Fantasy races and gender
No more two gender elves and dwarves! Here are some headcannons for them
Disclaimer I am only a cat with a vague understanding of humans so if something is off to you please let me know!
Elves
Have four or more genders depending on which culture group.
The most common genders are linked to the elements because elves are very connected to nature
First gender is linked to fire, while humans think this is the most masculine because these elves are fighters and commanders, they are also known for passionate poetry, wearing their emotions on their sleeves, and being big flirts.
Second gender is linked to air and these elves are known for their intelligence, focusing on knowledge, their connection to their gods, and understanding the world around them.
Third gender is linked to water and these elves are mediators, great with words and persuasion, family focused, and like keeping large books documenting their family history.
The fourth gender is connected to earth, and while these elves are usually seen as more feminine, humans are often shocked by what they do. These elves are the planners for their tribes. They plan buildings, keep track of money, and organize trade.
Elves have a ‘gender reveal’ party for their kids when the kid is around 12 and gets to choose their gender.
Elves are also able to switch between genders whenever they want.
Elves link gender more with societal roles than with sex. So elves can have a variety of masculine or feminine traits within one gender but all use the same pronouns.
Elves have a multitude of pronouns! They have the standard I and you pronouns with a singular and plural they for each gender. They also have pronouns for a group of mixed gender elves that signify which gender is the largest part of the group and if their are multiple or only one of each elf. Humans have charts for figuring out elf gender pronouns and it is very difficult for them to understand.
Elves believe that a child needs a strong parental figure from each gender group to be a successful person so children are raised communally.
Dwarves
Drawers don’t have the concept of gender and use the same pronoun for everyone. They have I, you, them (singular), and them (plural).
Dwarves don’t have a lot of sexual dimorphism so both male, female, and intersex dwarves all have beards, large muscles, and very stout builds.
Dwarves think humans assign too much significance to their genitalia. And they think elves get a little too involved with their gender groups.
Drawces do have many different sex groups which can be seen as genders but have no social, pronoun, or aesthetic signifiers. Intersex is very common for dwarves and they create many terms for the spectrum.
This is a fun dive into how different human-esque groups can have gender and sex ideas that humans don’t have. I encourage anyone writing fantasy with human and non- human characters to explore what gender and sex even are but also not to restrict lgbtq characters just to the non human group!

some thoughts on elves and lactose intolerance:
on the topic of elves being vegan/vegetarian, where would they get eggs? foraging? what about milk.
because they do drink milk!!! they have cheese and milk but they don’t have cows. they don’t rlly farms,,, like i mean the grow food but cows??
because elves CAN eat p much anything and we know they have cheese. where r they getting this cheese??
some potential cheese sources:
aragorn introduced the culture (ha) of cheese.
but then imagine- hey elf dad i got some fermented milk it’s rlly good. like absolutely not would that become widespread accepted and make its way to lorien and mirkwood in a few decades.
they trade??? with humans??? certainly not drawfs. but who are these secret human links to cheese. with hobbits??? i could see bilbo being the elvish cheese supplier.
with gandalf???? is gandalf the cheese wizard? did he try some cheese off in the shire centuries ago and thought- yk what my girl galadriel would love this.
this is mostly likely how cheese was discovered. gandalf just kinda floating through like “you won’t believe what the hobbits just came up with”
but then who brings the cheese to other elves. consistently. like i get a one time thing but that’s a lot of cheese to keep for centuries.
does gandalf have a cheese wagon he brings round elven establishments and gives away wheels on wheels??? does he make them pay. does gandalf even have money or even need it??? (question for another day)
i mean rohan is kinda close to lorien but even then like. lorien is mysterious and gated and no horse girl no matter how cool can pull up and be like “yo elves try this sick brie we just made”
also elves are like capable of making their own cheese i know but that requires milk. and milk doesn’t save like cheese does. also there’s no COWS in lorien,,, where on earth would the put them. in the trees???
so like is the cheese even. cow,, cuz it’s not cow or goat and idk man. sheep?? maybe for clothes,, but where are the tree sheep?? where is the mirkwood sheep?? i can see rivendale with some maybe but???
also how r y gonna convince them in the first place to even TRY it. bc no matter how u pitch it some other creatures lactation is not it.
where is this milk coming from??????? i’m so sorry but i have questions mr tolkien please
also the idea of legolas being lactose intolerant to me is so funny im sorry but like imagine this poor boy goes his whole life without dairy and rocks up to rivendell for the first time, goes to the feast and tries this new fancy treat on crackers and has the shits for weeks
cuz there’s no way cheese is making its way to mirkwood. absolutely not. maybe in like the five army’s war they got SOME but like not enough. also thuranduil would not trust that shit. he’s not eating that and his son certainly isn’t.
but it tastes good with wine…. and that might have been the selling point.
mr tolkien i need awnsers please. tell me about the cheese wizard.

Elven soulmates - Astarion x Elf!Tav - Headcanon
I listened to one song and for some reason it screamed Astarion x Tav at me. This man is really ruining my life 😅
Anyway… the song was ‘IDK you yet’ and I just thought about the two of them being soulmates or something like that and then I found a thread on https://www.enworld.org about elven relationships and someone mentioned soulmates which got me searching and I found this page https://www.realmshelps.net/charbuild/races/elf/leaf.shtml where is mentioned that elves can find someone they call their thiramin which should mean soulmate in elvish language.
Here’s the part from the https://www.realmshelps.net :
Upon reaching adulthood, elves continue their sexual explorations. Eventually, though, each discovers that his heart has developed a capacity for lasting and exclusive love. Like most other important things in their lives, elves describe this in mystical terms. They believe that a person's spiritual progress is unknowingly intertwined with that of another. This soulmate is called a thiramin. Upon meeting his thiramin, an elf's heart fills with passion and certainty. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, the other party is felled by the same feeling of immediate and eternal devotion. (Though rare, an unrequited feeling of thiramin is always disastrous, bringing centuries of wrenching heartbreak. Sufferers often commit suicide or succumb to the temptations of evil.) Elves almost always feel thiramin for people they meet for the first time: In other words, visitors from other communities. Intermarriage between communities strengthens the bonds of communication between settlements, allowing them to quickly band together against the armies of evil that march across the land.
Now… You can imagine what that did to me, when I thought about the idea of Elf Tav knowing Astarion before he was turned into a vampire so… here’s some headcanons. Suffer with me.
Tav and Astarion met in Baldur's gate. Tav being new to the city. Young elf exploring the world outside their home.
Maybe they met in an art gallery or a tavern or some other place… that’s up to you, but when their eyes met, they immediately knew the other one was their thiramin. Heart beating wildly as they smile at each other.
They start dating, of course. Trying to get to know each other and spend as much time together as possible.
I think that Tav would call Astarion their star… or maybe even ‘my starry night’
Astarion would call them ‘my moon’ (idk, I just love the idea of them using moon and stars as pet names)
Or… inspired by Game of Thrones - Astarion would call Tav ‘my sun and stars' while Tav would call him ‘the moon of my life’
Maybe they dated for a year or two, thinking about buying a house together.
But then Astarion was beaten ‘to death’ by the Gurs.
Tav could immediately tell that something was terribly wrong. The connection they felt with Astarion severing and sharp pain piercing through their heart. Panicked, they tried to find Astarion, going to his home but they already came too late.
Their blood turned into ice when they saw the mercenaries from the Flaming Fist already around his home. Seeing them carrying an awfully pale and beaten body of Astarion. (I don't remember if it was mentioned if Astarion lived in a Lower or Upper city before he was turned, so I chose a Lower city 🤷🏻‍♀️) (Also, not sure how and where exactly were he turned so I hope this is fine)
After a few days, Tav still couldn’t comprehend what truly happened. They felt just… empty. As if every color, every piece of happiness was ripped away from their soul. Not even able to visit Astarion’s grave because of that.
When Tav's family found out, they came to them, taking them to their homeland, because they knew how bad losing your soulmate could end for an elf. Tav fell into a deep grief and depression that lasted almost 100 years, doing some questionable things here and there until they started to function again.
On the other side - Astarion was beaten by Gurs but his final death came from Cazador, the change itself working just like if he truly died. His connection to Tav is severed and the shock of his change into a vampire erases all memory of them from his mind.
And then the 200 years of torture begin. Astarion doing anything he could and needed to do for survival. Flirting and luring victims to Cazador. He was good at it, great even, but something always felt wrong.
Well, everything he did for Cazador was wrong, but touching another person, sleeping with them, and whispering words of love to them seemed wrong for another reason he couldn't understand. It was as if his subconscious was always trying to tell him something, but he couldn't say what.
There was just always something wrong with the victims. Wrong eye color, wrong tone of voice or even their pet names they sometimes used for him.
Is he missing something? Someone? Longing for the embrace of a specific person that is unknown to him.
He always blamed his vampirism for this feeling. Thinking that’s just how it is. The feeling of wrongness and emptiness residing in him for the 200 years of his unlife.
Until the Mind Flayers and Nautiloid.
But back to Tav:
After a hundred years of grief, Tav finally started to get better. Diving into learning the profession/class they have chosen. Trying to enjoy life as much as they could, but the emptiness never fully disappeared. As if part of their soul was still gone.
They even tried to date, pressured by their family to at least try, but when their new partner tried to kiss them… they just couldn’t do it, dull pain spreading through their body and guilt flooding their mind. They immediately break up with the person and decide never to find a partner again.
But apart from that, they were relatively happy. Another 100 years slowly drifting away, the memories of Astarion remaining, if a little faded.
Until the Mind Flayers and Nautiloid.
Game plot:
Tav was walking with Shadowheart and Gale when they heard someone call for help.
Of course, they immediately headed for the voice, trying to help all the survivors of the crashed ship.
But when they finally came to the person they heard, the blood ran cold in their veins, the weapon they held falling from their grasp. It was like seeing him for the first time in their life but at the same time not… Astarion.
They notice that he looks different. His eyes are the wrong color and he’s so pale… but it’s him. They know it is because their soul sang when their eyes locked… but how?
“Hurry, I’ve got one of those bran things…” Astarion's voice trailed off as he fixed his eyes on Tav and gasped as an unfamiliar sensation filled his body. It was as if everything finally clicked and his mind was flooded with memories he didn't know he had.
That's how far I've come with this idea. I'm not sure how it would have gone on, but I imagine it would have taken a while for Tav and Astarion to become partners again. Both mourning the years they could have spent together if it weren't for Cazador. Tav learning to love the new Astarion he has become, because he was different from the elf they knew before and Astarion learning to love again overall.

Idk man, i think the elves that lived in middle-earth during the years of the trees should also have some special, unique eyes that allow them to see in the darkness way better than the elves of valinor or the elves that were born after the sun and moon came about can.
Like they have cat eyes that are slitted and glow in the dark or something.

Headcannons I have about the darkspawn taint/blood magic and how it effects your body over time is probably one of my favorite things.
It's said in the game that when the dalish HOF gets infected with the taint from the mirror that they are asleep, and sick for days afterwards.
In the woods, when going back to search for Tamlen, Merrill and Fenerel both comment to say that you look strange. Paler than usual, and sickly.
You can also see on numerous occasions in the games, instances when the taint is left unchecked and people reach the point of no return.
So, my HC is that previously infected Wardens who aren't treated for the taint soon enough will always have certain physical changes that never go away. Such as being somewhat paler, sunken eye sockets, dark circles under the eyes, more visible veins, and maybe slightly darkened scleras.
It goes further to change appearance if your HOF is anything like mine, and obsessed with power- using any edge that she can even if it means *changing* herself.
Drinking the blood mixture in Avernus' tower, taking the blood from the Cult of Andraste, etc. I feel like so much blood magic augmentation would start to make you physically different over time.
As for like changes in how your body functions with the darkspawn taint (even post-joining), Alistair has already stated that it increases your appetite- Which could be easily attributed to the fact that your body is running harder than before, at all times. You're using the darkspawn taint to your advantage, but you're still infected with it. Eventually, your body will give in regardless. That's what starts the calling, after all.
So, I assume it causes more fatigue, joint pain, hunger, and possibly more flexibility as well, your nails might grow stronger and limbs may slightly elongate depending on your race, looking at the proportions of the shrieks and Hurlocks. I imagine you may even get a bit taller if you're Qunari, due to the appearance of the Ogres.
Due to the increase in appetite, and how much you're eating, it's probably going to lead to a decent amount of muscle gain as well, assuming you're getting in decent carbs and protein.
You will probably start *craving* things like carbs, because your body needs the extra fuel to keep it going. Which could be many things- Bread, potatoes, cookies, etc.
Given the darkspawn and their.. dietary habits.. I wouldn't put it as being out there to begin craving things high in iron, or raw meats. Given the whole.. eating human flesh and blood thing.
Anyways, that's my explanation for why my Dalish HOF looks sick asf, no criticisms allowed. Will be posting badass screenshots in the next few months once I get the handle on lighting edits.

people in lotr who i would punch in the face any day of the week:
note: again. am not an inherently violent person. i don’t regularly punch people. but here is a list of people who id thrown down with any day any time
feanor: selfish, narcissistic and a bratty kid that grew up into a bratty adult. was he a product of his bad upbringing? yeah, but he's still a prick. he's a very complex character but i'd still punch him. 9/10 for being the og "bad" guy
wormtounge: i mean if eowyn or gandalf doesn't get to him first. i have no qualms abt giving this guy a black eye. 11/10 and id love to run him over with a horse after
denethor: honestly the most punchable me out of any of them. i bet gondor would thank me for it, too. 14/10 watch me beat this senile man with his own cane.
saruman: saruman can send his crebains but nothing flies faster than these fists. again i am predisposed to punching wizards and this guy has got to be at the top of my hit list. 10/10 no one treats my babygirl gandalf that way
thranduil: i mean id immediately get sent to the dungeons but also i think someone would break me out. if not gimli, then legolas, bilbo, gandalf, or even elrond. 9/10 for punching, 19/10 for dumping a prized glass of red on his robes.
erestor: seems annoying, pretentious and stuck up. 9/10 come at me you little elf librarian twig
bill fearney: mistreating a pony that noble deserves a knuckle sandwich. 11/10, justice for bill the pony

HP headcanons from redit
Percy was undermining the Death Eater controlled Ministry from within. He forged documents to help Muggleborns and other victims of Death Eater persecution, and sometimes stole and destroyed other papers that ordered arrests.
Dobby and Kreacher were the first ever non-humans to be awarded the Order of Merlin. Harry places the medal at Dobby's grave.
Ginny didn't really have friends among the Gryffindor girls in her year, her female friends are from Quidditch as well as Hermione and Luna.
Harry, Ron and Hermione forgive Xenophilius Lovegood for trying to sell them to the Death Eaters. Out of respect to Xeno, they don't tell Luna the truth.
After the battle a prize for the best seventh year Potions student is set up, and it is named the Severus Snape Medal, in honour of Hogwarts' bravest Potions master.
Peeves was active in the Hogwarts resistance during Deathly Hallows, and helped create chaos for the Carrows.
