Daniel Villarreal at LGBTQ Nation:
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case of an Ohio woman who says she faced workplace discrimination over her heterosexual identity. The case may be the first of its kind. It examines the lengths members of “majority groups” must go to prove that they were discriminated against by “minority” groups. Marlean Ames worked for 20 years at the Ohio Department of Youth Services, a state agency that oversees the confinement and rehabilitation of juvenile felony offenders. In 2014, she was promoted to serve as the administrator of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), a 2003 federal law that seeks to track and end sexual assaults in all detainment facilities.
In 2017, a gay woman named Ginine Trim became Ames’ new supervisor. In December 2018, Trim gave Ames a performance evaluation that said Ames mostly “met” all of her job expectations and had an “opportunity to improve” in three areas. Then, in April 2019, Ames applied and interviewed to become the Department’s Bureau Chief of Quality — she didn’t get the job.
One month later, the agency’s Human Resources department called Ames into a meeting where they terminated her role as PREA administrator and demoted her to her former role, reducing her pay from $47.22 an hour to $28.40 an hour, court documents allege. The agency’s director and assistant director who oversaw Ames’ demotion are both heterosexual, and at different times, they provided different reasons for her demotion. Once, they mentioned that her position was an “at-will” role whose work could be terminated at any time; another time, they said that they wanted a worker who would regularly exceed (rather than just “meet”) the job’s expectations. The following December, the department hired Alexander Stojsavljevic, a 25-year-old gay man, for the PREA administrator position and chose Yolanda Frierson, a gay woman, as its Bureau Chief of Quality. Ames filed a discrimination charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and then filed a lawsuit. Both a district court and the 6th U.S. Court of Appeals ruled against Ames.
[...] However, in its summary judgment, the district court said Ames had failed to prove that she was a member of a “protected class” of people who have historically been discriminated against for their personal characteristics. The court also said Ames failed to substantiate “background circumstances” proving that LGBTQ+ people had made the decisions against her or that they had discriminated against other heterosexual workers before in the past.
SCOTUS will hear the Ames v. Ohio Department of Youth Services case this term.
The Ames case highlights Marlean Ames suing over being “discriminated” for being heterosexual (or straight) that led to her demotion from her job.

Okay I need y'all to be a sounding board to tell me if I'm crazy or if this is as diabolical as I think it is. Tonight (after hours) my boss randomly pinged me and told me to drop my job description and four key projects/values I bring to the company ASAP. I'm like okay... and open the doc link... and there are literally other people in the marketing department doing the same thing where we can all see what the other is writing.
No preface for why we were asked to do this and not everyone in the department has been asked to do this.... is this not absolute psychological warfare????????????
#like i'm sorry but in my opinion asking people to do that in groups or where other employees can see what you're doing is actually insane#like okay so are our positions being judged/eliminated or are you restructuring the department now that we got a new CMO???? wtf#also i've only had this job a month and we immediately got a new chief marketing officer and she hates everything we were doing#like idk girl i just got here

My most recent trick for trying to spend less (or, in this case, buy less) is to put like really practical and/or arbitrary rules around things I can't buy in categories I am spending too much on too frequently. For example:
At this point, no buying jewelry whatsoever!!
If the shoes aren't leather, I shan't buy them (I noticed I'm more inclined to wear my leather shoes, so why buy a pair that aren't leather and i'd be less inclined to wear them?). This means I buy like one pair of shoes a year on average now, and each year it has been a different style.
No polyester clothing. This rules out like 70% of the clothing I'd impulse buy without consideration, and it narrows the number of stores I can shop from for clothes to mostly just the discount department store and thrift stores. No acrylic because it fucking feels bad
No makeup unless I'm replacing something from years ago that was like grody to the max or something I've used up. No perfume because I have probably too much.
Does the coat make me feel like a fucking movie star? If not, it does not make it to the checkout with me.
I'm finding this really helps a lot because if I want to impulse buy something I can think, does this follow my rules I made? And if it does I can get it, but then I've pondered it, and often it doesn't and I don't get it. It's really been useful. Because NO i would not actually have a good reason to get that sequin dress I walk past at the mall when I go to one job and NO I would not be able to wear the cute fucking winx club looking blue heeled boots for more than like a half hour at a time and the plastic would probably be fucked in a year so NO they do not come home with me
#rubia speaks#she rambles the financials#like there's a difference between 'i maybe shouldnt buy that but i need a spending thrill' and 'its against my rules so i cant' yknow?#i respect my rules a lot more than i remember to respect my restraint otherwise#if you buy too many clothes just put yourself on a polyester ban and that's like most of the options eliminated right there#makes me feel weird thinking abt how much of the clothing available is plastic#like there's only one non-thrift store where I know i can find wool and linen and that's the discount department with random stock#god it;s just so fucking strange. have you ever took your phone's magnifier and looked real up close at polyester clothing#its so grid-like. it's unnerving. it's plastic.

Walgreens Settles for $106.8 Million Over FCA Violations
On September 13, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. and Walgreen Co. (collectively, Walgreens) agreed to pay $106.8 million to resolve allegations of violating the False Claims Act (FCA) and state statutes. The allegations pertain to billing government health care programs for prescriptions that were never dispensed. The government alleged that from…

The apex predator is not a human.
It's a corporation.
We treat corporations like humans, they are not. We defer to them as people in how they spend their money to pedal influence, except that they are not subject to the law and the way that people are, because corporations can bankroll the law as it applies to them.
There should be no Citizens United. There should Be-no-B(ill)ionaires. There should be no unregulated capitalism, monopoly, class warfare, and wealth stratification that make our nation ill. 100% taxation on every dollar over $999,999,999.

Ask A Genius 993: Project 2025
Rick Rosner: It’s a disaster for America because of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025. Are you aware of Project 2025? Scott Douglas Jacobsen: Yes, I am aware of Project 2025. Rosner: For those who aren’t, it’s a conservative wish list, more than 900 pages long, detailing what they intend to do if Trump becomes president again. Now, they won’t be able to implement all of it, or perhaps even…

Sometimes being environmentally friendly/conscious is out of people's price range.
#Just something to keep in my mind...#we need to fight to hold the biggest polluters accountable: corporations#and maybe stop haranguing poor people who literally don't have that extra dollar to spend on a green-washed product#I wish I could eliminate all of the lawn/grass from my property... but it costs a small fortune to turn disgusting turf into permaculture#but plants seeds beds soil equipment is all so expensive#I got some trees and raspberries from out local department of soil and water conversation's annual sale for much cheaper than any nursery..#my friends bought me a 5 foot spruce tree a couple years ago... it was $500#enough clover seed to cover half an acre costs $60... and it will only really take if I could've afford to have all the grass/lawn removed#wildflower seeds for 100 square feet were $30.#none of this stuff is going to grow if I can't protect it from the overpopulated herds of vermin town deer#fencing is incredibly expensive and literally nothing else works#they ate all the new growth off my Spruce tree the first year and stunted its growth#I have bolts of tulle handed down to me and I've had to wrap my trees for fuck's sake in netting so they don't get destroyed#like okay... I absolutely loathe grass lawns but I understand why people have them#they're impossible to get rid of unless you're incredibly wealthy

The U.S. will use its veto power against a Palestinian bid to be recognized as a member state of the United Nations during a vote at the Security Council expected to take place Thursday evening. Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson for the State Department, described as premature an effort by the Palestinian Authority (PA) to gain member status at the U.N. He said there was not unanimity among the Security Council’s 15 members that the Palestinian Authority had met the criteria for membership, with unresolved questions over the governance of the Gaza Strip, where Israel is in a war to defeat and eliminate the controlling power, Hamas. “And for that reason, the United States is voting no on this proposed Security Council resolution,” Patel said.
Earlier it was revealed that the United States was secretly pressuring other members of the Security Council to shoot down a Palestinian state membership so the US wouldn't have to use its veto as that would lead to a wave of local and international criticism for Joe Biden.

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #26
July 5-12 2024
The IRS announced it had managed to collect $1 billion in back taxes from high-wealth tax cheats. The program focused on persons with more than $1 million in yearly income who owned more than $250,000 in unpaid taxes. Thanks to money in Biden's 2022 Inflation Reduction Act the IRS is able to undertake more enforcement against rich tax cheats after years of Republicans cutting the agency's budget, which they hope to do again if they win power again.
The Biden administration announced a $244 million dollar investment in the federal government’s registered apprenticeship program. This marks the largest investment in the program's history with grants going out to 52 programs in 32 states. The President is focused on getting well paying blue collar opportunities to people and more people are taking part in the apprenticeship program than ever before. Republican pledge to cut it, even as employers struggle to find qualified workers.
The Department of Transportation announced the largest single project in the department's history, $11 billion dollars in grants for the The Hudson River Tunnel. Part of the $66 billion the Biden Administration has invested in our rail system the tunnel, the most complex Infrastructure project in the nation would link New York and New Jersey by rail under the Hudson. Once finished it's believed it'll impact 20% of the American economy by improving and speeding connection throughout the Northeast.
The Department of Energy announced $1.7 billion to save auto worker's jobs and convert factories to electronic vehicles. The Biden administration will used the money to save or reopen factories in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, and Virginia and retool them to make electric cars. The project will save 15,000 skilled union worker jobs, and created 2,900 new high-quality jobs.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development reached a settlement with The Appraisal Foundation over racial discrimination. TAF is the organization responsible for setting standards and qualifications for real estate appraisers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics last year found that TAF was 94.7% White and 0.6% Black, making it the least racially diverse of the 800 occupations surveyed. Black and Latino home owners are far more likely to have their houses under valued than whites. Under the settlement with HUD TAF will have to take serious steps to increase diversity and remove structural barriers to diversity.
The Department of Justice disrupted an effort by the Russian government to influence public opinion through AI bots. The DoJ shut down nearly 1,000 twitter accounts that were linked to a Russian Bot farm. The bots used AI technology to not only generate tweets but also AI image faces for profile pictures. The effort seemed focused on boosting support for Russia's war against Ukraine and spread negative stories/impressions about Ukraine.
The Department of Transportation announces $1.5 billion to help local authorities buy made in America buses. 80% of the funding will go toward zero or low-emission technology, a part of the President's goal of reaching zero emissions by 2050. This is part of the $5 billion the DOT has spent over the last 3 years replacing aging buses with new cleaner technology.
President Biden with Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau and Finnish President Alexander Stubb signed a new agreement on the arctic. The new trilateral agreement between the 3 NATO partners, known as the ICE Pact, will boost production of ice breaking ships, the 3 plan to build as many as 90 between them in the coming years. The alliance hopes to be a counter weight to China's current dominance in the ice breaker market and help western allies respond to Russia's aggressive push into the arctic waters.
The Department of Transportation announced $1.1 billion for greater rail safety. The program seeks to, where ever possible, eliminate rail crossings, thus removing the dangers and inconvenience to communities divided by rail lines. It will also help update and improve safety measures at rail crossings.
The Department of the Interior announced $120 million to help tribal communities prepare for climate disasters. This funding is part of half a billion dollars the Biden administration has spent to help tribes build climate resilience, which itself is part of a $50 billion dollar effort to build climate resilience across the nation. This funding will help support drought measures, wildland fire mitigation, community-driven relocation, managed retreat, protect-in-place efforts, and ocean and coastal management.
The USDA announced $100 million in additional funds to help feed low income kids over the summer. Known as "SUN Bucks" or "Summer EBT" the new Biden program grants the families of kids who qualify for free meals at school $120 dollars pre-child for groceries. This comes on top of the traditional SUN Meals program which offers school meals to qualifying children over the summer, as well as the new under President Biden SUN Meals To-Go program which is now offering delivery of meals to low-income children in rural areas. This grant is meant to help local governments build up the Infrastructure to support and distribute SUN Bucks. If fully implemented SUN Bucks could help 30 million kids, but many Republican governors have refused the funding.
USAID announced its giving $100 million to the UN World Food Program to deliver urgently needed food assistance in Gaza. This will bring the total humanitarian aid given by the US to the Palestinian people since the war started in October 2023 to $774 million, the single largest donor nation. President Biden at his press conference last night said that Israel and Hamas have agreed in principle to a ceasefire deal that will end the war and release the hostages. US negotiators are working to close the final gaps between the two sides and end the war.
The Senate confirmed Nancy Maldonado to serve as a Judge on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Judge Maldonado is the 202nd federal Judge appointed by President Biden to be confirmed. She will the first Latino judge to ever serve on the 7th Circuit which covers Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.
Bonus: At the NATO summit in Washington DC President Biden joined 32 allies in the Ukraine compact. Allies from Japan to Iceland confirmed their support for Ukraine and deepening their commitments to building Ukraine's forces and keeping a free and Democratic Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. World leaders such as British Prime Minster Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, praised President Biden's experience and leadership during the NATO summit

Trump is allegedly putting elon musk in our government. Elon Musk the dogecoin buffoon with the trail of estranged neglected children. The guy who made people build the stupidest most garbage car in the world. The guy who destroyed twitter in a year. And he wants to head what he calls a "Department Of Government Efficiency." Look at what those words spell out and get ready for things to get stupider and shittier than you ever even thought they could. His manbaby meme department by the way has the goal of eliminating more corporate regulations.
