Ngl, I miss navigating like this though. Mapquest became a thing around the time I was 9 or 10, and before then I would love looking at road maps in the car. I even got to be my dad's copilot on a trip from Illinois to Florida. He would do all the real direction-writing-down after studying a map, and I would just tell him what he wrote down, but I still felt so important and adventurous.

I often wish we could just choose to go on a short trip using only paper maps nowadays. Everything is on a timetable and scheduled though. Oh to be adventurers again.

I will push back a little bit on the accusations that Bells Hells “don’t know what they want”. Quite a few of them are very clear in their goals! Ashton and Dorian have wanted to nebulously shakeup the existing divine power structure for a while and the Archheart’s plan gives them a pathway to do so. For the last 50+ episodes Orym has been explicit about trying to avoid any earth-shattering divine revolution because he knows when you mix up the status quo you can’t control the death toll. Braius wavered a little but he seems locked in to that Asmodeus Lyfe. Fearne might read as indecisive but that’s only because her priorities are making sure her friends stay safe and content (and preferably with her, but she’s less possessive than her nana). The only people who still don’t know what they want the world to look like at the end of this are Chetney, Imogen (whose opinions are firming up fast), and Laudna. Imogen and Laudna have always been caught in a binary loop of “as long as you’re happy, I’m happy” and Chetney isn’t sure he’s going to live out the month.

So why all the endless, discursive god-debate? I’d argue it isn’t because they don’t know what they want the outcome to be, it’s because they don’t like that their friends don’t share their opinions. So they bicker and ask questions and look for that secret tidbit of information that will bring them into consensus. Unfortunately, there isn't a god who's going to tell them the Real Correct Answer. There is no magic way to make your friend agree with you about the fate of the world. This PvP party might need to satisfy themselves with a little PvP.

regarding fusion power: what about for rockets? From what I can tell (which is not much) I’m not sure magnetic confinement would work for space travel, at least, not the really convenient “Pluto in one election cycle” kind of drives we want

You're thinking too small!! Get rid of the torus and rethink the problem from the beginning.

Take an old-fashioned linear fusion reactor concept, like a magnetic mirror, and chop off one end. Use “aneutronic” fuel, like deuterium-helium-3, so all the fusion products are charged and you can direct them through a magnetic nozzle. Flow some other gasses around the reaction to add more heft to the exhaust, and point it behind you.

Now you’ve got Direct Fusion Drive, baby!!! A fusion thruster, using the reactor plasma itself as propellant. Extremely high specific impulse (like, 10000 s), and it may be able to hit that four-years-to-Pluto milestone!

A few people are working on variants of the concept, but I’m most familiar with the one being built by the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab and a spinoff company. They have a funky field-reversed configuration device, but that's a tumblr post of its own. Maybe one of my plasma physicist mutuals could chime in and explain it better than a mechanical engineer >.>

Matthew and Alfred are awful behind the wheel for different reasons. Matthew has terrible road rage and will scream and flip off people the whole car ride. Alfred is just bad with directions and too stubborn to put it into Google maps. So he ends up in like a completely different state when he just wanted to go to the grocery store. They’re both terrified to be in a car with the other one driving.
