How did you spend your summers? I was a summer sleepover camp kid. It was nothing like Carl's experience. We'd canoe and swim in the lake. I learnt to sail. There was art and kissing behind the cabins. It was fun.

Did you listen to music? If yes, did you have a favourite band/artist? Yes. I've always loved music. I listened to Alannis Morrisette (my first album), Metallica, System of a Down, Lincoln Park, Eminem, Mariah Carey, Savage Garden and Spice Girls. My taste is still just as eclectic.

And lastly, tell me something you did as a kid that your parents still don't know about: I'd say I was going to sleep over at a friends and go to a raging bush party in the middle of the B.C. forest where'd we'd throw furniture in a huge bonfire and I'd sleep in my car. On the topic of your actual question- I can definitely see her doing that! Some of the non-magic interests we know she has (based on things like posters in her room or references she makes) off the top of my head are like. Off-brand versions of soul eater, resident evil, various animes, etc.

Tbh I feel like (since this would obvi take place during the montage in Thanks to Them) all of the witch kids would really enjoy horror related media? Like. It reminds them of home when they see gnarly bodies mutilated by fungus or anime battles where some twink gets bisected. The boiling isles is Scary As Hell and there seems to be a very casual attitude towards violence a lot of the time (grudgby as a sport, the fact that a 14 yr old was allowed to enter an underground fighting ring, etc)? That's part of the whole joke is that Luz gets isekaid to a very inhospitable fantasy world so unlike her dreams! But for the rest of the hexsquad, zombies and draculas and what have you brings back memories, yknow?

Personally I'm partial to Luz getting some of the other kids into resident evil the most bc. I like resident evil lol. putting forth the hc that Leon Kennedy was Hunters bi awakening

But also Hunter has a Japanese flag patch on his sweater so I'm taking that as evidence that he's at least seen anime. I'm more versed in shoujo than shounen (willow and amity would love sailor moon btw. Amity also likes precure and willow likes cardcaptor sakura) but I feel like there's a lot of shounen anime that would appeal to Hunter. Gus too! But also I feel like Gus has really eclectic taste in media. He watches shows meant for different age groups, he watches things in different genres. He watches French new-wave and he watches kids cartoons. He's got the range.

he just wants to in take as much of human culture as possible and honestly? I think it'd be fun if Luz and Gus' roles as Human and Witch are reversed in the sense that the witch is strong-arming the human who's obsessed with magic into showing them ~human stuff~ bc they're autistic about it. It's dynamics like these that I love in the show and I know they would've loved to do more with everyone in the human realm 😭

(also anon honourable mention to the fact that Hunter and Gus are canonical Trekkies and got into it entirely independently of Luz. Local human literally does not give a shit about human things. Local witches, on the other hand, are eating that shit up like it's bread sticks)

A while ago, I picked up and read Folkloric American Witchcraft and the Multicultural Experience: A Crucible at the Crossroads by Via Hedera

Overall: 4/5 I recommend this book to anyone seeking an eclectic high-level take and understanding of folkloric witchcraft in the States. It doesn't dive deep into any particular region but instead gives a delightful survey of the similarities and differences across the regions. I resonated with this book so much that I wrote a little stream of consciousness around my reactions to the first few chapters. Consider it a journal entry that was supposed to be a book review.

I think to preface here on terms: Via Hedera uses “multicultural,” and I have no objection to that term. I find it inclusive of more than black and brown people, and that’s okay— in fact, necessary at times. When I’m discussing the book in this post, I’ll use that term as she uses it. However, it’s important to note that when I use “mixed,” I am specifically talking about black and brown multicultural individuals.

Many people have objections to “mixed,” and in fact, I’m not sure how I feel about it. But until I unpack that baggage in my own time (and I think this book will help with that), I’ll be petty and take up space here— I can call myself mixed, but please do not call me that.

I was on the train this morning reading minding my own business in the quiet car because I hate talking to people. I have the book on my lap, and someone shouts over to me, “Excuse me? Are you into that? I’m a Druid. What are you?”

What are you? A seemingly innocent question, but with such a complicated answer. I was shocked and under-caffeinated. He kept pressing, and I commented on how cool it was to meet a Druid. It was rough and awkward, and I was in shock.

What am I? Who am I? I was speechless- silenced by the question.

“I see you have a silver ring on? Is that real silver? Oh is that the triple moon? What are you? What are you? What are you?”

Thankfully some not-a-morning-person shut down the conversation before I could answer this incessant question. What are you?

“What are you” is a loaded question to any racially ambiguous person. It’s often the first red flag to me. And when I’m once again confronted with that bullshit question, and when I can tell they are asking about my skin — my most recent answer has been, “I don’t know I’m adopted,” and it’s met with a sudden frown.

Family is a choice where I'm from, and I know plenty of Americans were raised believing the same thing.

Family is a choice; sometimes, it’s not one I get to make. And for many witches-- family, ancestors, and culture all have a huge impact on their lives and identity. I love that for them. The ability to concretely connect to a culture and call it yours is a beautiful thing. (And also a privilege, but that’s a different matter). I’m, in fact, JEALOUS of people with strong cultural identities.

Unfortunately, however, my experience is not that; I have no idea what to call the culture and traditions I grew up with and into. The more I dug and dug, clawed, and scraped at anything I could find, the more confused I got. I just know one thing. I’m not white, and I never would be.

“What are you,” he asked once again. I can still hear it ringing in my ears.

In the context of my spiritual practices, I have no fucking clue how I would answer it.

In the context of witchcraft, I write about here, we sometimes struggle to reconcile the old ways with the new, the ways of one ancestor with another. We're trying to reach for a sense of connection to identity and sometimes we forget that the New World identity of witchcraft is a unique thing already, and that's where folkloric witches are following their hearts these days.

I’m screaming and searching, pleading and digging for connection and identity. A label. Just a name to attach or describe myself. A rule book to follow, a clear path to walk. But I’m not going to find it.

I’m not going to find it because, at the end of the day, I’m a combination of it all. As Via describes it — this multicultural county we live in only holds one clear identity: American. The New World. And while American as a term is a germ and holds so much baggage on its own both inside and outside the United States— I think it’s one of the few words that can fairly describe all the people on this land.

Now would I call myself an American Witch? Fuck that. Nope, no, thank you. But my practice is built like one; it holds many overlapping rituals and traditions. It uses Florida water and Orphic hymns. It consists of ritual ecstasy and fried green tomatoes. It’s home to limpias and toilet offerings. It’s layered and multifaceted; it’s messy and transgressive. It’s my practice. And at the end of the day, I’m not interested in doing it right or by the books. I’m interested in doing it in an authentic way that honors my Gods and the people around me.

So what am I?

I’m mixed, and I’m a witch, and my practice is whatever the fuck works for me and my p/People.

Crochet is something I really find peace and enjoyment in. I was taught by a coworker one day almost 6 years ago now, took her 15 minutes to get show me the basic stitch and I had it down after that. Since then my yarn stash and pattern cache has grown immensely huge.

I am graciously blessed with two absolutely lovable black cat familiars to traverse this journey with me and they are a huge part of me both in and out of my practice.

I found my witch path, Eclectic, during my Saturn Return and never looked back. One of the first things I dove into and learned about was the divination art of Tarot and Oracle cards. I quickly fell in love, with the shuffling, with the feel of a deck in my head, with the wisdom that flew around when I channeled the cards - I fell in love with all of it. I have also found the comfort of working with Freya the Norse Goddess as well as Hestia the Greek Goddess.

As far as my practice goes, I've dabbled in a lot trying to find what fits best.

Made a travel protection jar for my FIL who travels to visit us every few months.

Helped a friend figure out a patron deity, twice, that was seeking to work with them, they still work with one of them today.

The thing about being a vampire was that after the first century or so it became really boring, and then it just Kept. On. Going.

Master Vampire Blackbeard's afterlife is enlivened by the arrival of a new coven in town, lead by the self-styled Gentleman Vampire. Now here's a Master who doesn't mind shaking things up by wearing clothes 300 years out of date, buying a massive gothic mansion for a lair, and leading the most eclectic coven Blackbeard has ever seen.

Of course he's going to fall straight in love with the guy.

It's not all smooth sailing though, not when Blackbeard's second Izzy hates the guy, fucking Calico Jack rolls back into town wanting to party and, oh yeah, Stede somehow managed to kill a famous vampire hunter before Ed even met him.

It's all more fun than Ed's had in centuries, though. Maybe ever. He's definitely going to do everything he can to hang on to the guy.

animal crossing flag challenge~

hi friends! i recently got my hands on an animal crossing switch and with that, comes a brand new island. after achieving 5 stars on my previous island, i was devastated. but! i’m going to put a positive spin on it!

i’m running a contest to see who can design the best town flag for my new island!

my new island is named briarwood, and my native fruit is the orange. i’d really like to see something that ties the island together, maybe incorporating oranges and the island name.

Practioner Red Flags

It’s hard to navigate who you should take information from and who you shouldn’t in Hellenic spaces. And of course there’s no one way to tell wether or not someone knows their shit, but here are a few red flags I’ve personally come across. If you don’t agree or have different experiences that’s 100% okay!

1. Oracles

A lot of Practioners consider themselves to be oracles. This isn’t inherently problematic but the practice of being an oracle is completely dead; an oracle was an elected position, so a modern day oracle is impossible because who the hell is electing you? There are other labels for seers / clairvoyant practioners, so the usage of the word oracle usually indicates a lack of historical understanding, and therefore cult understanding.

2. Zeus Haters

If you are a Hellenic polytheist, you cannot hate Zeus. If you hate Zeus your entire practice is invalid tbh. He is the king of the gods and the heavens, He is the father of the majority of the olympians He keeps balance and order and should be treated with nothing but respect. I can’t say this enough. Hatred of Zeus usually stems from mythos, therefore this hatred indicates a gross misunderstanding of the religion as a whole. This goes for anyone who “beefs” w any of the gods tbh. They all deserve basic respect and if you disrespect one of them you disrespect all of them.

3. Those Who Take Mythos Literally

Adding onto my previous point. The Hellenic religion is not centered completely around mythos. A lot of times mythos where entertainment; literature, plays. Not to be taken literally, not to be used to demonize the gods or other chilidish misconceptions. I have very little tolerance for this honestly.

4. Lore Olympus Stans

I don’t mean this literally. I mean the Hades and Persephone followers who say things like “Hades would never cheat on Persephone” or “Persephone had to escape her overbearing mother” or “She chose the underworld” etc. etc. etc. These practitioners have very little understanding of the gods they worship because these are very common statements that are very false and come from modern misconceptions. But also, literal Lore Olympus fans. The webcomic is just sketchy 😭

5. High Priestess / Priest

Again this is NOT inherently problematic but if someone’s best argument is “I’m a high priestess/priest of >deity< and they told me-“ everything that comes out of their mouth is going to be bullshit. A title w very little relevance does not give you the right to talk over other Practioners (see: Oracles)

6. The Conversationalist

Anyone who claims they are having full in-depth conversations w the gods should be handled w caution. Godphoning and clairaudience do not work like that & dramatized portrayals of those things are pretty harmful imo.

7. “Medusa was blessed”

Also known as “The Ovid Apologist”. This is a huge red flag & shows that the person in question is not critical of where they get their information. This myth was used to demonize Athena or Minerva plus it’s Roman; in the Greek myth, Medusa was born a gorgon. This applies to the Arachne myth as well, it’s Roman and was made w the intent to demonize Athena or Minerva.

8. Labeling the Gods

The gods are gods. They cannot be confined to labels. None of the maiden goddesses where aro, ace, or lesbian. none of the gods are gay or bi, they are all divine beings beyond these very human concepts. They do not have gender or sexuality because those are distinctly human things. Additionally these are modern labels being thrust upon ancient gods. Just an overall no.

9. TERFs

Men can worship any of the goddesses and, historically, have. Women can worship any of the gods and, historically, have. The gods do not confine themselves to gender and therefore aren’t invested in exclusionist bullshit. There are certain goddesses who protected women specifically (Hera, Artemis, Hestia, etc.) but they still had male worshippers and will continue to. The gods love their Trans and GNC followers and TERF rhetoric directly contradicts Hellenic practices, they cannot coexist.

10. Gate Keepers

Or fearmongerers. Deity work IS beginner safe, Hellenic deity work is open and Greek or Roman ancestry is not a requirement. Don’t let anyone scare you into delaying your path. You are the only person who knows what you’re ready for.

11. Triple Goddess

Hekate was not a triple goddess (in the mother/maiden/crone sense). but She most commonly is worshipped as such. She was a goddess of the crossroads and was commonly portrayed w three faces so she could see every direction. Hekate has many epithets and is the goddess of several things. She’s often reduced to the “mother of witch craft” which is. Sad tbh. She’s such an interesting goddess and Wiccan concepts have definitely watered down historical worship of Her. The Mother Maiden Crone thing is originally Diana, I believe.

12. Wiccans

Wicca is full of cultural appropriation & often times Wiccans convince themselves that their way is the only way. In general I personally avoid Wicca praticioners because it’s largely a cluster of practices from different cultures and it’s racially insensitive. It’s also a relatively new religion & I just don’t trust it honestly. Not all Wiccans are pushy about their practice, but it’s hard to seperate the cultural appropriation from Wiccan practices hence the red flag.

13. Rome Apologists

Dramatic title. In general people who don’t differentiate between Greek and Roman gods concern me. Some Hellenic Practioners completely divorce themselves from Roman influence and a common misconception is that all the gods are the same; they aren’t. Again this just indicates a misunderstanding of historical context in my opinion, but depending on how one incorporates it into their practice it’s not always a bad thing.

14. Anti-God spousing

When done right God spousing is a beautiful and personal practice. There’s a lot of people who take it out of context and turn it into a LARP kinda thing, but it’s easy to get information on what God spousing actually is so people who are adamantly against it make me side eye a little ngl. Especially because there is so much misinformation about god spousing, I think it’s important that Practioners push the correct narrative surrounding it instead of buying into the stigma.

15. Classicists / ~”Intellectuals”~

I see a lot of classicists thinking they have some authority over other Practioners but a good understanding of the classics does not equal a good understanding of the religion. Hellenic polytheisism is constantly reduced to its mythos and thats an oversimplification of what this religion and practice is. Classicists who want to have authority over the theological aspects only push this narrative. Don’t get me wrong, I prefer getting my information from classicists who study the religion, but not all classicists do. And being a classicist does not give anyone the right to talk over or down to other Practioners.

16. Twin Flames

Anyone who talks about soul mates and twin flames are concerning to me. A lot of times this narrative is used to make spirituality more marketable, a commodity to be bought and sold. “For $20 I can tell you who your twin flame is”. Point bank, I believe that everyone who needs to be in your life will be, and they’ll be there at the right time. The idea of a chaser and a runner or whatever normalizes abuse. It’s often used to excuse people’s shitty behavior. And don’t get me wrong, this definitely stems from TikTok, but at this point I just consider it a red flag. Don’t worry about the importance of the people in your life; let your relationships eb and flow naturally.

17. Manifestation

Personally I do believe in manifestation, but I don’t think it gives you power over other people and I see this common notion (on TikTok) that it does. I also think that it only works to an extent; the idea that reality is 100% in your control all the time can be harmful and contribute to delusions. I also don’t think u need to write down certain phrases 77 times or whatever. I’m very skeptical of new age manifestation I suppose.

18. Reality Shifting

I hate reality shifting. Honestly. Point blank it’s just lucid dreaming and like manifestation, it’s harmful to the mentally ill. Genuinely stay away from anyone who promotes it as reality shifting and not lucid dreaming. They have not done their research & clearly don’t care how the misinformation on reality shifting affects children & mentally ill people.

19. Star seed

The idea of Star seeds comes from new age spirituality I believe and has less presence in Hellenic spaces but it’s also ableist & often talked about in spiritual spaces so it earns a spot on this list. Like reality shifting, no one who preaches about Star seeds can be taken seriously. Or anyone who tries to tell you that you aren’t “from” earth. None of us are “from” earth, but all of us are supposed to be here in this life time and the idea that you aren’t is harmful.

20. Soul Contracts

The concept of soul contracts is the idea that we agree to every single thing that happens to us before we get to earth. And this is just victim blaming honestly. As humans we desire control over these things. We want to believe we agency but the hard truth is that we do not. And that’s okay. We don’t need to micromanage everything all the time. Not everything has to make sense. Sometimes fucked up things happen and there’s no rhyme or reason to it. The notion that we not only know these things are going to happen but that we agree to them or even decide they happen is disgusting. You did not bring your pain onto yourself and any one who tells you that you did shouldn’t have a tongue tbh. I hate the concept of soul contracts above all.

Please note, again, it’s okay to disagree. These are red flags in my experiences, and that could definitely be unique to me. It’s important that everyone makes up their own mind surrounding these issues. And just because these things make me question someone’s authenticity does not mean I actively dislike many of these qualities or beliefs (save for the TERF thing; if you’re a TERF or exclusionist fuck off).

- You’re in the middle of a blizzard, reading to pass the time, the power cuts in and out- giving you just enough time to scramble about trying to make your home just warm enough so you don’t freeze to death

- You sigh when it flickers off again, taking a sip from the hot drink you managed to make while you still had electricity

- Eyes turn back to the book in your hands, with the poor cell reception, and lack of television you’ve found the only thing you can bear to do it read and sleep

- Only occasionally withdrawing from both to eat whatever cold meal you can

- You’ve settled on reading the Harry Potter books, easy enough to read, even in your current condition

- The books are waterlogged, in terrible condition, you treated them quite rough when you were a child, though not all the blame is yours

- It’s an eclectic group, some hardcover some paperback, some borrowed from friends and never returned, some you got as a good deal at your local used bookstore

- You smile when you see all the parts with Fred and George are highlighted

- They always were your favorites

- You stiffile a yawn, you’re just getting to a good part-

- But a small rest won’t hurt will it?

- You feel your eyes drift close

- When they open again you’re looking at rolling hills, a wisp of steam curling into your view every so often

- Huh what a nice dream

- You close your eyes again only to feel a sharp sting in your neck that your eyes shoot open

- You don’t feel pain in dreams

- You’re in a train compartment an empty red bench in front of you

- You’re alone, the green hills rolling by outside the window

- You’ve seen this type of scenery before maybe in a movie, or a book-

- It looks a lot like something out of Harry Potter

- Your thoughts come to an abrupt hault, the memories slowly filtering in

- You’re a witch- your parents passed away in the first war, and you were brought up by your muggle godfather

- Don’t be mistaken, this isn’t some unfortunate Harry-Potter orphan story, your god father loved you a lot

- Even though he was a bit of a sl*t, the revolving circus of women that left his room every Sunday was practically your childhood form of television

- You even did a report on it in muggle school, high left several faculty members feeling concerned

- Still he loved you a lot, and he tried to be as honest as he could about your heritage, and your parents

- But well- he was a muggle, there was only so much he could do

- Still, he took you to kings cross himself, taking you to your gringott’s safe where your parents meager savings had increased by ten fold over the years, helping you pick your wand and books

- “Now I can’t go with you onto the platform, so write and let me know when you’ve reached safely alright?” You nodded, as he pulled you into a hug

- “I’m going to miss having you home”

- “But now you can bring women to the flat whenever you want” You were only joking but it makes him sniffle

- “I’d trade all of that to have you at home for just a few more years”

- You only pat his shoulder reassuring him you’ll be back during the holidays

- You had tried your hand at a few spells, but nothing drastic

- You were excited to see what Hogwarts would bring, what you might learn, and the friendships you might build

- You were so excited that you didn’t sleep all night, finally succumbing to a nap when you collapsed in an empty compartment

- And that brings you to the present, where you’re practically sweating buckets in the red bench.

- Okay, so you’re in Harry Potter now- some how

- And yeah, you’ve always kinda wished you could go to Hogwarts-

- But not like this!

- For one every book, like 3 kids die

- Even the cute ones, like Collin Creevey-

- And honestly if a main character like Fred Weasley died, what chance do you have at surviving?

- You’re probably just one of those nothing characters that dies at the battle of Hogwarts- if not sooner

- You look down at your hands

- Not to mention you’re suddenly eleven years old

- How many times did you have a nightmare you suddenly had to go back to middle or high school again because apparently you missed a class?

- Well this is like a nightmare come true

- You look under your shirt, holding the neck out only to sigh

- It’s your body still, you vaguely remember looking like this when you were younger

- But god-

- It’s like a strangers body at this point

- Ugh you don’t have time to think about this

- your goal right now is to survive

- A knock on your door pulls you out of your thoughts

- “Change into your robs, we’re getting close” a muffled voice says from the other side and you sigh

- Of course you are

- You sigh as you pull out your plain black wizards robe, almost looks like a graduation gown to be honest

- And that’s the uniform here is it

- Strange

- As you tug on the sleeves you think how you’re going to get out of this

- If you’re right the year is 1990, a year before Harry Potter shows up

- Okay so as far as you know- nothing really happens this year

- You don’t have to worry about all the Pureblood crap because both your parents were wizards, so you’re a half blood at least

- Now it’s all about house-

- If the books are 100% accurate then it’s between Slytherin and Gryffindor, Snape will turn a blind eye to any of your transgressions because of favoritism

- And McGonagall would go to bat for you if the circumstances were unfair

- Still- the Slytherin house seemed problematic what with the old money in that group

- Not all of them were probably like that- just the most prominent characters- you’d really rather not get involved with all that if you could

- And then- Gryffindor was even worse, you might be safe this year, but next year you would be plagued with death flag after death flag- no thanks

- Sprout seems nice enough, but you’re not too sure about that common room, in the dungeons- hard pass

- That leaves Ravenclaw, Flitwick seems nice enough, and the dorms are in a Ravenclaw tower

- Luna Lovegood will be there soon, and well, that could be pretty fun

- So you’ll try for Ravenclaw you think- pulling on your bag and joining the horde of students

- You’re about to join the other first years when you feel a tug on your bag.

- You turn towards the feeling to see two identical boys, a splatter of freckles across their nose, and flaming red hair

- “Are you (Y/N) (L/N)?” The taller of the two asks, a grin curled onto his lips, and his eyes full of stars

- You only nod

- They’re both looking at you like they’ve just seen a movie star and you can’t figure out why

- You’re only eleven years old after all, what could you have possibly done?

- “Was you Mum-“ the shorter starts

- “Was she the famous auror?” The other finishes

- Ah- of course

- Your mother was indeed a famous war hero, known for her noble efforts during the war

- Your god father had told you that at least

- “I’m George, and this is Fred” the shorter - George- says jerking his thumb to his twin

- Oh

- So they’re Fred and George Weasley?!?!

- Honestly you should have known by the red hair

- You can’t believe you’re meeting some of your favorite characters

- You stick your hand out, hoping it’s not too sweaty

- “(Y/N),” you say, “but you already knew that”

- George grins as he takes your hand first, with Fred repeating the motion

- “What house do ya think you’ll go to?” Fred asks

- “We hope you’re aiming for Gryffindor” George adds with a sly grin

- You can feel your face warming up under their gaze

- Alright- change of plan- you’ll try to get into Gryffindor so you can be friends with George and Fred

- It’ll be a little risky, but until the end they weren’t really in any of the serious adventures.

- Besides maybe if you hang out with them, you can save Fred near the end

- “Maybe” you smile at them, hearing a voice call your name for a carriage

- “See you around!” You wave goodbye, stepping into you assigned carriage with a group of other first years

- It’s sort of a mismatch, you don’t quite recognize anyone in here

- Than again the children an age above Harry were never really mentioned

- “Ugh I can’t believe my glasses broke, what rotten luck” a girl besides you says- you turn to see a girl with long dark hair, fiddling with a pair of broken glasses in her hands

- “Ah here, can I?” You ask, holding out your hand, and the girl wordlessly hands you her glasses

- Your murmur a spell and watch as the metal expands curling until it wraps around the broken edge, resembling intertwined vines

- “It’s not the best, but it’ll do for now”

- It’s only when you look up to hand the girl back her glasses that you notice everyone’s watching you

- “How did you do that?” A boy asks, and you shrug

- “Oh well I just said the incantation-“

- “I’ve never heard that one before” another girl murmurs

- You shrug again

- “Anything can be an incarnation of you just put enough feeling into it right?”

- The children clamor at you all at once

- It turns out the two girls were Susan Bones and Hannah Abbott- both Hufflepuff’s if you remember correctly

- Guess they were a year older than Harry in this world

- And then the boy is Blaise Zambini

- You know in the books he’s in a morally Grey area at best.

- “So like this?” He asks and you shake your head

- “You have to put your wrist into it more”

- But now, as he’s begging you to teach him the repairing charm that you cast, all you see is a little boy who wants to learn

- Change of plans, if you get into Slytherin maybe you can watch over Blaise and be his best friend

- That way he won’t get all mixed up in that Death Eater crap

- Maybe you can even get him onto your side, make a coven of witches and wizards and do some non-alignment stuff during the war

- You’re all gathered in the hall, answering a roll call from a rather lithe and strict woman- professor McGonagall no doubt

- After that you’re left waiting, and feeling somewhat bored, and somewhat like you may have had too much pumpkin juice- you hobble off into the corridor looking for a bathroom

- “Hurry back I think we’re about to go into the sorting ceremony” Blaise says and you nod

- You do not, in fact, hurry back

- Because after relieving yourself- you are incredibly lost

- It doesn’t help that all the portraits keep on shuffling around, or that all the corridors here look equally dark

- It’s only on your third time around the portrait of a woman eating an apple do you see what appears to be a person

- “What are you doing in the corridor?” As you come closer you realize it’s a boy, a yellow and black striped tie around his neck. “Shouldn’t you be at the feast?”

- He’s quite pretty, with thick brown hair and rosy cheeks

- “I went to the bathroom and got lost,” you hear him murmur first year and raise an eyebrow “What’s your excuse?”

- He lets out a laugh, running a hand through his hair

- “That’s fair,” he admits. And then after a moment he says:

- “I’m hiding”

- Your eyebrows thread together

- “Like from a crazy ex lover or..?”

- He laughs again, shaking his head

- “No, from my professor.” And then after a moment, before you can ask ‘is it because you’re having an affair with them’ he says:

- “They want me to be prefect for my house next year, and I don’t know how I feel about that”

- You let that sink in,

- “I know I should do it- it would give me an opportunity to represent my house, and look out for all my friends, and I’m sure my dad would be awfully proud but-“

- But it’s a lot of responsibility

- You get it.

- You sit beside him on the floor

- “You should do it-“ and before he can give a reason why you say:

- “You would get your own bathroom and I think that means a lot in a place like this”

- He laughs again, only this time the laugh leaves in loud gaffs, somehow you feel like this is the first real laugh the boy has shown you

- “I’ve heard a lot of reasons, but having my own bathroom is definitely a first”

- He looks at you in a way that makes your hair stand on end and your skin feel hot.

- “I’m Cedric, Cedric Diggory.” He says with an extended hand

- Ah, so this is pretty boy Diggory.

- He does kinda look like a young Robert Pattinson to be honest

- You take his hand in yours giving a firm shake

- “ (Y/N) (L/N) “ and you see his eyebrows shoot up

- “ (L/N) like the-“

- “ Yeah that’s my mum, the famous Auror”

- Cedric’s mouth curls up in a lopsided grin

- “I was going to say inventor- the inventor for the portable infinity box”

- Ah yes, your dad was an inventor. You didn’t know much about it though. Just that his inventions had left you a small fortune

- “My parents were both pretty remarkable huh?”

- And even though they’re not really your parents, and this isn’t really your body, you feel a little sad thinking about them.

- Before you can give Cedric a chance to offer his condolences, you stand up brushing off your robe.

- “We’ll come on Mr. Prefect in the making, show me to where I’m to be sorted” you say with a wave of a hand

- He grins

- “As you wish”

- Maybe being in Hufflepuff wouldn’t be so bad,

- and if you can manage to get close to Cedric, maybe he’ll let you use the prefects bathroom

- Huh, that does sound enticing

- Okay change of plans, you’ll get into Hufflepuff

- For the nice bathroom privileges

- When you get into the hall you feel all eyes turn to look to you

- And even though you’re an adult, you feel awfully embarrassed

- “If you get in Hufflepuff let’s get a butterbeer to celebrate, my treat..” Cedric whispers in your ear, and you catch a glimpse of the lopsided grin curled onto his face before he pushes you forward towards the group of first years

- Your face still feels hot when your name gets called

- You gulp as you move towards the chair

- Well it’s do or die- and you don’t plan on dying here

- You gulp again as the cold wood presses against your thighs as you take a seat

- All you have to do is ask for it to put you in -

- Wait

- What house were you aiming for again?

- Logic dictates Ravenclaw, it’s your best chance-

- But well, you’ve always wanted to be friends with Fred and George it just seems like so much fun

- And then, Slytherin’s not so bad, it would be nice if you could change peoples opinions about that house

- Oh and Hufflepuff might be nice too, you would have someone to look out for you- and you in turn can look out for others like Susan and Hannah

- And so it seems you’ve made peace, no matter which house the hat chooses, you’re happy with the outcome because there’s good and bad in all of them

- These things aren’t one dimensional, they nuanced. And that’s okay

- You feel the hat place on your head, and several long moments of silence pass

- Shouldn’t something be happening by now?

- Like at least whispers in your ear from the hat or something right?

- “I-“ it finally chokes out

- Ah good a decision

- Well what’s your future going to be like?

also i feel like my answer will be a bit underwhelming, but the truth is that i’m still at the VERY beginning of my practice and spiritual journey. i haven’t actively started practicing magick and performing spells yet, as i’m deep in the research stage, but i identify as a witch because that’s the path i’ve set myself on. my family is very religious — my father is a reverend — so i can’t practice openly anyway. im waiting until i can move into my place before i begin setting up altars and such. im deep in the broom closet (but im also a closeted non-binary and bisexual so this is a familiar ride already lmaoo)

by heritage, i probably should take more of a voudou path, seeing as my ancestors (up until my paternal grandmother converted to christianity) practiced voudou, but i was raised christian and i find the abrahamic pantheon more genuine and alluring to me.

nevertheless, my goal is to eventually work with jesus and the archangels specifically (all with Adonai at the top because He comes first ofc). i’ve been obsessed with angels since i was a kid (im named after one lol), so knowing that i can learn to interact with them and learn from them? YEAH sign me up! i already know my practice is gonna be super eclectic because there’s so much that i wanna incorporate (adonai, jesus, angels, the earth, the moon, music, hearth witchery, etc).

i’ve always sort of felt the lure of witchcraft, and before starting my spiritual journey i felt extremely disconnected from my faith. it felt disingenuous and performative, and it wasn’t until i discovered christian witchery that i realized my walk with Adonai didn’t have to look exactly like mainstream evangelicism.

truth be told, i didn’t even know christian witches COULD exist until a few months ago. and since then i’ve taken to steps to really research the history of the bible, it’s formation, who was responsible for compiling it (new testament specifically), and how it’s been changed and edited again and again over time. that being said, my eyes have been opened to a lot of truths that aren’t taught — or at the very least, haven’t been taught to me. case in point: most mentions of witchcraft in the bible originally referenced those who poison/do others harm, and it was later simplified to “witchcraft” to further demonize witches and those who practice magick.

ANYWAY that was a super long ramble (sorry, sorry) but thank you for asking and furthermore being respectful 🤍 i’m still learning more and more every day, but i’m happy with the progress i’ve made. discovering christian witchery led me away from forsaking Adonai altogether (which i came very close to doing), and instead forging a new path that feels so much more genuine, something that really grounds my faith
