A year or two after the war ends, James and Lily make the joint decision to split up. To the general public, who only knew them as the perfect little family that somehow survived Voldemort's attack, it's a shock, but to their close friends it was an obvious decision. They had come right out of school and into a war, they hadn't had any time to explore themselves or the world before they were married and then parents and then locked up under threat of death. They'd been rushed so quickly through their lives that they felt they hadn't really had the chance to live them. So they decided to separate and remain friends and if they came back to each other, so be it, if they didn't, that was okay too.

It was strange at first, not being constantly around each other after spending so much time in hiding together, but they made it past the first couple of weeks they settled into it. Lily moves up north to stay with some of her friends and starts working at a little apothecary Dorcas owns. At first she tells herself that she is mostly focused on enjoying life as a single woman and providing Harry with ad many good opportunities as she can, but when she starts to get closer to Dorcas, she decides not to fight it. She'd wanted to live her life and make new memories so who was she to fight against the feelings she had for her old friend? They begin to go on dates, but take it slowly this time, savouring every little moment. They have no need to rush anymore. A few months in, Dorcas starts to buy her flowers once a week; she leaves them on the doorstep and Lily has to try to contain her blush every time she had Harry and he asks about them.

When they make it official, she panics a little. She doesn't want to make the same mistakes she did before, but they talk it through and Dorcas understands and they agree that they aren't rushing at all. They are happy and Lily gets to live out the rest of her life with the freedom and care she didn't get in her early adulthood.

James stays closer to the city. He finds it much more difficult to move away and start over so he chooses to distract himself and help the ministry clear up the aftermath of the war. He works to help track down potential death eaters so they can face trial and along the way ends up working closely to none other than Regulus Black- unknown war hero who was now secretly giving the names of all the death eaters he remembered in exchange for...nothing? James is intrigued and chooses to invite him out for drinks to get to know more. He finds Regulus truly fascinating and after that night, realises that he had finally forgotten about Lily and the war for more than an hour. He walks Regulus back to his house and they awkwardly agree to meet up again. When Lily next comes down to drop Harry off, he tells her, and she says she is happy for him. She tells him about Dorcas and he is shocked when he feels more happy for her than disappointed that she had moved on.

They continue to meet and keep dodging around each other for an embarrassingly long time until regulus caves and kisses him at one of their meet-ups. James freaks out and struggles to understand what he should do or how he should feel but ultimately decides that this is what he wants and they begin to see each other. They move considerably faster than Lily and Dorcas but that's okay, James likes it that way. He never did think he'd be able to experience that kind of sweet, awkward love again after the war had interrupted it the first time but he did. And now he had a beautiful husband, well-loved son, and a life full of hope, along with a life-long bond with Lily and Dorcas. And really, they couldn't be any happier.

i read this one dorlily fic like a year ago that i still think about now

i think it was called "it would've been fun if you would've been the one" or smth like that

and it was like past dorlily, with lily coming back to her hometown to reset her sense of self after her and james didn't work out (where dorcas is) after leaving there to pursue her acting career (and meeting james, getting married and having harry together)

and then it's lily making her peace with the fact that dorcas is happy with marlene now after not getting closure for either of them, and then lily meets

and i just think it's really beautiful

I realised how underdeveloped Dorcas is as a character and she's the loml so I came up with a few (a lot) headcanons for her

I personally headcanon her as being academic rivals with Lily and Quidditch rivals with Marlene but somehow best friends with Mary which started out because they were the only two black girls in their year and bonded over the racism and braiding each other's hair. Imo she'd have stuck to the skittles even after most of them took the Mark but then they did something she couldn't forgive (maybe to Mary's family or smth) and that's when she decided to join the Order instead of staying neutral like Pandora. She probably wanted to go into Wizarding Law or experimentation, maybe in Arithmancy or Runes. I think she was a half blood (her mother was a witch, her dad was a squib maybe) but raised in a Muggle community so her first interaction with magic outside her family was on the train with Pandora and Evan. I hc her as only child living in a joint family with three or four cousins, both younger and older but if she had a sibling, it would be a younger sister. I don't think she ever forgave Sirius even in any timeline where he and Reg reconciled because while she understood that he had valid reasons for leaving, she couldn't relate because she'd never do the same to her cousins or siblings. She masterminded every prank or plan the skittles had but no one ever thought she was involved because the teachers loved her. She would definitely be popular because she argued a lot with blood supremacist or racists or even just guys in general to defend people. She was the one who showed Reg, Barty and Evan how wrong their racist, homophobic blood supremacist families were. I think she'd be very open about her queerness and her heritage too. The only reason she never became Head Girl was because of Dumbledore's blatant favouritism of Gryffindors, even McGonagall wanted her to be the Head Girl.

She had blackmail on every single person at Hogwarts and used that to get into the Slytherin Quidditch team after they refused to let her try out because she was a girl. She and Emma Vanity became the first girls on the Slytherin Quidditch team since Eileen Prince. Thought she was ace until Emma who was her first proper crush and they became fwb but broke it off after Emmeline came into the picture. She dated both Reg and Evan while they were closeted and being pressured by their parents to date someone "suitable". She became good friends with Emmeline and Lily during a group project in either Runes or Arithmancy. This forced her and Marlene into such close proximity that they were forced to acknowledge their feelings for each other and eventually started dating after flirting with each other. If you ship Dorlily then the confession happened after one of them hit the other with a stronger spell than they were supposed to be using during DADA and they ended up being hurt. She definitely had to listen to Pandora/Mary pining about Lily before they got together. She and Remus became friends after she deduced that he was a werewolf in third year and started researching on Wolfsbane for him. Barty ran away to her house instead of Reg's or Evan's. She, Barty and Evan blew up a lot of shit because of their experimentation. She and Reg read a lot of Muggle literature which she introduced to him and frequently had debates about it. Muggle literature was one of the things that finally got through to Regulus and showed him how wrong blood supremacy was. Dorcas took Divination to understand Pandora better despite thinking that the subject was bullshit. She defended all of the skittles because people kept taunting them. She was the one who taught Barty, Evan and Pandora how to fight the "Muggle way". She was Mary's gay awakening but Mary never had an actual crush on her. She was definitely a hatstall between Slytherin and Ravenclaw.

wow, I love how detailed your version of Dorcas is....I feel like a lot of people struggle to characterize her, so this is really cool to read! I love the idea of her being friends with people from so many houses, too.

How I view her:

Lily my queen. She is arguably the most important character in the canon and one of my personal faves. She's definitely a no-nonsense girly who did not put up with anyone's shit at Hogwarts. Extremely witty, rivals Sirius in sarcastic wit, and also enjoys deadpan humour. Top of her class, but had to supplement that with a LOT of studying. Working class icon who had absolutely no time for her rich bitch classmates. Would always try to be nice and kind to everyone, but also was more than willing to call someone out on their bullshit. Very very prideful, especially when someone commented on her family, but was always willing to put it aside for the greater good (ie, never made comments when partnered with someone she disliked for projects). Very easily stressed and often needed to take a minute with a cup of tea to calm down with her girls. She was also the bravest of anyone, actually. I won't take notes on this one, she was the least cowardly ever. Can be deeply insecure in herself and her abilities and it doesn't often let up when she feels this way, even if she receives reassurance. I could go on about her forever so please fr ask for a follow up or more clarification if you want 🙏🙏

Jily: YES!!! This is in my top 3 ships of all time. Romantic or platonic, they're so iconic. Literally soulmates imo. Sweetheart x sweetheart, babygirl x babygirl, she pegs him <3

Lilypad: Platonically? Absolutely. Romantically? Absolutely. They would have insane sexual chemistry. Rivals to friends, rivals to lovers. They get each other. There's a reason why James loves them both. Also JILYPAD <333333

Regulily: I can definitely see this platonically in an au. In a normal setting, absolutely not. Lily would hate Regulus (and vice versa). But in an au, they'd be study buddies or just enjoy each others dry sarcasm. Can see them in a jegulily romantic setting, too.

Moonflower: UGH THEIR FRIENDSHIP <33 I personally can't see them dating, but them being besties is so important to me.

Bartylily: once again, yes in an au. Lily and her dirtbag boyfriend <3 Lily and her freak of a man that follows her around <3 they're so opposites attract <3 also I kinda adore flowerkiller... they're so iconic.

Snily: I appreciate them being background lore. Lily clung to their friendship so so deeply but knew she had to let him go when he started treating her awfully.

Marylily: HER BEST FRIEND. THEY'RE ARE THE SIRIUS AND JAMES OF THE VALKYRIES. They get each other so much and also unrequited romantic marylily goes HARD. Her and Mary being each others first kisses and having such a special bond <3

Lilylene: YES. Nerdy quiet girl and her loudmouth femme himbo gf. Marlene who acts as her guard dog and excitedly explains quidditch to her. She helps Marlene with subjects she struggles with.

Dorlily: ugh iconic. Their friendship is powerful and their relationship is also powerful. They're both so smart and so brave and Lily being able to be close with another Slytherin after what happened with Severus is so important to me.

Pandalily: Honestly, I cannot see them working out romantically. I can see them being friends and bonding over potions, but Lily does NOT have the patience to deal with Pandora.

I do things on my own timeline and how I want to do them, and I have learned to love this about myself in recent months but it was rough going there for awhile guys!

Whats a wip you want to finish but don't think you ever will? Mercy Be is dead until I have a Supernatural and Hungergames Renaissance at the same time.

What are your writing strengths? I think I really know how to make time flow. I know how to create a Vibe. An Energy. I know how to build a character.

What are your writing weaknesses? Continuity. If I didn't have to make this make sense it would be so much easier.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages? LOVE it! Unfortunately Im scared of looking stupid to people who speak those languages.

What's a fandom/Ship you haven't written for but want to? I would love to write some DC fics. It took me about a year in the marauders fandom to start writing for them, I assume it'll take me about the same for DC. Probably write a silly little camping one-shot...it'll become something maybe

What's your favourite fic you've ever written? My lowest ever kudo'd one actually. Ghosts Of Us, Mary centric, Marylene and Marylily. background prongsfoot, wolfstar and Jegulus (trust me it makes sense). I want to go back to her. Flesh her out even more. Make her 100k one day.

It's so difficult to pick but I managed to narrow it down :D I was planning to just share two specific hcs but I got carried away with each one and it just turned into word soup lmao

1: Dorlily

OH MY GOD I LOVE THEM 😭 I don't talk about them NEARLY as much as I should, I need to write a fic for them at some point. The rivals to lovers of it all, the constant competition and snarky flirting. I love them sooooo much! Especially if it ends badly and it's all angsty before they later get with other people but they're still just bitterly pining over eachother. Even when they're together they're trying to one-up each other and it should be toxic but it's their love language. They go from 0-100 so fast (take that however you will) and everybody around them is shocked to find out they're together. Definitely starts off casual and then accidentally grows into something more. If they're endgame I can see them fighting over large purchases and who drives and stuff, not because they hate each other but because they want to see how much they can get away with doing for their partner without addressing it. Kind of like aggressive princess treatment? I mainly like them in modern aus or crime aus.

2: Marylene

Also underrated but they're gaining popularity. Friends to lovers!! They definitely were each other's first crushes and convinced themselves they were over it but they weren't. They got together through their friends plotting and telling them the other liked them bc they couldn't admit to it themselves. A lot of accidental flirting. They work well in both canon and other aus but I love the idea of athletics aus for them (usually dance and hockey) as well as any form of historical bc they're just so chaotic it's amazing. They settle in really well together and none of their friends really notice when they take a new step in their relationship because after the initial panic and denial they end up moving really smoothly. Everyone is jealous of them for it.

3: Crystalflower (Lily and Sybill)

A little biased bc I made this one...but they complement each other so well! They're both smart but Lily is more obviously academically inclined and Syb is a little less obvious in her intelligence but it's there and Lily sees it. Then the angst of the war and the prophecy 😭 of her knowing it could be the woman she loves who is in danger but being in no place to stop it. Having to see Harry and see her girl looking back at her. The GUILT. Sybill teaches her tarot and in return Lily helps her with her extended writing skills. Nobody knows they're together, nobody really knows they hang out, but they like it that way. They can share each other without intervention or judgement.

Bonus: Bugmia (Walburga and Euphemia). Technically not marauders era but I have to mention them bc they're so overhated and I love them as bitter exes where they both thought they could fix each other and it never worked. Also quidditch rivals!!!

Dorcas always pretended to hate Lily and her ‘stupid griffyndor friends’ but she actually very much cared about Lily especially when they became friends due to Dorcas memorising everything about her

She always tried to distance her actual life from her academic rivalry and her feelings with Lily, but it always interfered with her life, her feelings of loathing and hatred were everywhere.

Smart sexy Lacy, I’m losing it lately

I feel like this lyrics is pretty explainable but alas I will explain. Because of her feelings for Lily, Dorcas always felt like she was going crazy because of how often Lily occupied her mind, and how Lily was always better than her.

I feel your compliments like bullets on skin

Lily rarely complimented Dorcas, but when she did Dorcas always felt like she was undeserving of the compliments, and that they were back handed in a way she didn’t realise.

Well aren’t you the greatest thing to ever exist?

Everybody always thought Lily was the best thing, or that’s what it seemed to everybody else. Dorcas tried hard not to think like that, using that remark sarcastically but she meant it most times.

Oooh I try I try I try, try to rationalise

Dorcas always tried to make her feelings for Lily go away, whether it was feelings of love or loathing, because Lily didn’t quite deserve either in her head. Dorcas tried to make herself minimise all thoughts of Lily in her head.

what are you favorite dorcas ships?

my favourite dorcas ship is pandorcas by far, i just think they have so so so much potential and i really like the dynamic that can be created around pandorcas. in devant, pandorcas is one of the main ships in it and i am having so much fun writing them

aside from that i’m not the biggest multishipper when it comes to dorcas, now that i think about it. i like dorlily, i think they are a really interesting pairing but aside from those two i’ve never really thought of anyone else with dorcas

and not a ship ship but i like the idea of barty and dorcas either dating or fake dating for a bit in dorcas’ fourth year and barty’s third year (in the case of them actually dating, they both realise their both gay and break up pretty quickly but continue to fake “date” until they’re ready to come out to people)
