I'm trying to count how many times Hiccup is captured/kidnapped throughout both series, the movies and the short films, so here's my criteria:
Any time he is unwillingly moved from one location to another by a dragon, viking or other character.
This includes any dragons picking him up and flying off somewhere, even if he is okay with it later.
This does not include when Toothless/his friends drag him off to show him something.
Any situation that prompted the dragon riders to rescue him.
Any plans that involved him giving himself up or joining up with a villain/antagonist.
This does not include the time he and Dagur were trapped on that island together.
Any time he is tied up and led somewhere or locked up/held in place with a guard.
Here is the list of situations I have compiled in (hopefully) chronological order:
HTTYD
Congratulations, no captures or kidnappings.
GIFT OF THE NIGHT FURY
When Meatlug (accidentally) brings Hiccup along to the Rookery.
RIDERS OF BERK
S1E6 - Hiccup gets taken to Dragon Island.
S1E16 - Hiccup is captured by the Outcasts on their island.
S1E19 - Alvin Captures Hiccup and Toothless at the "Isle of Night".
DEFENDERS OF BERK
S1E20 - Hiccup gives himself up to Dagur as part of his plan with Alvin.
RACE TO THE EDGE
S1E1 - the Dragon Riders get captured by Daugr on a hunter ship.
S1E7 -The twins put him in prison (this one's just here because I think it's funny).
S2E6 - The Dragon Hunters capture him.
S2E11 - The Dragon Riders get captured trying to save the Skrill.
S3E1 - Hiccup is captured by Dragon Hunters while trapped on an island with Dagur.
S3E8 - Hiccup and Toothless get caught in a Dragon Hunter Trap and are kidnapped and forced to participate in dragon fights.
S3E12 - Viggo captures all the Dragon Riders at the auction.
S3E13 - The Defenders of the Wing capture the Dragon Riders.
S4E3 - First Hiccup is caught by Amos and Berthel.
S4E3 - Then he's caught by Savage.
S4E3 - Then Krogan gets him after Throk saves him.
S4E3 - Ryker captures him for the tiniest bit right before the riders arrive.
S4E10 - Hiccup is caught with Ruffnut when he tries to rescue her from Viggo's trap. Unlike the other traps, he needs the other dragon riders to rescue them.
S5E2 - The Sandbuster captures Hiccup and Snotlout.
S6E8 - Viggo hands Hiccup over to Krogan as part of their plan.
HTTYD 2
Valka kidnaps Hiccup and Toothless.
HTTYD 3
Grimmel captures the dragon riders.
HOMECOMING
Once again, no captures of kidnappings
Up For Debate:
There are a few situations which technically fit the criteria, but I'm not sure if they fit considering the context of the show:
S5E5 - the riders are stuck on Vanaheim, guarded by the Sentinels. (Rtte)
S1E3 - This is a technicality, but when Hiccup joins up with Dagur to keep him away from the other dragons. (Dob)
EDIT: I forgot that even though my criteria says that the time Dagur and Hiccup are trapped on that island together (S3E1 of RTTE) doesn't count, because he is joining up with an (at the time) antagonist, there is a moment when Hiccup is captured by Dragon Hunters near the end of the episode.
After careful discussion (aka me ranting at my roommate) S4E10 of RTTE is also moving from "up for debate" to the official list. These changes are reflected above.
This brings our official count to 22 captures/kidnappings!
Honestly, the hardest part about this was finding the distinction between being captured or being trapped and what I wanted to count. When Hiccup isn't captured, he spends a lot of time in traps.

Haha new Hijack au!
The Haddocks and the Overlands are rival clans, sworn enemies for generations. Though Hiccup had no clear idea why that was, all he got from his father were curses and declaring that 'the Overlands were a bunch of no-good, thieving, rat-faced scum!' Hiccup decided not to open that jar of curdled yak milk.
A recent attack by Krogan and his fliers had left the Riders to take refuge in the closest island, which happens to be the once-secret home to his rival clan. Found out and imprisoned by Jack and his tribesmen, Hiccup is determined not to let whatever family history they have keep him from resolving things peacefully.
With the threats of Dragon Fliers finding out about Jack's island home, he reluctantly lets them stay...
If only their snaggle-tooth leader stopped trying to eagerly make friends with him like some puppy-eyed fool.

Trader Johann RTTE Season 3
Tumblr media
WARNING: HUGE POST AHEAD!! MASSIVE spoilers for RTTE S3!
Hello Lovely People! About a year ago, I mentioned how my sister and I were working on a list of all of the references and head-canons that we had noticed regarding the Johann betrayal in the seasons and episodes leading up to the reveal, and I had posted wondering if anyone else would be interested in see that list. The response was overwhelming, and we set to it.
This was such a fun process, and we got to rewatch a huge portion of RTTE through working on this list. It has been such a labor of love, and I am so proud of it. HOWEVER
Here is our disclaimer. We do A LOT of inferring and connection of head cannon dots in this post. Therefore, please DO NOT fill any re-posts with anger or negativity if you strongly disagree with a head-canon that we have included in this list. We would love to discuss them, but please don’t simply repost “wrong” or anything else related if you don’t agree. We would love for these posts to be a place where the community can discuss the craziness that is Traitor Johann and not argue about who is “right” about one connection or head-canon or another. It is also highly likely that we missed something that disproves any details or head-cannons in a different episode or time, and if you notice that, please let us know!  :)
Season 3 Notes:
Episode 1: The Enemy of My Enemy
Johann knows exactly what will draw in Hiccup, a dragon hunters’ ship might be the only type of ship he would even stop to investigate. It was also placed close enough to the Edge that anyone who was on patrol would have found it. The ship was obviously a trap.
Headcannon: Dagur never knew that Johann was involved, which is pretty much proven later. These men shown are not Viggo’s, and this is maybe the first time in the series where this is the case. The branding also could prove that these men are not even Johann’s but Krogan/Drago’s. I think there is a lot left to individual interpretation as to when and how Viggo, Krogan/Drago, and Johann came together to try and take down Hiccup with the King of Dragons.
Episode 4: Turn and Burn
(This is one of my favorite episodes because I am a huge fan of Snotlout, and this episode has a TON of Hiccup and Snot bonding) Nothing related to Johann though.
Episode 5: A Buffalord Soldier
Viggo admitted that he killed the people on the fishing boat to poison one of the riders. This is similar to the dragon hunters’ boat from episode 1. Placed just enough in the reaches of the Edge’s water space that one of the riders was guaranteed to find it. He also knew that Hiccup was capable of finding the dragon and he was not. Viggo’s respect for Hiccup was used over and over again to lead to benefit for Viggo.
“I knew where to get the supply, if I could only generate the demand.”
Viggo didn’t even know for certain that the dragon existed, but he knew that Hiccup would search for it until the end of the earth and there was a better chance than Viggo himself to find it. This is similar to how Johann uses Viggo and Hiccup to lead him to the King of Dragons. I also think that Viggo might have used the Scourge as a way to make his men search harder for the Buffalord, and when they couldn’t find it, tried to tap Hiccup’s brain – which worked for a short time.
“Supply and Demand” is also a phrase that Johann has routinely used in the show.
“That’s a loss I’m not willing to take.” Hiccup’s line to Viggo. I believe that this was what clued Viggo into Hiccup’s affection for Astrid, that he had romantic feelings for her that were deeper than even the extreme friendships that he had with the rest of the riders. Viggo had not previously known that and used it against him once he had the chance in S4E10.
Episode 7: To Heather or Not to Heather
There is a shot here that the dragon hunters were tipped off that the Riders would be aiding the Nadder migration by Johann. My sister and I believe that he was working totally in the shadows and pulling strings to try and create accidents or incidents for the Riders during this time, but never took bold actions because he was trying to maintain the relationships that he had built for as long as possible. I think there is a solid chance that this was one such planned incident.
Episode 8: Stryke Out
The man in charge of this ring hates Ryker, and is confident in his job enough to say that which means that he could be employed by someone who he believes would protect him even if that comment got back to Ryker. The island that Hiccup and Snotlout found was a trap, and a linkage island for traders to meet up, maybe even run secretly by Johann for his wares too.
“Tell me where they are!” is one of my favorite moments of the entire series.  This is one of my favorite twin sub-plots of the series as well!
Episode 9: Tone Death
Mysterious dragon trader/hunter, who slips in and out and has amazing knowledge of how to get to place to place.... Could this be Johann? Or another one of his goons under specific orders?  It is never really again mentioned, but the Death Song egg is certainly in the "rare and valuable" category that Johann flaunts.
The egg could have been planted as a trap for the Riders. The hunters tried to protect it for a time, but it was very easily abandoned over the threat of their own capture, something that is fairly uncommon in the rest of the series. “They want the egg? Give it to them.”
Episode 10: Between a Rock and a Hard Place
Losing the quarry and the stronghold was not in Viggo’s plan, this was a time he underestimated the Riders, and led to a big loss. We think this could have been one of the first times that compounded Johann’s eventual decision to come out of his shadowed leadership and break his cover.
Episode 11: Family on the Edge
Hiccup: “Viggo doesn’t defend it because he thinks we don’t know about it.”
Dagur: “Hiccup, you’re too gullible. Why attack now...did the number of ships go up?”
Hiccup: “Well-”
Dagur: “Of COURSE IT DID. Because eight ships wasn’t enough to draw you in! Use your brain Hiccup!”
Viggo and Johann have a deep understanding of exactly what pushes Hiccups buttons, and Johann would have heard enough conversation to understand what the riders were comfortable taking on. I think a lot of people forget that this man was akin to a yak to the Berkians and the Riders. He was part of their community, and his personality was enough to equally make you forget that he was there, yet never forget him. That is part of his genius and mentioned in the reveal. Behaving as a “buffoonish fool” made him invisible in important conversations. They assumed he wasn’t listening or understanding but he was always doing both.
“That it was a trap. All along.”  Excuse me while I sob over this episode again even though he lives.
Episode 12: Last Auction Heroes
The whole thing at the beginning was doubly staged if you can think through that irony. All three parties playing different “decieving” roles in order to maintain an image for another. It’s crazy to think how easily the riders were played here in Viggo and Johann’s perspective.
“Are you sure he is coming?” “Positive.” This could have been the first time Johann put Krogan and Viggo togehter to try and open them to the idea of working together to defeat Hiccup, or even be aware of each other on a deeper level. We know that Krogan and Viggo were enemies at one point, and this could have been the first show of trust for both of them to try and form a truce in the name of taking down the Riders, or finding the King of Dragons.
Johann is the one who convinced Hiccup to bring the gold, and it is never shown that anyone else displayed wealth, even though he told Hiccup that was the only way into the auction.  This could have been the agreed upon way between Viggo and Johann that the rider in disguise could be pinpointed.
Episode 13:  Defenders of the Wing Part 1
Terror-mail: Its a 50/50 that either Johann or Viggo came up with this strategy of the line where Viggo and Hiccup would “split” the archipelago. Either way Johann benefits.

Note
Hey, again, wickedcriminal, I see that the half brother au posts have returned and I am so happy I was going through withdrawal I had to reread all my how to train your Dragon books in order to pass the time. I also wanted to thank you for inspiring me to reread them. The books were so much darker and better than the movies. I would be able to finish all of them if I had them ALL!?! Seriously I have books 1-8. I have trying to get the final ones but my local book stores never have them in stock! Though seriously, I wanted to thank you for posting such an amazing little alternate universe story, I cannot wait for your story to start getting some more attention, and your book based of it to start I will be their to start reading it as soon as it comes.
I would like to go onto my asks now, as with the new law that I’ve recently seen I’ve had a couple of questions that I now have, so if if the twins are keeping a score of how many times one the kids get kidnapped doesn’t that mean that all of them have been abducted at some point? Also what are those situations even like cause if the twins are keeping score than Elder and Youngers friends must have some pretty memorable abduction stories they have to talk about. Wonder who has it worse?
Hello again!! Omg thank you for all your kind words!!! I'm so happy to see you're still enjoying the au!! :DD
The Twins keeping score is hilarious, and I'm sure all of the Riders have gotten their fair share of snatching at some point, with the Twins keeping a nice little tally board on the wall of the clubhouse and the Hiccup brothers are in the lead by a LANDSLIDE 😂 what can they say, they're just very kidnappable ASDHKLSGK
As for who gets kidnapped more; that's a great question! They've both been kidnapped by plenty of people ever since they were kids and all through the canon. The Danger-Brutes, the Romans, the Hysterics, the Berserks (especially when Dagur became chief), and eventually the Dragon Hunters (who are the Lava Louts in this au) all capture and hold the boys prisoner/hostage/ransom multiple times. It's easy to say they probably lost count.
But when it comes to getting snatched by their personal enemies, there is a winner!
Hiccup E has a nice little group of people that want to snatch him and have snatched him multiple times, including Madguts the Murderous (taking the place of TV Alvin in R/DOB and snatching him and Toothless several times), Viggo and Ryker (both separately several times in RTTE), and Krogan (Midnight Scrum in RTTE).
Hiccup Y has a smaller roster by only one person, which includes Dagur (taking Younger instead of Gustav in RTTE), Alvin the Treacherous (the 2nd and 3rd books in R/DOB and the 8th book in RTTE), and Norbert the Nutjob (book 7 in in RTTE).
So its looking like the contest for the most kidnappings goes to Hiccup the Elder!!! 🎉🎉 Someone get that boy a prize!!

Is There a Dragon Flyer "Elite"? (RTTE Headcanon/Theory)
Tumblr media
Hello, everyone! Welcome to another HTTYD post! Sorry for the hiatus, but I'm back with another article of lore on the Dragon Flyers. Please enjoy!
This article is a continuation of my previous post on this topic (here) about dragonskin uses. Today's topic will discuss if these skins provide an established hierarchy of elitism in these Flyers (and Hunters) — particularly the Malevolent Twelve, a squadron of Flyers personally led and taught by Krogan who defeated the Dragon Riders in Season 5's episodes "Dawn of Destruction" and "Wings of War".
This is probably just me, but I have a headcanon that there's an elite among the Dragon Flyers under Krogan's command. Of course, naturally, there'll always be an elite group — "veterans," in other words — in every organization or unit. Doesn't matter if it's a small unit, a military or business organization, or anything else. The same with the Dragon Hunters and the Dragon Flyers.
In fact, Viggo even talked to Ryker about moving the "elite guard" (of Hunters or more possibly the Grimborn Family's personal guards) to prepare for the Riders' attack on their secret base in Season 4's episode "Twintuition".
Tumblr media
But back to the Flyers. I've noticed something very interesting. As you know from both the picture earlier above (the top photo), and down below, you'll see that the only Flyers that are often seen with Krogan are these guys. Particularly this guy below that's standing next to Krogan in Season 6's episode "Chain of Command".
Tumblr media
Of course, since this is DreamWorks Dragons, and since there isn't any rhyme or reason when it comes to the minion character design, I may be just imagining things and that them being near Krogan is just a coincidence.
However, as I've stated in my previous article, when it comes to the Flyers with the Zippleback skins and the gold dragonskins, respectively, they look to be more seasoned and ruthless compared to the Flyers with the poorly tanned Nightmare skins (or whatever those skins are), who often look nervous or act like they just graduated from Dragon Flyer Cadet Academy. 😂
Tumblr media
In the Season 6 episode "Darkest Night", one of Stoick's main attackers is this guy in a gold-dragon-skin outfit, and also the Flyer with a similar outfit but different dragon (compare to the Flyer above) who tag-team to grievously wound Stoick.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(You'll find him again in later photos)
It's possible that these two were part of the "Deadly Dozen" from Dawn of Destruction and Wings of War, since it's likely that Krogan or Johann would've sent some of their best Flyers to take out an important figure, especially since Johann would've known about Stoick's legendary martial prowess and would've most likely not wanted to take any chances. Taking out Stoick would've stalled Berk's capability to continue their fight against the Hunters.
in "Dawn of Destruction", this Gold-skin Flyer was able keep up with Astrid and was able to hit her if it hadn't been for Hiccup's trap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And let us not forget the infamous Mr. "Murderous Pile of Yak Dung", the Gold-skin Flyer that the Gang captured and interrogated in the Season 6 episode "Guardians of Vanaheim". Even while held captive, "Yak-dung" not only tries to recruit the Twins and use them to help him escape, but takes his chance to break free and steal the Dragon Eye Lens that Fishlegs and the Twins were turning Osvald's hut upside-down and inside-out to find, before leaving to escape the island. That is, if he hadn't fatally run into a pack of very hungry Grim Gnashers. RIP. His sacrifice will be remembered. 💀
Tumblr media
"Krogan's Best"
In the Season 5 episode "Dawn of Destruction", we are met with a squadron of 12 Flyers who commence a surprise early-morning raid on the Dragon Riders' main base and quickly neutralize the Riders and forcing them to make a tactical retreat.
Tumblr media
These Flyers are well-trained, well-armed, and well-coordinated, able to work together to out-maneuver the Riders and corner them. It's obvious that Krogan trained them in air-to-air combat for this very purpose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this very same episode, Ruffnut and Tuffnut even commented after nearly getting roasted by a passing Flyer protecting his wingman's six:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
|| Tuffnut: Hey, not for nothing, but these guys are pretty good! || || Ruffnut: They're are kicking our butts! ||
And Snotlout even warns Hiccup that:
Tumblr media
|| Those Flyers are all over the place and well-trained. ||
In "Wings of War, Part 1", after getting harassed and pursued by those Flyers from Caldera Cay (DOTW's home), Snotlout and Tuffnut say this about the Flyers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
|| Snotlout: Whoa! Oh, man, those guys are good! || || Tuffnut: I'd like to train with their trainer. ||
In the same episode, talking about that particular team of Flyers — whom I'd like to call "Krogan's Disciples" and "The Malevolent Twelve" or "The Deadly Dozen" — that were chasing the Gang from Dragon's Edge, Krogan himself told Viggo:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
||"Those are 12 of my most fearless and gifted warriors. I doubt they'll have much of an issue."||
The Flyers which made up those 12 elites are those with Zippleback and the gold-scaled dragonskins. So it's very much possible that these skins are only given to elites, of a sort.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Furthermore, most of the Flyers I saw in those shots had Nightmare dragonskin skirts (kilts? lol). The Flyers with the gold-scaled dragonskin shirts seem to have vambraces made of Gronkle dragonskin, based on the coloring. Don't quote me on that, since I could be wrong. Since these dragons are hard to kill, that would definitely make them skilled dragon slayers.
Also, speaking of which, there was at least ONE Flyer amongst the "Deadly Dozen," wearing Nightmare(?) skins and a Nadder wing skirt, and flying a green Singetail. You can find him if you squint in "Wings of War, Part 1".
I've edited the shots to make them more easier to see, but please forgive me for the blurry close-up shots. Nothing I can do to prevent that unless somebody has a better photo editing software than I do (I use Canva).
Tumblr media
You see him again, here, with the others when they hit the fog bank, which covers the length of the Inner Isles.
(That alone makes me wanna do an article that goes in depth into the reason the Inner Isles in Berk seem to have a different climate from the rest of the archipelago.)
Tumblr media
Here's a clearer shot from "Chain of Command", in S6. Considering that he's wearing the same garb and riding the same colored Singetail, he could be the same guy. However, with DreamWorks Dragons being DreamWorks Dragons, who enjoy making clones of the minions, we can only guess. 🤷‍♂️
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, though: that's a really nice getup. 👀
Flyer Leader: Krogan's Right-Hand!
In several episodes, but most memorably in "Family Matters," one notable Flyer stands out from the others: the Flyer Leader.
Tumblr media
As far as elites go, he's probably as far up as one can go outside of Krogan's position as Headmaster of the "Flyer Warthunder". He's his right-hand man. His leftenant/lieutenant. His chief subordinate.
Sadly, we don't know anything about his past or about his history with Krogan and the Flyers. 😔 (I should just go and write a fanfic and create my own lore for the Flyer Leader at this point. 🤩) However, at some point, after passing his training as a Flyer, I assume he became a direct disciple under Krogan in the same way Krogan was under Drago, and he was competent enough to be entrusted with various administrative and martial tasks and to lead warthunders out for certain missions whenever Krogan either wasn't available or couldn't be bothered to do it himself.
As seen in every episode he's been in, the Flyer Leader is shown to be a capable and reliable man to whom Krogan can leave things without much thought. This is amazing considering Krogan isn't the type who shares power with anyone but himself — as evidenced by his treatment towards Viggo and Johann. Though it probably helps that, so far as we know, the Flyer Leader isn't interested in more power and authority and is content being the Chief Lieutenant. (Though it would be pretty interesting if he is capable due to his ambition to aim higher and eventually replace Krogan as Chief of the Flyers.)
Anyway, the Flyer Leader is, aside from Krogan, the head honcho of the Flyers, and, as such, has much field command whenever Krogan's not around. He's Krogan's representative, almost (if Krogan was interested in allowing that).
The fact that Krogan was confident enough to entrust the all-important task of protecting the Singetail Rookery from any intruders once again proves, in my opinion, how adept the Flyer Leader is and how much Krogan trusts him enough to leave this vital facility to him.
And he's not stupid. Even when the Riders were able to free the Singetails captured in Deathsong amber, the Singetails, in order to protect the eggs, didn't leave as expected, unexpectedly giving the Flyer Leader extra pieces to drive the Riders into a corner. And instead of attacking them, knowing that doing so in cramped quarters and risking attacks from the Singetails due to the rookery being in the cave labyrinth, he instead orders word to be sent to Krogan about the incident and to focus everything he has onto the cave entrance and pin the Riders there until help arrives.
Little did he know that the Riders (thanks to Fishlegs impromptu problem solving) did something completely unexpected and did something that no-one could've thought that they would dare to do: lure a Cavern Crasher — an egg-eating dragon — into the Singetail Rookery and cause a disturbance that would cause a panic, allowing them to escape.
Honestly, if they hadn't done that, I think he would've been able to either capture them or kill them. The Riders themselves, before Fishlegs came with his crazy plan, were beginning to doubt they'd be able to break out before reinforcements arrived.
He is sadly left behind in a cocoon of amber. How tragic. 😔🙏🏻😂
Tumblr media
I kinda find it ironic how he lost because of plot armor. I mean, when you watch the episode, you notice that he was given everything he needed to make sure that the Rookery stayed in their hands: About 100 or so Hunter grunts to do the patrols, guard-duty, and menial tasks such as taking care of the dragons; a squadron of Dragon Flyers, assumedly all elites from his own squad (so probably between 4-8 Flyers, certainly no more than 12); no more than 5 or so catapults and ballistae; presumedly several trap devices like net ballistae or whatever; and I'm assuming he has a reserve force of men at hand to rotate shifts and replace any troops that are injured, killed, or absent. So around 100-200 men, give or take a hundred. This is a LARGE GROUP to be commanding and organizing.
I don't care what the episode showed, you'd need that much personnel, if not more, just to do patrols, manage the dragons, man the catapults and traps, etc, etc, AND have a reserve to use to rotate shifts — this is an important base, after all! It's a BIG JOB!
That being said, I could be overestimating the numbers here a bit based on my assumption that they'd need that much personnel to deal with the Riders AND any Singetails they capture and guarding the two Deathsongs and Singetail eggs as well. With that being the case, I will minus this and assume that he has, at minimum, no less than 100 men, split into companies of 50 men so that they can rotate around the clock.
Regardless of the actual numbers, the fact that he was given a lot of resources, and still lost due to an unexpected wild card the Riders played on him is just bad luck.
Personally, I don't think that Krogan would let him live for having failed his expectations and mission so thoroughly. They basically lost their source of Singetails and the island is now useless and can't be used further.
However, that being said, perhaps after hearing the explanation, and not wanting to lose a valuable fighter, he could've just let him live but demoted him, since after this, we no longer see him again, and Krogan takes over direct command in the finale episode.
Or heck, maybe the Flyer Leader deserted, knowing what his fate would be, and didn't want to be there for Krogan to find.
I'm considering the possibility that losing his Singetail Rookery didn't waylay Krogan that much, since he had a bunch of Flyers scout out and attack the Sentinals and the Riders for the next two episodes. And in the final two, it appears that Krogan came with a force no greater than 50 Flyers, including himself. I don't know if he already had this force gathered up some time before "Family Matters," or if he had another Rookery(ies) besides the one handled by the Flyer Leader.
Tumblr media
If that's the case, then it could be likely that Honcho is doing swell but demoted. But since we know that Krogan dislikes failure, much like Drago does and — like master, like apprentice — punishes his failure with DEATH.
For more on the Flyer Leader and his possible fate after "Family Matters", click the link to my old article here.
What's also interesting is that the Flyer Leader is also the one who led that certain "Elite Dozen" team that pursued the Gang in "Dawn of Destruction" and "Wings of War, Parts 1 and 2" as well.
Tumblr media
Personally, I love this character, and I personally wish he showed up in more episodes. He was quite the competent minor villain who was able to corner and pressure the Riders more than a few times. (He certainly did a better job than Savage and Vorg did.😤)
Conclusion:
So I conclude this article by stating that I believe that those 12 Flyers — and any other Flyers with the same garb — are elites due to the garb they wear and experience in combat. They're also, presumedly, among the most fanatical and ruthless of Krogan's Flyers (though the same could be said for all of the Flyers, as a whole). Plus, they were the ones who gave the Gang the most trouble with their excellent training, coordination, and teamwork.
What do you guys think? What are your thoughts on this? I'm curious.
Anyway, thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed this article! See you in the next one!
Long Live the Night!

Hey! Saw your essay about the inconsistencies. Ah ye. When contrasting the Httyd movies with the shows, I like to not take it all that seriously. "But the shows are canon!!!!!" the shows are a beautiful and meaningful AU of the movies and vice versa; I've fared wonderfully treating them like that. Keeping the good parts for inspo and tossing the rest tbh.
E.g. I'm keeping Dagur and Viggo and the Fireworms for canon. Maybe there was an outpost called Dragon's Edge once, but I like to think to myself that Hiccup merely used it as a weekend base camp / storehouse for further explorations rather than actually living there for extended periods of time. He had to make all his Httyd2 improvements on Berk somehow within those five years lol. He would have had to abandon Dragon's Edge wayyy earlier to be able to have a constant presence on his home island that would earn him the village's support and Stoick's eye regarding Chieftainship. I'm definitely keeping the volcano eruption though. Also the Buffalord, the amazing Season 4 Hiccstrid kiss, the Night Terrors and Chicken. And of course the gang becoming better friends.
...On the other hand I'm definitely treating Heather, Mala, the Wingmaidens and all the dragons I don't personally like as vivid fever dreams lol. I'm also ignoring the comics. Had Hiccup truly encountered Viggo and gone through all of that Rtte character development canonically, he wouldn't have acted as naive as he did in Httyd2... Viggo already taught him better than that.
Those are just my two cents, they are also helping me embrace such things as Homecoming etc.
If you could build your canon however you liked, what would you keep? :)
I don't know if you meant it like this but I do want to clarify that I adore the first 2 movies, GotNF, LotB, RoB, DoB, and RttE. And I like elements of Httyd 3 and Homecoming, but not them in general.
(I have no intention of reading the comics - they don't interest me).
Criticising stuff I like, and pulling it apart to see how it ticks is literally my biggest hobby, so, no problems enjoying it there.
I would honestly keep most of it, so here's a list of some of what I'd remove instead:
The inconsistencies between httyd 1 ending and RoB opening - mostly to do with the dragons' integration into Berk and the new infrastructure for the dragons.
Stoick's inconsistent and easily swayed opinion on the dragons - he would never allow them to be banished from Berk unless he was physically forced to. They saved Hiccup's life, they pretty much are Hiccup's life, and he would never dishonour Valka's memory by going against her ideals (esp since her son basically redeemed her weirdness by proving her right 15 years later).
Gothi's role - she shouldn't be the only healer on Berk, she shouldn't even be a healer. They made new characters for Mulch, Bucket, Mildew, Johann, Silent Sven, Alvin, Savage, Dagur and Heather (and most of those are males) so just kick one of those out and build a new healer for Berk (bonus points if its a relation of one of the Riders e.g. a Thorston).
Johann's villain arc - I've talked about this a lot already so I won't repeat myself but this was an atrocious direction to take.
Viggo's redemption happening off screen
Dagur's redemption happening off screen
the Hunters having exactly the same ships as Drago (who comes from outside the archipelago & is designed with a different aesthetic than the vikings)
inconsistencies with the Hunter's Lore
Ryker being forgotten - the brother of ur main villain???? hello?
Krogan being so inconsistent...
Where are the women warriors???
Defenders of the Wing Lore Inconsistencies
Mala's whole personality - during the trial episode and marriage episodes especially
nearly every woman has a love interest
Dagur x Mala (not necessarily the ship - fandom adds depth to it tbh - but just how the show itself handles it)
Throk x Ruffnut (it's fine its just boring and doesn't add anything)
Gruffnut. the man annoys me - his design is lazy, his voice is annoying, he has an intruiging opportunity to add depth to the thorstons but is never utilised
Agnut. same as above
Astrid being in love with Hiccup but only in a conventional "im a woman and I will get jealous at any opportunity" kind of way
Gustav's lack of character development
the A team should not include those characters. Bucket and Mulch are farmers WHAT are they doing here. Gothi is old as fuck and she's got important shit to be doing (like apparently being the ONLY healer on Berk - srsly what r u gonna do when she dies?). Spitelout is on the Berk Council and is one of the main leaders of their military, why would he want to be bossed around by a 19 yro. the only one who makes sense is Gustav.
why does Astrid have to build the A team at all?? shouldn't Stoick or the entire military force of Berk teach themselves to use dragons to fight off invaders????
Astrid being so inconsistent with her suspicions and cautions.
Astrid randomly deciding to be Mother to dragons like Garf and throwing away all her military training and paranoia to bring said dragons on actual military operations??? like just say you needed a conflict and picked The Woman to throw under the bus.
Heather's (and Oswald's) mild backstory inconsistency.
Heather being a femme fatale.
Posing for the camera
The Wingmaidens - they're an obvious scramble to add female characters but they fall short on believability and worldbuilding.
The Bewilderbeast beneath Beserker Island. I don't like how... fucky.. this makes the plot. We didn't need this, we could have just ended on Johann & Krogan heading towards Valka's mountain, which could explain why Hiccup was still exploring the archipelago in httyd 2. then we could have done a post-credits-esque scene with Valka decimating Johann and Krogan. boom, vibes preserved, plotholes kind of prevented.
ok theres probably a lot more but this was all i could think of. Ik it looks like a lot but most of it is just tweaking canon. the majority of RoB, DoB, and RttE are wonderful. otherwise I wouldn't give half of a shit about them.

lowkey in need of a hurt/comfort fic of the dragon riders gang post midnight scrum, all of them seeing hiccup with broken bones and cuts and bruises in places that shouldn’t be there
astrid getting frustrated and a little angry with him after hiccup keeps insisting that it’s not as awful as it looks and no hiccup, it really is but softening immediately when tending to his wounds
fishlegs just being absolutely horrified about the whole thing that he can’t even talk or offer his usual words of comfort bc what do you mean krogan dragged you around in chains so he just holds the twins’ hands to ground himself
snotlout berating hiccup and telling him that he’s an absolute moron for letting it get this bad but deep inside feeling a crippling amount of guilt for not being able to find and protect him sooner and proceeds to assist astrid
ruffnut and tuffnut terrified to their souls bc (though not the first time) they’re reminded that hiccup’s not as invincible as they make him out to be, the rare instance where their worry overshadows their usual ability to ease tension with lighthearted jokes so they’re just both uncharacteristically silent

Night Fury!Krogan redesign
Hi welcome to the post!! Anyways. I decided to redesign him. More of a story now too.
Hiccup only discovers Krogan after Krogan has been separated from the flock for a few monrhs, getting himself taken into the custody of dragon hunters after suspicions of Krogan’s disappearance and a subsequent appearance of a night fury that has scars that match up nearly identical ally with the man. (And the inquiry to Drago about him having a night fury branded with his mark, which was a resounding “no… why?” Essentially therefore confirming the potential status of the dragon as being Krogan. That… and the dragon replies to the name in question when one tried it out (*coughs at Viggo who’s literally the only person who can get close to the Fury without being bitten.)
During the first encounter, it is in the skies, with Viggo having taken an (entirely and completely uncertain) perch upon Krogan’s back. Turns out Krogan has just a bit of malice towards Toothless for whatever reason because it was litterally an on sight attack that Krogan yoinked toothless with. Viggo took Krogan’s place since. They’re still down a leader for the dragon flyers considering Krogan. Does not speak human no matter how hard he tries (it is amusing itself to hear him muttering what is in essentiacality gibberish as he tries to speak to Viggo… but his vocal chords REALLY are not made to speak.
He can commune with other dragons… fine enough. When Hiccup and Toothless are captured in the episode that would be triple cross, Krogan nearly rips Toothless’s wing off when capturing the other dragon. (Viggo really wishes he could understand what it is with Krogan and other Night Furies, because Toothless is TERRIFIED of Krogan’s simple presence. Though Krogan has seemed to back off with his aggression towards Toothless, Viggo is unsure of the stem of the aggression, besides the new scars, bite marks and wounds they had found Krogan with. Maybe there was a flock that took Krogan in and since he was in the lowest pecking order he was ruthlessly picked on and tormented?)
Viggo just understands that it might be a trauma response. They manage to make it through Triple Cross, Krogan earning a place among the dragon riders with Viggo at his side. Krogan is entirely uninterested in everyone and everything except for Viggo, though he starts warming up a bit to Snotlout, surprisingly enough. Viggo doesn’t understand why, but maybe it’s because Snotlout likes sharing chunks of the mangoes he occasionally buys with Krogan. (Krogan likes mangoes.)
For further reference… here is Krogan next to toothless. Toothless is just under half Krogan’s size and weight, which is why Krogan can throw him around so easily.

Have a rtte character named Nels Doryu who I haven't posted much about (cause he's technically reality shifted me and I feel a little shy about him) but he's just. Fucking unhinged to be honest.
Like I have it all planned out that he's kind of a neutral party, but also not really. He understands Viggo has a business to run and will even help out the hunter's with supplies to maintain a sort of truce, but he'll also help out the riders to a certain extent. His agreement with Viggo is basically "don't touch my dragons and I won't kill you and I'll even get you some supplies every now and then."
He's wild and has little to no sense of morality. He'll kill a person for any reason without hesitation. He'll let the pack be dragons and completely tear an enemy apart. He won't hold them back like Hiccup does. If they jump to defend him from an opponent and the way they go about that is ripping the persons head from their shoulders, he'll stand by and watch it happen without even flinching.
His whole lore is that he was separated from his tribe at a young age and found by a pack of wild night fury's (because yes I'm cringe and I want more night fury's in the httyd world get over it), the queen of which, who had been separated from her own hatchling recently, sort of took him in to deal with her own grief. Since then he's fully become a part of the pack.
Also yes this is also a 'most people live' au. Those 'most people' being Ryker, Viggo, and Krogan because god damn it I WANT MY BOYS. I WANT THEM TO THRIVE AND BE HAPPY. I WANT VIGGO TO BE TAKEN ON A BAREBACK DRAGON RIDE AND RYKER AND VIGGO TO FIX THEIR FRACTURING RELATIONSHIP AND KROGAN TO ESCAPE DRAGO. LET ME SEE THEM HAPPY.
Sorry for the rambling and info dump I just wanted to get that out of my brain before I explode

I just realized how big of an idiot Drago is.
So, we all know that Krogan worked for Drago, he was his protege, but when Krogan failed him he had him murdered.
Which was a huge mistake on his part.
Because if I interpret the scene correctly Krogan wasn’t actually given any time to explain his side of the story before he was killed. Drago had no idea what Krogan had really been doing other than looking for the king of dragons, he didn’t know that Krogan had met the riders and deemed them a threat, but before he could be warned about then, about Berk, he had him killed.

Include side characters and allies too because that's what I'm thinking about. Like Mala, of course, hates Viggo and Ryker. I feel like Stoick hates Trader Johann a bit more than Viggo and Krogan just because he is a traitor.
