My Durge, Jack at his prime, when he didn't get his brain ransacked and tadpoled. Jack always loved spending his time with Gortash.

Also as much as I love Durgetash, it genuinely ain't about the smut or romance for me (go figure).
I'm solely intrigued by 2 people who realistically shouldn't be able to have any connection deeper than bare surface level going far enough as to defy their gods for each other.
And I can't help but ponder how much of that was just plain manipulative behaviour on both their sides. Cuz like, Gortash, 10/10 manipulative as fuck, but Durge does have that streak as well and considering how well the temple has been doing, they've been at it and they're playing in major politics themselves as well.
And if they're already manipulating and stringing along the patriars, what's to stop them from using the new money banite that just popped up and clings to them for one reason or another.
I wholeheartedly do not believe, at the bare minimum at first, that either of these people had anything 'nice' in mind when hanging out with each other. And now I need to know if and when that view changed and to what extent.
That's my obsession in a nutshell ig.

It doesn't help that the in-game romances are a few weeks (tendays), maybe a month or two old, whereas they've potentially known Gortash for years. The gods started making their newest Chosen in the 1480s: they've potentially known each other for the better part of a decade.
And it's gone. It's gone.

it's funny because durge and gortash started at very similar places, wanting so badly to be "good kids" their entire childhoods. gortash to avoid further abuse at the hoh and durge because they were, excluding their one little huge thing where they had an uncontrollable bloodlust.
but then they also ended up at the same place but on opposite sides of the spectrum. druge is still trying(technically succeeding) to be a "good kid," just now for their insane dad instead of a conventional family. conversely gortash has thrown out any idea of "goodness,” he never wants to feel that way again and he doesn’t care if he makes others feel that way to avoid it. he’ll do whatever he wants to you and if you’re anything like him, powerful, resourceful, deserving, you’ll pull yourself up from your bootstraps like he did. it’s interesting to wonder the ways they might’ve clashed in their motivations

Not gonna lie, I think my favorite potential options to follow 'Is that what you-', are 'think' and 'want'
Is that what you think? You get to come back and tear everything apart because it has to be this way? As in, You think you can just waltz back into baldur's gate- no- my life, play the same little games we used to play, rekindle our alliance, just so you can throw it right away? You think you can do that while telling me you RETURNED the feelings?
You think 'this is how it must be'? Do you REALLY think that?
Or in a similar way:
Is that what you WANT? To throw it away this second chance we have? To destroy everything we worked so hard to build together? Now that we are finally together once again?
Incredulous and angry, like he is about to argue with them, try one last time to get Durge to see reason after the hesitation brought on my his memories, his emotions, gets the better of him. But then he reels himself back in and proceeds with the battle instead. Because that's not his Durge and it's what he HAS to do. It's just. Hhhhhhhhh

Gortash and Faeryn have a history… 👀🫠💀
it’s canon that Gortash and Durge were ✨involved✨ on some level before the whole tadpole adventure so i took that idea, put my own spin on it and wrote a three part fanfic exploring that part of Faeryn’s lore! if you’re interested in reading it, it’s titled Fragmented Memories (Prologue, Part 1 and Part 2) on AO3! click here to read the prologue
⚠️mind the warnings, it does get into some dark topics

chewing on how gortash must have felt when orin said she was taking over for durge.
he surfaces from the gore and shadows of moonrise towers, and instead of ketheric and durge meeting him in the oubliette it’s ketheric and orin. and she says she’ll be speaking for the temple of bhaal from now on. durge’s dagger is in her hand and it’s dripping blood.
his cloak deadens the swooping sensation in his stomach, and the fear and rage and grief feel distant. he goes through with the plan. what else can he do?
he stays at moonrise for a while, though. a week, maybe. it’s all he can afford now that he has real work to do in baldur’s gate. but he can’t find durge, and leaving without their body feels like letting orin win.
he leaves anyway. what else can he do?
he pursues his goal with single-minded determination. if he fails now, then durge died for nothing. he has never worked so hard on anything in his life. he will rule, orin will bleed, and durge’s death will not be meaningless.

Give me unrequited Durgetash where Gort expertly exploits Durge's affection for him, their basic need for approval and companionship, teases their psychotic obsessions and Bhaalist wedding plans. He toys with their emotions, treats them as just another tool to achieve his goals (and of course, delay his premature death). In the back of his mind, their willingness to fall for his manipulations makes them weak.
Only after losing Durge does he realize they were everything he had. His only true ally. His equal and confidant, the one person who believed in him, who would always come through for him. Someone who took it on the chin and somehow kept the bloodlust of Bhaal under control. Orin was weak. Ketheric was useless. Durge was perfect.
Then give me a returned Durge who doesn't give a single shit about their history together. A Durge who sees Gortash's game and turns it against him. Who entertains his puppy-eyed offer of an alliance for the sake of pragmatism. Give me a Durge who loves Karlach and now knows real love in return. A Durge who doesn't even deal the killing blow - a prospect that once repulsed Gortash, but that he now upholds as a pillar of romance, as proof of his significance to someone, some proof that HIS Durge is still in there. But no, he doesn't even get that. Durge gives his life to Karlach. To someone who cares.

'Those rare few who transcend the normal boundaries of any skills or trades and excel due to passions within them for their art become very attractive to elves.'
'Irresistible' is a word used later in the paragraph and I could say something about how this is how most half-elves are born because elves apparently go nuts for non-elves who are obsessed with a chosen discipline.
Instead I'm just cackling in my brainrot over my version of durgetash where a certain N'Quess's engineering skills and mad scientist drive really did win the heart of a murdergod elf and cause them to lose their damn mind. Bhaal was a little too accurate in his imitation of an elf.
