Her Sunday dinners were for the entire family, so she was feeding an army of hungry Italians.” He moved back to the mixing bowl. “Okay, executive decision time, we’re going with 9 cups, I want everyone to take home leftovers.“ “Sound goo-AHA” Steve didn’t glance away from the mixer at the outburst. “Did you finally find the measuring spoons?” “I’m telling you, they don’t exist! But behold my liege:” Eddie brandished the rolling pin. “Your mighty weapon to slay this culinary dragon!” Steve was now preoccupied kneading the dough, his arm muscles flexing distractingly. “Can’t use that. Nona goes out of her way to say you have to roll it out by hand. And before you ask,” he said, holding up a hand at Eddie’s open mouth, “no, I don’t know why she had a grudge against spoons either. Just mix the filling with your fingers okay? It’s not like you mind getting dirty.” Eddie smirked. “No, I certainly don’t.” Draping himself over Steve’s back, he placed a kiss on his neck. “In fact I could show you how much I don’t mind right now.” Steve shook off his now flour-streaked koala of a boyfriend. “You know Robin’s rule, no sex in the kitchen. But,” he said, with a smirk of his own, “if we put this in the oven before 2 we probably have enough time to shower together.” “Oh you are so on, Harrington.” Eddie dashed over to the counter and began furiously chopping up chocolate. And if Robin came home to find a red-faced Steve cutting burnt edges off the baci di dama while Eddie mopped up the bathroom of a tiny amount of excess water, well, that was nobody’s business but theirs.

"Aren't you a little old for pin the tail on the donkey?" Robin mockingly impersonates Steve from about two hours and many cups of punch earlier.

"Shut up! I'm gonna show you shitbirds how this is done, and no amount of you trying to psyche me out is going to make a difference," Steve said confidently, "I've got this."

"'Course you do, Steve,' Dustin said in patronising support as he helped spin a blindfolded Steve around and let him go.

With one sense shut off, Steve carefully utilises his others to understand where he is. He could hear the music from the stereo blaring, but it was so loud it was hard for that to give him a sense of direction. He listened a little more carefully and heard a crunch of popcorn that he knew for sure was Robin.

He turned until Robin was where she should be for him to be facing the picture on the back of the door.

Dustin's new campaign party, whatever that meant, had been a crowded affair. A bunch of people from this new club he was in and some other collection of nerds from camps or other clubs were here, too. Steve had offered up his house to prevent Mrs Henderson from getting involved.

But Steve had spotted one of the kids spike the punch, immediately confiscated it, and escaped the Nerdfest with Robin to the game's garage, which was abandoned in favour of dragons, Star Trek, and an Atari.

Steve heard a click of the door handle, "HEY! No cheating. You move that thing. Your ass is grass!"

With the extra direction information, Steve headed toward it and reached out a hand quickly to hit something hard. He smiled, having found the door.

Weird, he thought the poster was paper, but it felt like fabric. Fancy.

Steve trailed his fingers around the fabric to try and figure out where to pin the tail, much to the amusement of Dustin and Robin.

"Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. You won't be laughing so hard when I'm declared the pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey king," Steve scoffed.

The laugh appeared from somewhere that made his stomach drop. Someone was right in front of him.

Steve quickly ripped off the blindfold and found his hand trailing over the t-shirt of a blushing but very smug-looking Eddie Munson.

388. Douglas Niles - DL6: Dragons of Ice (1985)

After a short hiatus separating the first and second volume of the Dragonlance modules, we get the first module which came out in 1985. Coming out a month after the Dragons of Winter Night novel, this pretty much coincides with the first section of that novel. By this time the novels had overtaken the modules in the publication schedule, and this could create spoiler problems if you had a party of players who were also avid readers.

So what we get here is the party arriving in Tarsis the Beautiful, a mythical ancient port city, which is by now not a port at all as the sea has retreated as a consequence of the Cataclysm that happened some centuries earlier and crashed a meteor in the ocean on the city of Istar creating a huger hole and whirlpool that pulled the water in and made the seas retreat from the coast of Tarsis. 

Our party arrives with the objective of obtaining a boat out, and in the meanwhile meet Alhana Starbreeze of the Qualinesti elves. As usual, and this is what made the Dragonlance modules unique, there's a really fun and engrossing story here where the players are right at the centre of the tale. The strong point of the module being the story is what makes the possibility of spoilage through the novels particularly unfortunate, if I was a DM I would have been a bit miffed by this.

Explorers!Hero (or multi!hero) who is usually extremely nice, but Team Skull are still up to their old tricks. Even after they saved the world with Partner and came back from non-existence, those three are still up to no good. Sooooooo—the hero is about this || close to snapping when they happen to remember Zubat being left behind in Apple Woods.

Like a Sharpedo they smell blood in that water.

It takes first writing out individual letters to Team Skull in different styles, they have picked up a skill like this from teaching non-guild teammates how to write. The hero pretends to be a huge fan of the trio that really wanted to send their favorite Pokémon some help. Hero pretends to spell like a really young kid—a weedle they sign off as. The “fan” basically gushes and gushes, until they mention how they wonder the noxious gas combo would work in a dungeon. Fan begs Team Skull to try their hand at *insert dungeon* which Hero knows has a lot of tough non-smelling Pokémon.

“Fan” included reviver (reviser) seeds, a joy (doom) seed, and heal (sleep) seeds in their letter to help! …They even put like 388 Poké in as the “request” reward thing. Which isn’t a lot in retrospect, but at least sweetens the deal for Team Skull. While this kid heaped on praise for the other two, they kinda had some questions about Zubats role on the team. He got knocked out by the team’s famous combo, right? Zubat goes to meet the “fan” while the other two try the dungeon. Obviously, he’s a little creeped out when he finds Hero in the “fan’s” place.

Hero has a wide smile, inviting him to sit/lay down to chat for a bit! After all—they ordered Zubat his favorite drink. (The former human had to ask Spinda who normally doesn’t give this information.) He says he feels a bit uncomfortable even if it’s just the wimpy partner’s friend. Hero says that’s fine. They don’t want to make him feel trapped, such a shame that can’t talk shop though. They mean… doesn’t Zubat hate being shunted to the side like this? The hero pretends to not know about the letters, pretends to not be the fan.

They gradually get Zubat to sit down and just casually point out the Pokémon’s weaknesses repeatedly doing innocently backhanded comments. “Oh sure, you can’t see but I am sure that high-pitched echo location makes you aware of everything. Not like anyone will ignore it”, “Really I got lucky to be turned into the Pokémon I am, I could have gotten stuck in a physically weaker body… sort of your situation of being a glass cannon for reference”, and “it must suck that your team’s signature left you knocked out too. If me and partner had been a wild/criminal, winces that could’ve gotten ugly.”

They keep playing into his insecurities, then off-hand says, “You know it’s really easy to be just plain old cruel. Say something mean, it’ll stick with a Mon. Steal from them? They remember you if you let them see what you are. Leave a less experienced team forced to go through no-dinner after working a long day? We were bitter. Anyone can do that, but making it personal? Oh. Oh that sticks so much better!”

“I could have hypothetically slipped a stun, warp, and blast seed into your drink to make you a random bomb—” Zubat spits it out “—but I didn’t. Really, that would have the chance to hurt someone else and isn’t the most personal thing. Hypothetically, I could have simply called in a few favors and had you three… fainted. Permanently. Or do it myself. Truly, there are quite a few ways I could justify it. I know the freaking Dragon Gods of Space and Time. No one would be able to find what remained of you or them, if I was truly that unhinged.”

What kind of psycho discusses this in front of who they want to—

“Again if I genuinely wanted to. You three are beyond annoying and petty bullies, but death? Oh no. That would be too permanent for my taste. Also, not a Pokémon remember unless you didn’t hear—I’m human no matter what my form is and the instincts I have so I still think like one. We tend to have these things called ‘intrusive thoughts’. It’s sort of thoughts about what we could do in spite of the consequences. Like,” Hero pulls Zubat close to whisper, “being stuck in a small room with a crying baby Whismur who won’t stop crying. Sure, it’s a baby it doesn’t know better. But, after a certain point you would just want to smash it against the wall to get it to stop for Arceus sake…!”

“So with all due respect, either keep the schemes civil without endangering anyone or pick a new term of employment. Or else I will let the intrusive thoughts win. Understand?” Their reputation be damned, they are in a world of super-powered animals who fight daily. The intrusive thoughts have only gotten stronger.

402. Douglas Niles and Steve Winter - Battlesystem (1985)

Well, in a project like this there will always be some products that fall by the wayside, and that is the case with the Battlesystem set that we are covering here. I should have noticed when I covered Dragons of Ice (#388) that it was already using Battlesystem stuff in one of the sections, but I didn't... so this should have been reviewed before Dragons of Ice (it came out a couple of months earlier). However, now that there is a bunch of Battlesystem stuff coming up the pipeline, I remembered that I forgot! So here it is!

What is Battlesystem I hear you asking? Basically it's what the name says, a system to integrate large scale battles into (Advanced) Dungeons & Dragons, going back to the game's origins in tabletop wargames, this parallel system shows up to make players able to control large armies on the field in the context of a TTRPG, bringing a bit of that Warhammer goodness to D&D. 

It's no coincidence that this system is showing up at the same time as Dragonlance's story is advancing. Dragonlance is set in a world at war and where epic battles are very much a part of its story, the first instances for the use of Battlesystem are precisely Dragonlance modules, such as DL6: Dragons of Ice and the upcoming DL8: Dragons of War, some Battlesystem dedicated modules set in other worlds are also upcoming. Bundled with this set are some other Dragonlance battles that can be inserted retroactively in earlier modules (such as DL2) as well as an art book teaching you how to paint miniatures written by Steve Winter.
