Phin Café, 34460 Fremont Blvd, Ste D, Fremont, CA 94555
Tumblr media
Phin Café recently opened in the 99 Ranch shopping center in North Fremont.  A modern Vietnamese coffee specialist, they also serve banh mi, musubi, egg puffs, fries, pandan waffles, smoothies, tea, fruit tea, milk tea, and matcha drinks.
The Phin Coffee: Vietnamese coffee with your choice of topping (e.g., egg, durian, pandan, ube) - $8.50 regular price, 20% off during the soft opening, served with a few crispy sweet baguette chips on the side. I selected coconut for the flavor. Interesting drink. The coffee is made with a small filter that sits on top of the cup (Vietnamese style). There’s condensed milk on the bottom, under the coffee. It would be nice to have the condensed milk on the side, so you could sweeten according to personal preference. An iced coconut slush is served in a separate cup, topped with coconut shavings. You add the coffee and condensed milk to the coconut slushy and stir. The drink was very sweet, like a dessert drink, but the flavor was also very nice – the combination of strong coffee with coconut.  The crispy, sweet baguette chips were okay – simple, sweet, crunchy.
Egg puffs ($4.75): These were okay. They were soft all over, except for the outer edges. I’m used to crispy bits between each egg puff. I wouldn’t get these again.
Order at the register. They’ll call your number when your order is ready for pickup. It’s already a popular place with campers. The décor is cozy – grey and brown with plants.

Phin Café, 34460 Fremont Blvd, Ste D, Fremont, CA 94555, Score: 41/50
Tumblr media
Phin Café recently opened in the 99 Ranch shopping center in North Fremont. It’s already a popular place with campers.
Score: 41/50
Food: 4/5 – They serve banh mi, musubi, egg puffs, fries, and pandan waffle. The egg puff was too soft but they have more savory food options than lots of camping places.
Coffee: 5/5 – They specialize in Vietnamese coffee but also have smoothies, tea, fruit tea, milk tea, and matcha drinks. The Phin Coffee is Vietnamese coffee with your choice of topping (e.g., egg, durian, pandan, ube) - $8.50, served with a few crispy sweet baguette chips. I selected coconut for the flavor. Interesting drink. The coffee is made with a small filter that sits on top of the cup (Vietnamese style). There’s condensed milk on the bottom, under the coffee. An iced coconut slush is served in a separate cup, topped with coconut shavings. You add the coffee and condensed milk to the coconut slushy and stir. The drink was very sweet, like a dessert drink, but the flavor was also very nice. Coconut and coffee go well together.
Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, the password is on the receipt
Ambiance: 4/5 – Cozy, lots of hanging pendant lights, plants, light wood accents. Grey and brown with plants.
Noise: 4/5 – Mellow instrumental music, people are pretty quiet
Plugs: 5/5 – Built in to the posts under the benches
Parking: 5/5 – Plenty of parking in the parking lot
Comfort: 3/5 – The shop is small and popular with campers already. The wood bench is uncomfortable but the chairs are padded. Tables are small and close together. The seats near the windows can be too bright.
Bathroom: 3/5 – One unisex
Art: 3/5 – None. They have their lit up logo on the wall
Tips: Place your order and they’ll call your number when it’s ready for pickup.

In my previous post, I mentioned that we were going out to eat at the newly opened restaurant in Sun Plaza. This is the Nan Yang Dao (南洋岛) restaurant we patronized, and boy was it packed. We were given just one menu so I gave it to mum to let her choose what she wanted. And she picked the Penang Fried Kway Teow (槟城炒粿条) I wanted to eat so I chose something else. My mum had barely eaten it when one random woman asked if the dish was good. She told her that it was indeed yummy. Stir-fried with bean sprouts, plump prawns, slices of fish cake and Chinese sausage, the kway teow were more savoury than sweet and full of wok hei. The noodles were mildly spicy but nothing we can’t handle.

Originally, this Signature Trio Mini Noodles (招牌迷你烫面) consisting of three different mini sized bowls of noodles were intended for mum but she had chosen hers. From right to left, I started off with the Pork Ball Noodle Soup (吊片猪肉丸面汤). Tasted like our fish ball noodle but with two springy pork balls. The yellow noodles, bean sprouts and shredded cabbage is soaked in the flavourful and wholesome broth.

The next bowl, I tried is the Penang Prawn Noodle Soup (槟城虾面) but the prawn is nowhere to be found! Instead, I get slices of pork, fishcake, bean sprouts and a quarter of an egg. Luckily, the yellow noodles were swimming in umami filled broth cooked with the extracted oil from the prawns’ head and shell.
Tumblr media
So, this is where the prawn jumped itself into. The Seafood Curry Mee (海鲜咖喱面) had only one seafood and that is the prawn. The other so-called seafood were mainly prawn rolls or other items made from fish or prawn paste. The spicy curry cooked with coconut milk is rich and flavourful which goes well with the yellow noodles. If you are the type who likes to try many different dishes at once, be sure to order this trio of mini noodles.

To finish the meal, I had the Bear Iced Coffee (小熊冰镇咖啡). Came in a small jug and topped with a cute little ice bear. I love the thick bitter yet not too sweet milk coffee. We were seated next to the glass cabinet filled with lovely and yummy looking Puff Pastry Egg Tarts (酥皮蛋挞). Many customers were seen buying but we had to give them a miss as we were just too full at that moment. But we will order it the next time we are here.

Baby puff thoughts: I wonder how good of a parent pennywise would be? I mean humans are a different species to him and are food and play things so I’m not going to judge it based on how he treats them, that’s like saying a cat would treat their kittens horrible because of what they do to mice. Which is the opposite of reality.
Honestly I’d like to imagine he has like super charged maternal instincts to care for his little clone babies but they definitely would annoy him sometimes being a mom is hard work especially when you laid like 30 of them 😭 and omg how would he hunt anymore they would be so baby brained and try to play with his prey everytime. He would have to teach them how to actually stalk and lure food. That would be hard with a large class of infants LOL.
I also headcanon that the babies and him communicate telepathically so maybe he can teach them wayyy easier than a human infant that is helpless from birth and can’t speak. The puffs are born mobile, hungry for meat, mouth full of sharp teeth, and intelligent. Well still new to being alive and don’t know anything but they can talk and reason hehe!!!
(I also think pennywise cuddles with them and grooms them like a cat 😭💖💖💖 )
I could talk about this concept forever omg I love this so much it’s so cute!!

Hay Tea, 35284 Newark Blvd, Newark, CA 94560
Tumblr media
With so many milk tea places around, I’ve been experiencing milk tea fatigue. However, most milk tea shops in Fremont/Newark close early, and Hay Tea was one of the few that was open after 8 PM. Hay Tea seems fairly new. The grand opening sign is still up.
I really like what I’ve had so far and it was good to see that they use real fruit in their drinks. I could see mangos and other chopped fruit. They have milk tea, salted cheese tea, smoothies, Yakult drinks, fresh fruit tea, brewed tea, and slushes. The drinks come in two sizes. You can specify the sweetness level, ice level, and add-ins (e.g., boba, grass jelly, red bean, etc.). Plus, they have a food menu with the usual fried snacks (popcorn chicken, fries) but also egg puffs, beef noodle soup, and more.
Happy hour is Monday – Friday from 7 PM – 10 PM. When you order a drink during happy hour, they’ll give you another drink free – but there are only a few kinds of free drinks to choose from.
Order at the register or at the kiosk. You’ll get a number and they’ll call your number when your order is ready.
Fresh mango coconut milk purple rice drink ($5.50, 0% sweetness): coconut milk with pieces of ripe mango, purple rice. The purple rice wasn’t as chewy as Yomie’s used to be but the drink was very good. It tasted like coconut milk with bits of sweet mango and nutty rice.
Hong Kong milk tea (0% sweetness): very good, does taste like HK milk tea (stronger tea flavor) and the milk adds enough sweetness for me
Hey lemon tea (0% sweetness): This was free. It’s made with fresh lemon. I drank it the next day. The lemon rind and lack of sugar made it bitter. Probably wouldn’t get again. Might be less bitter if fresh?
Egg puffs with red bean ($8.25): the red beans are sweetened so the waffle was sweeter than usual but the puffs were well formed, soft in the middle with crispy bits in between. Really good egg puffs!
Popcorn chicken ($9.50): Big pieces of boneless, skinless chicken, seasoned. The batter is crunchy. Spotted a little basil. Served piping hot - juicy and tasty. Wanted more basil though. A bit crunchier than average.
The décor is cutesy with a light up boba cup. They just changed the loyalty program - it's not free but you pay $9.99 for a card.
I might try camping here.
