOUS.
SO
IN the kart bakery scene where vanellope and ralph go to bake a kart, they obviously make their way into the building and into the main room
You see all the Karts of course, and It pans to the one vanellope chooses
Which, at first glance you wouldn't really pay too much attention, especially when watching it for the first time, she's just picking the model she likes
..but looking back at the scene
Vanellope's kart model, how it was supposed to look, looks very
Familiar
Because the kart she chose..
...is a red and white kart
With stripes down the middle, with a very similar shape to a..certain persons kart. Now this might just be nothing, it's probably just like I said, and over analysis on my part
But the kart the chose looks WAY too similar to turbo's, not to mention the stripe is down the middle, just like turbo's car on the cabinet art of him
And vanellope could've chosen ANY kart
But it was that specific kart she chose, out of any of the karts
Not to mention in some of vanellope's concept art...
(Art made by Lorelay Bove)
..Vanellope's concept design and turbos designs strike SCARILY uncanny resemblances to each others designs
From the helmet and colors
All the way down to her GOGGLES having the SAME. YELLOW. TINT. that candy's have in the movie, which have the same effect here. There's no way that this didn't have the intent to mirror turbo purposefully
So with that in mind, the kart vanellope chose in the kart bakery scene being turbo foreshadowing, wouldn't be too out of place, nor would it be too far off
Turbo's foreshadowing was always prominent, even in the smallest details you wouldn't focus on, just like he's infecting this world as a virus, little by little, everywhere. You. Turn.
Aaaand that's basically all I have to really say
Sorry for the long ramble, I've been thinking of submitting this for awhile now, especially after I told a friend about this and they mentioned that this should be submitted to you
So I decided to go ahead and just do it, no matter how wild my comparisons might sound-
Anyways, I hope you have a good day, night, or what time it may be, and keep being awesome! I can't wait to hear back if you see this! Bye-bye! ❤️🏎🏆
P.s
I've been quoting these since I watched the video and haven't stopped
Thanks for destroying my humor even more-/pos
Okay bye bye now-
-skitters away-
NO YOU'RE SO FUCKING RIGHT OH MY GOD VANELLOPE WAS ALWAYS A TURBO PARALLEL??? CHAT IS THIS TRUE. IVE NEVER SEEN THAT CONCEPT ART OF HER TEEHEE THANKS FOR SHARING
also God. This is 99% just a coincidence with zero merit because its such a common gesture- but Ralph and Vanellope doing their thumbs up.. maybe Turbo parallels ?? and like the EXACT same poses too:
Vanellope having one hand on the steering wheel and the other doing a thumbs up while facing the camera.
Ralph hunched over doing the double thumbs up with the visor tinting his face yellow. EXCUSE ME HMMM?? WHAT THE FUCK??
NOW COULD I BE CHERRY PICKING? PERHAPS. but when Turbo has barely a minute of screentime, there's not a lot i can pick from, and things SURE ARE LINING UP... (I'm cherry picking)
SO SHHHHHH... ❤️❤️❤️❤️ LET ME HAVE MY LITTLE CONSPIRASCY
#🎬#OK IM ACTUALLY GOING CRAZY NOW#ANALYSIS#OH MY GODF.#long post#turbo#wreck it ralph#vanellope#ralph#im. i cant ianymore#paralells#HES EVERYWHERE#OUHGHHHH HE'S SUCH A FUCKING CRYPTID#ask#also thank you for the ask teehee im glad you enjoyed :)#wir video

i will preface this by saying that i LOVE buggy, he is a character that i'm always delighted to see on a page and i find him funny charismatic and entertaining and even sometimes sympathetic. but some parts of the fandom have completely lost the plot with buggy.
the thing is that everything that has ever happened to buggy is self-inflicted because he's a greedy, conniving little shit who abandons people at the drop of a hat. people seem to have forgotten that the reason he lost his ability to swim and became a devil fruit user is because he volunteered to eat the fruit when no one else wanted it, but rather than actually eat it as he claimed to want to do, he tried to sneak it away so he could sell it for personal gain, along with the treasure map that he hid away from his crew.
if he hadn't tried to hide that fact from shanks, he wouldn't have been startled into eating it and if he weren't such a treasure-obsessed little clown, he wouldn't have jumped overboard for that map and he wouldn't have needed shanks to save him.
in loguetown, shanks made a decision to hold off on going after the one piece and even invited buggy to join his crew! he did not on any level betray, hurt, or otherwise harm buggy, who decided that his own ambition and self-esteem issues were somehow shanks's problem to resolve for him. the one who abandoned his childhood friend on the most traumatic day (thus far) of their lives was buggy! shanks does not even owe him the time of day, much less an apology.
shanks does not think about buggy at ALL. whitebeard thought more about buggy and shanks than shanks thinks about buggy and shanks. shanks's reaction to being asked about buggy was oh yeah we split up and haven't talked since. i think he's still a pirate?
when they met up again at marineford, shanks gave absolutely ZERO shits about buggy and the first thing he did was manipulate him into giving luffy his hat. zero great pirates take buggy seriously, as they shouldn't, because he's a pathetic loser clown. if anything, shanks is completely confident of buggy's ability to lie, steal and bluff his way to prominence, which is the only thing he deserves any amount of respect for.
buggy has had numerous opportunities to make a compassionate, kind choice and he has rejected every single one of them in favor of being a self-serving, greedy bastard. and the thing is i don't even hold that against him-- i'm sure the pirate king's crew did nothing to discourage a pirate from being a self-centered survivalist. it takes a lot of strength to be a kind pirate, which i don't think anyone would blame buggy for not having. i LOVE that buggy succeeds by being the very essence of a PIRATE.
but all of buggy's problems are buggy-made!!! the fact that this is repeatedly emphasized in the series isn't a mistake by oda, buggy is very deliberately an unsympathetic loser because he fucking sucks! that's the appeal! if anyone holds the genuine belief that shanks is in any way at fault for buggy's terrible life choices, they have fallen for the clown's lies. shanks has made a LOT of bad decisions in his life but none of them are buggy-related. every time i see an essay about how buggy was deeply wronged by the people around him (especially shanks) i just think of those guys from impel down going like 'OHHHH OUR LORD AND SAVIOR BUGGY... HE'S SO NOBLE AND POWERFUL... HE IS THE SUN AND THE SKY HE IS EVERYTHING' like please 😭
but obviously i don't control what people do or how they engage with canon or characters or whatever. its just incredible to see. casting him as more sympathetic or having been wronged by others in some way is missing the point entirely. he's a guy who was given EVERY opportunity to succeed and he simply decided to suck so so so much instead and he STILL manages to fail up. it's HYSTERICAL.
#one piece#buggy the clown#red haired shanks#the only buggy understanders are people who love him#and do not take him seriously at ALL#op meta#buggy SUCKS and he gets repeatedly punished by the narrative for it#because he doesnt even suck in a smart way#and its so so so so funny

As a certified Springtrap simp, which backstory for William do you prefer: one where he was a good dad driven mad maybe by jealousy or the loss of his youngest child, or one where he was always an abusive narcisist that cared for nobody but himself?
i feel like the, "im evil so i must also abuse my creations and/or children" has been really overdone. like idk im just tired of seeing it personally. and the whole "haha!!! im craaaazy!!" thing we get in the comics also rubs me the wrong way b/c. thats not. how he's portrayed in the games at all. esp hearing him in sister location he feels like he would be a calm sort of madness. he seems like a rational guy. he doesnt talk like that. he doesnt act like that. it seems really contradictory
i feel like him being a good dad (or at the least caring deeply for his children) gives him more urgency and like,,,,makes sense w/what we're given. it aligns the most w/the theories we have asta why he started killing etc. i also just enjoy the tragedy of it. he started out as a good guy w/good intentions and then was twisted inta something unrecognizable b/c he was so focused on tryin ta reach his goal. personally my hc is that he was jelly of henry and then the death of crying child tipped him over the edge and started his whole killing thing. imo its better than, "hee hoo i was evil FOREVER!! im PURE evil and have always been EVIL!!!" like. okay. wheres the subsistence?? give him depth dammit
why would he build a robot for his daughter if he didnt love her. why would he tell crying child he would put him back together if he didnt love him (not really cemented as something he said, but i mean who else would say it?? certainly not michael he was a boy. i think as a fandom we assume its heavily implied). it makes the afton kid's deaths so much more impactful. the prospect of this man losing pieces of his life bit by bit and being driven insane by it is enthralling
i love a good chaotic descent. i love thinking abt him being consumed w/a need ta revive his own son becoming obsessed w/life and death as a result. oh the irony of loving your own kid so much you would take others children away from them, knowing how losing your own felt. and the twisting of emotions as he sees his son michael someone who he would've died for, try ta stop him. b/c hes not understanding, they need ta b together again. thats all hes tryin ta do. get his family back tagether. and all these fucking obstacles are in the way of his only goal. and the manifestation of hatred of his own son b/c of this. b/c hes getting in his way. like, talk abt juicy. i want that man ruined. it just adds a layer of psychological torture that i just adore. william fucking ruined everything. he ruined his own happy family, he ruined his own life, and if he actually mourns that? chefs kiss.
my thought is, why even have him have a family in the first place if they're just there ta demonstrate he's evil? seeing the afton family purely as a plot device, we already know afton killed kids. one can assume a person who kills kids is a bad person (maybe? see this is where the juiciness comes in w/him caring for his children. is it really bad from his perspective if hes trying ta save his kid? or is it noble?) so we dont need ta b demonstrated ta that hes a bad person again. if hes just pure evil from the get go it doesnt make sense ta me ta have the afton kids be prominent in the story (besides michael, but even then he could probably be replaced by one of the victims family members) when you could illustrate the same point by focusing on the kids hes killed and their families. why do the afton kids matter if he treats all children the same. why are we focusing so much on the afton family and what appear ta b major story beats in their story, especially since the children he has killed do not get as fleshed out as the aftons do. i feel like if his family wasnt important ta him we wouldnt hear abt it at all. you could achieve the same message by making him single and childless.
do u kno how many stories there are of "Righteous Child Of A Horrible Guy Who Hates Everything, Even Their Own Family, Goes Out Ta Stop Their Parent And Save The Day" there are? its b/c its too easy!!! its too easy for u ta assume that a character is the worst and has been the worst forever!!! its too easy ta assume that an evil character would abuse their family!!! its too easy ta assume an evil character wouldn't have traits besides jealousy, hatred and narcissism!!!!
#spacie splains#idk i think of things really objectively#i dont like clutter in my stories i like things ta have a point#and i like them ta serve a purpose and be unique. not just demonstrate the same facts over and over again#unless thats like a theme and intentional but yk#like i said i dont like the 'im evil and treat my family like shit' trope#overdone ta hell and back#so its a personal thing#thank you for asking me abt this! i love talking abt him as u can see :)#give me morally grey characters give me characters who descend inta the worst version of themselves for ways they could have prevented#give me characters who know they're spiraling give me characters who know its wrong but cant stop#give me characters who do horrible things for a cause that is sentimental and noble ta them#give me characters who you can understand why they did that even if it was awful#WOW I TALKED A LOT#.....8 years of brainrot‚ even if i wasnt conscious of it#I DONT LIKE THE EASY ROAD!!! I DONT WANT TA BLINDLY HATE HIM I WANT 2 THINK!!!#i like these rants i do so ill tag him#as a treat ta myself#william afton#fnaf#you: ask me a simple 'hey which one do u prefer?' me: here is my whole dissertation on the subject that is william afton

Quick note the kid plays Young Leia in a Star Wars show so...
1. We know how Hollywood tears kids apart so Brandon needs to be fucking extra careful
2. She works for Disney. Now while she's not on the Disney channel the only known actress to come out of that unscathed is Zendaya but Disney is EXTREMELY controlling of young stars so Brandon may have ruined her employment chances there.
3. This photo doesn't just ruin her future employment with Disney but other places since most of the time kid actors get most of their jobs with shows aimed at kids or families. Having her make art or promote an adult show or be associated with a creator/actor with exclusivy adult content might make some companies be less likely to hire unless she has done a bunch of acting already since they don't want that stuff to mix with their family friendly shit.
4. This also reminds me when I was still in the fandom how weirded out I was that they casted child actors for the young versions of Stolas, Blitzo, and Fizz. Like Helluva is animated... You don't need to that especially when the grown up versions are VERY NOT CHILD FRIENDLY. Like get a grown woman to voice the kid versions instead for gods sake.
Don't have much to add as I'll be repeating what you said anon but 100% agree. Looking deeper into this situation is all that you mentioned above, they put this child at risk career wise present and future, her safety (posting her pic on a public platform associated with an adult show/ as you said Hollywood), Brandon were so ignorant and irresponsible doing this, yeah he can't forsee all the repercussions but as an ADULT in the industry he should know and used his discretion. On the child VAs they used... sigh. Leander Lewis who voiced young Stolas is 14/15, Mason Blomberg who voiced young Blitz is 11/12, Juliana Sada is minor who voiced young Octavia. These are children Voice acting in an adult cartoon show. And its not like you can say they're used to doing VA work on adult media, this seems like their 1st time doing such work
Mason Blomberg: (9-1-1 is an adult show but it doesn't compare to helluva with its raunchy humor and content)
Leander Lewis:
Juliana Sada (again wasn't in raunchy adult shows)
And this is the post on Mason's insta announcing it and sighs to the moon, why is a child a VA on an adult show, Viv should NEVER have reached out to them to do va work, "adult cartoon, not suitable for kids" but has kid VAs on it you could've easily gotten an adult to VA your young characters.
Comes back to what I say, Viv and them don't make rational decisions like an adult should. You know your fandom is full of minors, be more active and she can since Viv is more prominent in her fandom than other creators, reprimand fans bullying and harassing minors in fandom and stick by your word and remind minors that this aint a kids show because again Viv is VERY active in her fandom. In conclusion /try to keep minors at all costs away from your adult raunchy shows. Be it them doing VA work, at cons, in fandom ect TRY TO KEEP THEM AWAY.

16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)
Ooc: Oh the biggest one is Adam in the series. I especially hate the protrayal of him wanting to assault Lillith and Charlie in a certain way (ive seen it before from a couple of roleplayers and ugh its disgusting).
As soon as he was introduced i was bothered. I was already concerned with how Spindle Horse was going to portray Heaven, and having a misogynist, loud, hateful figure like Adam as a lead exorcist screwed with my head in so many ways.
I understand his character could be a representation of how some corrupt leaders use religion for control, and that is a fact of life that I've struggled so much with. I am a believer, and I am afraid of certain traits becoming more prominent in those who share my faith. It sucks that I can't escape that even in fiction. It's depressed me so heavily. Since then I felt more alienated from the fandom and I regret sinking in it.
Yet people love him and that specific protrayal and I fucking don't know why.
#doedsdans#Violence mention#Religion mention#Noncon mention#I'm sorry this bothered me for a long time

Thoughts on new Dragon Age "teaser"? You have the best takes.
I'll be deadly honest, I didn't even realise it was out, that's how checked out I am, but I will always fall hook line and sinker for a delicious bait made of things I can chew on, so let's seeeeeee. I'll do first impressions for now. I'll warn you, I haven't done 'takes' in ages, I've seriously lost my edge and resemble someone yelling at a cloud more than someone with intelligent or at least entertaining takes. Proceed on your own volition. Note, I have not been keeping up with DA4 updates. At all. I am literally grasping at straws and screaming out of my arse.
I'll say this. I believe Mark Darrah who had retired from BioWare was brought back on to save this tattered ship that had failed to launch how many times now? If you were with DAI and Anthem especially, you know that when a vet of that calibre is being brought on board towards the end of production, you're fucked. The sheer scope of the regions visited in the trailer... I wouldn't blink an eye if it was a turn-based strategy game, but it is not.
I'm surprised how shit the game visually looks, but it's been my criticism with the thus far released art, and now, environment assets. And again, I'm coming off of Anthem, and Anthem was truly, truly gorgeous. Now someone might argue that every DA has had its distinctive visual style. Well I thought DA2, for what it was, sure did look inspired. I didn't enjoy the game or the characters, but I enjoyed looking at it. Dragon Age Inquisition kind of lost me aesthetically, but I see what they did there. It was more generic, certainly not attempting to be photorealistic, but I saw the idea and accepted it.
Now this though? What is this? The panning over what I presume is Treviso literally looks like a mobile game ad.
Ok, fine, I'll not go in on the visuals, I'm too fresh out of art college and I'm so anal-retentive that my o-ring's more pinched than a pinprick about this stuff. Moving on.
I believe the new PC is an Antivan Crow? Since when are they fighting for all of Antiva? Everyone??? Since when?! Zevran's canonically not returning, and even he was compassionately practical on his best days. The Crows are not good people. They buy kids to train for miserable jobs meeting miserable ends. Oh, so we had a whole character who gave the Crows a finger for being the shitshow they were, but now they're this resistance task force? What, why, because the 'Islamic Borg' invaded?
Then. I feel like I'm missing a fuckton of contest because I haven't read the preceding comics and stories, I have one comic book from the DAI-DA4 interim and it ended so disappointingly, I never bothered after that.
We're really retconning all the complex and complicated factions into freedom fighters, aren't we. I guess such is the state of our real world. Always a plucky band of people belonging to formerly shitty fucking organisations suddenly saving the day like heroes, possibly somewhere along the way ruminating for 2 seconds on whether they deserve to pat themselves on the back, landing on 'but we will change how we operate, and we will save the world, always!'
I'm into the Rivaini squid though. I've never been fond of Rivain, not just because parts of the fandom like to present this place that has barely been talked about in canon like some haven for... idk. I just didn't expect squids. And you people know I love marine invertebrates. You know what, fuck it, here's my 'best take': have squid, will travel!
But that port city ravaged recently by the dragons in ruins looks like it's been in ruins for the past 2000 years, only recently excavated. It's so clean. And here I go again with the aesthetics.
Anyway, Falon'din and/or dirthamen is fuckin' around in Rivain, aren't they. Because I believe that head shape, multi-hands etc were presented in many of the statues we saw in DAII, and given that Falon'din's proverbial crows, envy and nightmare were so prominently featured, and sexyman Solas' outright resentment for former master Dirthamen and the vain Falon'din, welll... risen gods. Dirthamen at the very least was associated with watery depths, but they're twins (or are they? Perhaps the facets of one person altogether)... Anyway, I'm more interested in what the fuck is happening in Weisshaupt. That part genuinely interests me. Circling back to Dirthamen, Razikale is the dragon of Mystery. Associated with Dirthamen, at least according to my theory, while Urthemiel was the Dragon of Beauty, and we keep getting indications that Falon'din was pretty, aggressive, and exceedingly vain. So Big Dirty's up next. Falon'din had the crows, right? Both defeated in DAI. He's out, more or less. And again, Solas most likely was Dirthamen's student before he decided that he himself didn't want to be but totally wanted to be revered. So my take is that Razikale, who got mentions in DAI is waking up as well.
The villain gods of this mess, the classic Dragon Age false gods we fight in every single game as end bosses, will be connected to Dirt. Eh. Same eagle, different liver.
Anyway I have a doubt that this kind of scope will end anywhere nice. The production's been fraught as fuck to the point where the panic button has been pressed many times. The art looks like a significant downgrade, the production has been filled with veterans just clocking the fuck out.
It doesn't sound interesting. I'm tired of saving the world as an Eastern European in late 2023. This kind of story does not speak to me at all anymore. Not after 2019, not after 2021. It looks dated and mediocre, the story is so old that if it goes where I think it will, it has no relevance or message for anybody but perhaps some American audiences (some). I'm just... I'm not.
The rah-rah I got from that clip leaves me ice cold. There is no rah-rah in such widespread misery. There are only curse words and the sound of grinding teeth, and everybody's a dick, and everybody's dick past is dredged up hard. No retcons.
I don't want it. It better receive insanely high marks for me to play it. And I loved this franchise, two of the PCs have gone on to be archetypal in my private works now.
The mystery is gone. The power creep... I don't want to hang out with gods. They should have never been brought into the story as characters you can extensively hang out with. Edit: basically the entire thing sounds about as exciting as a somewhat well-produced mobile game. Which is fun to fuck with while taking the metro, but...
#maybe i'm still just salty about anthem#it actually looked beautiful#it was fresh and earnest and clunky and fun and had promise#instead we're dragging this old lame horse out of the barn and insisting on riding it#and boy does this old mare look miserable

*squints* People do fucking what?
My favourite fics generally involve switching, but like, thank all the AO3 gods that people are happy to write anything explicit because we'd all starve to death otherwise. My poor tiny brain loves reading smut, but gets as far as "NOW KISS" if it tries to imagine something on its own. Praise be to you and other explicit writers who give us a selection to choose from. Our fic fridges are full with a nutritionally balanced diet.
I carry this burden gladly 🫡
The vast majority of my fics are born because I want to write a particular sex scene. JJK is kind of an anomaly for me, actually, because I usually don't do even this degree of plot. But basically, I just love writing characters getting kinky, preferably with a level or three of character study worked in.
But yes, people do indeed do that. T/b discourse has been prominent in most of my fandoms, but it's been a while since I've had to field it personally.
On the one hand, I do think there are important and interesting conversations to be had about how people view sex, especially penetrative sex, and how stories frame it: for instance, the way topping is equated with greater masculinity and bottoming with femininity, and how this is often countered by an equally nonsensical narrative of switching signalling equality. On the other hand, these are best limited to social spaces without targeting specific fics/authors or attacking anyone because, ultimately, most porn is id-driven self-indulgence. This isn't meant as criticism; id-driven self-indulgence is the backbone of fantasy and whimsy, not just in porn, and I'm no different: I'm a top, so I like writing/reading my favorite characters as tops—nothing deep about it.
As always, lines get crossed and drama brews when people try to inflict their personal preferences on fandom as a whole while also trying to invent "moral" or "objective" reasons to justify their stance.
Things would be fine if we all just peacefully play with our toys the way we want, without pestering people for "doing it wrong." Alas.

i just binge-played off over the course of a couple days so let's relate that back to homestuck now
exactly what the title says. WARNING for spoilers of off, undertale, & omori (and homestuck. obviously), all fairly minor but involving some of talk about endings, as well as warning for canon-typical suicide talk (distri moment)
TLDR: off & undertale both use meta elements in a neat way, especially for their more horrific/fucked up parts, ult. dirk is definitely being puppetted by something (lord english, it's lord english).
so just as the title says, i've recently spent the last few days playing through the game off (also yume nikki but i haven't found a homestuck connection there so i guess you all will have to wait for that essay), and after poking around a bit for other interpretations of the themes & story i stumbled across this video that's given me some ideas about the post-canon content again, since i apparently can't stop relating everything back to that. specifically, the conclusion that he comes to near the end about the "real" story of off being a kind of parody of other rpgs where you mindlessly follow a protagonist's divine mission while actually just brutally exterminating/destroying an entire world of beings reminded me a lot of a criticism i heard of the epilogues that said it felt like the creators just watched the hbomberguy undertale video and decided to do that, but badly.
i talked about this a bit in my last essay about the post-canon stuff (don't be surprised if you missed that one btw, i got nervous and buried it under a mountain of reblogs ;v;), but one of the things that really fucking gets my goat about the epilogues & hs^2 is the fact that the creators both 1. talk down to the audience so goddamn much, and 2. are actively antagonistic to the audience, in a way that even homestuck proper never really felt, which, just to say, is also weird as hell to me because homestuck wasn't exactly nice to its audience either?? there has always been this back and forth between audience & creator in this fandom that is a prominent underlying dynamic in both the story itself & responding fanworks (a notable example being theater of coolty, which i personally interpret to be more of a character study of hussie rather than dirk), but even ignoring the history of twitter battles & literal petitions to get creators off the team, post-canon homestuck wants to make you fucking hurt and it refuses to be subtle about that fact.
anyways, here's a couple sections working through my thoughts on all that into something slightly more coherent.
1. off & purification (ft. undertale, omori, & yume nikki)
one of the things that really stood out to me throughout my playthrough of off these last couple days is the ways in which "purification," as a concept is associated with the mission of the batter, and, more broadly, all of the heavily religious connotations associated with his extermination of/destruction of the world.
a cool feature of the games that i've been playing recently (e.g. off & yume nikki) is seeing retroactively how they influenced other wildly popular games that i've played before that came out after (namely, undertale & omori). in particular, this more recent generation seems to take huge inspiration from the previous specifically in some of their most fucked up/horror-related elements, largely through the use of similar imagery/ideas that are then incorporated into the context of a new, clearer storyline. a good example of this is how black space in omori takes a lot from the imagery/mechanics of yume nikki (sleeping, doors, fucked up rooms with weird floors, etc.) but re-contextualizes it within the storyline of sunny's trauma/mental state as presented through the earlier sections of the game.
undertale does this too, taking both from yume nikki and, for what i'm focusing on here, off. from what i can tell, undertale seems to have taken a lot of inspiration from off in the creation of both its genocide route and the more meta elements of the game in general, which is interesting to me specifically in the interpretation of off it gives back retrospectively.
if you haven't watched it (though you really should it's only like ten minutes long) the key point that the hbomberguy video about undertale revolves around is the idea that at some point the game actively wants you to stop playing it and let the story & characters go. this is most obvious throughout the genocide route where characters in the game repeatedly & explicitly tell the player to give up, go back, and leave them the fuck alone, but notably also at the end of a true pacifist run where upon reopening up the game flowey pops up to tell the player to leave everyone be & let them enjoy their happy ending.
the divine quest of purification that the batter goes on throughout off (as is implied through his own words) is a lot less overt about the fact that its just murder & destruction but that element is definitely there, especially when revisiting the zones post-purification. the batter, bluntly speaking, gives no shits about the fact that he destroying everything in his path, even when enemies start switching from ghostly specters to "burned" people (or coughing children). if anything, destruction of the world is his outright goal as evidenced by the ending w/ the titular flipping of the switch "off," and he seems more surprised to come across people that claim to be happy when running through the area of cannibalism sugar drugs in zone 3 than all of the typical misery elsewhere. the repeated use of the word "purification," & heavy religious symbolism found throughout the game give this path of destruction a very different connotation to undertale's genocide route, however.
this ties into the use of meta elements in both games, which are also quite different: where undertale explicitly appeals to the player in quite a few instances when it's trying to get players to stop playing/taunting them about saves & whatnot, off only breaks the fourth wall in a few notable places, primarily through the judge & batter's dialogue at the start & end of the game as well as the character zacharie, all of whom directly refer to the player as a separate entity in control of the batter, slightly different to how undertale distinguishes the player character both as frisk vs. chara but also as powerful player/human vs. npc/monster* (since flowey is also equated w/ the player through his ability to utilize saves).
*deltarune also hammers this shit in even more w/ the opening character creation sequence & the fact that you have to enter two names, for creation & creator.
so- how does all of this relate to homestuck's post-canon? one word: puppets. (and dirk. it's always dirk)
2. homestuck^2 hates you & wants you to know it (dirk & puppets)
the epilogues begin with a nightmare wherein john watches the entirety of paradox space, reality as he knows it, begin to fall into a crack in the void. the meaning of this dream is made very clear over the course of a conversation with rose soon after: the story is in danger of becoming "non-canon," after too many years without an official continuation, and if john wants to stop that from happening he's going to have to make a big decision. meat or candy: either john directly tries to deal with the leftover major plotholes of the original story, enacting the previously foreseen events of the masterpiece in order to stop lord english, or he can choose to stay on earth-c and continue with the rest of his life as is.
one thing that only gets more and more overt the more i read through the post-canon content, whether that be the actual material released or authors notes from the patreon archive, is the fact that these two timelines were built from the start to be nightmares of slightly different flavors. i've talked about this many times, and there's honestly so many things pointing to this that i think it'd be more helpful if i just wrote it out as an actual list by this point, so here you fuckin go:
calliope compares the decision between meat & candy to a coin flip, invoking the image of terezi's coin flip that led to the killing of vriska & thus the game over timeline (HS^2:406)
in the smut drawing conversation, caliborn strikes down the idea of a dirkjake drawing specifically because the colors green & orange invoke the image of pumpkins which he doesn't like, instead preferring meat & candy (A6A3:4971), thus tying the epilogues to the whims of homestuck's biggest endgame villain
another connection to caliborn: despite having 43 & 40 chapters for meat & candy respectively, each route of the epilogues is split into 8 sections, reflecting the fact that LE gets 8-ball eyes midway through act 7
meat & candy also reflect the kind of content that caliborn (as a stand-in for the kinds of annoying fanboys hussie hates) loves, w/ brutal violence, death, & a power-struggle involving alt. calliope in the meat route, and the horrors of heterosexual marriage & reproduction in candy
ult. dirk in particular seems to take a lot of influence from the more LE/caliborn-connected splinters of himself- the fact that there seems to be more of a focus on dirk & jake's relationship in particular in the post-canon content also points to more of caliborn's underlying influence since they're very connected to him (both thematically through their struggles w/ masculinity & their literal connections in the lore as the boys that caliborn is the closest to as he literally looks up to them as inspiration e.g. LE's outfit matching jake's, etc. etc.)
also when it comes to narrators, note that in meat the fight is between ult. dirk & alt. calliope for control over the story while in candy (as the archived patreon commentary notes very pointedly) it is unclear who the narrator actually is
the routes are also just. fucking bad, to an extreme that is both phrased initially like a joke through the numerous ao3 tags & very carefully, thoroughly executed. we begin with a timeskip and every character is just spontaneously the absolute worst version of themself w/ quite minimal explanation as to how they got that way other than "adulthood is just Like That". even ignoring Absolute Horrors like the dirk suicide chapter & the gamzee/jane breast milk thing, you don't tag and execute the concept of gerrymandering for no reason
anyway, there are two main ways that this connects to the undertale genocide/off discussion from before: meta elements & nightmarish world destruction. but first, speaking of meta elements:
2.1 the post-canon creators don't understand the concept of what "canon" means and they ain't gonna let us forget that
homestuck is really fucking good at making up the weirdest shit imaginable but presenting it in such a natural, meticulously careful way that by the time you're saying sentences like, "He took the hammer which had been captchalogued into his sylladex and made it his strife specibus," you barely even realize you're doing it. the singular exception to this is the use of the word "post-canon" in all content created after the run of the original comic, which fails so incredibly to establish itself as a new term that it's honestly kind of embarrassing. every single time i have to write the term "post-canon" in relation to homestuck i cringe a little bit inside at just how unnatural it feels and frustrating it is to type. imo there are a few distinct reasons why the attempt to call the epilogues/homestuck^2 post-canon fails so badly:
"canon" as a term already has a very strongly established practical use within fandom: namely, to distinguish between original ("canon") works & fan-made creations like fanfiction, fan art, etc. this is to the point that an alternative, related term, "fanon," is also used to distinguish creations on the other side of the line.
the use of "canon" in fandom is thus typically quite intuitive, in that a creation is either "official," (created by the same person & set within the same universe, created by a person closely related to the original creator & clearly established to be connected to the original work, etc.) or not. there is no in-between of canon vs. fanon, it is simply a clear line distinguishing between what is considered official and what isn't.
in the cases where it isn't necessarily as clear if something is canonical, whether that be due to the work being done by a different creator, long after the work is over, etc. (e.g. the yume nikki comic, jk rowling's dumb baseless twitter ramblings, etc.) the word "canon" is often dropped entirely with the context of the new works instead being invoked to clarify the distinction
people tend to only feel the need to distinguish between the original/"canonical" run of a story & its new content/additions when they fucking hate the new additions. nobody says that deltarune is not canonical just because it doesn't connect to the original undertale universe, they just say its in a different universe & take note of the implications. on the other side of things, even ignoring rowling's stupid ass tweets, people have been ignoring the epilogue to the final book of harry potter for ages simply because it sucks & many people hate the kind of future it presents
"post-canon" does not make any goddamn sense. no amount of ao3 formatting or desperate pleas from the creators can take away from the fact that the epilogues & hs^2 show up on the official website, were in part outlined by the original creator, & pick up the story right from where the comic ends. i can turn around in my seat right this second & look to my right to see a shelf where the words "THE HOMESTUCK EPILOGUES" is printed twice on the spine of the official goddamn book (don't ask why i bought that thing. i was in a distraught mental state in 2019 okay) printed by viz fucking media, come the fuck on you guys.
this is all to say that the meta elements of the epilogues & hs^2 (okay i'm gonna start saying post-canon again but remember. remember) is pretty fucking weird to begin with, and that's not even accounting for the direct antagonism that the continuations take when addressing the audience.
a key quality of the epilogues that make them come across as particularly nightmarish comes from the fact that so many aspects seem to be specifically designed to hurt the audience as much as physically possible. characters like jane & dirk fall into villainy and become the worst versions of themselves and more with very little regard for the reasons why they might've been sympathetic originally. even outside of those two obvious examples, there are a lot of elements that seem to only exist to make the audience hurt. the most overtly edgy example of this is the chapter in candy where dirk very graphically commits suicide (which comes entirely out of nowhere with basically no warning- the trigger warning wasn't added until later), but there are a shitton of minor examples that slowly build up to make even just reading through the epilogues an agonizing experience if you ever bothered to care about any of the characters involved. imo even characters like dave, karkat, & vriska, all of whom are generally considered to have gotten through alright by the greater fandom, suffer when it comes to characterization, dave & karkat from how much it feels like they've backtracked on character development when it comes to self awareness, and vriska because the creators are frankly unable to face any of the major character flaws that made her actually interesting, instead preferring to depict her as this tired hero above everyone else come back to earth to save everyone from the horrific versions of themselves the authors twisted them into to create plot.
what really stands out throughout all of this though, and is the reason why that connection between the epilogues & the hbomberguy undertale video was originally made, is the fact that the epilogues contextualize all of this suffering as a punishment for the audience wanting more out of the story- a point which especially stands out since, as far as i can remember, end of comic homestuck fans really didn't give that much of a shit about a continuation? while the response to act 7 & homestuck's ending was fairly disappointed, and there was some talk about a continuation after it got teased by some elevated fans with a closer connection to hussie, the consensus that i remember was that the epilogues were the snapchat update and that was it. lasting homestuck fans from 2016-2019 seemed to have come to understand that the ending was unsatisfying due to being planned far in advance and/or executed quickly so that hussie could get the story fuckin finished already after the last few years of long breaks & legal disputes surrounding what would be hiveswap, and many of the people who stuck with the fandom after the comic ended were late fans that were already well-acquainted with archive reading & thus cared much less about the original ravenous upd8 culture. the epilogues coming right out the gate trying to punish readers for wanting more therefore not only felt cruel, but confusing considering the more recent vibe of what the fandom felt like.
so, to link this all back together- between these three stories (off, undertale, & homestuck's post-canon) we end up with three different takes on how to incorporate meta elements w/ horror:
for off, meta elements are largely incorporated through the separation of the player & the batter, with certain notable characters referring directly to the player (or even referring to the game itself, as in the case of zacharie). the destruction of the world is given the connotations of a religious crusade through the batter's talk of "purification," with the supposed "official" ending of the game leaving the world entirely destroyed and gone, and the "special" bonus ending (where you pick the judge) leaving it desaturated and depopulated. a potential interpretation of this can thus be that the game acts as a meta commentary on other games of the same genre, twisting the typical routine of, "play as a dude going a something something vague mission for justice while destroying/murdering everything in your path," into something more explicitly horrifying. the path of divine destruction that the batter goes on w/ little to no regard for the suffering of the world is something that typically makes players quite uncomfortable, many people choosing to side with the judge by the end of the game despite siding with the batter being the "official" default ending.
for undertale, meta elements are utilized through characters like flowey & sans, most obviously in the genocide route where characters actively ask you to stop playing but also in true pacifist where flowey asks you to let them keep their happy ending. the horror of the game comes from the fact that the player has power unmatched by any of the characters in-game through the use of saves, clarified within the lore as a distinction between humans (players) & monsters (npcs) with some timeline fuckery thrown in for flavor. "punishment" of the player is introduced through sans & his genocide-run boss battle following the judgement of the player, which notably only happens when someone explicitly goes through and grinds out the killing of every single major & minor fight in every area of the game.
for homestuck's post-canon, meta elements are utilized through characters directly engaging with the concept of what it means to be "canon," and narration fuckery, as seen most notably through the character of ult. dirk taking over the narration in the meat timeline. nightmarish elements are present throughout the structure & content of each timeline largely through how they relate to LE, homestuck's main villain. "punishment" of the reader is introduced by contextualizing the inclusion of the most terrible elements as a way of punishing audiences for wanting more, enacted by the continuation's creators.
SO. puppets fuck i forgot about the puppets
3. what kind of villain is dirk trying to be, actually (okay we're actually talking about the puppet thing now)
at the end of off, the separation between the batter & the player is again emphasized through the final decision where you choose between siding with the batter (the "official" ending) or the judge (the "special" ending). no matter what you choose, the battle ends up fairly easy, affirming the fact that it is up to your choice as the player to decide who wins the fight. the player is fairly explicitly denoted as the puppeteer, and if the batter succeeds in his mission to destroy the world, the blame is placed on the player for going through with playing the game.
in undertale, the identity of the human moving through the underground is different depending on which route you take: frisk in the pacifist route, and chara/the player-entered name in genocide. at the end of the genocide route, chara takes over entirely, stopping the player from even being able to get the final hit in to kill the final boss before killing the player themself.
there is a pretty distinct difference between how off & undertale are able to tell their story in the context of a game vs. how homestuck tells its story as a mostly set-in-stone comic (at least now), but the key theme continuing throughout all of these stories as far as i see it comes down to one thing: puppets. WHICH is especially significant considering the fact that dirk, The Puppet Guy, is now one of the big post-canon villains, in part taking on the role of LE in parallel to jane taking on the role of HIC.
this post has been fucking long enough so i'll get to the point already: the whole path of destruction and quest to purify the world that the batter goes through in off feels very reminiscent of some of dirk's actions in the post-canon content, and that seems significant when considering who dirk is likely being puppetted by, LE (homestuck has a reader, but no player, so who is controlling who is marginally less obvious).
that's probably not too big of a surprise, especially considering that long ass list i wrote out a couple sections ago, but i think it could be notable in trying to contextualize dirk's actions throughout the story. in particular, it stands out to me that dirk's first big action within the meat timeline before going totally batshit is helping jane with her political campaign against karkat, which as we can see in the candy timeline is a terrible fucking idea considering she seems to be going right down the same path of fascism & troll eugenics in meat.
dirk isn't stupid, but here especially it's weird that he would be so down for jane getting political power, considering 1. he knows jane very well (very well, if we consider his heart aspect & ability to read people due to that), and 2. he knows the condesce very well. dirk is a fucking historian combing through documentation of the end of humanity, he's aware of what a global dictatorship looks like. he's smart, but as i said in my plato intelligence post, he's not necessarily on the same level as other omniscient narrators. it's the same problem as before, dirk is pretending to be the puppeteer but really has very little control over the actual situation. the idea that his "ascent to power" in the epilogues is actually just him becoming everyone's brain ghost has a lot of merit to me because of this.
in a similar vein, i've been thinking about this post a lot in terms of how ultimate dirk has taken on a lot of the traits of dave's bro (who also could fit in w/ the "who's the puppet/really in control" theme w/ how he is potentially being puppetted by a literal puppet. god there's too many fucking puppets). that leads me to a pretty major & interesting question to consider too: does ultimate dirk even have a soul? lots of implications depending on how you answer that. i made a joke not long ago about ult. dirk being just another dirk splinter that he created while attempting to deal with all the dirk splinters, but that idea might have more weight to it along these lines.
counterpoint though, i have to question if ult. dirk's goals really fall along the same lines of "purification" as the batter. his goal of creating a new sburb session (? iirc)/world creation is pretty much the direct opposite of the batter's world destruction, but i think we all know the prince's relationship with destruction by now. conclusion: the baby is 2 was the correct timeline all along. babies are the true ultimate creation, let's make this shit text already. (sorry, i've been watching a lot of evangelion lately.)
anyways. this post has been a WIP for a couple days and i'm starting to seriously lose the thread of the original thought, so i guess i'll just cut this off here with a couple minor sidenotes. this all came to kind of a simple, somewhat obvious point, but i think the exploration itself was decently interesting so. yeah!
sidenote1: sugar & lollipops
what is it with sweets being the most fucked up drugs imaginable in these stories. actually no, i get it, sugar is the closest you can get to the idea of drugs as a child, that kinda works. homestuck does have a surprising lack of cannibalism though, like even the trolls-eating-grubs thing is pretty weak. sad.
sidenote2: jake & religion
just thought it was interesting that the batter's purification quest has so many religious undertones (the add-ons having the roles of "father, son, & holy spirit," the names of other characters, etc.), though i don't have much of a connection here other than that jake (& karkat, really) also have a lot of the same thematic associations. not that big of a deal considering, but kinda interesting to note nonetheless (maybe w/ some interesting implications for ult. jake???)
sidenote3: davesprite & namco high
absolutely could not find a place to shove this in but the davesprite route in namco high is so fucking meta, has anyone still in this fandom even played that thing? the justification there is that davesprite gained meta awareness as a sprite & game guide, which i guess carries over to namco high too. feels very reminiscent of a lot of ideas to show up more prominently later, at the very least. hm.
#fuck this was a long one#long to read but also a long time to write for some reason??#sorry if it feels especially incoherent this time i had to take a break from writing for a bit for irl stuff#oh also#if anyone is still interested i AM reading the timaeus now#so that dirk plato post is a WIP. a slow WIP but a still a WIP#astronaut rambles#hs#off#nut dealer

Any examples about the gamtav artist thing?
i dont really want to give examples because i dont want to shit on specific artists even if they piss me off but i can elaborate on shit ive noticed . gonna get ranty so :
tl;dr : gamtav artists who are weird about gamzee and dont care about tavros have a weird way of characterising both which makes me very uncomfortable and im upset about it because im a little hater . and also because its gross and annoying
i feel like a lot of gamtav artists who just like gamzee and dont care much for tav make it pretty clear they just want gamzee to get what he wants forever and always . which is Bad . thats pretty vague still but yknow ..
they make tavros just kind of . there as a support to gamzee to kiss all his problems away and make him happy and dont really do much of the other way around ( and if they do its always gamzee being like ' [fucked up font] I WILL PROTECT YOU ' while also acting like a romantic relationship would fix tavs problems with .. romance related shit . because they dont want to see the actual issues tavros was going through because they dont care enough about her
obviously the soft non-confrontational accessory-to-another-character characterization of tav isnt specific to gamtav shippers . it is very unfortunately huge in the fandom . but its still very common with them despite it going against .. everything that makes the ship potentially interesting imo .
tavros isnt soft she doesnt go along with everything someone wants of her . especially not a highblood are you fucking insane . tavros should reject gamzee after that initial conevrsation she did not fucking reciprocate ( i dont care about your fanfic ! you arent fixing shit ! ) and even if she did she made it very clear she still didnt want that relationship because give her a fucking break man . if its gonna happen let her come back in a few sweeps when she has less shit to come to terms with and start it up on her terms thats fine . this is the best way of doing it for both of them . gamzee doesnt get to immediately get what it wants and tavros actually gets a fucking say in things . its not that hard to understand
even if it isnt as obvious with some artists its still There . gamzee is the main character focused on in the relationship because the artist just . really doesnt know enough about tavros to write about her further than ' gamzees [girl]friend who [vague traits about her that might not even be canon] ' . and they probably dont care .
they dont care that tavros should be more mean for her own good even if its just playful banter they dont care thered realistically be some conflict between the two if they were ever actually involved with eachothers lives to that extent they dont care that they characterize tavros the way shes expected to act by other characters and not how she actually does . they dont care that tavros is a character separate from the ship they have reduced her down to despite her having ONE ONSCREEN CONVERSATION with gamzee . two pesterlogs that make up one converaation . come on man
i was definitely being a little generalized with the whole ' you can ALWAYS tell super easy ' thing which i will admit i tend to do but really people who are weird about gamzee and dont care about tavros are just . very prominent in the fandom and there is an upsetting trend od how they porteay gamtav and how it spreads as if any of it is supported by canon .
theres not really a point to this i just really adore tavros shes my favourite ever and has been since her first pesterlog with dave ans it pisses me off to see how the fandom reduces her down to a horribly mischaracterized ship that is admittedly a huge comfort to me !! its upsetting !!

viren is my fav BECAUSE of the terrible horrible bad decisions he makes like sometimes when everyone is telling you to calm the fuck down it might be a good ideia to stop and listen idk
love to see your posts on my dash, reminds me that I'm not crazy cause like, there's people out there genuinely saying Viren Never Did Anything Wrong??? and missing like the glorious irony that is how in his effort to help humanity he killed and/or maimed its leaders, led 4 of 5 of their armies into Xadia WITHOUT A PLAN and then let the shady motherfucker he met 3 days ago turn all soldiers into brainless lava monsters like my man, my good sir, you wanted to help so bad, but the damage you caused was probably the worst thing that happened to humankind since what, the mage wars?
everyday eating sand over the fact you could make the tag Viren Tries His Best (it's really the worst for everyone involved) and it's the most canon thing one could say about him :)
Hi anon! Yeah I feel like. I keep seeing rly Extreme views of Viren when even though he is a villain, there's nuance there and a lot of people find him sympathetic, yet he is still a Villain. He planned a coup and tried to get the rightful heirs to the throne killed aka his best friend's children. I sfysuegfkwgfkugwefy
He's a great example of everyone thinking they're the hero of their own story. I think the novels especially let people see/confirm what's going on inside his mind. I don't agree with him on many things, but I understand how he got where he did and that's what makes him compelling to me. The way someone both so driven by a personal sense of justice and who has a calculating nature can still make so many mistakes is really interesting.
When Zubeia talks about Aaravos preying on human mages, "...people who had strong minds, and strong hearts, but who had an insatiable thirst, and fascination with magic" the camera panned to Callum but that was also word for word about Viren. Callum and Viren are so similar and the lines drawn between the positions they have had as high mage and as brother either literally or "like" a brother to their king is setting them up to have an even more prominent foil as the show goes on.
So I often find myself torn between the "Viren is an unsympathetic demon who also hates his family" crowd vs the "Viren should have been the show's protag and he's a better man than Harrow and the show has just done him Dirty by portraying his actions as wrong" crowd because I don't think either is correct LMAO.
Viren gets a full heroic cycle and he is a compelling character but like sergbeylgrfyeh it's fine to not have binary opinions, it's what the show is going for, I believe, to have things be complicated/hard to swallow given all of the trolley problems TDP poses, and it's not smth I see a lot of good faith engagement abt in general.
Like I think it's fine to not like Viren, but ppl don't have to throw canon out the window/make him worse to justify it. Feelings about fictional characters don't have to be justified or morally "correct" and idk, it's probably not specifically tdp as much as that is a Fandom struggle at large

Something that actually keeps me up sometimes is the fact that I sometimes see myself as still sometimes "emotionally immature." When I used to be younger, I used to deny when I was letting my emotions get the better of me, especially among a fandom representative of what I used to love the most, but then I think about that I've now emotionally matured enough that I would want to be among the past circles.
However, the way I see it now, the fandoms and the various subcommunities around this one particular interest have developed more into their own cliques. I now have accepted myself as a furry, but it's also become one of those ironic developments because of the fact that I myself only wanted to be an expressingly loving fan of this one thing that I used to love as much as I took things far for what I believed it stood for.
Other fans, both used to be and current, have either become or probably would become a general (or "ish") furry with regards to the circumstances surrounding my former favorite fandom, too. Weirdly enough though, I eventually had to be tipped with advice that even furries have a prominent presence of cliques in some signature way that seems to be different than probably even the types of cliques that come from straight up non-furs and straight up...well...
I would want to think it's a detriment to overarching society when there is a presence of cliques and circles that have either become or actually already have been since early on just more closed than they try to convince out loud that they are
.
.
That said
Yes, I understand we have our bitch ass world issues now. I understand that there has been many that persists today that started from when before I was freaking born.
We have many problems in our world today that are literally just coming to head because of how much we didn't know that it was going to fuck us over in the long run. Myself, personally, now I'm kind of wishing that I could have given a bit more of a shit about trying to be a politician instead, but given the way I see myself, I could have brought myself to a position that I would have had to bow my ass down to a dumbass who "inspired" a big reason Mike pence ended up writing his so help me God book.
Still though, before the fandom I used to most love developed its own cliques too deeply, there was also even a time that I did have a discussion about whether or not a friend I used to have would rather have their innocence back. They ended off with a no, but I am wanting to believe that some part of them at least emotionally wants some part of it back. At least regarding the emotions and confidence levels goes, I would have fucking love that back more than the lack of knowing how fucked up our world is
We have plenty of years left to go before it implodes, after all. We should all enjoy it while we can

Accidentally put this in the main fandom tag and having been a member of the R/WBY fandom since its inception I know better than to do that.
This is exactly the same thing going on with Cinder in V1-3 (there's much less of it in later volumes) as her femme fatale thing which I think really gets explained as an imitation of her masters and attempt to exert soft power, which is something I conceptually enjoy, because there is that real hidden depth to her character most prominent by the end of V3.
But it absolutely does smack of somebody who has never been tenderly touched in her entire life. This is especially apparent in the fact that there's a constant tension with Cinder between farce/reality, grounded right down in her awful Dark Curse (what she thinks it must be/what it actually is) and the fact she never lets anybody touch her onscreen without recourse or rejection.
Obviously the gender here thing is really not so much of the Dark Fuck Prince fare you'll find in romance geared towards straight women but the femme fatale found in noir and beyond which is grounded in the myth of the seductress - women who use their feminine wiles to ensnare and mislead men. It's not something which promises redemptive/mutual romance by any means and usually leaves her as a vacuum of spirit. It's not how women choose to sexually engage men but how they are mythically constructed to do so.
Hence this whole thing being rather ironic.
There's this unintentional effect in trying to write a seductive/sexy character where it's very clear that 'ideas about how sex is supposed to function' runs wildly separate to 'how sex actually functions' - I shan't cast aspersions on any inclinations on part of the author, especially as it's as easily implicated in simply bad romance tropes - to the point that the character trying to be seductive must absolutely be a virgin overcompensating. There's no other reading possible.
This is my take on Morgan and I am not actually going to assume there is meant to be depth there (as I think Farah mentions Morgan's previous conquests).

I have a question for you! I hope it's not disrespectful. I'm asking because I geniuenly want to educate myself. I noticed you mentioned a few times that you are against m/m fetishization. But I have seen you enjoying and sharing m/m content created by women (and probably with other women in mind). Could I ask what for you counts as a fetishization? What is okay and what is not? Is it okay for women to create and enjoy m/m content or is it taking away creative space from actual gay/bi/pan men?
okay first things first, thank you for sending me a reminder to answer this! i didn’t entirely forget? i’ve just been hella distracted by things recently, so THANK YOU for bringing it to my attention again dear anon <3
okay without further ado!
firstly i would like to stress, there is NOTHING wrong with women creating and enjoying mlm content. honestly, there are very few men i’ve actually seen within fandom, so most of the content i do consume, and many other people consume, is made by women. and honestly? a whole lotta the time, it’s solid content. it’s respectful content. it’s content that i am really thankful for existing, cos i know damn well i couldn’t produce content as good as that.
unfortunately, bad content does exist. and even more unfortunately, it’s utterly RIFE within fandom, because fandom IS so heavily female dominated (again, that’s not necessarily a bad thing!) it’s just that because of this female majority, who enjoy this sort of content. it’s kinda like. just ignored when people DO point out it’s problematic? tbh this is the same for ANY minority within fandom. the majority is just.. mostly ignorant? or just. doesn’t give a shit bc as far as they’re aware, they enjoy that content and other people enjoy that content. what does it matter that their content is offensive to one small minority?
for me. one of the BIGGEST signs of mlm fetishist content, is. when a character. is pretty much turned into a fucking OC, simply to fulfil the mlm “stereotypes” that a lot of people just. seem to assume is normal in a mlm relationship? yknow stereotypes such as top/dom or bottom/sub are the same thing. the bottom/sub is automatically feminine and helpless and uwu soft baby. which. is not a thing??? it’s REALLY not a thing???
sure. stereotypical gay men do exist. but. like. that’s not at ALL accurate to how actual mlm relationships are???
so yeah. first point i guess. if it’s stereotypical to the point where characters are just. out of character. it’s fetishist.
second point? shipping two men. with no prior interaction. or even fuckin’ personalities. literally. just because they are two attractive men. and yes. i’m using reed900 as an example here. there is NO FUCKING EXCUSE when it comes to ships like this. there is NO REASON to ship them, other than the fact that they’re “uwu attractive gay men”. they have no dynamic. they have no developed personalities. they EXIST because people fetishized them.
like. i understand crack ships. i understand speculating a ship between two characters with like. no interactions cos you think their personalities would be compatible.
but when they DO NOT HAVE A FUCKING PERSONALITY, that is fetishization. and honestly, in my opinion. that automatically makes anyone who ships something like that, a fetishist. if you ship men together because they’re men, with no other reason than that. it’s fetishism. and it’s fucking hurtful to ACTUAL mlm. we are not a kink. we are not a guilty pleasure. we are people. and yes, this is all fiction, but it’s still things people consume?? it’s still stuff that.. people just assume are normal bc it’s everywhere???
some smaller, but other points i’d like to make. is. omegaverse. and mpreg. which are just as fuckin’. fetishizing of mlm as they come honestly. like. i am telling you. no actual fuckin’ mlm enjoys that sort of content. i’m into fuckin’ bdsm and general dom/sub dynamics but i am not into that content. because it’s fucking fetishist. like. it just enforces stereotypes. i don’t see this content as often, and enjoy it if you want to. it’s just. a big fuckin’ squick imo MSDLKFJSD
these, for me. are probably like. the biggest red flags that content is mlm fetishist. that i can think of in this current moment at least? i’m sorry this response is so bloody long, and i hope it’s been helpful! but in short. it is totally fine for women to both create, and enjoy mlm content! just. keep it respectful, please ;w;
#ask#jump speaks#long post#mlm fetishization#anti reed900#anti mlm fetishization#again thank you for sending this ask in!#and i hope it's helpful ;w;#and i'm sorry it's a feckin' essay sdmfsdlfksd#i just. do not like having my sexuality treated like a kink yknow?#especially since its so fucking PROMINENT in fandom#*lookingatyoureed900shippers*#these are MY opinions#so y'all are cool to have your own or disagree on certain points!#just like. try not to start any discourse#cos#i am done with that shit at this point MDSLFKJDS#please just. be respectful to men in fandom#especially mlm#cos fetishization IS harmful#and is the reason why i'm just highkey done with the dbh fandom at this point#i'm not a kink#i'm a queer enby guy and i do not appreciate seeing that shit everywhere MSDLFKDJS#okay enough tag talking now#i got.. carried away#Anonymous

Part 2 Part 3
Rating: 18+ (No minors); explicit
Wordcount: 1.6k
Warnings: Rick Sanchez x F!Reader, angst, implied age gap, unprotected sex, daddy kink
A/N: Hello I’m back from the dead, I know I’ve been lacking on both fandoms but my hyperfixations have died. In honor of season 5 here’s a new little mini-series I’m challenging myself to this summer! This takes place in between episodes 2 and 3!
The summer heat was humid and sticky as Rick finished his latest project. The sweltering seemed to permeate the garage just the same with the door opened or closed, and with Beth and Jerry’s latest fight reaching its peak, he decided hiding away was his best bet.
Rick and the heat did not get along well, something that translated to the rest of the family, it felt as though he was fending off Summer and Morty with a stick. Their boredom was not his problem though, he had much better things to do. The thought of slipping away had plagued his mind for the last few hours, but the fever of the summer seemed to make his mind feel like syrup.
“What I wouldn’t fucking give for a pool right now?” Rick murmured to himself, his brow furrowing at the reminder of his own sticky misery. The sky bathed the house in a silky red with the sun slipping down under the horizon. He took another sip from his flask, turning to lean on the workbench.
He heaved a deep sigh as his phone caught the corner of his eye, you were ignoring him, and in true Rick fashion he had taken that in stride. His eyes narrowed unconsciously as he thought about it, his empty hand tightening into a fist. He didn’t fucking need you.
He didn’t need anybody.
Beth’s shrill voice cut through the air followed by some thuds and an “Ow!” from Jerry. That earned an eye roll from Rick and while he wouldn’t mind going in there and tearing them a new one, it was too much work. Morty was breathing down his neck about letting them be, that they were happy. He had scoffed when Morty said that, it was bullshit and he wouldn’t be surprised if someone wanted another divorce in the next 6 months.
Nonetheless, he was stuck in this stuffy house with his family’s bullshit to avoid your bullshit and he was starting to feel suffocated. Why did he give a shit if you were mad, fuck if you wanted to play that game so would he. Maybe it was the liquor he had just downed but it really didn't take much to get Rick riled up. And you knew that.
He could feel the anger blooming in his chest, he wasn’t some fucking teenager in a petty fight with some dumb, little girlfriend. Suddenly he was hot with anger and before he knew it, a portal was in the center of the floor and he was walking through. Damned be his new fibermesh epidermis defense, and fuck his family, always asking him for shit.
One foot through he stopped and thought of you briefly softening, he had been pretty rough on you lately. You called, he declined. You showed up, he went out the nearest portal. He had really only been around lately to take care of his own needs.
A particularly loud curse from inside the house brought him right back to his original train of thought, he was the smartest man in the universe, he didn’t need to take crap from you. You should be thanking him for his presence in your life.
“You have some fucking nerve.”
You shrieked as Rick pulled back the shower curtain. A cold shower was one of the better ways to fend off the heat with the air conditioner broken, especially since Rick had moaned, groaned, and wormed his way out of fixing it.
“What the fuck are you doing?” You hissed as he climbed in fully clothed, his brow in a prominent V-shape, lids half mast. It would have been comical in any other situation, his lanky body struggling to fit in your small shower, an almost bored expression on his face as the water drenched his clothes.
“Me?” Rick scoffed, and narrowed his eyes at you. He began to lose his composure a bit, having your wet naked body in front of him.
“Yes, you. You can’t just barge in here unannounced anymore Rick. I’m not some toy you can pick up when you’re bored and throw it away when you’re not.”
He feigned a hurt look, shrugged the now soaked coat from his shoulders. “I have enough toys, sweetheart, if you were one you’d know.”
That earned a huff from you, it had been a long day and the last thing you needed was Rick’s bullshit. Turning back to face the water, you rinsed the rest of the soap off of you, jumping slightly as his arms snaked their way around your waist.
“C’mon,” he murmured, pressing kisses to your shoulder, you could feel the hard press of cold denim against your ass as he ground into you, “you know you can’t refuse my huge dynamite penis.”
That earned a snort from you, the hard shell of anger cracking slightly. “You’re not off that easy, Rick. You’ve been a huge asshole lately, even more than usual.”
His hands came up to massage your breasts, the feeling amplified by the cold water. You let out a low moan as he latched his mouth to the sweet spot on your neck while one hand tweaked your nipple, and the other snuck its way down to stroke your fluttering core.
“S-shit baby you can’t still —is this all for me?” You could feel his wolfish grin against the back of your neck, and in return you arched your back more to grind against his erection. His long fingers trace through your folds as he removes his other hand to undo his belt, you feel the tight heat in your lower belly as you gush around his fingers.
“Fuck,” Rick murmurs, stopping his motions momentarily to land a hard smack on your ass. You bite back a whine, wanting to maintain some semblance of composure, despite him being knuckle-deep in you. His fingers suddenly press against something deep and spongy within you, your knees buckle as you lurch forward, the unexpected waves of pleasure shivers down your body. Rick lets out another curse, his arm darting out to grip your waist, surely you would’ve fallen face-first into the wall had he not been holding you up.
He inhales sharply as you clench around his fingers, whispering good girl into your neck as you ride it out. He eases out of you, your juices dripping down your thighs, the feeling coupled with the uncomfortable chill of the water makes you shudder.
“You’re a dirty little slut,” you tense again as he aligns himself to your entrance, still a little sensitive from your release, “beg me baby, I-I want to hear you.”
You mewl as he pushes into you, the stretch rides the line of pleasure and pain, Rick barely gives you enough time to get used to it before he bucks his hips and grips your jaw as a warning, “Beg.”
“Please, Rick, I want — I want you to fuck me,” your voice comes out whiny making you wince a bit, but it seems to please Rick as he sets a deep pace, biting into your neck hard enough it's sure to leave a mark.
You can’t help but arch your back even further, this seems to please him as he releases his bite on your neck, “Someone’s eager, y-you can’t seem to get enough of my dick can you?” You moan in response, snaking a hand down to rub the tender bundle of nerves.
You clench at the contact, leading Rick to fasten his pace, his hand moving to tighten around your neck.
“You’re my — you’re daddy’s good girl aren’t you? Can’t get enough of m-my monster cock, you wanna come don’t you? Don’t fucking dare, not until I say so.”
All you can manage is incoherent moans with the occasional Rick! thrown in, you’re too cockdumb to be embarrassed or angry anymore. Rick has his way of getting out of trouble, especially with you.
His brutal pace coupled with your own fingers becomes too much for you as you near your second orgasm, Rick seemed to egg you on as his own fingers replaced yours, you could feel your stomach tightening as your release began to stir in the peak of your stomach.
“Come on my dick, baby, let the neighbors hear you scream my name.”
The pleasure washes over you in waves, your pussy clenching hard around his dick, he thrusts with wild abandon chasing his own release. You can feel him rut against your sensitive walls, riding your post-orgasmic haze. He spills inside you a few moments later letting out a string of expletives in true Rick fashion. You feel yourself stir again slightly as you feel him fill you up, but Rick extracts himself from you gracelessly.
Coming back to your senses you rinse the mixture of juices off your legs, much to Rick’s distaste, and turn off the water. You shiver from being drenched for so long, side-eyeing Rick as he avoids your gaze.
“You’re dripping on my floor,” you murmur, he stands there uncomfortably, it's not lost on you that his portal gun has returned to his hand.
“Well, I-I should go.”
“Typical.”
Rick can feel the anger simmer low in his belly at your dig, “What do you mean typical?”
“Well let’s see Rick, you show up angry and unannounced, seduce me in my show—” “I didn’t seduce you! And —and frankly, I resent the accusation!” “And now you’re leaving with no explanation. This isn’t sustainable long term, Rick.”
“And what makes you think I want to be here long term,” He regrets the words as soon as they leave his mouth, a hurt look flashes across your face before it's replaced with anger.
“Come on, baby, I-I didn’t mean it.”
He reaches out for you and you jerk backwards, “Your family may have taken you back, but I’m not this time Rick.”
He opens his mouth, but you cut him off, “Just go, it’s what you’re best at.”
Rage blinds him as he shoots a portal to the floor, “Don’t — I’m not coming back this time.”
“I know you're not.” And with that he’s gone.

Even though Phil says he's not that good at roleplaying I will actually disagree, heavily.
For starters what he described as "just a few pointers and the goal for the conversation" is literally the definition of improv: you have a goal, you have the situation, now go. And I think the full heavy scripted lore is kind of affecting the expectation, for lack of a better word, of what it should be. So in reality? Phil is doing it perfectly, the same way it was done, well, in the good old days.
The other thing I wanted to mention is about the way he roleplays? Legitimately, after being in the fandom for a while, Phil is for sure on my list of favourites, especially with how he deals with conversations and people. Every one on one conversation he has, either it's planned to happen, or happens naturally its always so so fucking good. It's raw and it's natural and it's both calming and nice and comforting but sad and real and heavy and emotional at the same time. There is just this "way" he speaks when he does it as well, it's like this encompassing sense of inevitability of the world and problems coming to be but it's also this immense comfort in, weirdly, acceptance? of it all? (this just might be my personal feeling but if y'all have that similar "vibe" you slip into when listening to him have regular but heavier dialogues? I don't think I'm alone in this tbh)
The most prominent ones for me were: the small Ghostbur conversation, with their just discussing things, calmly, comfortably, Ghostbur playing it up more than it actually was with the raindrops, just to get Phil to react, it was all just so.. weird comfort in the regularity of it all, despite the weight of the events around them;
His small natural conversations with Ranboo, from just small interventions in each other's day to day and care for the small issues, to more emotional discussions of guilt over the death of Wil and just the more calm approach to heavier topics; then switching, naturally, to lighter goings about, jokes, random occurrences and just mundane tasks;
Then daunting, emotional talks like with Wilbur, right at the start (or, well, the end), and with Fundy today; it's heavy.. of course it is, and even though he sticks to his character's behavior and approach to these kind of things, he still cares, in his own way; but even then, I love how despite the severity of the discussion, the sudden jokes or more lighter comments seem so so natural, instead of out of nowhere, interrupting...
Another small thing I wanna mention is the laughter. Like, it should, technically, feel interruptive? and out of character or conversation? Phil even mentioned he does it often and feels like it doesn't suit what's actually happening, but it's really really not. I honestly love that, despite the situation, good, bad, heavy, mundane, sad, or anything, he still incorporates that small laughter into the conversations, even if unintentionally. That also tips us off to his feelings about all of it, since he's been alive for so so many years that he can let out a laugh despite how fucked the world around is, or how bad he feels or should feel about something. So essentially, like the majority of the best bits that got incorporated into actual story, it's unintentional and seemingly unfit, but works really well.
Tldr: for all of my Phil enjoyers out there, (that better be everybody lol) what he described as more "unprepared" and unscripted rp is literally what improv is: a situation/conversation and a goal you have to achieve during that. Perfect for a lot of the dialogue on the smp. The way Phil approaches the conversations and speaks as well gives me a very specific vibe of weird comfort and the acceptance of the inevitability of devastating things happening or like, keeping a semi calm demeanor in spite of the topic. ( might be a very specific me thing so if anyone else gets similar vibes from those small 1 on 1 convos let me know)
Even shorter Tldr: Phil said he's not great at lore, I disagree heavily. Phil very pog actually. Vibes complicated and might be only me specific but really good. Unintentional character traits turned impactful my beloved. Yeah.
#I made a similar smaller rant after the Ranboo conversation like a bit ago#but yeah#where my Phil enjoyers at#improved lore with a plot outline pog#this is such a rant but thoughts have yo go somewhere so#<3#anyway#dream smp#philza#ranboo#ghostbur#fundy#but today was ouch#like#L'pain#oh boy#long boi rant but ye

but I just feel too tired to be fighting
this is a follow-up post to what I said in my recap the other day about this arc being the Deku Angst arc, as opposed to the Villain Hunt arc or the Deku SIXQUIRKS Exhibition arc. I feel like the fandom discussion tends to focus on the flashier parts of the chapters -- the sexy villains and the new quirk reveals and the Shindous -- each week, and so the quieter emotional beats sometimes get overlooked, especially since the character arc here is playing out in little bits and pieces over time rather than all at once.
this has always been a very reactionary fandom, and there’s a tendency to judge the chapters week to week without ever going back to look at how they all fit into the big picture. so I figured I would try to attempt that, and basically go chapter by chapter here to look at what exactly Horikoshi is setting up and how it all fits together.
so let’s start with the end of chapter 306, which is when the arc officially kicks off. specifically with the very last page:
this is imo one of the best pages Horikoshi has ever drawn. I got the sense that this was a scene he’d had in his mind’s eye for quite a long time, and that he was excited to finally get to this part of the story. it’s extremely effective as both a chapter-ender, and an arc-opener. like, look at this:
it establishes the initial premise of the new arc -- the world is in chaos, and Deku is now seemingly on his own
it leaves the readers with a number of questions. why did Deku leave U.A.?? is he really on his own now?? why does he look so beat-up and exhausted?? what is he up to?? what is the world like now that all these villains have been unleashed and the heroes have been decimated?? and most importantly of all, what the fuck is going to happen next??
it pays homage to some of Horikoshi’s comic book influences -- Batman in particular
it dramatically hits us with that “THE FINAL ACT BEGINS” and lets us know that shit is getting real now
that’s some good shit. so much so that I think people tended to overlook the other notable thing about this page amidst all of the initial excitement and discussion and speculation about where the series was headed. and that is the fact that the final panel in this chapter is NOT the panel of Deku standing above the city. the very last panel, the one that this chapter actually ends on, is instead the close-up of Deku’s face. his face, which is covered in shadow; and his eyes, which have dark circles under them and are prominently missing the usual flecks of light that give him his signature “sunny optimistic shounen protagonist” look.
not to mention this last line here, which is a call back to the very first time we saw the 14-year-old Deku way back in chapter one.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Horikoshi chose to throw this reference in. nor is it a coincidence that THIS is the scene he actually chose to end the chapter on. what this does is show us the drastic shift in Deku’s emotional state of mind, and his attitude towards being a hero. he’s gone from being thrilled and excited to being jaded and exhausted. he’s matured, but at a great cost. it’s always been his dream to be a hero, but “be careful what you wish for” is a popular adage for a reason. and right now he looks the furthest thing from happy.
and this is the emotional beat that Horikoshi chooses to end the chapter on. this is the panel that closes out the War arc, and begins the final act. to me the message could not be clearer -- this arc will be about the exploration of Deku’s character, and his struggle as he tries to live up to the expectations that have been placed on him as the Last Holder of OFA and quite possibly the World’s Only Hope.
it’s a character arc that builds on a lot of the things we’ve already learned about Deku over the course of the series, such as the fact that he is reckless, and that he focuses on others often at the expense of himself. but more importantly, it’s an arc that finally expands on the dark side of what has up until now been a net positive for Deku -- the power of OFA. up until this point, despite its ups and downs, it’s been a boon for Deku overall and has allowed him to pursue his dream. but now we’re finally reaching the point where the monkey’s paw part of the OFA blessing/curse finally starts to come into play. OFA gives Deku more power than he could have ever dreamed of, but it also comes with a built-in destiny that he can’t opt out of whether he likes it or not. AFO is on the loose and out there trying to destroy the world. and now everyone has pinned their hopes on this sixteen-year-old kid, and the question of whether or not the sixteen-year-old kid is ready is apparently not one that anyone feels inclined to ask (possibly because they’re afraid that the answer might be “no”).
he doesn’t have a choice in the matter. he has to do it, because there’s no one else who can. that’s the kind of pressure that is on Deku now.
and on that note, we begin the Deku Angst arc.
chapter 307
this in hindsight was mostly just a set-up chapter to better establish the current state of the BnHA world at large (spoilers: it’s not good), while also providing an answer for one of the big initial questions of the arc -- namely, “what happened to all of those villains that AFO released from Tartarus?” these are important things to touch on, but the pacing could definitely have been better, and the bulk of the chapter was dedicated to providing fanservice to all of the Shindou fans who spammed the most recent popularity poll (which, whatever lol). anyway, so this was the sole chapter thus far with absolutely no Deku development. thankfully the arc picks up from there.
chapter 308
on to the next one! this was the one and only chapter thus far which I think actually qualifies as an “exhibition fight.” this was definitely all about showing off Deku’s current powerset, as well as introducing us to another of the SIXQUIRKS. however, there was Deku development here as well, most notably in this scene:
this is the scene that got a lot of people speculating that this arc was going to focus on Deku hunting down all of the old villains. but I think people got so caught up in that speculation that they overlooked what this scene tells us about Deku’s mindset. and yes, there is new information being revealed here, and it’s not just a rehash of the stuff we already knew. like yes, we know that Deku was shaken up by the recent encounters with Dabi and Tomura, and we know that made him start questioning why villains become villains in the first place, and all that good stuff, and that’s great. however, there are two additional important things that this scene helps establish for us.
the upcoming battle with TomurAFO is weighing heavily on Deku’s mind. this is something that will become a recurring theme in this arc. Deku is thinking about this constantly. the question of what to do when he finally encounters TomurAFO again is knocking incessantly at the back of his mind, and this won’t be the last time it comes up.
Deku is using these villain encounters as test runs. can Tomura be redeemed?? is he just being stupid and naïve?? or is this really something worth attempting?? the interesting thing about this is that Deku’s resolve to save people is usually so strong and unwavering that it’s more than enough to overcome any doubts that he might have. but this time it seems like the repeated objections posed by the Vestiges and Gran Torino have really gotten to him. it’s possible I’m just reading way too much into things, but to me it really feels like Deku’s recent attempts at Talk no Jutsu were meant to do more than just show his growing awareness that the line between heroes and villains is thinner than he once imagined. they’re also serving as trial runs for the real test, when it finally comes. if he can “save” even a villain like Muscular, there’s hope for him being able to save Tomura as well. and so that moment when Muscular rejects him out of hand is all the more disappointing to him, even if it wasn’t really unexpected. basically it wasn’t the answer that he had been hoping for.
aside from those little notes though, like I said, this was unquestionably an exhibition fight first and foremost. which is fine; we needed to establish where Deku is currently in terms of strength, and it was also just fun to see him kick some ass, ngl. in terms of story purpose this chapter was similar to 219, which showed us how Shouto and Katsuki had powered up after getting their provisional licenses. people who don’t care about those characters might argue that these fights weren’t necessary, but as someone who stans all three characters hard, I would disagree! but anyways, moving on.
chapter 309
in contrast to the previous chapter, this chapter focuses more on establishing Deku’s current mental state, as opposed to his physical state. and this is what we learn:
(1) Deku is ~technically~ being shadowed/accompanied by All Might and the Hawksquad (but in practice he’s avoiding them).
(2) it was Deku’s own decision to leave U.A., and he did it because he didn’t want anyone else getting hurt in order to protect him.
and finally, (3) Deku’s game plan is to stop Tomura and All for One before they reach full power.
this last part is very important, because it means there’s a countdown in effect. as far as Deku is concerned, there’s only a finite amount of time before TomurAFO becomes unstoppable. which means that he’s not only under “gotta get stronger” pressure, but time pressure as well. he doesn’t have the luxury of taking his time and training in safety. he’s being rushed now; this is do-or-die.
this chapter is also the first in this arc in which we get to see Deku’s expressions without the hood covering up his face, and what we see is very telling. as previously stated, the light is gone from Deku’s eyes. he keeps his expressions very neutral, and the only time we even see a hint of a smile is when he hugs his mom in the flashback, and it’s clear from the dialogue (“it’s okay, I’ll come home to you”) that he’s doing it for her sake in order to comfort her.
but aside from that, this is very much not the Deku we’ve grown accustomed to. this is the chapter that really establishes his current mental state imo. above all else, he’s afraid that more people will get hurt because of him, and so he’s distancing himself from everyone around him. and he’s also morbidly preoccupied with the inevitability of having to face TomurAFO again, and soon. the chapter ends on the flashback of Gran giving him his cape, and telling Deku that “killing can be another way to save someone.” there’s a lot on this kid’s mind, to say the least.
chapter 310
this chapter opens with a gang of civilians who are trying to open fire on a nice fox lady whose only crime was walking around in the rain at night. Deku intervenes to save her, and it’s the first time in this arc that we see anything close to the “old” Deku, who just wanted to save people with a smile.
but it’s bittersweet, because all the lady can talk about is how scared she was, and how horrible everything is right now. and so Deku, who feels responsible in a lot of ways for everything that’s happened, just feels that much more pressure to somehow make things right again.
there’s also this extra throwaway line which is especially heartbreaking:
“I can’t afford to be around anyone.” fucking ouch. just reinforcing once more how incredibly isolated Deku is right now -- not by choice, but because he feels like it’s not safe to let anyone else get close to him. and so he’s out here running around this dystopian cityscape in the middle of the night in the pouring rain all on his own, and neglecting himself to the point where All Might practically has to force a bento on him.
but does he complain? of course not. because his focus is never on himself. instead, when he settles down to eat, his thoughts immediately drift back to, guess who...
it’s that time pressure once again. “unless I draw out One for All’s full power, I can’t stop any of this.” it’s just nonstop, I have to get stronger, I’m running out of time, I have to do better, and constantly thinking about that inevitable confrontation.
Deku is a thinker, you guys. and when left to his own devices he will overthink, every time. his mind will run in endless loops while he mentally works his way through all of the possibilities. and that’s one of his greatest strengths, don’t get me wrong, but at a time like this it’s also one of his greatest weaknesses. it’s just so fucking easy for him to get stuck in his own head, in his endless rambling thoughts and analyses. and without anyone else there to help distract him, or help him focus, he’s become fixated on his mission, and it’s slowly consuming him.
this, incidentally, is also the chapter in which we finally see Two and Three’s faces, and learn why Two in particular is so reluctant to lend his power to Deku. he appears to be the lone holdout at this point, so stay tuned on that, because I don’t doubt this will wind up being crucial to Deku’s future development, however it winds up playing out.
chapter 311
this chapter flips back to the Hawksquad for the first half, so we get a brief respite from the ongoing Dekuangst. right before we switch back though, we do get confirmation of something we had pretty much already guessed:
like, that much was already apparent based on what we’d seen (the bags under his eyes; the fact that he refused to sit still in any one place for very long even at night), but it’s always nice to get the official confirmation so that people can’t dispute it lol. so yeah, Deku isn’t sleeping much. and not eating much either, if all he’s getting is the occasional bento from Dadmight. so basically not taking care of himself at all, huge shocker there. but this is something that’s important enough to the story that Horikoshi took the time to point it out in the dialogue, in addition to all of the visual clues we’d already gotten.
and just in case we needed to drive that point in any further, this chapter ends with the appearance of Lady Nagant! like yeah, no shit Deku isn’t getting much sleep, what with him having to fend off racist civilians and hired assassins every five fucking minutes. smdh. can he live??
chapter 312
so this is the chapter that properly introduces Lady Nagant, who maaaay or may not be one of the primary antagonists of this arc?? like, it’s really unclear right now tbh, but she gets hyped up by Hawks and AFO, and has a flashback and a mysterious past and a weird trump card (where did you go, Overhaul) and all that good shit, so yeah? one can hope at any rate.
but anyway. so to his credit, Deku’s first thought is to retreat, but he quickly abandons that plan once he figures out Nagant’s location. this is played off like a logical strategic decision at first, but the subsequent chapter quickly makes it clear that Deku’s decision to take the fight to Nagant is less rational than he might have you think.
chapter 313
so yeah. last but not least, the most recent chapter, in which Deku’s real reason for targeting Lady soon becomes apparent:
what’s more, it quickly becomes clear that he miscalculated and probably would have been better off following Hawks’s advice, seeing as he promptly gets himself shot, and subsequently realizes that AFO gave Nagant an extra quirk, something he hadn’t taken into account. but instead of cutting his losses and running at this point, he doubles down instead and not only breaks out Smokescreen, but also the Third’s quirk which he has never even used before.
it’s worth noting that both En and the Third start telling him to chill at this point, and warn him that what he’s attempting is too dangerous. but tbh if they were expecting him to listen, they haven’t been reading the same arc I’ve been reading. once again, Horikoshi makes it clear that Deku has one thing and one thing only on his mind right now.
of course. once again it all comes back to this. hunt down AFO. it doesn’t matter that he’s exhausted. it doesn’t matter that he’s just been shot twice. it doesn’t matter that Hawks, despite knowing what Deku was capable of with his OFA abilities, specifically warned him away from this one person only. it doesn’t matter that even the Vestiges are trying to tell him you’re going too fast and you’re trying to do too much and it’s too dangerous.
he just doesn’t care. long story short, the only thing that matters to Deku right now is tracking down and defeating TomurAFO. and as the person who knows him best once so aptly put it, “he doesn’t take himself into account.” and therein lies the major challenge of this arc.
and so this is where we’re currently at now. and this has been a very long post, but if nothing else, I hope I was able to get this one point across: there is absolutely no way that Deku will be able to defeat TomurAFO as he is now. not a chance in hell. somehow he’s managed the uncommon feat of waging a war of attrition against himself, which is really quite an accomplishment. he’s not taking care of himself, and he’s refusing to listen to sound advice from the people surrounding him, and is trying to skip ahead to the final boss battle before he’s ready, because the guilt and pressure from feeling responsible for the current situation are eating him up. the only way that the world can go back to normal is if he can defeat AFO; therefore he has to do it as soon as possible, because time is running out and everyone is counting on him. this is who Deku is. and this is what inevitably happens when his saving mentality is taken to extremes, and left unchecked.
anyway so to wrap up this post now, I do think this arc is a lot more cohesive than it’s gotten credit for thus far, and Deku is the glue holding it all together. I for one am loving the exploration of his character and all the subtle little angsty touches as we build up to the big moment, whenever it finally comes. just keep in mind though that if his decisions right now seem reckless and short-sighted, it’s because they’re supposed to seem that way, because Deku is not in a good mental state right now. the cracks are finally showing in our perfect protagonist, just like everyone has been wanting this whole time. he is just a kid. he is doing his best. he is trying far too hard to do his best, and it is hurting him so badly, but he doesn’t even realize. this arc is not an endorsement of the Angsty Nomad Hero lifestyle, lol. it’s the exact fucking opposite, and I think it’s being wildly misinterpreted with all of the emphasis on “oh look at that, he mastered another quirk with no effort”, as opposed to “oh look at that, he is shutting down emotionally and is a few more missed nights of sleep away from a complete and total breakdown.”
tl;dr the overarching storyline of this arc is all about Deku slowly falling apart due to his trauma from Jakku, and the subsequent pressure that was put on him by the Vestiges with their whole “GUESS WHAT, YOU’RE THE LAST USER OF OFA, THAT’S RIGHT, IT’S ALL ON YOU BUDDY” pep talk. and mark my words, things are not going to go according to plan. something is going to go terribly wrong here. whether it’s something happening to All Might, or AFO setting up a trap for him, either way Deku is being set up to fail in a major way. unless of course, someone (or a group of someones) manages to intervene first, and possibly stage an intervention or something. it’s what he needs right now, but idk if Horikoshi is going to make it that easy.
anyway, but in other words, the point of this arc is not to show how much stronger Deku has gotten and how he doesn’t even need his friends anymore. it’s the exact opposite -- the point of this arc is to show that Deku needs his friends now more than ever. that in spite of OFA and all of its mystical trappings and fancy SIXQUIRKS, Deku can’t do this alone. he needs his friends. that’s the core message. and right now, we are at the “I can get by on my own” part of the story. and the part we are all waiting for, but which is coming -- I guarantee it is coming, you guys -- is “the thing is, you don’t have to.”
and that shit is going to slap hard you guys. and I for one can’t wait. but until then, enjoy the angst.
