I'm tired of people saying the makeup trend rn is to look "wet" it's not just wetness if you show up greasy in a normal way that won't cut the mustard. the highlight trend which has been going on for like 15 years now is to highlight specific areas of the face and then remove specular highlights from other areas in order to manipulate the appearance of the facial topography and it's actually very interesting to observe the implicit aesthetic goals of the exercise and the various methods of achieving them.

I think my favorite method I learned years ago was the Korean soap opera technique which was a basic but beautiful base application of standard prettifying makeup (what eventually evolved into the douyin look but at the time was referred to as selca or ulzzang) and then highlighting just the highest natural elevations of bridge of the nose, the chin, the cheekbones, and the inner corners of the eye with clear lip gloss or balm patted on sparingly. using the balm/gloss instead of the standard glittery or metallic or iridescent product makes the look natural and "just got out of the shower" instead of "I'm wearing highlighting makeup". I mean if you prefer a natural look for the day. metallic and glitter, nothing wrong with them, they're just less natural looking than a balm or gloss highlight

I've tried it and it works very well. you just powder the intermediate areas as needed. lip balm is less shiny than gloss but it won't trap loose hair strands as much if you're wearing your hair down
