Nowhere were the principles of marketplace newspapering carried out with more enthusiasm--and met with more unhappiness--than at the [London, Ontario] Free Press, where editors, armed with surveys of their readership, virtually overnight revamped the newspaper into a local version of USA Today that follows "a McPaper formula, processing bite-sized chunks of easily digestible news that sell well," as Mark Richardson put it in the Ryerson Review of Journalism. In a protest piece, [former Free Press city editor Don] Gibb wrote in Content magazine that the newspaper had fallen under the "formula pap" of "MBA journalism" where "profit is the driving force over quality journalism." He said surveys dictate what stories the newspaper will run, graphics and new formats are developed by consultants, and reporters are told by editors what their stories should say before they write them. "Today, there is a feeling of despair in the [Free Press] newsroom," Gibb wrote. "It has been sapped of enthusiasm, initiative and creativity because the reporters feel they have little or no control over what they do." Editor Philip McLeod said that, despite similarities, the redesigned newspaper isn't an imitation of USA Today, but he admitted that its emphasis is on readability rather than on the writing in the newspaper. "Good writing often gets in the way of other things you're trying to do," McLeod said. Critics of MBA-style journalism say they see a clear pattern when the marketers gain control of a newspaper. Not only does the substance of the newspaper become secondary to the planning, prettyfying, and promoting of the newspaper, but newspaper executives often must institute tough newsroom management systems in order to bring along newsworkers reluctant to buy into the philosophy of market-oriented journalism. Many of those journalists speak with great passion--and much disillusionment--about what is happening to the newspaper business. "If ten, fifteen years ago, you told someone in a newsroom, 'This is our product,' they would have looked at you like you were nuts," says a former Hartford Courant reporter quoted in Andrew Kerig's Spiked. "Products were shoes. But now newspapers are thought of as products, marketed as products. It's a different philosophy. And when you change the shape of an industry like that, you're going to have terrible discontent--legitimate discontent--among the people who have been in it."

David Bowie Box Set Review: Divine Symmetry: The Journey to Hunky Dory
(Rhino)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
It’s shocking to hear David Bowie sing, “Put a bullet in my brain / and I make all the papers” on a song titled “Tired of My Life”, the first track from his new box set Divine Symmetry. All exaggeration aside, consider where he was in 1971. Despite his clear artistic brilliance, he hadn’t had a commercial hit since “Space Oddity”. Perhaps he thought he was destined to be a one-hit wonder. When playing the song live at Friars Aylesbury in 1971, he called it the one “that we get over with as soon as possible.” (Of course, when he sang the words, “Ground control to Major Tom,” the audience erupted.) He was a new father. He was cooped up in a San Francisco hotel room on his first U.S. trip, thinking he had just met Lou Reed of The Velvet Underground when he had really met Doug Yule. Nonetheless, he recorded himself singing “Waiting for the Man”; like a lost folk recording, it shows Bowie adopting a Reed-like vocal inflection, just as he learned it, his guitars atonal, the song being passed from one generation to the next.
There’s not really a direct line from The Velvet Underground to Hunky Dory, but you can sense Bowie was uneasy, determined to do something new and unexpected if not completely shed what he had done up to the point. Divine Symmetry (subtitled The Journey to Hunky Dory) tells the story of Bowie’s first masterpiece, from its early demo versions, composed on piano as opposed to guitar, and his appearances on BBC Radio fleshing out the tunes, to alternate mixes and versions of singles and songs from the album. His early experiments, whether they eventually made Hunky Dory or not, foreshadow the shapeshifter we now know as one of the greatest artists ever. The theatrical piano stomp of “How Lucky You Are” (also known as “Miss Peculiar”) was originally offered to Tom Jones, to give you an idea of Bowie’s songwriting at the time and how it was viewed as worthy of an established, mainstream pop sex symbol. The melancholy vocal performance and guitar strums of “Shadow Man” and “Looking for a Friend” would eventually be recorded for Ziggy Stardust. “King of the City”’s bluesy guitar licks mirror the glammy, Stones-inspired stomps of Aladdin Sane. Refrains from “Tired of My Life” eventually showed up on “It’s No Game (No. 1)” from Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), a different decade entirely. And for what it’s worth, Bowie looks back when he demos “Song for Bob Dylan”. Though he’d say at Friars that the song is about Dylan rather than poking fun at him, the squeaky harmonica of the demo is undoubtedly tongue-in-cheek.
At the time time Bowie appeared on the BBC, the Hunky Dory songs still weren’t truly fully formed. On the recording, John Peel introduces guitarist Mark Carr-Pritchard as part of the band Arnold Corns, who had just recorded a song called “Moonage Daydream”. Mick Ronson and Mick Woodmansey were still part of Ronno. In other words, Bowie’s backing band, in their various incarnations, were still viewed as their own entities, with the potential to break out in popularity alongside Bowie as opposed to the footnote that we now know they are. Had Hunky Dory already been released, it might be a different story, but Bowie and company were still figuring things out. George Underwood takes lead vocals on “Song For Bob Dylan”, Dana Gillespie on “Andy Warhol”. “Kooks” features the same Neil Young-inspired acoustic melancholy it would eventually sport, though Bowie sounds especially sunken when he sings, “Don’t pick fights with the bullies or the cads / ‘Cause I’m not much cop at punching other people’s dads.” The most confident performance of the Peel set was “The Supermen” from the already released The Man Who Sold The World, a much more chugging version than the studio version, Bowie’s vocals booming like they do on the demos for “Life on Mars?” and “Changes”, but with much richer instrumentation behind him.
The one constant throughout Divine Symmetry, one that can rise above the box set’s faults, is indeed Bowie’s voice, whether on a live version of a pre-release “It Ain’t Easy”, a demo of “Bombers”, or the Bob Harris BBC Radio session version of “Oh! You Pretty Things”, just Bowie and Ronson. Of course, you can pick bones: Are the mono and stereo versions of the Peel sessions really necessary? Do we need all these recordings of Jacques Brel’s “Amsterdam”, Bowie desperately paying tribute to the very man who purportedly used a gay slur towards Bowie himself? Could we have left out the recordings from Friars that suffered from sound quality and feedback issues, inevitable since it was recorded to 2-track tape? Yes, of course, but we should be so lucky to continue to unearth vocal artifacts from a brilliant artist who left us too soon.
Ultimately, and amazingly, the highest highs on Divine Symmetry come from the alternate mixes, rare for a box set. Ken Scott’s BOWPROMO Mixes enhance the sharp, wincing guitars on “Eight Line Poem”, the lush strings and rounded bass notes of “Kooks”, and Ronson’s dual electric guitar lines on “Queen Bitch”. “Changes” struts more prominent horns, an essential saxophone solo towards the end. And the original ending version of “Life on Mars?” is flat-out hilarious; Scott recently described in an interview with Record Collector the story, involving the master take and a phone ringing in the studio. Like David Bowie himself, his songs will continue to change identity for years to come.

Daniel Villarreal at LGBTQ Nation:
Kamala Harris describes her “fury” when the Supreme Court revoked abortion rights in powerful convo on hit podcast Call Me Daddy. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the recently overturned Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that established abortion rights nationwide, Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris spoke this weekend on the women’s empowerment podcast Call Her Daddy with host Alex Cooper. Cooper is the highest-paid female podcaster on the Spotify streaming platform, and her show has an estimated 5 million weekly listeners. “This is a moment for all of us to understand our power as an extension of our rights, and to join together in sisterhood and fellowship among all people, regardless of gender, to speak up,” Harris said after Cooper’s introduction.
Harris then said that when the Republican-led Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade in June 2022, she was traveling to meet Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-IL) to work on the issue of “women unnecessarily dying in connection with childbirth,” an issue that disproportionately kills rural, Black, and Native American women. “And the decision came down, and I called my husband [Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff] immediately, because he’s about the only person I could call with the furor that I had in a most unrestrained way with language that stood honor to that fury,” Harris said, “[especially about the] hypocrisy of these people who pretend and put themselves out as caring about the sanctity of life, but have been wholly absent those numbers when it comes to the fact that women are dying every day in America in connection with childbirth.” Harris said that women don’t often share their difficult stories about childbirth because there is an “associated” social judgment that “is designed to make her feel bad or embarrassed or in some way subversive or an outcast” or “as though she did something wrong, and they will therefore silently suffer.”
She then called anti-abortion laws a “violation” of women’s bodily autonomy that sometimes occurs after an initial violation of rape or incest. She noted that doctors in states with abortion bans have withheld lifesaving medical care from pregnant patients for fear of violating Trump abortion bans. “Here’s the bottom line: government should not be telling people what to do about their own bodies,” Harris said calling the issue one of self-determination, freedom and liberty. “One does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree that the government should not be telling her what to do. Let her make that decision with her pastor or rabbi. Let her make that decision, if she chooses, with her loved ones.” “Individuals should have the right to make decisions about the matters of heart and home,” Harris continued. “So that’s about who you marry. It’s about what you choose to do within the privacy of your home that is not about hurting anyone else, the choices that you rightly should have… the freedom to make, and our homes are our bodies.”
On the Call Her Daddy podcast, Kamala Harris called out the GOP hypocrisy on “sanctity of life.”

We know that in the ending of Yandere Simulator 1980 mode Saisho kidnapped Jokichi after Ryoba had already kidnapped him and tells her in a letter to go find him and in the game in the present day it is implied that Ryoba works for Saikou Corp. and that Ichiro, son of Saisho and current CEO of Saikou Corp., tolerates the presence of Ayano, Ryoba's daughter, in Akademi even though Megami (Ichiro's daughter) and Kocho Shuyona (Akademi school principal) don't trust Ryoba and Ayano and they would be happy if she didn't attend Akademi to which many wonder why Saisho and later his son Ichiro would hire the woman who tarnished the reputation of the school he founded and I have a theory that I want to share.
Do any of you remember, have seen or heard of House of Cards, Berserk and Metal Gear Rising?
The story of House of Cards is about Frank Underwood, a politician who aspires to be president of the United States and ends up being elected at the cost of damaging the reputation of his rivals, but for this Frank could not act directly because that would tarnish his image, which is why Doug Stamper do the dirty work for him.
On the other hand in Berserk, Griffith aspires to be king by gaining the king's favor for the victories of the Band of the Hawk but he has many enemies and there are also contenders like Adonis who had the right to marry Charlotte, the daughter of the king, and Griffith could not allow this to happen so he orders Guts to get rid of Julius and Adonis and later organizes a plan to get rid of the nobles and the queen who want him dead without anyone suspecting him except Minister Foss whom he blackmails by using his daughter to help him with his plan.
And the last, Senator Steven Armstrong, the main antagonist of Metal Gear Rising, dreamed of making the United States a strong country with people who follow their own ideals with their own strength, so Armstrong respected those who managed to overcome adversity using their own strength and following their own ideals as Jetstream Sam and Raiden did that even Armstrong wanted to recruit them (only he managed to recruit Sam but not Raiden).
In the game there are several indications of this:
- In Kocho Shuyona's tapes where he mentions how he is upset with Ryoba for everything she has done and doesn't want her to return to Akademi and doesn't want to give her the graduation diploma but Saisho convinces him to let her go back to school and graduate.
- In another of the tapes Kocho mentions that while he was at the Saikou Corp. headquarters all the employees treated him normal but when he sees Ryoba at the headquarters and he asks why she is there every employees stopped talking to him and started ignoring him as if he wasn't there, implying that Ryoba works for Saiko Corp. but they don't want to elaborate on the subject.
- Another clue is that in one of the tapes from the basement of Ryoba's house, Jokichi asks her what will happen to their jobs if they go to America, to which she replies that she talked to her boss (who is currently Ichiro, current CEO of Saiko Corp.) and he gave him permission to leave (this could imply that Ichiro knows that Ryoba wants to go to America to finish off the journalist and Ichiro agrees that the journalist disappear for fear that he, because of of the Ryoba incident, uncover and expose the company's shady dealings that take place in the shadows and that Ryoba is running them).
- Another indication is, as I mentioned earlier, that Kocho and Megami don't want Ayano to study at Akademi and are openly hostile towards her because of her lineage but it is implied that they both tolerate her on Ichiro's orders: when Kocho knocks out Ayano with his taser and then he talks to Ichiro telling him that there is no deal, this implies that he only let Ayano enroll in Akademi on Ichiro's orders by having a deal with him and on the other hand when Megami talks to Ayano through a video call he explains that she can't stand her and that if it were up to her she wouldn't allow Ayano to attend Akademi but she can't do anything about it because her father tolerates Ayano for some reason unknown to Megami.
What I'm getting at is that Saisho maintained his company at the cost of shady things below, but if he did those jobs himself, his reputation, and by extension that of his company, would be tarnished by what he needed to have his own Doug Stamper or Guts for did his dirty work for him and what better person to do that kind of work than a serial killer who tarnished Akademi's reputation, killed girls and manipulated others without even hesitating and manipulated an entire country into thinking that was she innocent? It would simply be a win-win situation for Saisho and Ryoba: Saisho would have someone to run his company's shady deals and do the dirty work for him and he would even have the Aishi family at his family's disposal to do the dirty work for his descendants just as Ryoba does for him and Ryoba would make up for the damage she caused to Akademi's reputation, and by extension to Saikou Corp., and she would manage to be on good terms with Saisho and his family while working for them people would see her as a normal woman who like any other has a decent job as an office worker in a respectable company, which would make her the suspicions that will remain on her will be reduced to almost zero.
On the other hand, Saisho and Armstrong are extremist patriots who hate the current condition of their beloved countries (Japan for Saisho and the United States for Armstrong) but hide this rejection to use that condition that they detest so much to their advantage. Furthermore, Saisho respects Ryoba and wanted to recruit her for the same reasons that Armstrong respects Raiden and wanted to recruit him: they both see Ryoba and Raiden as the type of people they want in their ideal society in their respective countries (strong people, without weaknesses and who are governed by their own efforts and ideals and do not let morality stop them from achieving their goals).

Pop Art Painter Jamie Roxx (www.JamieRoxx.us) welcomes Ashley Puckett (Country) to the Show! ● WEB: ashleypuckett.com ● IG: @ashleypuckettmusic ● FB: @AshleyPPuckett
Ashley Puckett was born and raised in North Huntingdon, just east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ashley realized her passion for music at a young age, performing at vocal competitions and community events, and eventually, landing at open-mic nights and shows in bars and clubs, doing anything to keep the music and her passion alive. Her musical influences have been empowering..shaping the artist she has become: Ladies like Lee Ann Womack, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Jo Dee Messina, Carol King and LeAnn Rimes. At age sixteen Ashley picked up the guitar, began writing songs, and the adventurous country girl hit the road.
"I've never given up on where I wanted to be (in the music industry), however, when life pulls you in so many different directions, it sometimes takes you off-guard, and it becomes very easy to lose sight. I believe everything happens for a reason, and although I feel I'm always at the wrong place at the wrong time, somehow that led me to the right place at the right time, to say ‘It's now or never’ after meeting Bryan and Doug. The energy the three of us have, working together, and their dedication is so exciting...I know this is just the beginning of something spectacular."
Her single, “Bulletproof” was released on January 9th, 2020, Ashley’s birthday. The song raced to the top of the iTunes country singles chart in South Africa, also becoming a #1 radio hit on the New Music Weekly country chart. New single, “What’s Her Name” is being released on March 25th, 2022. ● Media Inquiries: MTS Management Group MTS Records www.mtsmanagementgroup.com

It's probably no surprise that in an era of mass media conglomerates, big chain expansion, and multimillion dollar newspaper buy-outs, the editors of daily newspapers have begun to behave more and more like the managers of any other corporate entity. And it's understandable, too, that after more than a decade of Ronald Reagan and George Bush's laissez-faire leadership and an anything-goes ethic in the boardroom, the executives of today's daily newspapers have decided to treat their readership as a market and the news as a product to appeal to that market.
