Melissa Manchester - Midnight Blue / I Got Eyes

I don't know these songs at all. They're pretty, and I think "I Got Eyes" has an interesting melody. "Midnight Blue has become kind of fuzzy, which is a shame because it sounds like a really nice song.

Barry Manilow - Mandy / Something's Coming Up

"Mandy" is the perfect bait for sentimental suckers, and it would take a lot of unwarranted effort to pretend I don't like it. It is a little worn out-sounding, but I definitely expected that. I'm not familiar with "Something's Coming Up," but I think it's pretty interesting. I definitely like the chorus.

Manitoba featuring Joe Dowen - Something in You / You'll Never Get Back

These guys don't seem to have a Wikipedia page and Spotify is inconclusive, but I managed to nail down which side was "A" on Discogs. Anyway, rock n' roll! Side-A is full of vim and vigor, and fuzz, alas. "You'll Never Get Back" is a slower, organ based track, which might have been more impressive with better production. Both songs are written by Dowen, who also doesn't have a Wikipedia page, and I am definitely curious.

The Marmalade - Reflections of My Life / Rollin' My Thing

I really dig the bass on this one. I wouldn't call the sound pristine, but it is well-recorded and holding up well. The song itself is also pretty good, very dignified. The B-Side isn't much, but it's groovy, and a little funny.

The Marmalade - Rainbow / The Ballad of Cherry Flavar

The two sides here are actually pretty similar, they're both wistful tunes that leave a nice impression. I think I like the B-Side a little more. Inconclusive as to whether "Flavar" is intentionally misspelled. Both sides are in pretty good shape.

Mashmakhan - As the Years Go By / Days When We Are Free

I'm starting to wonder where my mom developed a taste for all these Canadian rock bands I've never heard of. Anyway, "As the Years Go By" is genuinely a freaky little tune, and I like it too. That organ goes hard! If anything, "Days When We Are Free" is even more uptempo, but not as catchy. Never mind, there was a huge tempo change at the bridge. Wild! Canadian rock bands, I guess.

Hugh Masekela - Grazing the Grass / Bajabula Bonke

What's this, jazz? Jazz-pop? You could have genuine hits with horns in the '60s, and that's why we are not living in a golden age today. That horn out in front is loud and spectacular. As for "Bajabula Bonke," it sounds beautiful and I wish I could find the words for it handily. It's slightly less worn down from the A-Side, but really, we expect that at this point.

2023 Summary of Art!

Regardless if I have diversity in my post, it’s a lil misleading. This was the year of comfort characters and silly short animations. It’s been a while since Derek has had a chokehold on me but damn I could not stop drawing him this year. The animations definitely didn’t help. I’ve got so many more animations in store, both with Derek and with other characters.

Can’t wait to get to those projects next year!
