I just realized the most tragic thing - that I cannot gush about 31st October being Dziady / Forefathers' Eve because it's a Polish thing and none of my mutuals know what it is and no really good translation of the dramatic works exists to have them read it :(((
It's like a traditional Polish Halloween and nowadays it's mainly known from Adam Mickiewicz's (he's to Poland what Shakespeare is to England) 4-part drama centered around it. It follows a tortured poet (my blorbo, I love him) during the time Poland was partitioned and erased from the maps, its people oppressed but always fighting back. It is one of the most important and culturally significant Polish works ever created. And it's got, like so many themes, so many themes you guys. It's one of my favorite works ever one of my all-time dreams is to play Konrad, a protag from part 3.
So if anyone does know it or is interested in finding out more please please please message me or drop an ask I'd love to infodump!!!
#Come to the Forefather's Eve! We got:#DARK EVERYWHERE SILENT EVERYWHERE WHAT WILL HAPPEN? WHAT WILL HAPPEN???#hello i came to you to ask for Church's approval of our Christian-flavored spiritual seances and it's a national tradition so you gotta#today's youth has it too easy they cannot enter Heaven like that at least give them a yucky mustard seed#SHE HAS A FLOWERCROWN ON HER HEAD AND A GREEN WEED IN HER HAND AND BEFORE HER RUNS A LITTLE LAMB AND ABOVE HER FLIES A BUTTERFLY#*mama Imelda from Coco voice* a living boy in the land of the dead?!#romantic love evolving into (!!!) platonic love which is portrayed as better of the two (!!!) <3#Konrad <3 just. what are your fav books?? lmao I've been trying to find more to read :))
omgg thanks for the ask!!
° obviously DPS (still prefer the movie tho)
° The Secret History which gives off similar vibes (...it's rotting on my bookshelf rn but I SWEAR I'll read it someday and I know I'm gonna like it)
° Harry Potter cause I'm basic
° Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children
° LOTR/Hobbit/Silmarillion
° The Witcher
° Carlos Ruiz Zafón's books (like Marina for example)
° idk if it's available in English but in Polish it's "Sekty szatańskich bogów", it's a book abt famous cults that really existed
° The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
° House of Secrets (by Chris Columbus)
° A Little Princess (my mother likes it too) by Frances Hodgson Burnett
° Polish classical literature, I think it should be translated to English, like "Balladyna" by Słowacki or "Dziady" by Mickiewicz
° and other Polish books but I don't think they're translated :/ (for example Mieczysław Gorzka's criminals)
° The Modigliani Scandal
° Bullerbyboken (it's in Swedish cause it's a Swedish book but idk how it's called in English lmao) by Astrid Lindgren
° Wonder by R. J. Palacio
° ur not gonna guess - idk the English name again 💀 but it's about Calpurnia Tate, by Jacqueline Kelly
° Desert Flower (autobiography by Waris Dirie). It contains sensitive parts cause the woman who wrote it went through a horrible life so search it up before buying <3. It's still a valuable book to read and Waris is an amazing person.
And many more but those are the ones that went through my mind 😭😭

Wake up babe they made the Pamiętnik Teatralny issue on Dejmek's controversial Dziady production available for free, huge news for PRL theaterheads or for people like me who write about the political uses of this play in pre- and postwar Poland. Jelonka wrote a kickass review btw. Not in this issue obviously she was not alive in 2005. But when the play happened

What is dziady?
But speaking seriously: Dziady (in English: Forefathers’ Eve) is a Slavic holiday, dedicated to the spirits. It allowed you (presumably) to contact the other side. After the Christianity entered the Polish territory, Dziady was forbidden, and the practitioners were persecuted. Not fully successfully. Dziady stopped being celebrated across the country, but in many places (preferably distant from the religious centers) was practiced for many years. In Polish literature tradition was preserved thanks to our great poet Adam Mickiewicz and his poetic drama Dziady.
Slavic religion veneration of the dead was very important. It was believed, that spirits may have huge impact on material world. They were connected with fertility and abundance. That’s why Dziady hold so high place in the calendar of Slavic holidays. Dziady was celebrated twice a year (considering major holidays, there were also smaller, more often celebrated festivities) – around May the 2 and on the night of 31 October/1 November. It was the time of change, when the border between realms of the living and the dead was very thin, and spirit could go back to the temporal world. People could try to gain their favor then.
How were the souls hosted?
Our ancestors made sure to appropriately accommodate deceased relatives. Food and drinks were left for the souls. The important function of dziady was also to help spirits to get to the other side.
To assist them, people were lighting the campfires, that were showing them the right direction. Fire was also used to prevent wraiths from infiltrating our reality – that’s why the campfires were lighted on the graves of people who died violently or committed suicide. Campfires were often set on the places of their death. Grave candles are remnants of these traditions.
Rituals were conducted in former places of worship – on the hills, under the holy oaks, where the pagan temple were built, or in the cemeteries. Believers were using wooden masks (“karaboshkas”) as a decoration – you can associate them with Halloween pumpkins. As the time passed, more and more christian traditions were included into the Dziady celebration.
Dziady was celebrated in Poland, but also in Eastern Europe countries, such as Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.
Apart the rituals, Dziady was connected with many other customs. On this day it was common to pay beggars (with food, small objects and even money), so they pray for the souls of deceased ancestors. It was believed that, there is connections between beggars (in Polish also known as Dziady) with souls (which were called by the same name). That’s why they frequently were given the favorite food of dead relatives.
Feasts for the souls were prepared in human houses – so the families could eat together with the souls. During this time, there were special rules. It was forbidden to pour out the water (to prevent wetting the spirits accidentally), to knead cabbage (to avoiding stomping on the ghost) and to bang fist on the table (to not to scare off any spirit). At the time of the feast, ancestors were the only topic of conversations.
Today
Nowadays almost no one practice Dziady in Poland (except, of course, neo-pagans), but there is description of the rituals from the beginning of XX century, from the Latowicki region. People were gathering on November the 2nd. The meeting took place in an old house, then everyone went further – among others, to sacred spot, where back in the days were burial place. The ritual started with the prayer. In the center, there was a fire. Ritual was conducted by two persons: Old Man and the Sorcerer. They were summoning ghosts, which later were fed with fasting food, soaked in milk and honey. It was believed, that souls need to eat and they stay in the Afterlife as long as they are kept in mortal memory. During the celebration, everybody were quiet, and all the faces were covered. Who did otherwise, risked being taken by the ghosts. Ritual was finished before midnight.
These traditions survived in collective consciousness thanks to, mentioned earlier, Mickiewicz. Vision of the poet had strong impact on common picture of folk rituals. Many works of culture were influenced by his poem. For example: in video game Witcher 3: Wild hunt, one of the sidequest was based on Mickiewicz’s Dziady.

(also. daniel deserved to kill htler btw <33). also. im NOT normal about this. okayy soo men of the letter were. always on november 1st. doing the whole dziady thing. adam mickiewicz was invited to one of them and he was like. wow. im gonna write a book about this! so he did. and then daniel i sebastian, as legacies, decide to also. do this shit. and because they are broń brothers. smething goes wrong <3

Theatre class nr. 14 - Summative assessment
Plot:
In Dziady czesc II written by a Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz, the plot revolves around the ritual ceremony of Dziady (or Foreffathers’ Eve) where people gathered in a chapel try to communicate with the spirits of the dead, help them find eternal peace and get to heaven. The ritual is conducted by Guslarz, who is the leader of the whole rite. He begins the ceremony with prepairing to summon the spirits, then the dead people appear, with each one representing different type of offence.
1. Light spirits - Represented by the souls of Józia and Rózia’s children. Their faults are not great, but they did not suffer because they lived in carelessness. They ask for two mustard seeds, which is supposed to symbolize suffering and help them get to heaven.
2. Intermediate spirits - People who have committed average sins, such as the shepherd Zosia. She did not commit any serious sins, but despised the feelings of her devotees. She died at the age of 19 without experiencing the bitterness and pleasure of love. In two years she will be able to go to heaven.
3. Heavy spirits - Ghosts who committed great crimes just like the Bad Lord, who was cruel to his subjects - chased away a mother with a Hungry Child, ordered to beat a boy who stole a few apples, etc. As a result, he is condemned to eternal hunger and thirst.
Protagonist:
The protagonist in the work Dziady part 2 is Guślarz. He is the leader of the entire ritual of dziady, so he is responsible for summoning and contacting the spirits. His figure is a symbol of tradition and knowledge. Guślarz makes sure that the requests of the dead are fulfilled (Józio and Rózia asked for two mustard seeds, which symbolize the suffering they must go through to go to heaven), as he is sensitive to the suffering of others.
Antagonist:
The antagonist is the Spirit of the Evil Lord who represents cruelty. During his lifetime, he was a landowner who did not care about his subjects, while he lived in luxury. After death, he is sentenced to eternal suffering, which he does not understand. He is surrounded by birthat are the souls of his victims. His terrifying figure evokes reflections on the consequences of our actions, which is i.a. eternal suffering.
* Since „Dziady cz2” is a piece that is a ritual drama, there is no traditional protagonist and antagonist. The main role is played by the atmosphere and the world of ghosts, but you can point out the characters who share the characteristics of the protagonist and the antagonist
Climax
The climax of Dziady is the appearance of the spirit of the Evil Lord, which is a significant moment in the drama. By lighting vodka in a pot, the specter of the evil master suddenly appears. His character is significantly different from other spirits because he does not show remorse for his sins and does not even understand why he is punished for them.
TEAM analysis based on climax:
T - Tension
The tension in Dziady część II builds up gradually as the characters perform rituals to summon the spirits of the dead. The tension reaches its highest point when the spirit of the Emil Lord suddently appears. Unlike other spirits, he is emotionless, careless, and doesn’t agree with the punishment he received for his actions. Because his apperance is sudden, it is also unsettling.
E - Emotion
Emotions in Dziady vary from sadness and grief to guilt and suffering.
- Fear and Horror: The Evil Lord’s spirit is frightening because he is certain that the punishment he received seems unfair. This creates a feeling of frightening.
- Sadness: the other spirits, like the innocent children - Józio and Rózia - make us feel sad for them, as they can't go to heaven because of their innocence.
- Reflection: The spirits makes us think about life and death, but particularly about whether averyone deserves the same fate and punishments. Additionally it encourages to reflect about how we should behave and act towards others.
A - Atmosphere
The atmosphere during the climax is intense and dark. The spirits that had been looking for eternal peace and happiness are suddently being dominated by the lord. The uneasy feeling that the ritual itself carries is intensified once the Evil Lord appears. The Evil Lord’s spirit is harsh and cold. It changes the mood from longing into fear, as you can see the differences between the sins of the previous spirits and the behaviour of the Evil Lord.
M - Meaning
Unlike other Spirits, the Evil Lord doesn’t feel guilty about his action and doesn’t show remorse. This scene from the whole drama is especially important, as it sends a message to the audience that how we live today determines our future and what will happen after we die, as well as learn based on the example of the Evil Lord.
"Bo kto nie był ni razu człowiekiem, Temu człowiek nic nie pomoże"
”Kto nie doznał goryczy ni razu,Ten nie dozna słodyczy w niebie”
”Kto nie dotknął ziemi ni razu,Ten nigdy nie może być w niebie”
The trilogy Dziady is an important work for the Polish people as it refers to the historical events of the time when Poland lost its independence, as well as refers to the oppression that the autor, Adam Mickiewicz, experienced.

The tension comes from the fight between the Polish people and their Russian rulers. There’s fear, danger, and rebellion. Konrad’s argument with God adds more drama and conflict.
Emotion
The story is full of strong feelings like anger, sadness, and hope. Konrad’s love for Poland makes him furious about its suffering, while the prisoners show deep pain and longing for freedom.
Atmosphere

Meaning
Dziady Part III is about Poland’s fight for freedom. It talks about sacrifice, love for your country, and the struggle between humans and God.
Climax
The climax is Konrad’s big speech, where he argues with God about why Poland is suffering. His words show how much he loves his country, but also his anger and pride.
Protagonist
Konrad is the main character. He’s a passionate poet who is ready to give everything for Poland. He is brave but also struggles with his pride and emotions.
Antagonist
The Russian Empire is the enemy, representing cruelty and control. Governor Nowosilcow is the face of this evil, punishing and oppressing the Polish people.

Hejka! Jak tam wam mija dzień?
Tumblr media
Dziś trochę wcześniej i nieco inaczej, niż zwykle. Ostatnio miałam sporo rzeczy do przemyślenia.
Tumblr media
Obudziłam się dziś dość wcześnie i mogłam pozwolić sobie by leżeć obserwując uszaki. Wzięłam prysznic, złożyłam pranie i miałam wciąż dość sporo czasu.
Zatem były kłótnie, śmiech i łzy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Wi-wi-wi-sieńki 🍒🍒🍒
Dojadłam warzywa z makaronem, a na kolacje mam zamiar zjeść szparagi. Dlatego już zrobiłam zdjęcie :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wpadnę też z tymi klamotami do rodziców by zostawić je w piwnicy :) wypije herbatkę i tyle. Będę chciała później trochę odpocząć przed piątkiem. Bo to będzie wielki dzień 🥳
Dziś też muszę odpocząć bo moja wewnętrzna bateria się rozładowała. Idę zrobić sobie porządny self care! Tego mi chyba właśnie trzeba :)
