LOTR characters I expected to hate but ended up loving
Merry, I’m sorry he seemed so annoying at the beginning.
Pippin, same reason as Merry.
Legolas, okay I thought he was a tad bratty and a show off.
Eowyn, I was shipping Aragorn and Arwen and she made me angry.
Faramir, I thought he was going to be like Boromir who I personally do not like.

My brainrot today is thinking about just how incredible for a character Eowyn is.
Genuinely. The series might not have many female characters but the ones we do get go so fucking hard.
To me, Eowyn is literally the definition of defining being a woman for oneself. She rejects the roles she is given despite acknlowdging the importance and its mostly because she knows part of the reason is that she is a woman.
The reason why she is obsessed with Aragorn isn't because she loves him but because she wants what he has. She wants the freedom and courage and bravery that Aragorn has at every turn. She literally has multiple conversations during the Two Towers about how what she fears most is a cage. All this girl wants is the freedom to be and not be forced into a role. The best thing is that she literally gets that.
The segment of Return of the King about Eowyn and Faramir is literally about her piecing together what she truly wants. She doesn't want Aragorn. She wants freedom and the ability to choose. Faramir does nothing but encourage that in her. Their love story is literally one of the healthiest love stories I've seen in a long time because at the heart of it, their love is a place to return home to for both parties. Both go off to lead and help their people for a considerable amount of time before returning to each other but that does not diminish their bond. Even Faramir, I believe, falls in love with her bravery and dedication to her loved ones. The reason she went to Pelenor Fields and Gondor with the troops of Rohan was because she had things she wanted to fight for. She wanted to fight for herself, her people, and her loved ones. She is the one who protects Theoden after he is killed so that his body gets the treatment it deserves. She encourages Merry and helps him go to the battle because she sees her struggle in Merry. They feel helpless standing around when there are things to be doing.
Let's also not forget the fact that she was around Grima Wormtounge just as much as the King was. She was exposed to the same poison and awful words that eroded the king. It's even implied that her care for him is part of the reason why Theoden was savable when Gandalf showed up. She had the same power and bravery as everyone else even if she didn't see it in herself.
Then at the end of the day, SHE decides where she wants to go and what path she wants to walk. She walked the path of a warrior. The path of a princess/ruler. The path of a caretaker. But in the end she decides which elements truly mean something to her outside of gender definitions. That is what makes her character so incredible to me. In this she literally kills one of the biggest enemies in that battle with such a badass line.
#i could talk for ages about how i see the struggle of defining being a woman for oneself in her#she rejects the feminine roles given to her but she also doesnt quite want the masculine ones#she just wants the freedom to choose and have the same respect that men are given#she doesnt want to be belitted because she is a woman#thats literally what Faramir gives her and why she stays with him#Faramir loves her for her not anything else#he respects her as she does him#i am someone who is a woman but rejects the definitons of being a woman because they are toxic and caging#all i want is the freedom and respect of being a HUMAN being#i lend more masculine because that is where that freedom is more often but i also see how toxic that relam is too#niether side is good which is why i choose my own path and defintiom#the fact that eowyn gets such a similar story in a series written by a man in the mid 1900s is incredible#i am someone who would love to have more female characters but i do not want them at the expense of them being proper characters and humans#ive read a lot of fantasy women do not always get the agency they deserve#i would rather take fewer well written women then a bunch of poorly written female characters#lotr has that#eowyn arwen and galadriel are all given agency and the space to be their own individuals which makes them incredible characters#thats what i want out of books and ficition#god im making myself insane about my own thoughts lol#i could talk for ages im not kidding#eowyn#eowyn of rohan#lotr#lotr rambling#lord of the rings#the two towers#the return of the king

“War is the province of men, Eowyn.”
“I am no man.”
Eowyn and Eomer at The Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Drew this around mid November 2023 and thought I’d share it just for funsies. Still holds up as my best piece ever.

Defending the castle like a man...
I've just read this article : Defending the castle like a man: on belligerent medieval ladies.
One of my friend is practicing HEMA (historical european martial art) as well as forging. We speak often about it and I have many question, mostly because of my main character in my medieval romance. As in forging, strength is not all in fighting. Know how to do it and practicing is first and foremost (she is smaller and thinner than me. she can wield swords that I cannot lift).
She reads lots of things about medieval warfare and we have discussion about it, and more recently because of my main character in my medieval romance. She had send me this article. And while reading it, I thought about some of my mutuals and the quite recent discussion about Eowyn and Théoden. So this is for you : @torchwood-99 , @from-the-coffee-shop-in-edoras , @konartiste. @errruvande I thought about you as there is a good reference about Alfred's daughter.
Reading this, I thought about Théoden. Rohan seems to have a certain history of female fighters. Shieldmaiden is not a name coming out of nowhere. So... what led Rohan to, seemingly, forget about this role? When did it happen?
In this article, there are a lot of example of women who did fight in war and defend their territory. It seems there are more and more proof of that. Even more, it seems women were actually expected to know at least how to defend their castle and lands. "Do as their husband do". So they had to know how to fight or at least strategies and siege... And some knew how to use bows, crossbows and even swords. Still, they had been, most of the time, erased or played down.
It is not said if this erasing was all along or more recent, as it is noted that those women of war were common up until the 14th centuries. In any case, they existed, but in later ages, it was inconvenient for men to have their female kin show "men's virtue".
Did something equivalent happened in Rohan? Why would something like this would happen? I would be the first to say "Oh it's all Saruman/Grima's fault". But no. Theoden do not think of sending Eowyn to war. He does not even have the reflex to think about her as a leader for his people. if it had been Grima and/or Saruman, he would have think about it.
Could it be his gondorian upbringing? After all he grew up in Gondor, had a gondorian mother? Thengel did not seem to held his countries culture in high regard. So, could it be this? Or even before that?
In my glèomenn fanfic, Tirwald said it was legends and old story. Could it be even older? Something more recent, linked to another culture?
So... What do you think?

After everything, eomer finding eowyn's body on the battlefield will always make me cry. Imagine, when you're 11 years old your father is killed and your mother dies of grief shortly after and there was nothing you could do to save either of them, but you train to fight and protect your younger sister, because you have to at least keep her safe. You warn her of the dangers in the world, you do everything in your power to make sure no harm comes to her. You know that she longs to defend what she loves, to fight just as much as you do. Despite this, you would never be able to stand it if you lost her, too. So you tell her she has to stay behind, you do your best to build a cage around her like a safety net. You believe maybe she will understand, maybe she will stay behind. Maybe she will stay safe. You have done everything you can. You go to battle thinking it will most likely be your last, but at least your sister will be safe. Your uncle, who took you in when your parents died and treated you like a son, dies during this battle. You see his body. You have lost another parent. It is a blow you haven't felt since you were young, despite the battles you've been in since. But then you see a face that is all too familiar, all to similar to your own. Your sister's body, laying defeated next to your uncle's, when she should have been safe in your home. Her body, curled on the ground in a way it should never be. You were making the world safe for her. You see now, though, that it didn't work. She's dead, and you are once again an 11 year old by, who still cannot save those you love.
anyway yeah i'm doing great👍

Eowyn tells Faramir it isn't necessary to write all of Rohan's songs and legends in a book lest they be forgotten. The Rohirrim do not read and write: they are oral storytellers, and they have great respect for their minstrels and their history. They will not forget anything.
She says it to reassure him and save him the trouble, but it does not seem to soothe his mind.
He smiles quickly at her before turning to the window. He looks out at the hills of Emyn Arnen as though watching for a storm on the horizon, and then Eowyn understands.
She grasps his hand.
At his touch, an image rushes through her mind: a grey, mutinous sea; and among the froth and the fury – sodden books, orphaned heirlooms, and a tapestry that will never again be seen or re-made, with both story and skill lost to the devouring waters.
The water washes over them both before slowly receding, leaving only a mist that she blinks away, and the distant glint of the Anduin to the west as it flows down to the Sea.
'Have I ever told you of Eorl the Young?' she says. Her voice is rough; she clears her throat.
'We know much about Eorl in Gondor,' Faramir says softly. 'His friendship with Cirion and his aid in our time of need was great.'
'And what about after?' she asks. 'What does Gondor know about that?'
Faramir turns to her with a wry smile. 'Very little.'
'Would that you had someone to teach you a little history.'
The mirth in Faramir's eyes mirrors her own.
'Would that I did.'

no living man may hinder me: The Gilded Wraith of Numenor
from the Reverse Gondolin AU, based on @who-needs-words's idea for Ar-Pharazon's fate! (they also wrote a ficlet for it, check it out here!)
#silm#silmarillion#lotr#lord of the rings#witch king#witch king of numenor#ar pharazon#eowyn#reverse gondolin au#ooh i need to do this pose for fingolfin and morgoth#the parallels though! eowyn facing pretty much certain death#but being brought back by hope in the Halls#while fingolfin faced morgoth because he lost all hope#also: in the au sauron & pharazon took a bunch of numenorean tech with them before the Downfall#bc nobody attacked valinor so all the airships and engines and stuff were still on the island#so we get Steampunk Tech Numenor#(perfect symbolism w industrialization too!)#which means of course the witch king of numenor gets a Gun Sword#which is frankly terrifying#his face is still visible here bc the tiny bit of maia/peredhel ancestry (still like 20x more than aragorn tho) protects him from the rings#enough that his fea & hroa haven't faded; just been corrupted#also in the au bc of Prince Elrond's involvement in numenorean politics ar pharazon is way more aware of potential loopholes#in the 'no living man' thing#aka arwen and galadriel#and honestly he expected to be slain by arwen#so he still overlooked eowyn (and merry)#just for very different reasons#less hubris in a 'i am invincible' way#and more hubris in a 'you arent nearly important enough to bother paying attention to' way
