The U.S. Is Paying Billions to Russia’s Nuclear Agency. Here’s Why.
Nuclear power companies rely on cheap enriched uranium made in Russia. That geopolitical dilemma is intensifying as climate change underscores the need for emissions-free energy.
By Max Bearak, nytimes.com
The United States’ reliance on nuclear power is primed to grow as the country aims to decrease reliance on fossil fuels. But no American-owned company enriches uranium. The United States once dominated the market, until a swirl of historical factors, including an enriched-uranium-buying deal between Russia and the United States designed to promote Russia’s peaceful nuclear program after the Soviet Union’s collapse, enabled Russia to corner half the global market. The United States ceased enriching uranium entirely.

Watching people play through expert modpacks like Gregtech and Nomifactory is so funny.
The first episode will just be like, "Ok, so the first step is to actually collect 73836 rocks to knap into basic stone "tools" (sharp rocks) so that we can finally obtain the sticks and logs that we need to make actual tools (this part took at least 45 mins). Now with this, we are gaming. Consequently we can now find and use clay to make vessels for melting metal."
Then they embark on an adventure to find somewhere with rhyolite, an extrusive igneous rock that makes up the ground (you can find copper ore there) (getting all the copper took three hours) (all of this information is in the video). By the end of the first episode, they've got maybe an anvil, maybe some tools, and it doesn't seem like they're anywhere close to the industrial revolution.
Fast forward 6 (six) episodes, and they'll be saying shit like, "In order to make the next level of electric furnace, we need Naquadah and Lumium, so we're going to send our tier 5 Microminer into our 5x5 Microverse to reap our bountiful rewards. In the meanwhile, let's hop into the End using the end cake and harvest Krypton from the atmosphere (because that's apparently a thing) to increase the efficiency of our Naquadah furnaces."
But oh no! It turns out, to make the circuitry for this, they need tetrachloropolybutylethanobenzoate (C₆₄₈₅H₁₂₆₆Cl₄) and polybenzimidazole (C₂₀H₁₂N₄) (This one's an actual thing) (obtaining this will make commenters say that you have reached, and I quote, "Stage 2 Greggification"), its process of acquisition being somewhere between TREE(2) and TREE(3) steps long and requiring you to build so much industrial machinery you have to migrate to a space station just to avoid cluttering.
All of that and they'll still be at the Insane or Ludicrous Voltage tier (tier 6 to 7 out of 10)
#this was an excuse to mess around with the color features#fun fact: one of the developers of Nomifactory had to look up how to enrich Uranium for “maximum realism”#←this is not a joke#minecraft#mods#modded minecraft#gregtech

The best thing about having gotten back into really reading this year, I think, is just to have all this information fizzing around in my head and getting to play red string theory with all the books I read at different times and for different reasons that all end up cross-pollinating with each other. Like my brain is still soup in a lot of ways but it's Soup with Ingredients now. stew with enrichment
#sometimes the soup has rly toxic ingredients bc of all the foreign policy and chemical weapons books but oh well#enrichment in the way uranium is enriched. i guess#skravler

My boss, a particle physicist: "Yeah, back during the cold war, Reagan started dismantling some of our warheads because we had this agreement with the USSR that we would. The government subsidized a company in Pennsylvania to turn them into fuel for fusion. Quite a few uranium rods went missing while this was happening. The guy who ran the company happened to be an ex Israeli general. Israel did not have any nuclear production capabilities up until around that time. Even today nobody is quite sure how they got those.."
Me: *Sitting in his office for our 1 on 1 meeting.* Ah. Okay. Um. ... So in a week or so I'm gonna need to use PTO for something.
#he also explained to me the process of enriching uranium#ooc#I don't want to tell him not to tell me these things because I don't want to indicate I have anxiety and I kinda like having this#I probably come across as a big bang fan#yes. you can tell me these things because I have a surface level understanding of them and will forget shortly :)#I will say woah a lot at cool sounding words :)#and little by little I am understanding more about the background world#dude we did horrible things to people during the gulf war

hey girl hows it goinggg :33 what the best rock youve seen in recent times?
My physics teacher just had like. a box of uranium-238 in one of our lessons so that was pretty cool. There was another cool one I found at the beach near my grandparents' house a few weeks back that had like one jagged side and one smooth side. pretty cool

Iran to 'dramatically' increase uranium stockpile sparking nuclear WW3 fears
Iran is slated to “dramatically” increase its stockpile of near weapons-grade uranium, a nuclear watchdog warned Friday. Rafael Grossi, chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said Iran began accelerating its enrichment of uranium to up to 60% purity, which is close to the roughly 90% level considered weapons grade, that day. Grossi told Reuters: “I think it is very concerning.” Grossi’s…

Iran's Enriched Uranium Stockpile Over 32 Times The Limit Set In 2015: UN
Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile was estimated at 6,604.4 kilos as of October 26 (Representational) Vienna: The UN nuclear watchdog on Tuesday said that Iran’s estimated stockpile of enriched uranium had reached more than 32 times the limit set in a 2015 accord between Iran and world powers to limit its nuclear programme.
