One thing I wish I'd see more of among Ratio fans is some thought about how he views himself as a teacher.
Like yes, of course he refuses to compromise on the quality and rigor of the education he imparts, and he would find it unforgivably unethical to lower his standards in order to pass more students who had not genuinely learned the material. This is core to his character.
However, as someone who is a teacher IRL, I know the absolutely miserable feeling setting that kind of standard can cause. There's the obvious disheartening sense of disappointment ("Are students these days really not capable of doing the work correctly? Is our future in danger, if this is the highest level of understanding our current generation of students can achieve?"), but even worse than that is the self-doubt.
"Is this somehow my fault? Am I not teaching this material in the right ways for the students to learn? Is there something I could have done differently to get through to these students? Would a better teacher have a higher passing rate?"
We know that Ratio does (or at least did) struggle with feeling inferior to the Genius Society, so I think it is also likely, as much as he absolutely will not budge on his academic standards, that he has doubts about his teaching ability as well.
This is the man who wants to educate the entire world to cure the disease of ignorance, and yet only 3% of his actual students are able to get there. How can someone who gets so few of his direct students to a state of enlightenment hope to enlighten the whole universe? If so few students are successfully learning the material of a given class, doesn't that mean the teacher is doing something wrong?Would a better teacher--would a genius, maybe--not be able to impart their knowledge more efficiently and educate even the most challenging of students?
As someone constantly struggling with that balance between keeping academic standards high while also meeting the needs of today's students, I think the passing rates of his courses must affect Dr. Ratio much more deeply than I've seen fans discuss. I think he would question himself harshly over his class success rates, and I think he must be constantly trying to push himself to become the best teacher he possibly can be.
tl;dr: I hope one day the HSR fandom will stop sleeping on the fact that Ratio is an actual practicing professor who probably has astronomical levels of teacher angst. 😂
#honkai star rail#dr. ratio#not to be#ratiorine#in everything I post but#secretly this is just an excuse to imagine Aventurine throwing Ratio a sympathy party#a “Let's eat our feelings" party because the doctor just got his course evals back#and there are some insults on there that would make his ancestors cry#I can just imagine Aventurine reading out the really obnoxious Rate My Professor reviews#in whiny entitled voices#just to squeak a smile out of a gloomy Ratio#but I also really like the idea of Aventurine helping Ratio become a better teacher!!#because he's sharp and a fast learner#but he doesn't have a background in formal/public education#he's not set in the system's ways#he could suggest some really out-of-the-box ideas to help Ratio get through to more students#and be a great sounding board for Ratio's lesson material#brutally honest feedback lol#“Ratio I am in love with you but I still can't listen to you talk about gravitational time dilation for one minute more”#“You're going to HAVE to make this lecture less dry than my martini.”#look let me just enjoy this teacher fantasy for a sec#lol

and then it quietly gets a little more serious.
hey did you feed the baby? tim, make sure to change the diaper before you leave today. bear can you grab my phone, the baby's sleeping on my chest and i can't move. hey guys, you wanna- shhh! they're sleeping, dont wake them up. what does that have to do with you? bear fell asleep with his head on my lap i can't move now! and why are your fingers in his hair? ....bear likes it.
and then it gets too serious
what the fuck are you buying premium baby food for tim?! we dont have that kind of money! oh sorry that i wanted our kid to be properly fed! and it's not like you're doing anything! oh the extra job i work is nothing now? that's not what i said! then what did you mean? you're never home! tim-. when was the last time you read to the baby? when was the last time you changed the diaper, gave them food, burped them? i cant do this alone. i'm tired bear. im sorry baby, i guess i was too caught up in making sure you guys would have what you needed i lost sight of what was important. i'll make it up, i promise. this weekend, you, me, the baby, the zoo. how does that sound sweetheart?

HOW HAVE I NEVER NOTICED THIS
LAYTON USES TU FOR FUTURE LUKE BUT SWITCHES TO VOUS THE SECOND CLIVE'S IDENTITY IS REVEALED.
Tu and vous both mean you but Tu implies closeness : in the entirety of Unwound Future, Layton only ever uses Tu with Flora, the Lukes and Claire
#I'm shaking crying throwing up#WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME.#He immediately uses tu for Future Luke which is A LOT#In real life we often stumble trying to know which one to use because vous is distance but also respect like for a boss or teacher#(Everyone except Claire uses vous for Layton because he's a highly educated adult and a gentleman)#Layton must really appreciate and trust Luke. He immediately went 'Oh that's a Luke of course he's a close one'#And it makes sense that he would discard the tu when he finds out that nope this is a total stranger manipulating us all#But also normal people would go from tu (affectionate) to tu (derogatory). Of course Layton doesn't as a gentleman but. Ouch#And he never goes back to tu not even after finding out Clive is the orphan he saved#I'm crying why are you doing that to me. It's so subtle I had NEVER noticed but it's there#Maybe the vous will go back to respect or pleasant distance one day but Clive isn't deserving of a tu. He's not Luke. He's a stranger#I HAVE to do a complete pronoun analysis one day. I've talked about it here and there but I need to do a big analysis#Professeur layton et le destin perdu#Professeur layton#hershel layton#clive dove#Been posting a lot of angst lately oops#Professor layton and the unwound Future#Professor layton and the lost future#Unwound Future spoilers#Lost Future spoilers

”just because the rat grinders were manipulated doesn’t mean their actions are fully excused and forgiven” to YOU. i’m welcoming them into my arms as we speak
#joking to some extent obviously but#i don’t for a second believe that Brennan isn’t going to explore this avenue further#in the season that is about how the education system beats kids down to their core#of course the teacher was always going to be the bad guy. of course the student villains were under his thumb.#if we don’t end the season realizing the rat grinders are KIDS TOO and not unspeakably evil monsters I’m rioting.#fantasy high#dimension 20#rat grinders#porter cliffbreaker

Tbh the whole 'bloodclan bans families and hates Cat God' thing really reminds me of the anti communist bullshit I was fed in highschool history class.
Every day I count my lucky stars that I got educated in a well-funded school in a blue state. My teachers were shockingly good in hindsight, I didn't get half of the same propaganda some of my friends in other states got.
#One of the coolest things that we did in my high school history class was#My teacher actually taught us the dawn of the soviet union and the rise of stalinism#AND THEN pulled out a book they had to read in their college course!#Which taught the SAME story from the other side. Exactly as a teenager in the soviet union would learn the story#It blew my third eye RIGHT open#And I think it became downright formative because I've never been able to look at the concept of history lessons the same way#Both the American story and the Soviet story framed their home nations as the righteous entity#And I guess the narrative concept of 'framing' had never felt SO REAL before#Same events just described differently... how much can change from wording#And later that year when I learned about the american whiskey rebellion I thought of a farmer uprising in the soviet union#Yknow. Thinking about it. I wonder if this at all contributed to why I made the Educator role...#Tomorrow's history is today's politics lads. Don't forget that.#And they will laminate the shit and the mud along with the truth.#Bone babble

Academic Comeback Icons:
While I love the classic study icons like Blair Waldorf, Elle Woods, Hermione Granger, Spencer Hastings, Rory Gilmore, Paris Geller, Devi Vishwakumar, Maeve Wiley, and Cristina Yang, let's not forget about the characters who haven't had a perfect 4.0 since preschool. I find characters who struggled but got themselves together and turned things around even more inspiring, and I hope you do, too! Please feel free to add on your own academic comeback examples. (Spoilers ahead).
Jeremy Gilbert (The Vampire Diaries): Jeremy suffers a debilitating personal loss and neglects schoolwork during the end of his freshman year and beginning of his sophomore, but then asks for extra credit and makes a fresh start.
Serena Van Der Woodson (Gossip Girl): Serena's grades and attendance suffer during her sophomore year, but she makes a comeback in her junior year and gets into Brown and Columbia!
Candance and Charlie (The Perks of Being a Wallflower): Candance's grades slip during her abusive relationship with Ponytail Derek, but she recovers and graduates as the salutatorian! Charlie repeats a grade due to non-attendance but goes on to do extra credit and make the most of high school academically and socially.
Hanna Marin (Pretty Little Liars): After barely studying for the SATs in season 2, Hanna sets a personal goal for herself in season 3 to expand her vocabulary and sticks to it. Jubilation!
Harry Potter: Though Harry struggles in some subjects, he recognizes his strengths and realizes that the best way to make sure you understand something is to teach it to someone else. Harry realizes his dream of being an auror despite challenges and helps others.
Lorelai Gilmore: Lorelai III may be a Mary Sue, but Lorelai II is a more realistic, hard-working student and mother who knows it's never too late to follow (or figure out) your dreams. She puts herself through college and earns her degree while working full time and raising a nuisance.
The Main Characters of Community: All of these characters are returning to school for various reasons and get back on track after some aspect of their lives not going according to plan. They find, well, community in their study group and help each other reach their goals.

Rahdue's Wheel is one of the few Tarot spreads that uses all the cards in the deck. It's very involved and can take about 3-4 hours to complete, especially the first time you attempt it.
Rahdue’s Wheel was first published in Tarot: Handbook for the Journeyman by Eileen Connolly, although she implied that it was around before then. This Tarot spread is meant to help the querent or client access past-life insight and inner wisdom. Connolly recommended Rahdue’s Wheel as an alternative to meditation for people who struggle with meditation.

Anyway, I decided this academic year I will try to chill out and (most likely) not sign up for my master (i.e., I won't bother to run out of breath in an attempt to conclude my degree by the required deadline to sign up for my masters in a.y. 24-25). Will most likely spend this upcoming semester following a course so I don't have to do the work all by myself (+ get to actually interact and know the professor's teaching style) and consistently work on my thesis. Apart from that I will attempt to dedicate myself to music + fully get into this volunteering association I'm in (which might imply some trips around/abroad + lots of activities)
#decided I want more of a proper break from formal education I guess?#I pursue education because it excites me. I don't see the point of running behind it and do things improperly#plus I love my broader field (compsci) but I have no idea which direction to go in wrt my master courses so yeah#might be better off taking a breather while finishing one cycle of studies and then begin the new one with proper conviction#I don't really feel like a proper human and I need to dig deeper to see what's out there#also like#I will almost certainly keep doing some music teacher stuff this year so I will be getting some pocket money I guess#I believe in interdisciplinarity with my full heart#I just need to properly wrap my head around it#because it's not that much of a. how shall I say#actually implemented topic from what I've seen?#my post
