I love Greed and other characters with big noses/unique nose shapes in fullmetal alchemist... I myself have a very angular and large nose for my head size so seeing one on sexy or well-loved characters is such a confidence boost

Some characters off the top of my head: Dolcetto, Roa, Bido, Darius, Heinkel, Jerso, Zampano, Pinako, Hohenheim/Father, Dr. Knox, Dr. Marcoh, Ling (its not very large but its angled down a bit!), Buccaneer, Maj. Armstrong, Sig Curtis, Breda, and more that I've definitely forgotten.

I do wish there was more variation in the Nose Department on the female characters but Arakawa is so good at writing them that I can forgive that. To cope I like to imagine Lust with a straighter and stronger one so she looks a bit more like Greed

Something that will never not astound me about Full Metal Alchemist is just how tight the story is. Every scene and every character serves the story, which in turn serves the characters. There's no fluff, no detours, and no excess in cast, plot, or exposition

This comes into hyperfocus in the lead up to and on the Promised Day. Every character we've seen thus far, be they main, side, or support, has a role to play and their own reason for doing so. Each has a hand in saving the world

Even Yoki, the bumbling, self-serving comic relief, gets a moment in the spotlight when he hits Pride with a car to save Marcoh, Heinkel, and Alphonse. The best part? Despite it being a genuinely comedic moment in the midst of devestation, it doesn't destroy the tone. Not only has Yoki been a consistently silly character, but it's done in a way that serves the plot without overtaking it for the bit. That's such an incredibly tight line to walk and Arakawa walks it beautifully

Hard to say any of that about RWBY. It's extremely obvious the writers are flying by the seat of their pants towards a vast sea of nothing. That's why their characters and themes and general everything seems scattered and disconnected. Because it is. They don't know where they're going or even where they've been, so nothing is ever going to line up the way a proper story should

RWBY's story never serves the characters the way it should, and the writers are willing to break characters to force them into a role they were never meant to be in. Look no further than Weiss in V9, assigned comedic relief despite recent events, or Yang's weirdass optimism inside the whale during V8. These instances are so jarring because these characters have not been silly or optimistic since Beacon fell, and they're in the show to just... be there. Neither V8 nor V9 benefitted from these scenes, and you can pluck them out with no consequences. Hell, there'd be an improvement through lack of bathos

While both FMA and RWBY are large scale action stories, only one actually knows how to handle it

I’ve seen a lotta folks talking abt how roy getting his vision back post canon doesn’t make sense, and I personally do like the idea of him staying blind

However!

Most people seem to be saying that his eyes were healed by using the philosopher’s stone, same way havoc was healed so he could walk again

And if im remembering correctly, that’s wrong

I always thought that marcoh went through the gate via using the stone as the toll, and got Roy’s eyes back the same way al got ed’s arm back

Because roy specifically says “there’s someone else who needs it first” in reference to havoc, and the stone would be gone after marcoh came back through the gate, right?

Hence the “before”

Td;dr: Roy’s eyes weren’t healed with the stone, marcoh gave the stone to Truth in exchange for Roy’s sight

He was really hoping that Ling was full of shit.

Instead he finds a dozen references to creatures that could be homunculi, or some really fucked up chimeras, and a copy of Dr. Marcoh's cookbook.

The bastard is in town for one day and now Ed has homework. Great.

He checks out a stack of books that he thinks he'll need for reference and outright steals the cookbook because if it is what he thinks it is, then he doesn't want his name attached to it.

He returns to the dorm and drops the stack of books on the floor then pulls out the cookbook with a flourish. Al is suitably intrigued while Ling and Mei's faces are blank. Typical.

For some reason, alkahestry texts are almost never heavily coded and full of misdirection and metaphors. Probably because none of it is outlawed thanks to the lack of ability to break the laws of the universe.

"Time to earn your keep," he says cheerfully. "How's your calligraphy?"

"Impeccable," Ling says.

Mei makes a so-so gesture.

"Good enough," he says, "you're going to need to copy this down for us, word for word, on loose leaf pages."

"So you found something about homunculi?" he asks eagerly as Mei thumbs through the cookbook.

He shrugs, because there's no reason to make anything easy for Ling if he doesn't have to. "One way to find out."

Random question of the week, which State Alchemist is a commissioned officer and which isn't?

I haven't seen anything that outright tells us this information, in either the anime, the anime, or guides, but I think there's a way to tell... by how they dress and how they're addressed.

We know for sure that Roy Mustang, Alex Armstrong, and Basque Grand are commissioned officers (aka they went through the officers academy). We also know for sure that Edward Elric, and Shou Tucker aren't commissioned officers.

Ed and Shou Tucker are never called Major, while Mustang, Armstrong, and Grand are always addressed by their rank. We also never see Ed or Shou Tucker in uniform, while it's rare to see Mustang, Armstrong, and Grand out of it (usually when off work or undercover).

From the above we can get the following information:

The commissioned State Alchemists always wear the uniform when on the clock. Civilian State Alchemists don't.

The commissioned State Alchemists are addressed by rank. The civilian state alchemists are addressed by title or name.

From this information we can guess the status of the other State Alchemists:

Tim Marcoh: Civilian. He's ALWAYS addressed as Dr. Marcoh or by his State Alchemist title. Not once in Ishval is he called Major Marcoh. He does wear the uniform when in Ishval but it seems this is only a requirement when deployed in war. See Comanche.

Giolio Comanche: Civilian. He's also never addressed as Major. In fact Hughes refers to him as old man Comanche during Ishval. He's also seen wearing civilian clothes when fighting Scar.

Solf J. Kimblee: commissioned officer later civilian. This is the most interesting case and the one that made me think of this. Unlike Marcoh and Comanche he was addressed as Major Kimblee during Ishval. But once he's released from prison we see him in civilian clothes and he's addressed as Mr Kimble or Crimson Lotus. I believe he went through the academy but lost his commission during his Court Martial after Ishval. However, Roy Mustang points out that Kimblee is still a State Alchemist, even if he's in prison. So while he was stripped of his military commission (by the Court Martial Office), Bradley, who is the only one with the authority to appoint and dismiss State Alchemists, decided not to revoke his State Alchemist title.

Quite interesting... And we know why he did that once Envy releases Kimblee to hunt Scar down. They were definitely saving him for a crisis.

Somewhere between here Kimblee needs to take winry hostage (reads a lot of xerxes texts in the elric house) – winry tries to beat him with her wrench – gets a hit in before riza apprehends her

Chapter 24 – some reason for why the elrics make it to briggs before KIMBLEE and RIZA (<3) do / fight of Sloth

Chapter 25 – they go in sloths' tunnel and edward finally realises that holy shit kimblee was right they're making some nation wide transmutation circle – (whole crimson crest talk about briggs, Edward says lets go after scar first , winry goes along with them, winry gets ‘kidnapped’ by scar) / Briggs, Raven v Olivier situation  / Kimblee, Edward baschool
