This is going to be long, but I want to describe an example of how misogynistic behavior can run way deeper than a “if only Rick Berman hadn't been there...” meme. And I want to do it by analyzing one of the most notorious stories about him, to boot.
We know Berman was personally responsible for forcing Terry Farrell to quit the show ever since “The Fifty-Years Mission: The Next 25 Years” was published in 2016, and Terry Farrell laid out her side of the story there:
According to Farrell, when her Deep Space Nine contract was expiring following the end of season six, she requested that she appear in fewer episodes, noting the sheer number of regular and recurring characters featured on the show, which would allow her to work fewer hours.
TERRY FARRELL: Basically [Rick Berman] was trying to bully me into saying yes. He was convinced that my cards were going to fold and I was going to sign up. He had [another] producer come up to me and say, “If you weren’t here, you know you’d be working at Kmart.” I was, like, “What the hell are you talking about? I had a career before this. Why the hell would I be working at Kmart? Who are you?” Just to be jerky, he’d call me in my trailer: “Have you been thinking about it yet? Are you going to sign?” Like, right before I had a scene. It was that kind of thing. Rick Berman said I was hardballing him, and I was, like, “I’m not. I just want to have a conversation. You’re giving me a take-it-or-leave-it offer and I’m not okay with that.” So I finally did have a conversation with him and asked to cut down my number of episodes or just let me out.
In the same book, Berman obviously denies everything:
To say that this woman was let go is absolutely ridiculous. She was not fired. She requested to not be in all the episodes. She wanted to be a recurring character. You can’t be in a situation on our shows where somebody is just going to do seven out of thirteen. I love that people, including some of these actors, love to think that I had all this power. The studio basically said “no way.” She’s a regular character and she does all twenty-six episodes or nothing. And I think there was a big battle with her attorneys or agents with the studio. I don’t remember whether this had to do with money or had to do with her refusal to be in every episode, but she ended up departing. It certainly was not my choice. It was the loss of a character and it was difficult for us. I’ve heard stories of her at conventions blaming me and saying that I had something to do with her leaving, which could not be farther from the truth. Brannon and I talk about this all the time, you tend to focus on the nasty things people say about you, and I know that there’s been a lot of animosity on the Internet or at conventions that are 100 percent untrue. It’s so painful to read stuff like that.
I love how he plays the victim at the end there! Classic villain behavior. And this is what the book says about Ira Behr had to say about his reaction to learning what had happened after the show was over:
IRA STEVEN BEHR: Let’s put it this way: if I had known what was going on, I would have stopped it. There is no doubt in my mind, because that opened a whole can of worms, and I learned more than I wanted to know what was happening under my nose and behind my back of things that were going on. I would have walked over to the Cooper Building and in one conversation I would have stopped that from happening, but everyone chose not to tell me for various reasons. Including, as I found out, to protect me from having to get in someone’s face and what that would mean for my position and stuff like that. And I said that was all ridiculous.
HANS BEIMLER: Ira was really upset about it when he found out, because it happened on his watch and he wouldn’t tolerate that kind of shit.
TERRY FARRELL: When I told Ira what happened years later, I think he almost projectile vomited. Ira was, like, “We were writing for you. How could you think we didn’t like you?” But I thought he was thinking whatever Rick Berman was thinking. I thought they were all thinking the same thing. Rick Berman’s representing them, right? But Rick Berman, you don’t feel like anyone else could tell him anything. That’s the number-one guy. It begins and ends with him so I didn’t reach out to talk to Ira, because it didn’t even occur to me that he’d have a different opinion than Rick. Ira, when he found out, was, like, “You would have been recurring?” and I said, “Yes. It would still be thirteen shows.” I wasn’t starring, Avery starred in it and so did Nana. I was number five. There really was no harm in having me be recurring. But Ira had no idea about the situation. I didn’t know I could have talked to him about it at the time.
So far, so good, right? “The Fifty-Year Mission” builds a pretty straightforward narrative about Rick Berman being a petty king (which he was! There are many more stories about this kind of behavior coming from him, both on TNG and on Voyager) and everyone else having to live under his absolute rule, which resulted (among many other things) in an actor being let off when it could've been prevented. If Ira Behr, very well known for his penchant to picking fights with Berman whenever it served to make DS9 better, had been actually informed and not shielded from the situation by the studio culture (which I must say he cultivated himself, the writers pretty much never visited the set on DS9) then all of this could've been prevented. The villain is Rick Berman according to this book, no doubt about it.
Let me be clear, I really believe Terry Farrell here. I have no doubt she was forced out once she was unwilling to just passively accept a contract that would've meant one more year of being totally tied to DS9. I have no doubt that Berman tried to intimidate her into signing it, and flipped out when she refused. It fits into the many anecdotes about him that have resurfaced over the years. And yet the reason why Farrell didn't tell anyone, especially not Ira Behr, about it is kind of... strange, right? Why did she feel like Behr wouldn't have had a different opinion than Berman? It's, I think, the first indication of how much of what she experienced was also due to the entire environment of the production of the show.
But that's not all, because “The Fifty-Year Mission” is not the end of this story, or how it's been told. Imagine my disappointment when the DS9 documentary “What We Left Behind” came out in 2018 (I'd already read the book by then) and, in it, Behr chose to go with a milquetoast ‘we just don't know what happened!’ narrative about Farrell leaving the show. I was honestly aghast, the book had been out for years at that point, and it had been published while the documentary was still in production. Farrell had already gone on record with her version, a very believable one, and yet Behr pulled off some of the most mealy-mouthed both-sideism I've ever encountered, and he did so in a product that would obviously gain much more visibility than an unauthorized non-fiction book about the Trek machine. I imagine Behr had to, in order to keep his interviews with Rick Berman in the doc, but it's hard for me to not see this as him pretty much throwing Farrell under the bus a second time for the sake of ‘the show must go on’. I sincerely lost all my respect for Behr right then and there. I'm sure he was a pretty good showrunner and DS9 is better for it, but I don't think he cared about the people under his jurisdiction as much as he said he did “The Fifty-Year Mission”. I get the feeling that he just disavowed his own words at the first tough decision he encountered, in fact. It's worse because Farrell in the book seemed genuinely relieved to hear that Behr would've had her back—but would he really? His behavior from then on casts more than a few doubts on that, imho.
So that is why I'm not impressed when Trekkies are like “if only it weren't for Rick Berman...” I'm not even talking about people who just deferred to Berman completely (like eg Brannon Braga); I'm talking about everyone, no matter the relationship they had with Berman. No one on the Star Trek lot was immune to poor decision-making, or revealing their racism, sexism, homophobia through their choices of what to air and how. The discrepancy between Behr's words and actual actions re: Terry Farrell is just so emblematic to me, but by no means exhaustive. There are so many more examples of the kind of cutthroat environment Trek was.
So no, I don't believe narratives about one singular villain in the Trek production that could've been vanquished if things had been just a little different. It was way, way more complicated than that, and built into the culture that made Trek in the first place. It's a giant bummer for sure, but it's the closest thing to the truth I can surmise.

rewatching the first episode of Hannibal and holy shit I forgot how good this is but it's actually insane that Brian fuller set up the ep like this, he introduces will and Hannibal by first briefly showing them at their core, at the darkest, most vile part of them---we get a glimpse behind the curtain---and then its gone, the curtain is snapped shut and we see their masks, their human suits.
Will empathizes with killers because he likes it, and he wants to kill but he refuses to give into the urge because he knows how much he'll like it and he won't be able to stop. So he lives vicariously through other killers, satisfying his own dark urge by feeding it little morsels of secondhand blood lust. Every crime scene he works gives the urge something that satisfies it, not enough for it to grow, but enough for it be sate. Enough that he can ignore it for long enough that he can walk around and be Professor Will Graham who is Weird, Brash, and Non-sociable.
And Hannibal is a cannibal at night and a psychiatrist by morning.

How do we feel about Beach wear Noritoshi....
Tumblr media
Everyone thinks he'd go covered head to toe wearing those wet suits divers use, but no. Noritoshi isn't the type to want to attract attention to himself when it's not needed, so he'd try to blend in. Emphasis on try.
He's the guy wearing a covering or some shit. I think you'd have to fight him to wear a translucent one. (if you splash him with water, you'll acheive the same effect thoughahahaha) even though it's a beach, he's trying to find an appropriate way to cover up, hes just like that. yes to sunscreen ofc. I can see him in a sun hat, but it's not his.. maybe he took it from one of the girls
HIS HAIR WOULD BE UP BC ITD BE TOO HOT AND THE SUN HAT WOULD HELP HIM FROM GETTING OVERHEATED H.H....H IS FACE WOULD BE FLUSHED BC OF THE HEAT AND. AND. AND.. he's like the beach babe on the shore, soaking up the sun and reading a book or smth. if you splash him with water, i can see him trying to get you back. then boom bam, hes in the water with everyone else.
OH FUCK that's even IF he goes to the beach. it's like seeing God in the flesh, idk man I'd go blind........... hed probably come along when he realizes theres hot people at the beach. he cant have you looking at people in that state, hold on hes going. give him five minutes..!
