I didnt get past gen 1 tho…

I was planning on doing a post about this but figured I could ask you first: on a scale of “can levitate objects and that’s about it” to “is basically a comic book superhero with the extent of their psychic/ghost channeling power”, how would you rate the various Ghost and Psychic type gym leaders/elite 4?

here, i made a little tier list thing lol.

i cheated with a few of these, as not all of them are just psychic or ghost specialists. oops! just there are some characters that felt appropriate to include on this in one way or another

a few thoughts on some of these characters and choices:

opal - not psychic, but also she just strikes me as someone who isnt entirely confined by the rules of the physical world. very much subscribe to the thought that she may or may not be fae.

anabel - i could have sworn she canonically had psychic abilities but i dont see anything about that on her bulbapedia page. unless i didnt look hard enough. did i just make this up? either way, she vibes like someone who has a little something extra going on

ryme and shauntal - i never particularly understood their association with the ghost type so thats why theyre both farther down the list. shauntal especially just strikes me more as someone who just happens to be an avid horror fan but doesnt have much of a connection to the typing beyond that. aside from the whole "ghost writer" pun, anyway.

marley - as ive stated before, i headcanon her wishing desperately that she had supernatural abilities. sucks to suck, girlie : )

undoubtedly ive miscategorized some of these characters but thats simply bc i was unaware of or forgot about canon information. do you have any different opinions for any of these characters?

I feel like Agatha's "Pokemon are for battling" mindset reminds me a bit of how pre-character development Silver was. (Somewhat looking down on those who she feels take a weaker approach to Pokemon too, tho there's that added bitterness with Oak since she knows he's strong but he's passed up pursuing strength in favor of research. She's not as mean as Silver was and can be friendly to the player, but there's still the similarity in their pursuits.)

I kinda wonder what became of her in Gen2/HGSS. It would have been interesting to see them meet.

i see bertha having made more dishware than anything. i do think shes done a fair amount of hand building but i see throwing on a wheel being her thing for some reason. shes made a lot of very very nice cups and dishes and etc.

picture her having a large antique cabinet that she keeps some pieces in, ones with sentimental value or she is exceptionally proud of.

next, picture agatha bustling into her sister's home, its a little bit of an emergency, shes got this little ghost here that needs to be bound to something asap or else it will dissipate because maybe its not very stable on its own.

agatha imo is obviously meant to evoke a witchy old woman in her concept and design, so i like to believe she is adept in some spells, perhaps. its not so far fetched of an idea when you remember there are people with psychic abilities in the pokemon universe.

so perhaps, knowing how to bind spirits to objects, she grabs one of her sister's cups from the display cabinet and quickly does her thing before the little spirit she has grows any more unstable

she doesnt tell bertha, lmao. she sets the cup back in its place and gives it a wink before closing the cabinet door.

at this point, bertha knows that if there is anything supernatural going on in her home, it is very likely her sister who is to blame. agatha receives a phonecall from her sister by the end of the week.
